Tbh as someone who values all martial arts, the sort of "theatrical" ninjutsu is boring. Real Shinobido was about subterfuge. Get in, fuck shit up, get out. They weren't warriors, they were assassins. So a lot of the "Ninja vs. Knight" shit is like comparing apples to oranges. They're two different things. Shinobi were assassins, spies, and saboteurs. And one thing a lot of people don't realize is that during the height of Japanese martial history (the Sengoku Jidai), Shinobi would primarily use guns, not Shuriken, or whatever the hell else people think they used.

I'm sad that I missed the posting of this video when you first released it, Skallagrim. These two videos are the first two that I've seen of yours, and the only reason that I stumbled on the first of the two is because I recognized the man, the myth, the legend Jeffrey Prather. That being said, I gotta say I'm impressed with the quality of the content that you put out.
I was a student of the Bujinkan dojo from age 13 - 17, and let me tell you it was an interesting experience. I wasn't directly a student of Prather-shihan (as we called him), but he was the sensei of my sensei as it were. The best way I can describe "Jeffrey" as you call him (which I love, btw) is that he is a Very Big Deal in the Bujinkan dojo. He is the epitome of what every single one of those black belts in the video want to become. Jeff Prather is one of the original students of the Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi who then went back to America to spread the word of Bujinkan. The way that he is spoken of in the Bujinkan dojo is equivalent to speaking of the avatar of a deity that has graced us with his presence. In this metaphor, of course, Hatsumi is the deity.
Because of this legendary status that Prather has, his students all want to BE him. They want to do everything to please him. And if they do *anything* to upset his demonstrations (e.g. swinging a sword *at* him instead of where he was standing at the beginning of the demonstration), they will get scolded and abused for "ruining the demonstration", and then told to sit down and be replaced by another "Uke". The feeling is that if you play the good boy and do receive the technique in a way that makes Sensei look good, you might get noticed and get your next belt. If you're not part of the "in" crowd, you get nothing and go nowhere in the dojo.
It breeds a culture of compliance and submission, which, ironically, is exactly the opposite of what they're shooting for.

Interesting. I've done a bit of bujinkan, and my sensei's sensei went to train in Japan with a direct pupil of the Grandmaster. He did manage to have a few practice sessions with the Grandmaster himself.
One thing that he told us when he came back was that the Grandmaster had told him straight to his face, that the bujinkan learned throughout the world is basically bullshit. Hatsumi popularised it, but also changed the art so that a lot of it is just crap. The real bujinkan ninjutsu is only known to him, his direct pupils and a few others. Every other bujinkan in the world is basically a watered-downed, crap version of bujinkan.
My sensei's sensei got a taste of the real bujinkan when he had his few training sessions with the Grandmaster, and when he came back to Canada, he completely changed the training of all his students (including my sensei). He reworked the training from top to bottom to be closer to what he learned from the Grandmaster.

Grab it, yell like a fucking coked up tarzan as a first attempt to deter the opponent and just swing it if he seems to try to rush me while hoping that he's just panicked and in fight mode so I can have a free (horizontal) swing. Not very effectiv, no, but I'm stupid and untrained so this is more likely to actually let me have a response instead of just freezing up. Grab wood, scream like your nuts got tangled in jellyfish and swing when opponent comes near. Three simple steps that ensure I optimize my chance of both doing something and being effective.

    • @Ash-cq3sj
      @Ash-cq3sj 3 года назад +5

Pretty sure no competent swordsman would hold the sword over his head in that position when the groin catching happens to even get in that position. He's doing a full overhead 2h swing with a katana, because everyone knows a vertical overhead chop is the best way to use a sword, got to go straight for skull or collar bone, who goes for vitals anyway. Should also ignore the fact that he's perfectly motionless while doing said swing, seems legit. Might as well ignore he blocked 1 hand while we're at it, not like swordsman can just release grip from it and use the sword with other hand while this guy is playing with the marbles. And swordsman apparently has no legs so he can't do any footwork to counter that defense. It's just bs on multiple levels.
Even if by some magic he'd get to block the attack and hit the swordsman in groin/hip/whatever to try to get some form of advantage, he's still only got a flimsy hold on one of the swordsman hands, what happens if swordsman does 1 step back? either he tries to hold onto his hand and falls or releases and gets in perfect position to get a sword slash over his arms/chest. It might be a technique, but unarmed vs armed is never in favor of the unarmed person. Even if you do everything correct it's just a last ditch effort that most likely won't work.

yea just like you? did you actually watch the video? The whole point is not the Martial art itself. Its about the Person presenting it or rather how the person is presenting it. Skallagrim himself said he has a friend that trains in Bujinkan and can fuck someone up... If someone would Present HEMA in a stupid way people practicing it would also get offended if someone says HEMA is a scam martial art or whatever... And i know Skallagrim didn't say that Ninjutsu is bullshit but it makes it look like that especialy looking at comments like yours

When I was practising Aikido, our Instructor literally said: "Hit, like you want to actually hurt him. You should only stop/slow down directly before contact. But you should end with your hand on the target.", If we weren't resisting enough, he would change the technique, send us flying and then start the technique again, after reprimanding us for not reacting. (If we would resist too much, putting our full weight in the defense for example, we would also end with a short trip to the mat, followed by a "very funny, but let's show the others this technique first")
But Aikido is more about structually prohibiting the Partner from reaching you, so it is easier than in Hema or the techniques shown here.
The worst part with the staff is, that he effectively puts an effective weapon outside of his own reach and into the reach of the opponent. So now he has zero, while the enemy can grab either

That's why it can only be used on arthritic 98 year-olds who are helpless if you knock their canes away. It's a very specialized technique. Hahaha.

as someone who has been in an Aikido class, I can tell I could just have attacked any different way or just put some force to completely cancel any technique, and I'm a pretty weak dude, like I seriously could just be moved by a shove, but trying to move me by trying to move my arm it ain't going to work because I have a second hand that is more effective because you're using both hands and I can just attack
Aikido in general isn't a ""bad"" martial art, it's just is marketed as "it always works"

@@AlexSFM Not sure which techniques you're talking about, but unless you've learned antigrappling techniques from another martial Art, when i get a hold of you, you've got a big problem. Yes, Disarming is dangerous, but it is always dangerous if you are unarmed.
Yes, you cannot always throw, but you can restrict and when i've got one arm, i can stay out of reach of the other.
My question is, did you do more than on class of Aikido, because i had a guy a head larger than me struggle to reach me, when twisting his wrist.

I gotta say, Skall can remain amazingly calm under so much fire from people who definitely do not extend to him the same courtesy of being polite. Yes, not everything is worth getting angry about, but if you received several dozen (hundred?) comments that are attacking you, then even a mild-mannered person can crack under that. All of which is meant to say, respect to Skall for remaining so polite.

    • @kevincrady2831

Probably because Skall knows that if those guys ever actually came after him, he could kick all their asses in a way that would, ironically, look almost like one of those anime/martial-arts movie scenes where one fighter wipes out a whole mob singlehanded. And when they all limp back to their dojo bruised and moaning:
Prather: "You failed? All of you?! You are a disgrace to your dojo!"
      Student: "But...but he MOVED!"

I spared with a ninjitsu black belt once. Years of experience, training several times a week - running marathons in his spare time. I handn’t trained in a few years at this point, and was seriously out of shape. Every reset ended up with me kneeling on top of him while he wondered why none of his techniques worked.
Non compliant training is an absolute necessity, for every practitioner of every system.
