The 1939 Mercury "Jersey Devil" Runs On It's Own Gas Tank!!!

- The 1939 Mercury that we rescued from New Jersey this summer has been given a new nickname...The Jersey Devil. This Merc has been stubborn through every step of the process. The original engine was an absolute mess, the replacement engine carbs were fighting us, and now we need to replace the fuel system. The Mercury appears to have sat with a tank partially full of fuel, and the fuel line running under the car has quite a few pinholes. Once the old tank is dropped Steve and Matt work on pulling some leaves out of the rear spring pack to get the rear end sitting just right. After getting the tank and fuel lines replaced, we go the Merc running better then ever!!!

This car is in great shape, I just can't get over it. The new heart sounds good as well. Well done guys.
Kudos to Steve!!!!! Always is in a great mood, smiling, laughing, amazing attitude. A real asset to ITG.!!!!!! You be the man Steve!
He's a Mike Rowe disciple. He gets, and doesn't seem to mind, the Dirty Jobs. Way to go Steve!
Steve is the best!
Sparks and gas tank…fun! I’d like to see what this Merc will look like with the paint buffed out like the ‘34.
There is nothing that sounds like a modified flathead! That was the perfect engine choice for the “Jersey Devil”.
That choppy motor would sound schweet through a pair of Smitty's!
Smitty's are the only way!! I had a pair, don't remember what I did with them
Hope to see it all polished out soon, that paint shows so much potential!!
It will be great if he doesn't add some patina . JK : )
We installed an outside lift. Pressure washing / steaming new project cars makes the work a whole lot easier
Thomas has a excellent idea...outside lift for power washing
Watching Bellos Kustoms makes me want to chop everything 😂
What a beautiful car . I would keep the leaf springs you removed with the car . A future owner may want to put them back in . I like the way is sets now , & it will probably handle better too . Nice job , as usual , Guys !
Steve does great work. Much more getting done in ron trap garage.
Super cool car. I'm looking forward to seeing it all buffed out and shining.
Your lucky to have such good help ! Way to go Steve.
Really enjoy these videos.
Steve is awesome!
That Merc is really a nice looking car. You don't see many. Thanks for showing it. Amazing Ford stuck with those transverse springs for so long. They did work though. I never can believe the stress on those shackles, yet they rarely broke. You guys are fun to watch, and your buddy has a very sinister laugh! Watch him!
every good team/organization needs a guy like Steve..the guy who does the hard and dirty jobs that are indispensable..one of Matt's best moves was to bring him on..
Yep he’s the best!
Dig that Merc, it's in beautiful shape! ✌🏻🇺🇸
Morning Matt & Steve, as Matt was sweeping the floor, I thought you can't have progress with out a mess! Be safe, God Bless!!
Just curious, what did you use for a gas fuel sending unit? I've updated my '47 Lincoln with a '86 ford 460 and am changing to 12 volt but I can't find a 12 volt sending unit with the ford 6 hole pattern that is 12 volt. Any Ideas?? Thanks.... Wish I had my old '40 Merc convertible, I miss that car....
This is a pretty sweet ride.
Love to see it polished, and detailed
Ya got a good crew going with the addition Steve.
He seems to be a pretty cool dude and handy in the wiring department.
He's going to have that harness top shelf by the time he's finished with it.
Steve is a great asset to the ITG team!
Man that thing is BAD!, love the nickname jerse devil too, originally from nj
Matt. Hard to chose a favorite all your cars are awesome. But you definitely work your ass off to get them and keep your business going. Much respect my friend
Thanks so much! It ain’t work if we’re having fun and doing what we love! At least it doesn’t seem like it most days!
The ole flathead sounds great it puts a smile on my face
Letting a car down after removing springs or lowering in any way is so damned satisfying.
I have a 50 year old skidsteer. I was able to save the original gas tank (which had several iisues) by putting a medium size steel chain (12" long) in it and then rotlated it at a slow speed for about 30 minutes. It broke away all of the rust and general sluge so that it could simply be removed. I then flusded the inside and completely sealed the inside. That was 3 years ago and I have had no issues. Just my two-cents. Good luck!
Really good idea!
going to be a great cruiser 🙂
They got to sit right, hot rods it all about the stance.man I wish the guys who build stuff on u tube took notice of the above statement
So much work wasted by not standing back
And looking what your building!.
Yea man! They gotta sit right! It’s as important as anything else! A beautiful car that has a poor wheel and tire choice or stance can ruin the overall appearance of a car!
Matt, they make a gas tank coating that seals a tank against corrosion and introducing into the fuel system. Come to think of it it might also be good to coat a new tank to keep corrosion from starting in the first place.
God I love that car. That thing is gorgeous
that's a beautiful 😍 merc coops are the best 👌 good 👍 job 😀
LOWER... WEST COAST STYLE HOMIE!
