  • When travelling in Sri Lanka as a foreigner you'll no doubt be approached by men who try to appear as friendly citizens. They will attempt to coax you to somewhere, such as a "beautiful temple that you must go and see." Watch as this man follows me through the streets, desperately trying to convince me to go see the (fake) "Tsunami Temple", despite me showing zero interest in it.
These scammers and their cheap tricks are not representative of the genuine good people of Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, as foreigner, they will be seeking you out so it would be easy to think that every local is bad when in fact it's a very small number of bad people.

    2- ignore them😎
    3-say no 🙄
    4- walk fast 🚶🏻‍♂️
5- use your phone pretending your talking to someone .📱

ONE BIG TIP FOR TOURISTS: IF YOU NOTICE SOMEONE IS FOLLOWING YOU, DO THE FOLLOWING:
    1. TELL THEM YOU DON'T NEED THEIR COMPANY. USE A VOICE TRANSLATOR SO THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU MEAN
    2. STOP BEING SO NICE TO THEM. BE STRAIGHT FORWARD AND FIRM WITH WHAT YOU ARE SAYING
    3. STOP WALKING AROUND WITH THEM AND FIND A VERY PUBLIC PLACE AND OPENLY TELL THEM TO GO AWAY
    4. THREATEN TO CALL THE POLICE IF THEY KEEP FOLLOWING YOU OR ASK FOR THE NEAREST POLICE STATION AND TELL THEM TO COME WITH YOU TO TOUR THE POLICE STATION.
    THINGS YOU MUST NOT DO:
    1. DO NOT BE NICE TO THEM BECAUSE THEY INTERPRET THAT AS ACCEPTANCE OR TOLERANCE
    2. DO NOT OFFER THEM ANYTHING LIKE MONEY OR A DRINK OR FOOD
    3. DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO START A CONVERSATION OR SUGGEST ALTERNATIVE PATHWAYS
    4. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THEIR REACTION TO REJECTION
    5. DO NOT WALK AROUND WITH THEM BY YOUR SIDE OR RIGHT BEHIND YOU OR TOO CLOSE
    6. ONE MORE THING... DO NOT BE NICE TO THEM... REMEMBER THEY ARE DEFINITELY NOT GOOD PEOPLE

I had a similar situation in Cuba. I was there with my 13 year old daughter and a man kept following us. He said he knows the best place to buy cigars at a low price and kept trying to get us to go down alleys as we passed them. I told him no many times and he kept insisting we go with him. We were walking so fast and luckily found a little store to go in and he eventually left us alone. It was scary

Honestly in these situations, my first reaction is to keep walking. You don't owe anyone anything, especially some guy on the street. If he really wants to talk to me he's going to have to match my pace and walk with me. To stop and talk to these people just invites more opportunities for them to talk you into something and give them control over the conversation. Making it easier for them to manipulate you, and harder for you to pull away from the conversation, because most of us are afraid of being rude.

Unfortunately some of these people ruin the whole experience of some of the tourists who come less informed. Delhi, India is horrible when it comes to these scams and funnily most of them have been captured and documented on RUclips and yet they do the same moves from the old playbook.
I consider them more as pests than scammers since most of their schemes are so bunny brained and easy to spot unless you are a total idiot.

@Ravi Rav Whoa its absolutely clear that you are a tamilian bro. I understand your anger and its fair. I agree with everything you say except the word "Racist buddhist" it ain't right to criticise a religion/race with such a harsh word. Things happened in the country and they were bad i know but sometimes the best thing to do for peace is forget the past bro. There is nothing we can do in the field of politics. Power ain't in our hands. The politicians of our country use the differences between our races and religions to achieve their political selfish objectives. If we keep criticising the religions and races of ourselves then what is the difference between them and us? Moreover that is exactly what the want. To separate us. If you are not happy with the government trust me most of us are not but understand that though we can't do anything about that we can stand together. If we are united then those assholes will not have the chance to trigger our weakness and start off another civil war or whatever. Don't carry hatred or grudges bro. The scars and the wounds of the past will remain forever but atleast they don't hurt anymore right? There isn't a single place in the planet where wars hadn't taken place bro. In India they have castism in America still there is racism. Few other nations sexism. We are all controlled by our leaders and thats the fact. Please realise that hatred isn't the answer for anything bro. Respect all religions and races. BTW if you think Mahinda is wrong and so is Prabhaharan because Hatred isn't the answer for peace. War isn't the answer for peace. I think you've never been to the south or central of our country have you? Come and visit us you'll see how many non-racist sinhala buddhist are available in the country. You'll be shocked to see how many good people are living in this island. There are assholes in every place in the planet bro just misunderstand all the people for that. It's something like not all men are rapist are they? Won't you get mad when someone accuses you as such? That's the exact same feeling the non-racist people would get when you accuse them of being racist. We treat the foreigners as our brothers and sisters bro then why wouldn't we do that to our own people. No one is bad or racist in this country, it's just what the make us feel and what they want us to feel. Together we can change that and be a better nation, make a better nation for our children. Don't ruin that opportunity by spreading such hate comments and growing such harsh impressions in the younger generation of the country. If you are like this and so will your kids , so will their kids and so will there be another war in this country someday. Enough bro! please Lets end this.

