Thank you for continuing to hold Balenciaga accountable for their inexcusable and abhorrent messaging regarding the mistreatment of children. Shame on all the celebrities continuing to support them!!
So happy you mentioned that Balenciaga should still be on a "time out". Can NOT believe that so many celebrities gave them a pass for the evil and disgusting ads. Shame on them! Never forget.
Oh, boy. Me too. What happened to beautiful😂 garments, luscious fabrics accessorised to perfection? Nowadays we seem to get plenty of weirdos flashing their bits. Seem to forget that everyone has those bits, as appropriate, be they hen or rooster!! The one that really got me was the brown crinoline!
Emily and Jlo love the naked dress attention from men. As does Kendal. I read that hers is naked in the back, though I havnt seen it. Jlo has been doing it for years. She did it on a couple different New Year’s Eve events, and things like this event. You are right, it’s getting to be old hat. But some people aren’t doing it for the current fashion, but for the attention it gets from a certain crowd. A lot of celebrities have all the attention they could stand and go for a truly unique and stylish look. But certain people can never get enough of the naked attention lol. the thing is, naked is everywhere these days, so at an event like this it’s not at all unique or creative, let alone the theme.
Yes! She actually is becoming prettier as she has matured past her “rocker’s chick” days. Less make- up, no gaudy clothes. She’s letting her considerable natural beauty shine through!! There was even a great recent People article about her deciding to age gracefully. She has succeeded!
Man that pregnant lady missed a golden opportunity with this theme. She could have leaned hard into a whole earth mother aesthetic, but instead she wore a deflating balloon...
Chloé Sevigny is about the only one who DID get the memo. It wasn't just 'a garden' theme - did you look into the exhibit at all? It's about how clothing ages over time, how it breaks down, how dresses used to even be kept and changed into newer models.
@@sharonalbanese8084 I love that she is not going for what is the prettiest outfit (which I think this channel favors, not a critique because that analysis has its place too) but what does this outfit represent or how does it push the limits, which is what Met should be - a serious fashion event, not an everyone looks nice outing.
I wish more celebrities would watch your videos and wake up. You have such a good eye for fashion. Especially the different body types and what is flattering and what is not.
I can't take this event seriously. A bunch of unknowns and C list celebrities prancing about in ludicrous God knows what so called costumes. I wish Anna Wintour would retire and take her boring bob and met gala with her.
I'd hoped for some timeless elegance but it's more trash done time and time again. The cost of all of these really leave me cold too. I guess I'm "too old" to understand the point of these people playing dress up for a night out. Stay happy 💛
I usually agree with most of your opinions, however Elle Fanning's dress and overall look took my breath away. She looked like a perfect garden sculpture... Wet from the morning dew. I loved it
A lot of the dresses are themed on older dresses so they are 're-using' a past idea which does relate to the secondary theme (reconstructing older dresses) and time as well..
I agree! Beebs, you look better than any of the women at the Met. If I spent that much to get into an event and could be dressed by stylists, I would want to look and feel pretty. Even Zendaya, who usually looks fantastic, had that gigantic headpiece that was overwhelming and not flattering at all. 😕
Technically the theme was Garden of Time, the JG Ballard short story. Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion is the name of the Costume Institute's exhibition that accompanies the gala as part of the fundraiser. BUT! Even the red carpet interviewers seemed confused about exactly what the theme was and nobody seemed to gaf about it being based on a Ballard story?
Maybe some of the Met revellers were more in tune with the whole idea than we give them credit for. To start, you need to awaken some "sleeping beauties" in your wardrobe. So you call in somebody from your housekeeping staff who knows how to work a needle and thread, and get the holes mended in some of the skivvies you were going to donate to the thrift store. Next, maybe you trouble yourself to have an assistant read you the Ballard story. After the first line, "Towards evening, when the great shadow of the Palladian villa filled the terrace, ...", STOP! You call your couturier to request a dress that looks like a shadow big enough to fill a villa terrace.
