    Yes, admittedly it works.But, the glow plugs are only rated for 7 volts and you are connecting them to a 12 volt battery and solar panel. I believe that's why the first one ballooned and nearly exploded. So, you should wire them in series, instead of parallel. That way, the 12 volts would be divided between them, providing 6 volts to each glow plug. 2 glow plugs in series doubles the resistance and halves the current. Therefore, you battery would not discharge as fast.
    Also, as others mentioned, there should be a charge controller in between the solar panel and battery to avoid overcharging. Others have also pointed out that passive solar heating with black pipes would allow your solar energy to be used for important stuff, like watching YT videos.😎

    You did an awesome job presenting your hot water heater with solar panel supplied to the battery to keep your system working continuously. You gave me an idea on how to apply what you designed to what the man who created the "One Hour Shower" designed that would make it possible to create a hot shower system. Thank you for sharing your skill with us.

      How long will it takes to heat water

  • @cphank151
    @cphank151 4 года назад +10

    Although this heated the water, most of the energy for heating it came from the battery. Two PT-107 glow plugs dissipate about 600W when cold. They may be considered cold when immersed in water under 100C. Without the solar panel, the battery would discharge in about 9 minutes. My guess is the solar panel is 100W at best, but is more likely to be about 50W. Generously assuming the panel is capable of 100W battery life would be extended to slightly over 10 minutes. If the barrel is about 40 liters, the water temperature would barely rise two degrees before the battery is discharged and a meager 100W from the solar panel would result in perhaps 1.5C per hour temperature rise thereafter at best, assuming no heat is lost to radiation and conduction from the surface of the barrel.
    A better water heater would be to simply paint the barrel flat black and stand it in direct sunlight, but this still results in a lot of loss due to radiation and conduction. Some additional efficiency can be gained by creating a greenhouse around the black barrel, perhaps with transparent plastic wrap stretched over a thin, light framework around the barrel. The plastic should be sealed as well as practical to keep the air between the barrel and plastic wrap trapped inside with as little convection current in the trapped air as possible. This should result in at least 300W-400W heat gain by the barrel as long as it is in direct sunlight. A better use of the the solar panel would be to power a mixer motor to keep the water in the barrel well mixed and will keep the barrel surface as cool as possible, allowing it to absorb more heat from the solar radiation. Also friction created by stirring the water increases it temperature as well.

      I didn't verify your math but I'm inclined to agree with your points. Your analysis seems logical. You sound like an engineer, as am I so I think I'll set aside some time to run the numbers myself. Let me just add though that the most efficient use of the sun's energy for heating is probably by some direct means for example a Fresnel lens or something of that nature. Good argument though!

    I've never commented on somebody's work negatively, but I'm going to start now. Electricity is what I like to call high grade energy. And should be treated as such. Heat especially at low temperatures is low grade energy. Using solar electric to heat water is such a waste of technology. Use a black tank, or run the water through some black pipes and you get better heating without all that technology. Solar cells get hot when generating electricity. Run water through copper tubes attached behind the solar panels to cool it down.

    I hooked up to a 12 V 200 amp gel battery. I followed thermometer for 2 hours.
    Results ; Not as it appears. 12V 200 amp battery has finished. Air temperature was 15 degree Turkey in İzmir.
    Top water temperature of 3-liters container 58 C
    Bottom water temperature of 3-liters container 21 C

      Depends where you live, if you did that here in Andalusia you'd run the risk of overheating/scalding. Your advice is sound for somewhere like Canada or Alaska, say. Or the north of UK. Here I would just use a black barrel in summer and switch to a black barrel with Glo-plugs and parabolic reflector in winter.

  • @TRS-Tech
    @TRS-Tech 4 года назад +2

    As stated by other posters the solar panel with that output would be as much use as a screen door in a submarine ! I would not be surprised if more energy was derived from solar radiation warming the water. Even with the right size solar array a charge controller would be needed as well as a low voltage cut off to protect the SLA battery (that should not be in direct sunlight itself) from deep discharge to say nothing of the only fuse being the connecting wiring.
    The cable being used was likely undersized for the current draw and I am not sure if the tip of the glow plug is electrically isolated. If not the plugs would eat themselves away from electrolysis quite aside from making the water taste like my wifes soup !
    What makes this project very dangerous though is how the container was prepared. With the lid and seal employed this barel is now a pressure vessel and I would not be surprised if the gain in temperature had a lot to do with the barrel being pressurised.Thank goodness those two glow plug heaters would never be able to bring the water to boiling point. If they were you have a container that could fail at any moment spraying anyone nearby with scolding hot water.
    Even if this was not a poor use of items not suitable for the job and employed incorrectly that "water" heater would only bring the builder of it to boiling point when he gets handed down the order to pay compensation to whoever it eventually injured. Pressurised how water heaters are safe if used with a safety overpressure valve. This did not have one.
    I doubt this heater would have lasted more than a few days if that but if anyone was thinking of using this design please save yourself a trip to hospital and do the job properly. Have a browse on RUclips for the correct way to employ these types of heating vessels and do NOT copy this idea !!!!!!

      A manual push-button piezoelectric igniter, a spritz of starting fluid and a little lighter fluid on some old newspaper or junk mail kindling might be more energy & cost efficient for that purpose, wouldn't it? Also, if you get an apple press and pay people a penny per person for all their junk mail, newspaper, Styrofoam and other things the city might charge them to dispose of, use a little E85 ethanol fuel (instead of hot water) to help process the Styrofoam into the paper while pressing it into a solid pancake like mass that can be diced up into pellets (or pressed into ice cube trays somehow), couldn't you make your own pellets rather easily, and save more money too? Just food for thought.

    Use a simple solar heater like exist in commerce ,or make yourself .Next,introduce this heater at 12 volts to make fast process of heating and ,in the case when not exist sun . Use cilinders from black PVC somewhere to 3 cm diametru to heat fast and reduce time . It's a good idea for winter time . What else we can use in winter ?.A rocket stove .

    Glow Plugs needs up to 60A , don't think your battery will last. Maybe it is the sun heating the container.....

    Hard to think this will work as-is, because there's no switch and no thermostat. But you could take the idea and tweak it. In this setup you'd quickly drain the battery, destroy its life, and scrap the whole thing. Even so, it's neat to think about how easily you can wire up a 12V heating element.
