I said this at the time. The level of control that United exerted against City, even though they only had 30% possession is something I’ve not seen before. From the possession stats alone, you might think United were soaking up loads of pressure to hit on the break, like they did under Ole. In fact, United never once looked like they were going to lose that game. Ten Hag = top G

Neville highlighting this whole "style of play" thing is so spot on. Ole was constantly berated for winning games playing counter-attacking football, like somehow there's only one correct way to get 3 points boring the opposition into submission like Pep. ETH has principles or as he fondly likes to say “the rules” and he believes in himself and his team to tactically outsmart the opposition. What I love about our manager is his quiet confidence which permeates throughout the club and to the fans. And when everyone in the squad knows there are consequences if you break “the rules” they start to self-govern themselves to do the right thing on the pitch.
P.s. I’m not annoyed anymore when I hear the word “philosophy” because he can execute on his plans. ✌🏼

Against City we defended really well, but it would be nice to see more of that. We still look too easy to get past at times when we lose the ball. Not fast enough getting back into shape etc. Sides still fancy being able to score against us. They also seem to think they can rattle us and put us off our game. Leeds did that pressing us high and winning most second balls etc. But what was good was how the side adjusted to that and were able to fix the problem on the fly. Even in the first half. Could have won that match.
P.S. I'd bet on Arsenal faltering. I am not sure MUFC has enough yet to challenge though. Much of it is down to luck and how many of our squad stay available. City might win it and then have it taken off them in summer, along with four or more other titles. Seems the EPL is out to make an example of them (it may be encouraged too, because the powers that be are peeved about the oil princes not falling in line over stuff going on in the world).

    • @dafunkyshit
      @dafunkyshit Год назад +1

True but we are nowhere near as porous as we were under Ole. I have been re-watching some old games we played under him and a lot of the time each game was like a tennis match. It's not surprising that we could be torn apart with the McFred midfield.
The difference with having Casemiro in the team vs not having him in the team is absolutely shocking and he contributes a lot to the defensive solidity and he wins a lot of second balls. We have no depth in midfield.
Another issue I see is the lack of ability to progress the ball quickly into the opposition third. When we were playing tennis under Ole, especially earlier on, teams weren't pressing us as much which gave us the freedom to move the ball quickly.
Eriksen and Casemiro are great at moving the ball forward. Without them, it becomes very difficult for us to beat the press.
What we really need is a ball-carrying mid. FDJ does not look like he will leave Barca any time soon, so we need to find someone who can do that instead.
As for titles being stripped off City, the latest news is that it might take up to four years before that matter will be resolved...

    • @bighands69

That is not even close to being true. Under Ferguson Utd were all about possession. It was one of the main components of the style. Keane and Scholes in midfield were masters of the possession game that meant they could change the tempo of a game through possession slowing it down to take the sting out of the opposition or speeding it up to make the opposition go on the back foot.
Utd could play counter attack but that was not the main aspect of their style. Many of the fergie time goals came about from Utd pressing teams as they kept possession. It would not have been possible for Utd to win many of their games like that without playing possession football.

Casemiro is not a CDM. He is a central midfielder. That means he operates from the centre not the defensive half. People are using the term CDM incorrectly in the modern game.
Casemiro is a good quality central midfield player that can tackle and pass the ball and is very determined. Ironically he is the exact same type of player that Souness was in his prime.

De Gea's skills with the ball at his feet is the most misinterpreted subjective opinion I see brought around as facts. He's pretty decent with his feet, but as the United keeper you get judged 3 times as hard as other goalies. If you look at mistakes that lead to goals for instance and compare him to Allison, Neuer and Ederson, they mostly have 1 each in the last 2 seasons. 20/21 Allison have 3. 19/20 Ederson and De Gea both have 3. 18/19 De Gea had 4 and Allison 3.
So actually the last years, he barely makes a mistake. But yet there's this opinion that De Gea makes a lot of errors, yet you see other goalies clowning around, like Neuer, but apparently they are perfect. De Gea plays to his skills perfectly. But if someone high presses you, what is he going to do, dribble players?
The way I see it it's the United judgement, same as if United wants to buy a player he's 3 times as expensive as if Arsenal wants to buy him. And on top of that a PL club buying a player is already 3 times as expensive as a French club buying a player. Just look to the Portugese stories lately to see more about that, they are laughing their asses off in those clubs counting money when Liverpool or United come knocking.

I am not too keen on the idea that Manchester United should always be dominant. All tactics should be about maximize your strengths and minimize the strength of the opponent. Take Sir Alex Fergusson, what was his style of playing. Well in my mind, it depended partial on the squad that he had at the time but mostly on the opponent. He played once with 7 defenders in one game, and once he played with Patrice Evra as sole defender. Tactics is never about playing your style of playing, it is always to see the strength in your team and use the weakness in your opponent. Tactics is always about being able to adapt. For example Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp's team has struggled this season. Would you say that Jurgen Klopp has adapted his tactics during the struggle of the players that he has?

Pained me to do it but I agree with Gary here. It’s quite disrespectful to other top sides to have this arrogant expectation that we’ll walk into the lions den, their home stadium, mug them off with dominating the ball and boss them. That’s just not realistic tbh. These are top sides and top rivalry. I believe in how it used to be in breathe, get through the first 10/20 minutes and get a foothold in the game to then work from there.

I would rather watch a counter attacking football than be put to sleep by that notion of playing from the back killing the game with boredom. Robots can execute that so why should we be bored to death watching our team play that type of football?
