I liked your tank. It had a lot of movement, starting at the bottom right and zig zagging up to the top. That said I think it could have used a few punches of color. While I get what you were doing with a solid duo-tone, rewarding the viewer with some surprises at each direction change would have been a pleasure. I would add some splashes in the lower right, middle left, and finally a little something at the top right. Like little rest areas for the eyes.
I've just been watching this video, and got to number 21 & thought "wow, now that one is nice!" Came to see comments and this was the top. Totally agreed. Some inspiration there!
The better scapes all make the tank look bigger than it is through depth perception, and understanding rule of thirds, leading viewer focus, and light and shadows. Can see the difference in experience level of the participants. Great video! Good reference for my next nanoscape!
For me number 12 takes the win! I really feel like this is a cut taken out of a small tropical creek and that the small tetras call this their home! I would love to have that as a scape of my own, very well done!
For some reason i was immediately attached to #1, im not even in the hobby but that idea of the driftwood in the front, I was hooked. You didnt look at it like a picture, it pulled you in and immersed you in this underwater jungle of minimalism, with that wood in the front it gave a three dimensional experience that surpassed all others. IMHO i greatly respect the judge.
17 and 29 are my favorites. Both make me want to walk within the scape. In 17, I feel like the ocean is just over the ridge. And in 29, I want to explore the forest. Both had great depth of field and excellent attention to detail. Your cinematography is lovely.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video! I was watching this with my buddy and without knowing you were even part of the competition I'd commented on your setup mainly because as I was telling him, "Man I love how this looks natural and the the color of the rock and substrate was carefully chosen as it looks as if the rocks were slowly worn away over the years and formed the matching substrate!" Nice work. Very impressive. Subbed!
16 was my favorite but I remarked aloud to my wife when the first place entry came up. That is a truly unique layout! I’ve never seen hardscape up against the front glass, leaving an opening to view the layout behind the portal that opens up and creates incredible depth of field.
My husband and I sayd here two winners: #8 and #24. Now in 2020 #24 looks like fresh idea, light and shades and the contrast are in absolutly harmony. So we were surprised in the end of video! It is your! Great job!
Omg! I really loved your tank! I was looking for some inspiration because I just bought a nano tank, and I actually stopped the video to go back and play yours again (I didn't know it was yours yet) It really caught my eye! I enjoyed it very much, and I was mesmerized by how simple yet beautiful it was, I appreciated that it stood out from the rest. It's such a disappointment it didn't make it to the top rankings, but I felt really inspired by it! You have a new sub!
Great video. The only distraction was the reflection of the room lights on the top of the tanks. I am sure I would not have been able to get even close to your artistic presentation.
Loved the close ups but was a bit distracted by the reflection of the lights. I’d love to see a contest where everyone got a plain rectangular Aqueon 10 gallon from Petco, some sand, and a $50 decorating budget.
Others might have been faster to the web than you, but no one else can claim that their videos lower your blood pressure! You're workmanship is outstanding, in aquascaping and as a video editor.
8, 21, 27 and 29 are great nano tanks with 21 being my clear winner thanks to its great use of shadows and depth. Several others are good tanks too. I've now checked the placement and, yep, I'm not at all surprised by 21 winning.
I really enjoyed this video, as I am currently in the process of developing a 10 gallon (well, 9 gal) planted tank, with stones. These contestants provide a lot of great inspiration! Thank you for making it!
It actually looks like a dick. The stones on the bottom are the testicles, than the dick and the skull is actually the dick head. Damn. This is childish as fuck
I picked 4 tanks that I thought were amazing. Three of them were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and my fourth one came in 5th place. I chose these because they all gave the illusion of depth, in such a small tank. The 1st place tank also gave the illusion of height. I am planning to re-scape my similar sized nano tank, and I will surely get inspiration from this group of 29.
4...8...9...12.....15...17...18...21...25....27.....29. I'm quite surprised to see that all the winners were on the list I liked the most. BREATHTAKING SCAPES!! ❤❤❤
#24 :) It wa different than the stardard approach of "a piece of jungle". Looked like a small hill. Plus the substrate color was matching the rocks and emphasizing the green of plants. 3# caught my eye first but then faded away, lost in multiple clones of the same idea xD
wow.. many of the scape create lots of depth, really nice scape and your tank is stunning too! and also your video is superb! thanks for the videos, is great that those who cant attend aquatic experience like me get to enjoy the tank too