The Met Gala is something from another galaxy to us in the real world and I've only become aware of it as an annual event in the last 4 years or so, mainly because Meghan Markle is consistently snubbed from being invited. One thing I learned from your video is that Swarovski are now doing clothes fashion. Didn't know that. IMO very few dresses were attractive, maybe 10%. I take my hat of to you for knowing who all these people are because I wouldn't recognise most of them.
Yay! Another Met Gala video! I agree the naked dress is really boring. JLO will ALWAYS wear naked dress as she gets older but there comes a point it looks desperate! Kerry Washington I missed seeing on the red carpet but I LOVE that dress! Maybe because purple is my favorite color. Gigi Hadid was gorgeous. Kim Kardashian and the sisters were just a mess trying to go for the wasp waist - getting old. Any too short dress was a fail too as it shows too much of “the goods”. IMO, this was the biggest fail considering the theme. Best: Gigi Hadid and Kerry Washington Worst: Naked lady with the slime covering her see through white dress. She had to use her hands to cover the boobs and crotch area! 😳
I am so not a fashonista, jeans are my dress up costume. Yet I devour ALL the videos, articles and have even had subscriptions to all the mags. I love seeing and hearing all the differing points of view on events such as the Met Gala. I couldnt tell you exactly who most of the people are. Why do I care about the fashion world? To me it is art. I may not understand the vision of the artist, but dang , they do be creative!! Thanks for a great video.
At this point I think anna wintour should retire and pass the baton. Also any designer willingly not following theme should not be invited the next year. Then maybe it won't always be so confused.
Same. It was mostly “garden = flowers” (and I hear Meryl as Miranda Priestly saying “groundbreaking” in my head 😂). Or people just wore a dress like they were going to an awards show.
Hooray, the video I’ve been looking forward to watching since the Met Gala! I miss your collaborations with Jen. Please do Meghan’s Nigerian “tour” with her. I love to see your insight on what she could’ve worn for her shape and the event. Thank you so much! Love your videos so much! 😘🩷✨
Ridiculous, costume party. When you think of all the money spent on these ridiculous "dresses", I shake my head in disgust. Even the whole point of this, for "art" charity seems such a waste when there are so many charities out there that can benefit and reach so many people struggling just to survive. Shameful.😢
I agree, but everyone watches it and gets excited about it and blogs about it, so it won’t go away. I am one of the worst offenders of this. I couldn’t click on this video fast enough.
After WWII the women in France threw (mud?) or something at haute couture models as a statement because they couldn't afford milk while people wasting money on overpriced clothing.
I mean, if you don't personally want to give to museums, symphonies, and ballet, then don't. But demanding people only give to food banks instead is ridiculous. And why stop there? $20 to your food bank might feed a family for a few days but could feed a family in the Sudan for half a year, so maybe we should only give to those charities instead? Let folks give where they want to give...except politicians it's just weird to give money to them 😂
The flowers in The Garden of Time short story are made of crystal so that's probably why there were so many iridescent or glass like (but not naked) dresses. I feel like this was a split between a small number of people who followed the actual dress code, some who used the exhibit for inspiration, and LOTS of people who saw garden or gala and thought "good enough". My top for the actual theme was Elle Fanning but when it comes to Sleeping Beauties, Sarah Jessica Parker takes it. Overall though, it was Alia Bhatt for me.
Just so you know: I think you needed to know more about the book to say that some of the dresses were not in theme, when they were perfectly in theme. Elle Fanning dress was amazing!
I wish you spent more time on Elle's dress - did not even discuss the crystal birds which are so original and beautiful. And some of the other dresses which were clearly working with the idea of decaying fabric which had been worn and torn, are definitely on theme
I LOVE Chloe Sevigny (10:13 ) in general and get a kick out of how she’s always doing some weirdo fashion choices. I can kind of see how she was going for a deconstructed/falling apart/ sleeping beauty style look. I certainly wouldn’t wear it lol but she stays true to her own style 🤷🏼♀️ Also I loved the butterfly dress a little later on. And it’s spot on for the theme: garden and time (hello metamorphosis?!)
