Taking The 1939 Ford Forgotten Hot Rod On It's First Test Drive!!!

- We have slowly been completing items on the punch list for the 1939 Ford Forgotten Hot Rod and the list is almost done. The last big thing we need is shocks. The car rocks like a boat when you get in and out of the car, and taking turns will probably look the same. Matt works on installing tube shocks in the front and rear. In the front of the car Matt chooses to use a set of bolt on adapters that bolt to the location of the old lever shock, and uses the shock link mount on the axle for the bottom shock mount. In the rear there is some fabrication that needs to be done to create mounts. After the shocks are installed Matt and Mike wrap up a few more loose ends and finally take the 39 for it's first ever street drive!!! This car has come a long way from the junkyard and we cant wait to finally take it for a spin!!

it would be kinda cool to be your neighbor just to see the parade of rare hot rods driving through the neighborhood as you test drive them. it would make my day, that's for sure.
When you drug that out of the swamp, I wasn't sure if it was worth saving. You did a great job on getting it this far.
Back in the 60’s, I had a green 1940 Ford 4-door. My friend and I swapped in a 1954 Ford flathead. So like you, when everything was ready, I took it for a ride around my little town. On the way home, I was stopped by the police and told to get it off the road because it didn’t have a license. Later, I found out that the steering was totally messed up down at the frame. When my mother saw me spending so much time on the car she got pretty upset because I was supposed to be finishing high school. She made me sell the car and I swore off old cars until I retired in 2002. Now I watch Iron Trap Garage faithfully and can relate to your challenges.
Not much changes over the years. Old cars are the same no matter the year or age’

Brought back memories of the first around-the-block test drive in my first car after working on it for months with almost no budget. - a 1956 Chevy I bought for $15.00 back in 1963. It was a real turd, but I was proud of it and I had a smile on my face a mile wide! Thanks, Matt & Mike.
My first car was a '56 Belair, but it wasn't in bad shape....still had the 265 with relatively low miles and was even more fun after I dropped the 428 HO motor in it. $15 then; think about today.

I was screaming "NO", when I saw you installing the rear shocks still banded with the suspension at full droop. The second version of the lower rear shock mounts look much beefier.

When you did the drive-by. That is the coolest sound I've ever heard coming out of a car. That exhaust is really tuned nicely. I'm down. Nice work. Don't change the sound of that exhaust 👍

It's a fantastic day! Such a monumental moment, to park it next to its fellow swamp companion! I've loved every episode of this build, growing up my dad had a pristine 39 Plymouth sedan I remember just staring at it in the garage for hours as a kid dreaming... loved the low cost approach with this car, thank you for all you efforts and time with everyone involved having a hand in rebuilding this time capsule you did great! Watching this at 1am in New Zealand so worth staying awake for!! God bless
When i lived inSouth Auckland i had a pretty rare car in NZ, a '39 Plymouth two door sedan which was pretty complete but being a 1st year apprentice I didn't have the bucks to fix it properly so i sold it to a guy in West Auckland. 50 years ago....

Man those old Y-Blocks have such a cool unique sound to them! My dad had a 54 F100 with a 292 Y-Block with the center dump headers as well, such a cool sound!

A lot of guys would have edited that mistake out and for you to stand in front of your followers and explain that you had a slight brain phase is admirable. Your level of knowledge and period dedication is remarkable, especially on this low budget save.
I think it’s important to show the mistakes as well! I’m learning myself and it happens to us all.
i was doing a restoration on a 39 standard two door ,had a stroke and had to give it up . seeing you do this 39 hotrod warmed my heart, to see it running wow

On my39 I used the panhard bar and antisway bar from a 46-48 V8 sedan. Just needed to drill a few holes and it was fitted up easily. I could use a softer front spring to get rid of annoying bounce on bumpy roads and it corned very nicely.

Hubcap wasn’t on. Needs replacement clips on the wheel so I left it off

1972 chevy truck front shocks are perfect for this, that's what I use.
I double checked. The right rear hubcap was missing when you left the shop. No worries!

I would clean in up just enough to be able to stop the rust from eating it up more seal it somehow to help that also ! Maybe change the seat covers ! Other than that leave it the way it is ! Good to see it going. It definitely put a smile on your face and mine too. Its good to see it doesn't have the Ford wallowy barge feel to it any more. When the carbs fixed check the pedal travel to make sure it gets to full throttle at the carb . The number of times i've heard "I've spent all this money and it doesn't go any faster" and they only have 2/3rds travel at the carb when the pedal hits the floor. Now you have a short list of things to fix.. Next stop Cali. Ya hoo. LOL

If you look when Matt backs it out just before he drives it around the block ,the hub cap was already missing so it didn't fall off, I think it only had three to start with .

Matt. I think you will be glad you went that route with the shocks, Pa. roads have been known to destroy all suspension parts and pot holes swallow compact cars as you know. LOL. Very cool to see the old girl running down the road, good times.

Skools in session. This is proof that you can take a vehicle out of a salvage yard and revive it to live again on a budget. You now participate and not view from the side lines. Still the ultimate in recycling in our throw away world. Work out the bugs and drive the wheels off of it. Let this be a rolling billboard of what you CAN do with some time and thought process. Not so bad Matt. I replaced head gasket on a 302 tighten everthing up then cranked it up. Smoke something terrible tore it all down again then realized that anti freeze was in the header pipes burning off. Put it all back together ran great after all the anti freeze gone. Lesson learned.

You didn't loose the hub cap on the test drive. It wasn't on when you lowered the car on the lift to test the shocks (14:00 in the video).
