  • The Shadows performing their rendition of "Apache", released originally in July, 1960.
It reached #1 on the Ireland (Evening Herald) chart, #4 on the Australia (Kent Music Report) chart, #6 on the Germany (Official German Charts) chart, #10 on the Netherlands (Single Top 100) chart, #1 on the New Zealand (Lever Hit Parade) chart, and #1 on the UK Singles Chart.
In March 2005, Q magazine placed "Apache" by the Shadows at number 96 on its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks.
It was written by English songwriter and composer Jerry Lordan and first recorded by Bert Weedon. Lordan played the song on ukulele to the Shadows while on tour, and liking the song, the group released their own version which topped the UK Singles Chart for five weeks in mid-1960.
Lordan came up with the tune in the late 1950s. Lordan was inspired to write the song after watching the 1954 American western film Apache, saying that he "wanted something noble and dramatic, reflecting the courage and savagery of the Indian Apache warrior Massai, played by Burt Lancaster.
It was originally recorded by British guitarist Bert Weedon in early 1960, but remained unreleased for several months due to promotion and release problems. However, Lordan did not like Weedon's version of the song, as he thought it was too jaunty.
For this reason, whilst on tour with Cliff Richard and the Shadows, Lordan played the song on his ukulele to the Shadows, who liked the song and recorded it in June, quickly releasing it in July, 1960.
Singer-guitarist Joe Brown had bought an Italian-built tape echo unit that he did not like and gave it to The Shadows' guitarist Hank Marvin, who developed a distinctive sound using it and the tremolo arm of his Fender Stratocaster.
Bruce Welch borrowed an acoustic Gibson J-200 guitar from Cliff Richard, the heavy melodic bass was performed by Jet Harris, and drums by Tony Meehan. Richard himself played a Chinese drum at the beginning and end to provide an atmosphere of stereotypically Native American music.

In a Grammar school near Manchester England in 1962, the music master came into class and told the 1st year boys that he had met Hank and had a coffee with him in a cafe in North Wales, and that Hank had said that his one regret was not learning to read music. This was almost certainly a big, compound fib - but I remember it after all these years, and Hank bless him, is still with us to tell us so if he chooses.

@@Kevin-mx1vi I guess I was somewhat right back then when I was kid. Just never thought about it that deeply being an influence for western TV shows and films. More of feeling listening to "Apache" when it was played on the radio airwaves which it would have been good for a western film theme back then in the 60's. Which comes to mind now that I think about it, I always did like the theme as well for the TV western show that was on prime time on NBC, 'The High Chaparral' which takes place in Arizona.

I’ve always loved this melody ’APACHE❣️😄 Makes me think of the days years ago when I would race my mare over the wide open country of South western Montana where I grew up, hearing the rhythm of her hooves against the hard, dry ground, feeling the power in her hind legs, watching her mane flying behind her strong neck with each sure stride and my own hair streaming behind me in the wind. We would quietly and steadily climb a particular high hill, stop at the top,for brief breather, then RACE downhill to join in with the fleeing group of about 30 to 40 head of elk. Before long they would leave us behind, but it was a thrill to be almost able to reach out and touch these large, powerful yet graceful cousins of the deer family❣️I still feel that thrill of rushing along on my strong and quick-footed little red mare, and my heart begins to race again when I hear ‘APACHE’❣️😄❤️

As a small child in Ireland in 1960, I was forbidden from singing along with popular music songs, and only allowed to sing traditional Roman Catholic Mass songs, such as the "Kyrie" and "Who's Father Keeler been touching now, anyway?"
But then this song came out. And my father, stern taskmaster though he was, allowed me to listen and to learn this song.

I've been obsessed with this song for a few days now. I thought they were closer to 30 years old at first. There is every 'type' from the 1950s counter-culture, except maybe the Jazz-man. You've got bookish Hank with the Buddy Holly glasses, the pool-hall hustler, the James Dean-inspired Rocker, and the clean-cut sweater frat-boy. And somehow they all look cooler to me than anyone I could imagine today.