J Lo is a very beautiful woman who is in great shape and has a flawless complexion. She would be perfect in beautiful, feminine, classically styled gowns in various colors, especially pastels. She doesn’t need flash and glitz to be breathtaking. She needs to give up the see-through look! She can bring out the glitzy, sexy look during her concert performances.
The "theme" was evidently too difficult for a lot of these people to understand - or they decided it was a bit silly and they'd just wear what they always wear, like Jennifer Lopez, wearing nothing much, accessorised with her ubiquitous scowling expression. And what's that weird thing now - of the wind shields some people wear in front of their faces ??
The met gala is a fundraiser for the costume institute. The point is the opulence and over the top. The clothing and jewelry is all borrowed or gifted, yes it’s extraordinarily expensive but even in tough time historically there has been excess even when it seems like too much. I hate that there was no actually creativity either the theme, it was too on point … everyone in flowers blah. The creative arts and craftsmanship of these pieces is still valuable and important to recognize. Also garden of time is a social commentary …
Have been eagerly waiting for this video with your insightful comments. Agree with your choice of best dress. There were some lovely numbers but overall designers have run out of imagination, though impressed the men had better outfits than the women. Not a fan of black unless really a work of art. How do they walk around meeting and greeting with those long trains? Like what do they do when the hors d'oeuvres come out?
I think the “butterfly” dress would work with a slip (so we don’t see everything) and add more color to it because many butterflies are known for their beautiful, colorful wings, and the colors would better play with the garden and spring theme than just the black pattern.
I loved Zendaya’s first outfit, favorite I remember seeing - which you didn’t show here. I thought the skirt of Kim K’s outfit was an amazing piece of craftsmanship, which is not something I ever thought I would say. Gabrielle Union was my other standout. Cardi B looked like Ursula from little mermaid.
Really surprised that you didn’t show Alia Bhatt’s look. She was the best dressed according to a lot of videos and thought so as well. She was also the most googled look of this year.
Sorry, I was just taking a katnap. Yikes! So much clutter on show. You should have woken me at 29:21 as I agree with Beebs it's the best. Pretty in pink wins it!
I believe that the black dresses represented the evil witch/Queen that would ask the mirror, "Mirror Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?"
All I could say was "who"? My favorite comment was about baked potatoes. With all the toppings that I would feel too guilty to eat. Off topic again, sorry.
Beebs, you are the BEST fashion commentator in the game! You are so insightful and descriptive and are never shaming of the women themselves. You detail what you like and dislike and I usually agree with you 100%. You have perfect ideas for improving the gowns you dislike. Hopefully designers are listening to your suggestions.
I'm curious about this Beebs (it's a multi-part question); For these themed events, how important is the theme? Like are people perceived as rude if they don't participate in the theme? Is it like a halloween party where you bope people will dress up but expect a few of the attendees not to or is it like black tie where there's a definite wrong way of doing it? Other part of the question - are there different expectations at the different events i.e. are there some themed galas where the expectation is higher for attendees to participate? For some reason I enjoy fashion videos but I have no knowledge of fashion culture. I'm a straight guy who mostly just wears simple, comfortable clothes but always find myself interested in extravagant and flamboyant clothes. Not only am I the only guy I know who loves watching figure skating but I absolutely love the outfits! As a young man I was quite daring in my fashion but now I just try to look neat.
I think some of these styles were going for the wicked witch that put sleeping beauty to sleep. Had they carried a basket of apples it would have been more apparent.
How did these people get it so wrong? Garden, floral, sleeping beauty, time, crystal, fabric decay. Pick one, its not that hard! Black dresses were just stupid for the theme. Not to mention busy black dresses don't photograph well. You can't see any detail. How do you have a custom dress look so bad or boring. There's how many crazy runway dresses that could fit the theme, and this is what we got? Just lame.
