Congratulations and thank you for sharing your experiences. I have to buy a new truck soon. I own a construction company and am also a recently retired commercial pilot. Lots of kids and grandkids and I use my trucks for work and long road trips with family. If I could…. I would change the following on RAM HD trucks…. (1) I would use the 1500 crew cab in its HD trucks. In addition to the panoramic, I’d offer a sun roof like on your truck. (2) power telescoping and tilt steering wheel (3) power pedals (4) ambient lighting throughout (5) slightly higher payload and towing on both 2500 and 3500. (6) 8 or 10 speed transmission. (7) I absolutely love the Limited Longhorn but HATE THE cowboy boot stitching on the seat cushions. (8) I wish RAM offered the same forward cover on the center console. (9) I’d like Ram to offer some new and additional colors. I’d love a very dark charcoal color between granite and black. I’d like a dark blue boarding on black. I’d like a new richer red instead of Demonico Red (spelling) and I’d like two whites, standard bright and a richer metallic tri-coat. Finally I believe FORD offers the best heads up display. I’d like to see RAM to “one up” Fords version. I’d like to see RAM offer the multi split tailgate and the ram box on the 2500/3500. Even with the changes I’d like to see…. I know RAM won’t make any of these changes. If anything they’ll reduce options and cut quality to increase profitability like Ford and GM are currently doing access the board.
What's the AMPG consumption? I got a 2020 3.0 ecodeasel, and it was making 27 average miles per galon with the original tires, but now, with my new, all terrain tires is making 24 AMPG.
Great review! nice cam in the back for easier hitch ups, looks like! I'm 5'7" too, but dang I know I will need running boards. i do like that extra pull out step feature on the back. Is the bed long enough to drive up a VW Thing on there? They only weigh about 2,000 pounds, if I remember correctly... Also, are you going to use some kind of theft deterrents for the fuel and the catalytic converter? I put some locking lug nuts on my vehicle tires and on the Scamp (thus far) because yes, even tires are getting stolen, and steering wheel lock bar. Anything to slow down the thieving vermin. I also put Tiles Mates (simple, inexpensive) in some places for extra tracking. Thank you for mentioning a Faraday cage type thing for keys. I had not heard of those, will certainly get that (not on your Amazon page, is it?) Isn't it about 10,000 miles before a diesel is truly broken in? or is that rumor. Can't wait to see what you do for add ons! And which trailer you will get!
That tailgate camera is a must have now, even slapping one on an old truck makes things SO MUCH easier when hitching up. Maybe one adjustment when hitching up solo rather than 3 minimum! No theft deterrents for diesel, though we've never had trouble with that. I know there are locking caps that can be found like we have on Lenny though! No catalytic converter on these, just the stupid DPF. I should get a big sticker that says, "No catalytic converter on this truck, dumbass. Move along." I'm sure the idiots around here cutting them off can't read too well anyhow, not sure how much good that would do lol I've not specifically tested this, though this is one I would absolutely pick up and try. amzn.to/4dQEkj6 It's an easy test to record your screen, check signal, put it in the box, close the box, give it about 30 seconds and see if the signal completely drops. I expect if it works for the phone, it should work well for the keys too! I've heard so many answers, though an older version of the manual for the 6.7L I-6 Cummins is: The Cummins turbocharged diesel engine does not require a break-in period due to its construction. Normal operation is allowed, providing the following recommendations are followed: • Warm up the engine before placing it under load. • Do not operate the engine at idle for prolonged periods. • Use the appropriate transmission gear to prevent engine lugging. • Observe vehicle oil pressure and temperature indicators. • Check the coolant and oil levels frequently. • Vary throttle position at highway speeds when carrying or towing significant weight. NOTE: Light duty operation such as light trailer towing or no load operation will extend the time before the engine is at full efficiency. Reduced fuel economy and power may be seen at this time. I'm usually pretty light on the motors for the first 5K miles and then I run them super hard at least 2x/mo on the freeways to get the injectors and DPF super hot and clean, but who knows if that's even helpful. Just my superstitions!
We got a Patriot Blue (gorgeous color) 2024 tradesman RAM 3500 and our lower convex mirrors are wider. Must be the tech in the mirror you have. We don’t have keyless entry. We have to push the button on the fob so it is nice to know that we are no longer subject to someone doing the RFID and opening it without a fob at all. Course having had keyless I keep walking up to the truck and pulling on the handle before realizing it wont open without me pushing a button on the fob!!! LOL Also our 2024 hood does not have that hump. Interesting the difference in the trims. We purposely got the Tradesman level for the less tech and higher payload because less weight from options. This gave us 4200 in payload for our 5ver. Also the lower trim gave us all our buttons and dials!!!!!! Love your truck!
I don't blame you one bit! Yeah, it must be the extra tech. I love this truck, but for me I don't care about most of the features, I probably could have gone with the Tradesman, and just upgraded some of these features anyways, making something more custom! Patriot Blue, that's awesome!
On the gear changing moving from the gear shift to the steering wheel, I can see why they did it. In my 2017 it’s easy to hit the button on the gear shift when you don’t need to. Plus (for me at least), if I need to downshift, it’s because of the mountains I’m driving through and it’s more natural to do that on the steering wheel rather than going to the gearshift. My 2 cents.