I and my wife visited SRILANKA after the bomb blast on 18 May 2019
We met one travel agent like him at airport he was sooo sticky and irritating
He was forcing me much to book cabs hotels and sightseeing from him
I told him many times sir please I don’t need your help because I can do all with the help of internet
    But he was so crazy
I asked police at airport to take this man away from us because he was so sticky and forcing much to buy tourism from him.

Since we didn't buy any Jewelry, Coming back was hell as no one was willing to bring us back. Ultimately it cost us 5 times more to reach our hotel. Lesson well learned.

OMG!! the same person scammed me in the exact same place in 2016. He first claimed he was just showing me around because he likes helping tourists, then we ended up taking a rikshaw, which he stopped himself. After visiting few places, he stopped the rikshaw at an empty road where few people were passing by and asked me to pay a hefty amount of money. When I refused to pay the amount he asked for, he threatened to take me to the police and tell them I asked him to buy me drugs (which I didn't). When he saw that I wasn't afraid of the police, he started bargaining. I ended up paying only a fraction of the price he asked, and that wasn't cheap either. Lesson learnt!!

I've been to Sri Lanka a few times, you have to remember this is a poor country. People are struggling to make a few dollars.
Obviously sometimes people get desperate and start to think of other ways to make money.
It's tough for most of them
I had one tuk tuk driver offer to drive me anywhere all day and he would wait wherever I went for however long I took, and at the end of the day he only wanted $4. I couldn't believe it. It was literally hours or driving and waited 2-3 hours while I had lunch. They aren't elaborate scams, they are just trying to make a few $ to put food on their table.

They continued to try and tell me to pay, so I yelled Police. They let go of him and fled. Not the only scam that was attempted whilst there. I hate Paris. I am thinking of going to Sri Lanka. Part of the reason for visiting a country is to meet and interact with its people.
While you have to be weary of criminals and scammers, becoming paranoid can ruin your experience.
Avoiding anyone who is attempting to lead you to a particular place or area is always a good idea and needless to say. purchasing items from complete strangers will never work out well.
The main problem is that being street wise in your own country is fairly simple, but it is a lot harder in other parts of the world.

Tourists needs to know this first:
    1. First things first, get a prepaid SIM from the Airport or from some roadside communications shop (always get SLT or Dialog they have very good reception)
    2. Download the ride app Pick ME, this is the most used ride app in SL. When ever you wana book a Tuk Tuk or a cab to any where use this app or Uber only cos sometimes these ppl will rip you off once they see you are a foreigner.
    3. If anyone is following like this dont get into direct confrontation or anything just be polite but be smart as well and get away from them as soon as possible
    4. For Ladies I would like to advise you...if you are travelling alone, dont go out into areas that you dont know much of unless you are with someone who you can trust. Also be sensible, dress sensible and be on the alert at all times

I'm so impressed by your calm manner in dealing with this man. I love this country and especially the people! We too had a similar experience with a man hanging around our hotel in Negombo. We appeared to pick him up when we went for a walk. Slightly different in that he wanted to sell us some spices etc. We found it very hard to get rid of him, he just wouldn't get the message. Not as sinister as your scam but disappointing all the same. Way better than getting my wallet stolen in St Petersburg Russia, now that was devastating. Well done Dale

@@Dale_Philip LOL! I'll give you some vocab mate, no worries!
      1. "Mata epa" = I don't want (Mata = For me & "epa" = don't want/ no need)
      2. "Yanna" = simply "go"
      3. "Yana-wako yanna" = something to the effect "Can you get the hell out of my face?"
      4. "Pala-yan yanna" = this is more forceful and rude (I think this best suits "Get lost") Also stress "pala", like PALAyan yanna!
Obviously 3 and 4 are not considered filth, just forceful and rude.
An applicable filthy word in this context would be "PAKO", *PLEASE USE WITH CAUTION* The weight of this word is pretty much in the scale of "f*cker". You can place it absolutely anywhere (eg: all 3 works equally well - pako palayan yanna, palayan pako yanna, palayan yanna pako)

I visit vegas twice a year now for almost 2 years now going on a third year; love the food, and with a cheap hotel, you can eat cheap most days and save up enough money to splurge at a fancy place you wouldn't get to back home and the entire trip (I drive there, doesn't take long) ends up being well worth the price of the visit.
I got scammed 20 bucks one time and from then on I learned one of the best ways aside from not answering to the "where u from" question is to reply "I live here" even if they think or know i'm from out of town, i always reply that I live here followed by a "not interested" if I feel the need arise to add that bit on, and just keep. on. walkin'.
Also if you get offered free tickets to a show/gondola ride and what-not, then yes, it IS legit free stuff, after a 1-2 hour presentation that they chauffeur you to-and-back for free in order to sell you on a timeshare thats HELLA pricey and once you google this "scam" of which they ask you NOT to pull out your phones during the presentation (Obvious red flag there so you don't google them once you know their company name lol) you will find HELLA one star reviews because it's their job to sell you on the product, and not to follow through on the quality you were shown at the presentation that is obviously way too good to be anywhere near true.
Best to just pay for the 100-150 bucks to that Ka at Cirque de Soleil show or MJ experience that to sit through that salespitch again; just look for the people in purple/maroon colored suits and avoid them. But hey, if you want a free 79 dollar ticket to Zumanity then by all means.