The Garden of Time is a short story by JG Ballard. So there was specific inspiration to work from. It was just a matter of attendees making the effort to read it. Which was obviously asking too much lol
I've been waiting for this one from you bcz I sooo many issues with so many of these dresses..as did you. I always look forward to your desciptions bcz of your sense of humor. But I kept saying to myself " whats happening"..and why?😂
It's no longer a "gala", it's a FREAK show.😮

Yeah, those ads are reprehensible, but celebrities don’t care. They face zero consequences.
It’s a costume party and many spent a whole lot of money on ugly.
The naked dress -- "They've done it before, we've seen it all before." Ha!Ha! I see what you did there!
Im still stunned how Everyone missed the opportunity to go full throttle pre-raphaelite drowned ophelia in the garden look
That would be 'classy' and require a modicum of intelligence. And we can't have that ...
I must be too old, I really didn't love any of them, and disliked most of them. Haha. I prefer the dresses from years past =). Thanks for the video.
Same!
Kinda ironic cuz the main point of the theme is to reference clothing too old to wear. Wishing there was some Edwardian and older themed dresses
You’re not old! I don’t like any of them😩 How how do any of them resemble a garden 🤦♀️ Goodness gracious 😩😩😩

Trashy stuff
Balenciaga should not recover from its intentionally explicit campaign. I disrespect the actors who've sold out and continue to promote the company.

I don't understand how they think that is attractive. They look like high-priced, trashy call girls.
Pamela Anderson looked beautiful in that Oscar de la Renta dress. And she looked classy! Who’d a thought?

I am over the naked dresses, maybe cobwebs over sleeping beauty? But still over it. Kim K looked a bit drugged or unwell, her outfit also off.

I will say it for you, Serena Williams' dress was hideous. No sugar coating is necessary, lol.
Absolutely agree with you about Karlie Kloss's Swarovski dress - divine! I also really enjoyed the concept of Dan Levy's suit.
What a mess this was this year. I would not call it a success at all. It was mostly just exhibitionism with no attempt to be part of any theme.

I believe that the black dresses represented the evil witch/Queen that would ask the mirror, "Mirror Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?"
Serena’s look:
When you’re stranded on Everest battling hypothermia at 7 but you have to attend the Met Gala at 8 😂💀
All I could say was "who"? My favorite comment was about baked potatoes. With all the toppings that I would feel too guilty to eat. Off topic again, sorry.
Beebs, you are the BEST fashion commentator in the game! You are so insightful and descriptive and are never shaming of the women themselves. You detail what you like and dislike and I usually agree with you 100%. You have perfect ideas for improving the gowns you dislike. Hopefully designers are listening to your suggestions.
Love Zendaya but she looked like she belonged in Cruella
A Quannah Chasinghorse reminds me of 1830s style ballgowns
Anok Yai was my favorite. What a stunning, perfect beauty.💜💙
Been waiting for your take on this!
I have a very simple question. How do they sit down and eat their dinner in these dresses??? 🤣
They probably Don't eat, so they just stand!.......How do they go to the Bathroom, or do they wear diapers? 🚽🧻
Just lame.
"Garden of Time" is so vague as to be essentially meaningless IMO. I'm not surprised the outfits were all over the place thematically.
Why bother with a theme? They just do the same thing year after year!🤷♂️
I agree. That theme makes zero sense.
The Garden of Time is a short story by JG Ballard. So there was specific inspiration to work from. It was just a matter of attendees making the effort to read it. Which was obviously asking too much lol
It's based on a short story so it's not vague or meaningless. Most of these people just didn't bother reading it.
I've been waiting for this one from you bcz I sooo many issues with so many of these dresses..as did you. I always look forward to your desciptions bcz of your sense of humor. But I kept saying to myself " whats happening"..and why?😂
It's a night of who can outdo the one dressed like a freak! Rare outfit at the MET that defines class!
Perfect summary of the Met Gala not so great fashion show. Did love the beautiful purple dress so much.
