  • This video lecture was originally set to be titled “Syncretism in Chinese Occultism,” but we’re going to modify it to “A Thought Tour of the Chinese Occult.” If you’re going to watch this video, then buckle in and settle down, because it’s a long one and I start you off in extremely ambitious territory-the deepest most obscure layer of Eastern esoteric thought.
In our tour of Chinese folk shamanism, we’ll look at two specific practices: the tang ki (spirit-possessed mediums) and dreamwork. Then we’ll review a few more intersecting points of Buddhist and Taoist syncretism, such as the emphasis on meditation and mudras; how Legalist thought has had an impact on the structure and codes of conduct set by orthodox Taoist lineages; and one compelling feature of how Confucianism plays in to the occult: the master-student relationship.
After visiting Confucius, the Buddha, and Lao Tzu, we’ll discuss Chinese folk religions, the very important craft consideration of regional land spirits, what traditional Chinese witchcraft looks like, which will include brief coverage of necromancy and soul dualism (the hun and the po), exorcism, and astral projection in ritual magic.
You are watching Video #5 in a six-part video lecture series.

Taoism is a nature-based religion, philosophy, and tradition of sorcery native to China, formed around 600 B.C. One hundred years later, Buddhism enters China and a modality of it--esoteric Buddhism--is blended in with Taoist magic. This introductory lecture series will cover the ontology, theory, history, and cultural practice of sorcery at the intersection of esoteric Buddhism and Taoism.

It strikes me that the veneration of bodhisattva is similar to how Catholics feel about Saints. We have a Greek term to help distinguish between veneration and worship. Dulia, or veneration, is reserved for Saints. Hyperdulia is focused on the Virgin Mary, basically veneration x 1000. Finally, Latria, the Greek word for adoration, is shown to God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit. It seems to be a difficult concept for protestants to understand, but there's a very distinct difference.

My father always bowed to certain people also, he would never shake hands with anyone so I learned that as a child so I never shake hands either. Yes I tune into the animal, plant kingdom when I do my gardening to find out through the devas what to plant in each raised bed in my garden and what stone to put in each bed, fertilizer etc. I definitely believe in the dream world and going to different realms to talk to ancestors, I do this almost on a regular basis at night. My dreams are so vivid I keep a journal of them since I've done since the 1970's
I say the vinegar is sweet. I drink it with water sometimes because I love the flavor.
My husband has a relationship with the wind, the wind plays with him, there will be no wind but if he says he's going to go burn the trash the wind will pick up. When he's outside and it's too windy he will talk to the wind and ask the wind to let up and it will. I've seen him work with the wind and it's amazing.
The natures spirits as I said I work with on a daily basis but especially during gardening season, but I also work with animal spirits talking to them, asking them to not eat up my garden and lets share instead. It's been working for many years for me.

I think the Chinese government, or the royal leaders of dynasties throughout the ages, mostly just employ the first part of the Confucius teaching - that the authority can do whatever to you and your job is to obey. I think even in schools and families, very few even know about the second part about the teacher’s responsibility.
Growing up in China, I always repelled against the Confucius tradition because how stupid it is to obey you blindly? I can’t have my own opinions? I can’t ask questions? Blah blah... and the older and therefore authority figures seems to prevent you from surpassing them rather than take it as their responsibility to make sure you do.
If not for your video, I wouldn’t even know the second part of the Confucius teaching.

WOW! What a video!!! OK, Benebell - I'm subscribing to your channel! When it comes to Taoism and Chinese magic, divination and metaphysics, it seems like there are a lot of scheisters and charlatans hanging out on the internet - but you are knowledgable, personable and articulate in communicating your knowledge. Bravo! I grew up in the Far East, and now that I have watched your video, I can begin to place some of the occult stuff that I saw when I was growing up. The fire dancers I saw in the park by the Tamshui River in Taipei, Taiwan? Oh yeah, they were the folk shamans, the servants of the diviners that you told us about. But still, even growing up in Taiwan and Japan, and absorbing a lot of the spirit by osmosis, it seems, I realize that Chinese occultism is a very vast and strange world, and that I have only begun to skim the surface. I remember that I was walking the streets of San Gabriel, California last year, I stumbled upon what seemed to be a Chinese magician / exorcist's shop, where there were statues of hundreds of different deities or Bodhisattvas lining the walls, all vigilant. The magician proprietor was very gracious in that he didn't shoo me away, but let me hang out silently in his store for a while, in total awe of everything. By the way - could you recommend a good introductory book that covers the fascinating field of Chinese occultism? And a final question: Are you related to King Wen of I Ching fame? And what is your personal spiritual orientation in relation to all you have presented in this video?

You state that Taoism has borrowed from esoteric Buddhism scriptures or spells , or Mudras/hand formations I would not totally agree with your inference. However I look forward to your next video about the pantheon about Deities in Taoism. Benebell when you comment on the "Mandate of Heaven" and the Chinese Imperial Bureaucracy, it makes perfect sense. And this is true with the Chinese nobles who were ennobled by the Chinese Emperors (Son of Heaven) to be also privy and educated into the Ceremonial magicks of the Chinese Buddhist Taoist Mystery Schools as the Chinese Emperors were believed to be in the threshold between spirit and the mortal mundane. Therefore, the Chinese Nobles (Dukes, Marquis, Counts, Earls, Viscounts, and Barons) are thoroughly trained into tapping the secrets of Heaven and Earth and were authorized by their ennoblement and grandeur thereof. I concur.