My oldest brother stepped in to shoo the scammer away. My brother was obviously not interested in what the scammer had to offer, turned & walked away with my younger brother. The scammer yelled at my older brother "you asshole faggot!" BIG MISTAKE! Later on my younger brother told us that my older brother turned around, grabbed the scammer, and body slammed him into the concrete. Out cold. Discussion over. 👍👏👏

Similar scams to this in Thailand. Some random good Samaritan will stop you on the street and ask where you're going, then they tell you that attraction is closed for maintenance, they then say they can flag a tuk tuk and organise him to take you to a few alternate attractions. He flags down a tuk tuk who is the other partner in the scam and haggle the price down to make it look like you're getting a fair price, if you are naive enough to get in the tuk tuk the driver will ask you if he can take you to one extra place just to have a look, the place turns out to be a tailor shop where they have their high pressure sales pitch ready to go. The shop owner doesn't ask if you want a suit they just get the tape measure and get your measurements and then sit you down with a catalog and give you a free class of coke, sit down with pen in hand and order book open and ask you which suit you'll be buying. They don't take no for an answer until you stand up and walk out on them and get back in the tuk tuk. The tuk tuk then drives off and he says he needs to take you to one more place (they get cash payments for bringing customers and bonuses if the customer buys something). You get the general idea. The tuk tuks are notorious for this , taxis less so, they tend to scam by driving with the meter off or have the meter rigged to overcharge, so always go by the meter and watch it closely from the moment you get in the vehicle. As for the tuk tuks I recommend you avoid them completely. General advice is to do extensive research about scams at any place you plan going to, it will save you time, stress and money.

Dale, A job well-done buddy. Being a Sri Lankan I feel shame to see these type of clips, we call them nothing but "Pimps" always there to ruin the image of the Island by trying to play-out tourists one way or the other. The area where you were around is very famous for scammers for many decades.
My best tip to all tourists is so simple, any Sri lankans interact directly or indirectly with the Tourists/Visitors/Foreigners should listen to them very carefully to make sure that they are trying to signal you that they are a "kind of poor" for these "Pimps" pay nothing or little than what you initially intended to offer, still depends on subject. Usual Trick of the trade are as follows; 1.Not straight away, but may say, "My earning is not enough to look after my family that they are Poor or very poor". 2. May advise you "Sir/Madam Watch out when exchange your currencies to local currency" True, but travelers are well aware about it. 3. Criticizing the political status of our country. 3. trying to over pamper you. 4.They may fool you by learning your nationality, "oh I love Mongolians" if you say that you are from Mongolia. 6. They may advise you not to buy anything from this place or that and will go silence, they know soon or later tourists will seek advise to recommend a good place and tourist will end up paying double, triple or quadruple by purchasing products from where they recommended. 7. May attract you by an unbelievable offer for you to sell what you possess. 8. Be very careful with the three wheelers (Tuk Tuk) they fix you one way or the other by overcharge or take you for a long ride, we Sri lankans hate them too, the call cabs are far better. But, But, But please tip to all those behaved in a decent manner with what you can offer.
As a Sri Lankan I advise all Tourists/Visitors/Foreigners to act smart and not to allow these "Pimps" to bite you off. In general term Sri lankns are fairly decent.....Certainly, Sri Lanka is a very beautiful Island to explore....

We waved down a taxi ( Red) and asked him to quickly take us there. This guy must have thought we have no idea where the building was because we would have walked there. We were prepared to pay the minimum fee which was a few HK$. And it would not have been exceeding that had he taken us there right away. But this guy took off passed the building went around the block way passed, kept driving in circles and the more we told him to stop and stop fooling around the more he ignored us taking us for a ride. His meter just kept going. Eventually we were close to the building and the traffic light turned red. He was stuck. We had the initial ( correct) minimum fee on which the meter still stood as we passed our destination in the first go in our hand. We tossed it onto the seat next to the driver and jumped out.

I have had someone try a similar scam but on a train down to Galle. He spoke perfect English and told me he had a friend, a tuk-tuk driver who would take me to wherever I wanted to go. I knew this was a scam - anyone pretending to be friendly in a foreign country is usually intent on mischief. So I did what I used to do with time share sellers in Spain, I pretended I was Icelandic and spoke to him in gibberish when he kept pestering me. That silenced him on the train. But when we got to Galle station he desperately tried to steer me towards a tuk-tuk driver who appeared to know him. When I smiled and gestured that I would be walking the tuk-tuk driver became very angry with the scammer and took a swipe at him. I made off round a corner, leaving them to argue about the lost 'scam' while I took another tuk tuk to Unawatuna, checking the cost first - something you must always do.