Thanks Rachel! I copied the registered names but I wouldn’t put it past me to have made a copy error! I love #17 as well, once the back stems grow in I bet it will feel much more complete!
I really appreciate the way u grade. Many of tank not even 3 months old including ur one. To c the real appearance of planted tank we have to wait minimum 5 to 6 months. Thats according to my knowledge. Sorry if im wrong 🙏
I love the ones with built structures, and depth. Some people put a lot of thought and perspective into their art. Some of them look thrown together. They need to have a good balance of hardscape and greenery. I like to look at an aquascape, and see a path to an unknown land. 🐡🐠
Wow, what an incredible video with the beautiful scapes and cinematic film. First of all, I think they all look very nice, competition was definitely intense at 2018 AE. My personal favorites, in no particular order; 3, 8, 9, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 23, 27, and 29.
I’ve never seen tanks so beautiful I wanted to cry. I saw several today. I’m in awe, this is truly art and I thank you for letting us enjoy it in peace. I came looking for inspiration for my paludarium, and I found techniques and ideas I never dreamed of.
I liked 3 a lot, but I actually also really liked 9. I did feel it was missing something, and it probably would have been better in a slightly bigger tank, but the rockwork was really cool, and I actually thought the impact of have just that one species of plant/moss growing in specific patches on the rock was very nice.
I just loved how you format this video. Such lovely aquascaping. Sadly I'm not a good judge as only one of my faves got any top spot. They're #15, #17, #18 & #7. Props to Katherine Wright #22 for bringing Hayao Miyazaki to aquascaping!
No surprises winners have a nice multi-layered scape, with a clear focal end point. Weird that some tank had a backlight and other did not, some of the other tank would have been really great with some backlight.
Thanks for this beautiful video ! I bought my very first Nano aquarium today and it's very inspiring. I found your tank beautiful but I must say I agree with the jury's choice and i know now what i want to do with my tank.
Absolutly the right winners, great scapes 👍 But i would have Switches the 3. Tank at 1. Place cause the Perspektive from it is very unique and gives it a very good athmosphere wich is in my opinion a tick better than the one which won
If you notice in the top 6 the left and right sides of the tanks are busy and a gap in the middle to see through with a change with the angle of vision. 1 2 3 5 have roughly the same idea. With the change of angle of point of view, you see the difference in depth. That is what i see and like. It is very hard to create, and turns out more interesting and beautiful. There were only like 2 in the whole set i was thinking WTH were they thinking. The rest were very nice. 1235 were the best in my pov. I wish i could do something that nice with my tanks to get the depth perception. Very impressive on the whole. Thanks for the video.
The key with the winning tanks was that the hardscape went all the way to the front of the glass. The winning tanks had rock and wood within an inch of the front panel. That really allows you to play with depth, but it does cut into the livable habitat for fish.
I liked your tank the best since i was planning on aquascaping. It gave me some ideas! I was looking for an aquascape without driftwood. Driftwood just didn't sit right with me. And i would personally add more plants in the tank. I really like carpeting and floating plants.
my favourites 6 by far and then 8 15 and 2 they were all stunning in there own way but these stood out to me awsome production, by the way, subbed so looking forward to watching more content
Nice work, Thanks for sharing! I really enjoy the full frame close ups -- I have decent sized monitors, and it makes for a truly 'immersive' experience. I would watch a feature length video shot close up of a planted aquarium ( see 1:45 in your "Eight Beautiful large Aquascapes video), set to music, if one happened to get posted....
I really enjoyed “judging” these as I watched. I paused and critiqued out loud. No one was around so basically I was talking to myself. Lol. I believe 5th place and 4th place should be switched. 3rd place was like an optical illusion. I had to take a minute and convince myself that the tank wasn’t 10’ from front to back. All artists had great ideas.
Your tank is ranked #1 for me, even though the top ranks looks natural, having seen thousands of natural aquascape makes it loses its magical touch, your tank is a 50% blend of man-made design and 50% natural design contained in a very clean and split layers making it very appealing to the eyes.
I liked quite a lot of these. My personal opinion: I would have voted the one that got #3 place as the top tank. The arc of the wood is visually interesting, and gives the tank both strong vertical AND horizontal interest. The other tanks tend towards one or the other. A few of these were, IMHO, not ready for show. The skull looks juvenile, like the divers or treasure chest bubbler toys of the 1970's.