I think we are connected without words. The way we embody ourselves, perform physical actions, our stances, postures and gaits, the actions we choose to perform, all have an extraordinary bandwidth and power, and fit within a framework of the communal sublime. The architecture around you affects the social game you play. Next to a cathedral, people might be primed with fear of the Lord and this might affect how they play the pavement-usage game. In the town centre, there is a particular style of dasein (Heidegger concept) by why other persons are stood in front of; there is a know-how to relating to persons, shops, benches, parts of pavement, beauty in building, ugliness in advertisement, etc. In the library, depending on the architecture, one might relate to others as atomized individuals to be respected through the norm of quiet, or members of a sublime communal structure busily buzzing about our business in a puritan luminous yearning towards Heaven, in a kind of collective apotheosis.
Essentially, it boils down to Dasein: the mode of being (which can be expressed in different styles of being) that humans/communities take that relates to other things as equipment, with readiness-to-hand or un-readiness-to-hand, or as substances, which we stand upon and just are, with their properties.

33:48 As you said about teachers not wanting to teach to outsiders or non-Chinese etc… I’ve experienced it, and know many stories, from Chinese martial arts. At times the teacher is not even Chinese but he’s simply not going to tell you. They’ll openly say they will but are just egging you on. I once had a shaolin monk (Chinese all the way) wouldn’t even tell me what the color of the belt he just gave me meant. Later he’s telling a beautiful woman what all the colors mean.
Another dynamic is that the master doesn’t know (maybe then he’s not truly a master??) but he’s just parroting what his master said. He’s never reached that height, or mislabeled it with a lower state, eventually leading to a broken lineage.
Or, as in the Vipassana tradition of U Ba Khin taught by SN Goenka, it is actually documented Goenka yelling at a senior meditator (AT) because he was attempting to go all the way to reach enlightenment. Goenka yelled ‘we are not here to reach enlightenment, we are here to serve.’

14:41 This reminds me of: "When faced with an impossible choice between two ways, the best course to take is always the third." super curious if there are any traditions which focus that part? I have seen many which are one vs the other as you described instead of both.

Wow 5 years ago that you made this video. That's when I started to really understand enlightenment and landing on your video is so on point. My nationality is Hmong the real ancient people of china. Lao zi is Hmong. Chi you is Hmong Huang di is Hmong and yan di is Hmong. Hmong people are the first to do shamanic rituals and many others rice, swords, gun power etc etc. All your words makes sense, no it makes money. 😊 History is rewritten more times then you can image. The Bible, history, calendar, etc etc. So if you really think about it, nothing is really accurate it's what you believe makes it come true.

Judeo-Christianity believes only humans and spiritual creatures and God are spirit. Animals and plants and inanimate creation do not have a spirit. They are connected with God though, and do have souls, but not rational souls. God gives them generative life in their souls.
So Chinese occult thinking is pantheistic and polytheistic? The difference is only how they are prescribed. Judeo-Christianity considers all gods and goddesses to be demons. And the connection with nature and the world is panentheistic I think. Very subtle. Just an extra 'en'.

At the essence of all religious teachings is the Tao that is felt intuitively in the give and play of Cosmic Resonance.
To Follow the Tao is to dance like Shiva. Yielding to the Tao. Which is gravity moving through resonance and Consciousness moving through life.

As someone that has had many ghost/spirit encounters, along with having a soul entity attach to me for 10 years, then having it removed with the help of hypnotherapy (to discover what the issue was initially). I can ensure you that exorcisms are very real and a big problem. A lot are plasma parasites that are attracted to empaths. I truly hope you get to encounter some of these entities, beings and lost souls for your own personal growth in your practice.

In brazil we have traditions where the gods dont speak just channel energy when incorporated in a medium. But there are other traditions where that happens but with ancestors that do speak coherently in portuguese. Its not "tongues". Some other traditions altough speak portuguese also use these certain "proofs" of endurance to show its the entity not the person. Very interesting.thank you do much

Jesus is the greatest Bhuddha of all time. So anyone can try praying to Jesus and see how things happen. Also try using scriptures from the Holy Bible as mantras. For ex. If I want healing I simply search for all verses that says I am healed or will be healed and keep chanting it several times a day.

Stop illuding yourself about the bowing part. People do this because leadershits dureout time expected us to bow.
Today people say it is a sign of respect but it is actually from fear.
For if you did not bow you where seen as 'one that does not show "respect" '
They always got killed left and right.
Shit the people on that side of the ocean calls it a sign of respect because dureout ages of time if they did not they would be forced to act sepuku.
But ok. Lie yourself about respect

Woah, that's really cool, I didn't know that there was a Chinese practice that used speaking in tongues. My parents followed the rural Christian practices that did that (I mean technically I know how to do it, too, but I don't feel comfortable channeling the Christian Holy Spirit now that I don't follow that path anymore), and I agree that it's really interesting how it parallels in giving the common people a direct line to divinity, given that Christians aren't usually allowed to use any form of divination or channeling. What often happens, though, is that if a church group gets too adept at the practice, they will eventually cross a line where a bunch of the church members will be like "Wait a second! That's not in the Bible! This is heresy!" and it'll all fall apart and everyone will have to go find a new church. Some real, magical stuff can happen before it gets to that point, though, like healing miracles and exorcisms. I personally don't believe in Christian doctrine at all these days, although it can be a legitimate pathway to divinity, because that same dogmatism that often holds them back from getting too far also has a lot of other negative things about it that I don't agree with (like being against other gods and religions, or its other hyper-conservative social stances).
