All the greats of the past bring something to this aria as does Sass. It's a pity for us, the listening public, that this voice is not available to us now. She had a great beauty of voice and person to show us.

I agree. People need to stop making these ridiculous comparisons. I personally don't want to hear a bunch of singers who all sound the same....good or not. This girl added a beautiful light approach to the aria. She didn't make it sound strained or overpowering. I quite like it.

First and foremost, thanks for the post. I found this an interesting portrayal. Sass always gives a very personal protrayal and whether you like her or not, at least she always gives it her absolute all. It's crazy in some ways to compare such different singers as Callas, Sass and Sutherland - they all had their special strengths and appeal. For me, though no one sang the cabaletta like Callas - such confidence and command of the role. Love Sass too though - thanks again.
You must be joking right? She was the ultimate "famous" soprano. Her career lasted 5-7 years by the end of which she had no voice left. She breaths high and can barely finish singing without cutting the phrase to breath. She sounds increasingly shrill at the top and copies Callas more than anybody else. You can put Sass with Souliotis, Studer and Sweet as ultimate flash in the pan sopranos. At least Netrebko, Gheorghiu and Fleming have all been singing for well over 20 years each.
+Alex Daniel I hear pure head voice and no throat. I hear a fully controlled voice. I hear nicely produced high notes very concentrated and penetrative. She has a beautiful and dramatic SOUND. Souliotis' career lasted the same...she immitates Callas in some parts.....but firstly not all singers can even imitate Callas! and secondly here u just hear 1 aria.... how safe can be ur jugdements hearing 1-2 songs of her.

Sass was "burdened" by comparisons to Maria Callas throughout her career. Not a burden, but a gift, I think. There are times when the voice does have the "Callas color", particularly in this aria. Sass's voice has more veluto than I find in Callas's singing. Sass lacks those shimmery downward portamenti of which Callas was the supreme master. Callas is still my favorite in this rep, but Sass is delightful.
This is a hell of a lot better than what we hear nowadays, with beautiful legato, facile un-aspirated coloratura, and wonderful weight of tone. For me, her great shortcoming was her mushy diction, which took away from the crispness of the singing and gave the impression that she didn't know what the words meant (rather like Sutherland).

A cabaletta consists of two identical strophes, sometimes separated by a "tempo di mezza", which can consist of a dialogue with another singer, and sometimes ending with a coda. It is costumary that the singer embellishes the second strophe of the cabaletta and perhaps adds a cadenza at the end (this can also be done between the two strophes). The cabaletta here starts at 6:43.

Other good examples are "Carlo vive" from "I masnadieri" and "Sempre libera" from "Traviata." Wikipedia is a good source for opera/music terms like cabaletta, cavatina, etc.
Purtroppo, I don't speak French, but she certainly did not sing "coooosta diva"! Please! While her Italian diction was never "perfect" (although her initial "casta diva" "a" vowel was no darker than that of the great Callas), no one could, in their right mind, deny that this was a great, great soprano, vocally, technically, and dramatically. One of the greatest ever to walk the planet, in my opinion.
"Cabaletta" refers to "at a horse's pace" -a final coda sung at a fast tempo to bring the scene to a climax and is a device used by Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini, and eve Verdi. But by the time Wagner, Weber, Puccini and the verismo composers produced their operas the practice of including cabalettas was discontinued.
Sylvia Sass had many great qualities.A pity she seemed to lose her way vocally over the years. Hasmik Papian has been mentioned - she sings with an incredible legato line and that has preserved her voice.

she's my very favourite among new stars in the 80's when i first picked up opera. as a tenor myself, i've been studying and practising voice for 32 years. after listening to her over the years with the HUNGAROTON recording in MEDEA and DECCA recording in her best in bellini, donizetti and verdi, i must say, her support of breath has constant and obvious problems. just carefully notice the last breath of each last note of each phrase. it stops in the middle of the air. what can you say?
This IS a covered Lyric Soprano in order to give the impression of a heavier voice. It CANNOT be HEARD in the FORTE passages. Listen to ROSA PONSELLE, FLORENCE AUSTRAL and NINON VALLIN. Real projection of the voice does not require manipulation
She had great sensitivity, a very moving artist. However on a purely technical basis she didn't really have a good breath span or control. She disguises this very well here by her wonderful musical intentions, but later on things would become very dificult for her vocally . When she sang this role at Covent Garden i believe there was a fight in the gallery one night between those who liked her and those who didn't. Just like going back to the old days of opera!

Casta Diva manifiestamente mejorable, pese a la excelente voz. Luego el Ah bello a me ritorna, me recordaba a Alliberti, cayendo tanto en el pianissimo, como temerosa de sacar la voz. Voz buena, pero, no ha sido su interpretación estelar la de esta escena.
I've read that she damaged her voice by singing Wagner too often too young. (Early 20's) Too bad. She was a great beauty and would have had a bigger career.