Size of the tanks pls
Number 21, by John Pini was my favourite due to the multiple dimensions, depth and attention to scale, superb.
I've just been watching this video, and got to number 21 & thought "wow, now that one is nice!" Came to see comments and this was the top. Totally agreed. Some inspiration there!

This production was amazing! It actually allowed me to see them with a clearer mind thinks to the music and pace. Well done!
It gave me so many ideas .
😎👍

Cheers mate. I like this kind of video because I don't have to spend a fortune ro emulate someone else work.
No 7 - Just calm and lovely
This wasn't only a very good video (I'm just getting back into the hobby) but you also just introduced me indirectly to Chris Zabriskie. THANK YOU!!
Most of these were good, but some looked like they were hastily thrown together at the last minute.
They were I think contestants had 4 hours to put it together
You mean most were crap
I thought the same thing
100%
1st place definitely deserved the win ! I literally gasped when it came on screen - felt like a beautiful snapshot of a lost underwater world
Great video. The only distraction was the reflection of the room lights on the top of the tanks. I am sure I would not have been able to get even close to your artistic presentation.
10:00 the guy forgot his plants at home lol
I was watching this for inspiration for my tank and I actually screenshotted yours to my notes so you won in my eyes!
I don't know... But why I feel so much inspiring after watching the videos of Tank Tested!!!
Wow, your tank was so aesthetically pleasing and inspiring. It should've been in the Top 5.
Loved the close ups but was a bit distracted by the reflection of the lights. I’d love to see a contest where everyone got a plain rectangular Aqueon 10 gallon from Petco, some sand, and a $50 decorating budget.
The reflections were rough! I’d love to see a competition like that as well!
dude i just screenshot your tank without knowing and my mind was blown when u said that tank was yours . really nice and superb. 💯
Others might have been faster to the web than you, but no one else can claim that their videos lower your blood pressure! You're workmanship is outstanding, in aquascaping and as a video editor.