I can see that! I think the awkward part for me is that that's the only button I have to move my hand away from their natural positions for, but I also can see accidentally hitting it too! Thankfully that wasn't ever an issue with either previous RAM I had.
I just hate that hood, hate it! I still love the Ford Super Duty mirrors much better, but everything else is just a subjective argument of what you like. I think it looks as good as any truck you could have chosen, you made a great choice. You guys can buy a running board/step that you like for a decent price and easy to install. And you little tiny baby sunroof is so cute... lol. My F350 rides as good on the road as the F250, but OMG... you take the F350 off road without a load to move those springs and you can chip your teeth on the bumpy roads... that sucks. I like the seats on your truck, they are very comfortable, but they rob you of the rear center seat being cut short because of the center console sticking into the back. I still like how Ford does the back seat area where it has a much flatter space with the seats up. I just noticed Joel's head fits in a bit of a rise in the ceiling to create the headroom or is that an illusion? The floor mats are excellent to have, an excellent upgrade. The steering wheel bothered me too when I test drove it as I really love the telescoping ability of the Ford. The dash is, once again, a preference and I love my fully digital screen. I missed it or you just did not bring it up, but do the side mirrors extend out in case you are towing? But as you show us around, there is nothing to not like about that truck. It always feels really good to sit and drive in a new truck! Enjoy every minute. Be very careful as a new DEF vehicle owner to be sure you never make the mistake of putting DEF in the Diesel fill, thats bad! The best part is when Emma said she loves that truck and that is all that matters!
That sunroof on the Super Duties is wild, it really would make for some great truck camping! And there is a little notch for my head in the ceiling there which I hadn't noticed prior to making the video! I haven't actually tested the side mirrors, I will have to get back to you on that. I know my previous ones didn't but just flipped up and were definitely wide enough as they were. There's a button that may very well push those suckers outwards! I'd been so afraid of accidentally contaminating the diesel fill and thankfully it never happened, though this has a blue cap on the DEF and nothing on the diesel fill, unlike my last truck, which makes me think this may be a little easier to accidentally spill... Knock on wood!
Yep! I've never used the first setting, I much prefer the exhaust brake only when I press the wheel brakes. The cost of diesel is absolutely worth it to me for this feature alone, it definitely helps on long descents!
Geez - Emma loves it but Joel is bent on presence of carpet and non-telescoping steering wheel stock. It's a tough world. Beautiful truck but I doubt I'd ever grasp and remember how to use everything that's built into it. It would be easy to estimate its cost if the criteria was to just cost by the total number of knobs, buttons, and switches. The openings on the hood also allow heated air to escape the engine bay when the truck is parked. There's a lot in there that's going to be at operating temperature when it stops. Nice room for Sam and Colt. Add a swivel plate mechanism under the passenger seat for Emma. Can we all assume you've made the final decision on the tow-able, if not already ordered and you know it won't be coming off the assembly line until late October - early November? Have fun customizing your truck.
Hahaha I try to be open about everything to keep the nay-sayers at bay a bit. The truck is sure fantastic, but there has to be SOMETHING we don't like! There sure are quite a few dials and buttons, especially when you get into the screen menus. That's where it gets pretty wild! We have finished our order up and we're just waiting for the final production date currently. We have secured a slot as of right now that's "around November to early December" from what we're told. This is sure better than "two years out" as this company was in 2021!
Although I have never had a diesel I am a fan of cummins from people i know that have had them and what I have read about them. So that statement means nothing since I've never had one. But the tour was good and it looks really cool. Think you can convert Lenny it to a towable lol then just pull Lenny ;-)
Good question! I've had the grey/tan headliner with the last two trucks, and absolutely hated it. The materials get dirty easier, show fingerprints more often and I see where the bottom half black and the top is tanish. I just don't like it, I like the continuity and it's a lot more comfortable for me. Having sensitive eyes, it really helps with reducting reflections in bright, sunny weather. And for tint it really helps to not require so much tint in order to make it more difficult to see inside being that light isn't bouncing around as much!
The biggest downside with dodge trucks is their resale value. The average for a 5 year old ram is 54% of original price. My dad has a 1/2 ton limited and he really loves it, had lots of of bells and whistles. I’ve always stuck to the gmc duramax’s, for me they have best resale. But the biggest issues is buying new, I pretty much paid sticker for my 2500 Denali, but ram knocks off lot more from sticker and run at least $10k less. But overall still nice trucks. Oh by the way if your truck has the leather dash, pay attention because it may bubble and peal, it is a design or material flaw with ram.
I thought about that when we got our Holiday Rambler! Unfortunately, you do not need to have a Montana driver's license to title and register your vehicle in Montana, but you do need to prove residency in the County you are attempting to register your vehicle in. If you don't have a Montana driver's license you will have to present one of the following forms of ID AND either a lease agreement or a property tax statement showing your physical address. I'm sure we could have figured out a way to obtain a physical address, just a bit more work.
I'm with you! Buttons are easier to press by memory rather than messing with menus and nonsense just to turn seat warmers on anyways. People want more tech. It's wild.
@LifeIsAJourney4Us good choice! I wanted the 8" unit but couldn't find them equipped. I guess they order what they think people will want or "more shiny" 😂
Nice truck, but that hood is not doing it for me. Anything brand new is great, it all boils down to personal choice, not much difference between all the big auto makers. Love my Ford, no complaints after 8 yrs and she still is pretty.