Steve is a great addition to the shop. No job to tough for him. 💪👏👏👏
It’s going to be great. Just got the small details to finish. Thank you for sharing!
OMG that sounds so sweet! Lovely car guys, big kudos from BC by the sea :)
Personally I'd have kept the heavier suspension and not even try to lower it, why? Its a beauty car, made to carry a bit of a load I think, so I think I'd get it back up to level height then there'd be better room for the shot-guns/straight-pipes out the ass without having to worry about crushing them, on top of it being a class ride. Some nice 8" white-wall radials... but yeh, for every opinion theres an ass, sure i am one, but regardless, very nice ride and great work!
I’m liking that XL throttle spring. Nice car.
If it were me I'd replace the entire wiring harness in the car, I don't trust decades old wire.
Man, I love that body style. I hade a 41 chev business coupe for almost 25 years…next door neighbor offered me a big chunk of $ for it. Jeeze I regret that one. Oh well, now I just enjoy watching youse guys.
The chunks came from when your friend drilled out the gas cap Matt. I m sure lots of metal got into the filler neck and hose. Then you put it back together poured gas in it and washed all the filings out of the filler neck.
Uhhhh no. The old gas tank was out and we couldn’t get the neck off to replace the rubber hoses on it without removing the gas cap. We THEN blasted and cleaned the neck and replaced the hose on it. Then replaced the tank and then put the neck back on.
I just drool over that car. I'm a purist, but a slight lowering can look very nice. I'm so glad you kept the original wheels. A set of skirts and a visor on it would really give it that "bomb" look.
Matt
Those old gas tanks make great drip pans. When I cut the top off of my old 1953 Chevy gas tank I had a helicopter hovering over me, I guess to see if I was going to blow myself up.
Filled it with water first and when nothing happened they flew off. Were they disappointed? Jim
Nice Video. Hope to be watching for Sunday Service.

#PHILLYPHILLY 🇺🇸
Looks a lot better good job men
an angled pick or flat head stuck into the inner rim of the filler neck can depress the teeth of the gas cap so you can remove it........ learned this trick after having my locking gas cap removed by a thief
Very nice Merc. Great video, music is a bit annoying though.
Beautiful stance, how about a set of skirts, some lakes, and a set of flipper bar hub caps? All bolt on so now cryin from the judges!
Wishing my 46 was that solid. Sweet ride gents!!
The 39 is Bitchin'.
At 17:29, is that the Jersey Devil making an appearance in the fender reflection, or is that the Iron Trap Snake?
Or am I finally coming down from that sh@t I did in '78.
Good job y'all . And I am glad you got some help 😎
Moonshine Merc.
Nice fender coverers, your lucky a viewer donated them, I have one with a Pontiac logo that I stuffed back in my large toolbox, it's slatted for a display case.
I've used that eastwood encapsulator. Wear a respirator cauz that stuff makes you loopey.. Protect those lungs👍
Love that car. it really is classy !
3:19 how familiar is that sound? Keep up the fine vid's. Are two 'cherry bomb's in its future?
Howdy and hello,
I just got a comment about what I said of the Mercury rear axle leaf spring bundle. And to that I say this: That is fine about Iron Trap Garage having 19,000 subscribers and that is just fine. And I was informed about that this channel is not about restoring old cars and etc. However I was looking out for the welfare about the Mercury and that is very seldom that he come across a car that is such fine condition that even the interior is great or at least in very fine shape. But cars like this are getting to be very hard to find and since I used to repair vintage electronic equipment coming across a car in this fine shape is quite something. However, I was voicing a concern about the rear axle that he might of removed one too many leaves out of the spring bundle. And I am thinking about the future of this machine when it is sold off to someone else.
Also since he is a custom builder salvaging old wrecks when he come across them and gives them a new life as a custom car with modified engines. And I wish the best of luck to him and he likes what he is doing. And what he is doing reminds me of that Disney cartoon Susie the little blue coupe. She started as a fine car and when she was reduced to a broken down old heap a group of teens got together and really fixed her and did a fine job doing it. So that is what I have to say on that point. I like stock cars and I like hot rods when they are done well.
Think it looks great the way it sits now, I Myself would not go any lower and don't forget the PA Potholes you will be cruising over come spring.
Sorry, must make a statement. Leaking gas tank, Grinder and lots of sparks !! " Danger Will Robertson "
That car looks and sounds great. Steve is a good guy to have around. Good work guys.
Steve rules!
Its a shame you stuffed that old gas cap. You could probably of got a lical lock smith to cut a key for it. Ive done that with few early cars I've had that had no keys. Take a lock out or remove or give them a gas cap and they cut keys for me. Save cool old gear.
Get a power washer. Ry saves time blowing greasy crust and everything else off the bottom of a car that's not supposed to be there..
Sparks...what could possibly go wrong.