Non e' tutt'oro cio' che canta ma le scalette cromatiche discendenti sono perfette. Con una certa "applicazione intelligente" sarebbe stata una Norma, ma senza studiare bene i recitativi e l'accento...non e' un ruolo semplice e con una tecnica approssimativa, la Sass, e' pero' naufragata nella cabaletta.
Nice singing,but what do you mean by "the last great Norma"? Since this performance,a bunch of great sopranos sang the role of Norma as good as this,or even better. Just from the top of my head...Hasmik Papian,Daniela Dessi,Edita Gruberova,Fiorenza Cedolins,Anna Netrebko,etc,etc,etc. Trust me,I've heard a shitload of different versions...this is my fave opera.
Franz Blum Van Edita Gruberova is probably my least fave from those I mentioned,but let's not forget something...she was 65(!) when she sang Norma! And Netrebko...yes,one could call her overrated,but only if one got stuck in the past and can't get over Maria Callas' death.In my book Netrebko deserves the hype,cos she's not just an excellent soprano,but also she did breathe a whole new life to this otherwise very conservative genre.

Lucia Alberti fue otra soprano que por imitar a María Callas no lograron una carrera consolidada, de hecho, Sass tuvo un esplendor muy breve. Acertado, hay vacilaciones de orden técnico, la línea de canto no se plasma del todo y su diccón fue abominable. Una lástima, pues tuvo un enorme potencial Sylvia Sass. Saludos desde México.
In many ways she does Callas better than Callas. Stop talking about how this isn't her "natural voice". All operatic instruments are manufactured, it's the nature of the medium and of technique. What matters here is how brilliantly she delivers this! Last great Norma indeed!!!
Her technique is wonderful and I love her simple decoration in the begging of verse two and her subtle approach to something so powerfully dramatic music wise but she is connected to the text and gives a just interpretation to the aria. One wonders what happened to such a wonderful artist. BTW this orchestra's intonation sucks!

I’ve always thought Sass’ voice sounded like Joan Sutherland’s if she were more of a spinto.
How successful she was in the complete role I have no way of knowing but here she has some marvelous moments.

I think this woman is a truly wonderful opera singer after Callas and Caballe. She holds her notes like the old generation of Ponselle and others.

Beautiful voice and style, although I find her deportment a bit self-indulgent. I disagree with viva tebaldi. I think she is stunning.

Casta Diva manifiestamente mejorable, pese a la excelente voz.
Luego el Ah bello a me ritorna, me recordaba a Alliberti, cayendo tanto en el pianissimo, como temerosa de sacar la voz.
Voz buena, pero, no ha sido su interpretación estelar la de esta escena.
I've read that she damaged her voice by singing Wagner too often too young. (Early 20's) Too bad. She was a great beauty and would have had a bigger career.

Non e' tutt'oro cio' che canta ma le scalette cromatiche discendenti sono perfette. Con una certa "applicazione intelligente" sarebbe stata una Norma, ma senza studiare bene i recitativi e l'accento...non e' un ruolo semplice e con una tecnica approssimativa, la Sass, e' pero' naufragata nella cabaletta.
Nice singing,but what do you mean by "the last great Norma"? Since this performance,a bunch of great sopranos sang the role of Norma as good as this,or even better. Just from the top of my head...Hasmik Papian,Daniela Dessi,Edita Gruberova,Fiorenza Cedolins,Anna Netrebko,etc,etc,etc. Trust me,I've heard a shitload of different versions...this is my fave opera.
well edita has no strong voice for singing this and netrebko is overrated

Edita Gruberova is probably my least fave from those I mentioned,but let's not forget something...she was 65(!) when she sang Norma! And Netrebko...yes,one could call her overrated,but only if one got stuck in the past and can't get over Maria Callas' death.In my book Netrebko deserves the hype,cos she's not just an excellent soprano,but also she did breathe a whole new life to this otherwise very conservative genre.
+Clansy74 I am with you, there have been greater Norma's since. Actually Sass was never a great Norma. I'm afraid another singer suffering from being compared to Callas.
+Robert Donkers To be honest,I don't even understand why people keep compare singers to each other? In the end what someone finds the best, always comes down to personal preferendum.
Netrebko? Guberrova? is this a joke? the only that is the top of Norma is Callas, the Sutherland, period
Lucia Alberti fue otra soprano que por imitar a María Callas no lograron una carrera consolidada, de hecho, Sass tuvo un esplendor muy breve. Acertado, hay vacilaciones de orden técnico, la línea de canto no se plasma del todo y su diccón fue abominable. Una lástima, pues tuvo un enorme potencial Sylvia Sass. Saludos desde México.

In many ways she does Callas better than Callas. Stop talking about how this isn't her "natural voice". All operatic instruments are manufactured, it's the nature of the medium and of technique.
What matters here is how brilliantly she delivers this! Last great Norma indeed!!!
Norma necesita una extraordinaria voz con una sólida técnica. Sass canta con miedo, la voz se fatiga hacia el final...

Her technique is wonderful and I love her simple decoration in the begging of verse two and her subtle approach to something so powerfully dramatic music wise but she is connected to the text and gives a just interpretation to the aria. One wonders what happened to such a wonderful artist. BTW this orchestra's intonation sucks!
