    That's just terrible that we have to modify them right out of the package. The last EMGO points that I found 3 years ago had crud on the contacts and needed cleaning before it would fire at all. A sad state but I'm glad you posted here. I wonder if there are enough returns that China might actually fix these.

    Take your old points appart. Using a honing stone clean the contacts. I have some points that are 50 years old. I've also used electronic ignition from a Suzuki GS. Take the cam of the advancer and put the trigger from the Suzuki on there. Then mount the timing plate with pickups from the Suzuki in place of the breaker plate. Use the CDI box from the Suzuki. Easy to wire and works great.

    I have been doing this for 25 years! The factory ones were not always set up proper either.
    So i found using dimond wheel used for sharpening carbide machining tools on a bench grinder and it will make the points clean and gets rid of pitting. But I only do this when I can not find points for all the od ball 70's bikes my customers bring me.

    Thanks for the advice to open the screw holes a bit. that was the reason for my challenge to find the exact spot on R-side. Just open a tiny bit and it came spot on. :)

    Very helpful as I'm coming up on needing a new set. Also pretty interested in hearing more about the electronic ignition system.

    Don’t drag your file it will rip the teeth off it. If you treat a file with respect and use it correctly it will last a very long time. If you keep pressure on the teeth while you pull backwards on it, it will be worn out in five minutes! You make me feel like a high school shop teacher watching kids burn through five dollar files! Easy on that thing!

    Is 17:17 a normal amount of spark across the points or is it an indication of faulty/missing condensers/capacitors?

      Hey Bue, Here's a link to a short video clip of what a faulty condenser would look like: ruclips.net/video/hzUL-mPP23Y/видео.html

    YEARS AGO, ON CB 350 F1, 500, 550, 750, WE DRILLED & TAPPED THE BREAKER PLATE TO USE GM EXTERNALLY ADJUSTABLE POINTS. THIS MIGHT WORK ON 2 CYLINDER BIKES, GOOD LUCK.

    • @Common-motor
      @Common-motor  6 лет назад

      Yes I have seen that mod on the 4 cylinders. There is not enough room in the points chamber for the GM points on the twins. Also fours are crankshaft driven and have placement at 180 deg apart. On the twins, it is cam driven which places the points at 90 deg apart.

    I went to Iron Pony they charged me over $100.00 Dollars for 2 sets of points with no condenser?
    Now I see them with a condenser for about $37.00?
    For my KZ 550 sport.

    What happened is the points aren't made by the same company. Theyre sold by the same company. . Don't think Amereican mass production factories . Think cottage industries. Theyre made by different people in batches , maybe even in their houses . for 3 bucks a day. then all the batches are mixed together. Real different people not working together. sourcing parts such as washers from different suppliers. So one person decided the big washers are ok, one decided no washers are ok . then they are all picked up and mixed together and sold. get what i mean.

    In 1979, I had a 1972 Honda CB 350. Finding parts for it was all but impossible. So, How in the hell does one find parts now? That was over 40 years ago. WTF?

      Hey, what can I say? I like me some grease! No honestly don't use so much it gets on the points contact surface. We always wipe any excess off once things are installed.