These tanks are absolutely stunning and you photographed them perfectly displaying their beauty. Great video. 👍
I really enjoyed this video, as I am currently in the process of developing a 10 gallon (well, 9 gal) planted tank, with stones. These contestants provide a lot of great inspiration! Thank you for making it!
these kinds of videos legit should be used for therapy, just so relaxing
To relax , buid a small one & ad 2 guppies or shrimp , better than television .
Yours was so beautiful and peaceful, it was on the top 3 even before I knew it was yours
yours is so cool! I loved the matte black sand, way different than what the other tanks had. :) all it needed was shrimp or a betta boi
3, 12, 21 and 29 were my favourites, and 3 of those finished in the top 6, so I guess I have the same taste as the judges :)
6:42 I'm sorry, but if that's one of the best nano aquascapes in america, america sure is slacking.
Haha yeah wtf
There's quite a few here that are lame.
Agreed, it sucks
It actually looks like a dick. The stones on the bottom are the testicles, than the dick and the skull is actually the dick head. Damn. This is childish as fuck
Yes. That was exactly what I was thinking. Thank you for saying it out loud. 😝🤫
17 has nice depth, 21 is also nice, 24 I like because of the colour choices grey and green and the rock type , 27 nice jungle cliff,
I picked 4 tanks that I thought were amazing. Three of them were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and my fourth one came in 5th place. Yours was my pick! For realsies. Loved the grey gravel choice and rock. Very pleasing.
You have an excellent narrative voice for your subject, and I like the pacing of your video work.
my 1st 2nd and 3rd choices actually came in 1st, 3rd and 2nd. Nice to see i have some sort of talent for the aesthetic.
wow.. many of the scape create lots of depth, really nice scape
and your tank is stunning too!
and also your video is superb! thanks for the videos, is great that those who cant attend aquatic experience like me get to enjoy the tank too
I’m glad you got a feel for it even though you couldn’t attend!
Before I got to the end and heard who won I’d already screenshotted yours as one of my faves
3 and 21 have so much depth, I can't tell where they end.
#8, 21, 25, 27. Are my top choices. Look great. I would think 21 or 8 are the winners.
My favourites (listing favourites first) are: 21, 27, 12, 9, 3.
great job alex. One correction- #15 is Ricky Chawla, as opposed to Rich. My favorite, for a few reasons, was number 17- Hock Ng.
Yours was one of my favorite tanks.
Well, feels good to see that I could've competed with some of these set ups
I chose yours, loved the planted plateau and the contrast of bare ground which is rare
I love the ones with built structures, and depth. Some people put a lot of thought and perspective into their art. Some of them look thrown together. They need to have a good balance of hardscape and greenery. I like to look at an aquascape, and see a path to an unknown land. 🐡🐠
I’m only on the third tank but it’s already one of my favorites The driftwood looks like a picture frame💯😎
Quite a few that were very interesting. Suprised how low many of them ranked. Nice video like always👍👍👍
I think No. 12, 16 and 29 are the best on the list. Great work to these guys :D
I really liked the one that made it to the 6ht place, but all of the winners are very beautiful!
I never had a nano.
All of them look fantastic!
Thank's for sharing. 👍🏻
The Aquatic Experience this year was awesome. I hung out with the RUclipsrs too bad I did not run into you. Cheers!

My favorites: 3, 12, 15, 17, 21 & 29. Seems like I picked pretty well! ^_^ Those were some lovely scapes.

WOW ,,,, not sure how anyone can choose from that group ,
Beautiful , any fish 🐟 🐟 would love them ALL 😎👍

Your videos are so nice. I like listening to them while I sleep
Oh my goodness I give up just can't choose😳
Would love to do something like this.
They all beautiful
I just loved how you format this video. Such lovely aquascaping. Sadly I'm not a good judge as only one of my faves got any top spot. They're #15, #17, #18 & #7. Props to Katherine Wright #22 for bringing Hayao Miyazaki to aquascaping!
#7 and #15 were my absolute favs ! Finally a comment which acknowledged these tanks ☺️
This might be a dumb question but how big are those nano tanks, gallon wise?
I love your tank I had to pause the video it’s so original and nice !
My favourite is #7. It's so simple, i love it.
Beautiful. Anyone know what size they are)
Absolutly the right winners, great scapes 👍

Well done on the competition and this wonderful video.
#8 and #21 are just out of this world ☺️☺️
#21 was my fav! And he won! Nice vid, TY
Thank you for introducing us to aquatic experience! We went and volunteered last week and had a fantastic time.
That's it, I'm stealing the winners idea, that tank was just too good
I liked your tank the best since i was planning on aquascaping. It gave me some ideas!
I was looking for an aquascape without driftwood. Driftwood just didn't sit right with me. And i would personally add more plants in the tank. I really like carpeting and floating plants.
This was fascinating. So much artistic inspiration in one video.
I think you are a great aquascaper. I also think it's wonderful that you did such an amazing job videoing all of these beautiful tanks.