Really nice car and Steve is a great worker!
Wow.. the car is in great shape. Looking forward to seeing it finished. 👍
that ol flathead sounded like it was idling at bout 100rpms! Love it
Nice original Merc. It used to be a big deal to grease and wrap leaf springs, for a smooth ride.
Congratulations on building your hobby into a business. You have employees. A business equals profit. You need to make a list of cars to sell. You need to sell cars to make room for new projects.
I appreciate your business advise but I think we’re doing just fine.
That one would really pop with some rear fender skirts
I think they found a set in the trunk when they first got it. They are most likely waiting til after doing the brakes to put them on.
Got them in the trunk. Soon enough!
I want a ride in that this spring!!
Damn that merc looks cool and Steve’s a great addition to the iron trap team👍
Steve’s the best!
Great car! Nice to see the 39 Junkyard sedan in the driveway. Any thoughts of scuffing it up and throwing some satin black on it? Keep it low buck and use Rust-O-Leum!!
Nope leaving it as is. I’d rather patina than a half ass satin paint job. Just my preference. When we sell it the next owner can do anything they want!
That would look neat with some back skirts on it.
We have a set in the trunk waiting! Need to fix some dents and repaint them black to match!
I know I’m going to be roasted for this but man she would be a great kustom. I get it though that the car is so good as is just leaving her fairly stock is still super awesome. I would drive her with pride too, great job guys
We agree. This is just stage 1 of this car..
Am I the only one thinking about sparks near a leaking gas tank? 😬
It only had a small seep.
@@screwthecrewofpoliticians8921 Yeah, kinda like a pilot light.
@@frankschwartz7405 it takes oxygen, a fuel source and a spark. There wasn't enough liquid to burn, and therefore not enough vapor.
I worked in muffler shops all across America, well not in the northeast. But all across the south to AZ.
The seep wasn't a bother.
@@frankschwartz7405 did you know a bar of hand soap can stop a gas leak?
@@screwthecrewofpoliticians8921 A muffler shop?
I worked in a radiator shop where we repaired gas tanks. I've seen more than one of them blow up, even after spending the night in the hot tank. It made me nervous just punching a hole in them so they would drain.
Over time, I heard news reports of several guys getting killed by trying to repair a gas tank.
You should at least fill it with water or CO2.
Taildragger yes,⛄️
This is what I needed today.... Great video ty Steve
Saludos desde san francisco san luis Argentina
LOVE THE "MERC"
Do you do Dynamat to fight the sound and condensation on these ole cars
Looking good!!!!!!!!!!!
Looking great 👍 just don’t like the stance. For me it’s more comfortable higher up 🙏
Ghandi said to never fear being a minority of one. Now thanks to you, there are two of us heretics who refuse to worship at the altar of the low riders. I hate 'em, and I think it ruins a beautiful car to do that to it. I used to have a nice '59 Impala, and that was all I ever heard, "Slam it!!! Make it scrape the ground!!"
NO!!!!!!!!!!!
Matt. Not to be picky, but I have followed this car with the engine removal and install. All were without fender covers that I know you got in a box. See the comment below.
We got the fender covers after the new engine was installed… calm down it’ll all be ok we promise!
Let's see. Gas tank. Sparks. What could possibly go wrong?
Necessary evil in this situation.
Very cool Merc! Gonna be a fun summer cruiser.
Isn't the filter or screen missing from that fuel pump/filter? Not that some of that crap makes it into the carb. I have never seen one with just the glass bowl but my stuff is a couple decades newer.
Yep but still not something we want floating around in the bowl.
It's all about stance ...
Skirts, nah. It’s not a low rider
If your going to drive it don't screw around with the old gas tank and lines..headache avoided.
Isn’t there supposed to be a screen in that fuel bowl? And it my opinion it’s to low . Now it look like a low rider.
It’s a custom. They sit low.
Sounds good. A set of skirts would really give it the look .
Yep have a set in the trunk!
@@IronTrapGarage Really glad to hear that Matt!
That Merc sounds angry!
NO NO NO!!!
No sparks near a leaky gas tank!
I like the name Jersey Devil 👍👍
That is such a sweet little car. I love. it.
Great car. Needs to sit a bit higher...
So glad you are saving these gems!
Please stop lowering these cars and trucks. Let them stand tall and proud the way they were meant to !
Nope. Stock sucks.
I really like the 39 merc nice car some day I hope to own a Ford or Mercury with a flat head v 8. As a matter of fact I am shopping now and hope to find one as close to original as possible. Watch all the time you have quite a collection, I only have 7.
Man sounds great sitting nice to.
Such a killer car; love the look. Are you changing the gear oil in the rear end?
We will drain and refill fluids yes.
She’s a beauty all right, can’t believe you find the cars you do? It brilliant.
Low and slow !! Love it !!
