- Nombulelo Yende performing "Sediziose voci... Casta diva" from Bellini's opera Norma during the first round of the 2023 Cardiff Singer Of The World competition.
The South African soprano started out in various theatres Capetown, in roles like Giulietta (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Serpina (La serva padrona), and Carolina (Il matrimonio segreto), among others.
Nombulelo joined Oper Frankfurt's Opera Studio in the 2021/22 season, where she made her European debut singing Der Huter der Schwelle des Tempels and Falke (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Lover (Il tabarro) and Suor Dolcina (Suor Angelica). Upcoming roles include Tchaikovsky’s Charodeyka, Die Aufseherin (Elektra), and her role debut as Tatyana in Eugene Onegin.

Magnifique ! la voix est superbe, la technique parfaite, la présence majestueuse. Those voices from South Africa made me feeling something I had forgoten during those past decades in belcanto.
It makes me feel things things I don't feel often. It's something special, something beyond technique.

Wobbly, pitchy. Haven't seen a single performance of hers where she managed to sing in tune.
She goes flat so much, it's really incredible how "singer of the world" could describe such a mess. It's not mean spirited, it's just any trainer ear listening to her. Yet there she is in international competitions. The opera world has lost its god-damned mind. I saw a woman win the oratorio competition in New York and she completely was changing the text on all the wrong pitches in Erbarme Dich. And one of the most recorded countertenors was one of the judges. It was like r u kidding me? This one here, she's not only wobbly, the actual emission of the sound is quavery, it's not even wobbly. Wobbly is when they're out of tune with their vibrato getting in the way. This is like fundamental singing errors.

I compare every soprano who sings this to Callas. This girl sings the first part with real pathos.. the aria needs to be softer..but it's real good. Norma fits her voice well.big voice too. Needs time and polish. Heck of a voice

Sicuramente una voce importante ma ancora grezza e con difetti di tecnica Nell attacco dei suoni nel sostenere il suono e nel realizzare piani e pianissimo... Deve smussare ancora parecchie cose nondimeno e passabile rispetto a tante voci orribili.... La scelta di questa romanza è quanto mai azzardata visto ancora l insicurezza della tecnica.

Yes an impressive instrument indeed. Tempo is too slow. Some of the passaggio notes are inaudible, plus she tends to stray out of tonal focus. She needs to learn how to use her hands.
