- We have slowly been completing items on the punch list for the 1939 Ford Forgotten Hot Rod and the list is almost done. The last big thing we need is shocks. The car rocks like a boat when you get in and out of the car, and taking turns will probably look the same. Matt works on installing tube shocks in the front and rear. In the front of the car Matt chooses to use a set of bolt on adapters that bolt to the location of the old lever shock, and uses the shock link mount on the axle for the bottom shock mount. In the rear there is some fabrication that needs to be done to create mounts. After the shocks are installed Matt and Mike wrap up a few more loose ends and finally take the 39 for it's first ever street drive!!! This car has come a long way from the junkyard and we cant wait to finally take it for a spin!!

it would be kinda cool to be your neighbor just to see the parade of rare hot rods driving through the neighborhood as you test drive them. it would make my day, that's for sure.
When you drug that out of the swamp, I wasn't sure if it was worth saving. You did a great job on getting it this far.
Back in the 60’s, I had a green 1940 Ford 4-door. My friend and I swapped in a 1954 Ford flathead. So like you, when everything was ready, I took it for a ride around my little town. On the way home, I was stopped by the police and told to get it off the road because it didn’t have a license. Later, I found out that the steering was totally messed up down at the frame. When my mother saw me spending so much time on the car she got pretty upset because I was supposed to be finishing high school. She made me sell the car and I swore off old cars until I retired in 2002. Now I watch Iron Trap Garage faithfully and can relate to your challenges.
Not much changes over the years. Old cars are the same no matter the year or age’
I always said that if anyone has an employee that does not make mistakes, to fire them, as it means the employee is not doing anything. Besides, we learn best from errors. You are doing great. I have learned a lot from you. Thank you.
Brought back memories of the first around-the-block test drive in my first car after working on it for months with almost no budget. - a 1956 Chevy I bought for $15.00 back in 1963. It was a real turd, but I was proud of it and I had a smile on my face a mile wide! Thanks, Matt & Mike.
My first car was a '56 Belair, but it wasn't in bad shape....still had the 265 with relatively low miles and was even more fun after I dropped the 428 HO motor in it. $15 then; think about today.
Hey Matt & Mike, great video, mistakes do happen, we all make them. When you were driving the 39, you resembled a kid on his new bike, you can tell how much you enjoy this stuff!! Be safe & God Bless!!
The smiles on your guy’s faces says it all. Most excellent.
Absolutely.
I just bought stamps to mail you a check for the raffle. Damn it glad I didn't mail it. Makes me sad
Really cool 😎 great video
Exactly what I was thinking!! Great job guy's a project well done 🏆
I was screaming "NO", when I saw you installing the rear shocks still banded with the suspension at full droop. The second version of the lower rear shock mounts look much beefier.
I love the sound of the Y-block!
When you did the drive-by. That is the coolest sound I've ever heard coming out of a car. That exhaust is really tuned nicely. I'm down. Nice work. Don't change the sound of that exhaust 👍
Thanks Keith!
It's a fantastic day! Such a monumental moment, to park it next to its fellow swamp companion! I've loved every episode of this build, growing up my dad had a pristine 39 Plymouth sedan I remember just staring at it in the garage for hours as a kid dreaming... loved the low cost approach with this car, thank you for all you efforts and time with everyone involved having a hand in rebuilding this time capsule you did great! Watching this at 1am in New Zealand so worth staying awake for!! God bless
When i lived inSouth Auckland i had a pretty rare car in NZ, a '39 Plymouth two door sedan which was pretty complete but being a 1st year apprentice I didn't have the bucks to fix it properly so i sold it to a guy in West Auckland. 50 years ago....
I can remember pictures of when I was about 5yrears old standing next to the 39 ford we owned
That is hot rodding right there, taking a bunch of stuff and building a car, nothing like the kick of the first drive
Man I'd love to own the '39. Even though it's a budget build, it sure has come a long way since you drug it out of that junkyard/swamp.
Ooooh! That exhaust sounds REALLY good!
Love the rap of the pipes, and the concept on the shocks is perfect. Will definitely be stealing that concept for my 36
Man those old Y-Blocks have such a cool unique sound to them! My dad had a 54 F100 with a 292 Y-Block with the center dump headers as well, such a cool sound!
Cool, first drive! Now you can give your Dad's car some love too!!
So bad ass! The sound, stance, perfect!
Matt- sometimes we learn more from your failures than we do from your successes. Glad you show us both so please dont stop.
Thanks for watching!
You learn a lot more from failures than successes. I like the build, shows what anyone can do with a little thrifty shopping and ingenuity. It looks like you’re happier driving this than you were with the free T, cheap cars are a blast
That is so cool! I have been watching the progress on the project for a long time. Glad to see that it is now on the road.
You're honest to show when you make a mistake..something that happens to guys a lot but rarely shown.
The smile on you face says it all!!!!
HEY!!!!
GREAT JOB!!!
Thanks for watching!
I know I'm chiming in a bit late but I'm to busy to sit and watch a full episode so I watch in parts. Great build Matt! I had a really fun time watching. A few tiny leaks, hey, what the heck. The car sounds awesome!! Heh, gas shocks …Tea pot carbs are notorious for fires, be careful!
I love these budget builds. You should do more of them. A lot of is budget guys can relate to this
That’s the plan with the 47 for my dad!
A lot of guys would have edited that mistake out and for you to stand in front of your followers and explain that you had a slight brain phase is admirable. Your level of knowledge and period dedication is remarkable, especially on this low budget save.
I think it’s important to show the mistakes as well! I’m learning myself and it happens to us all.
i was doing a restoration on a 39 standard two door ,had a stroke and had to give it up . seeing you do this 39 hotrod warmed my heart, to see it running wow
Keepin' Hot Rods Sketchy !
That thing sounds Bad ASS !!
Thanks for the ride along, that was cool as hell !!
On my39 I used the panhard bar and antisway bar from a 46-48 V8 sedan. Just needed to drill a few holes and it was fitted up easily. I could use a softer front spring to get rid of annoying bounce on bumpy roads and it corned very nicely.
Hi Matt and Mike ! You guys rock , truly enjoyed this video . Successful people fail 85 % of the time , they are successful because they keep going . Your honesty is truly admirable, so happy to see the 39 in her glory . The neighbors comment, Priceless ! I got a huge laugh out of that !
Great job, it look good going down the road.
Thanks for going thru your shock update, it's like you are really listening to our comments. I laughed when you lost a hub cap, because my 47' Merc would throw hubcaps all the time.
Hubcap wasn’t on. Needs replacement clips on the wheel so I left it off
Thank you for leaving the mistakes in, that's how we learn 🤗
You keep it real man...you show the mistakes too...but you always fix them! When you finish a car...take us along for the first ride...we are as excited as you and Mike are!
Great job on this car. Really like how it turned out.
1972 chevy truck front shocks are perfect for this, that's what I use.
I double checked. The right rear hubcap was missing when you left the shop. No worries!
Matt it was great to see that 39 Ford forgotten hot rod finally get on the road that thing sounds awesome I love the exhaust and sound on it finally I got a chance to see it, I've been following it since the day you brought it home it was really awesome to see that car drive great job👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼... Jose'
Matt, Love your videos, especially the 39. When my husband and I married in 1981 I owned a 39 Dodge 4 door sedan (which I used to sell real estate) and he owned a 39 Chevy sedan delivery. You are bringing back so many great memories for us. Keep up the good work!
Oh that’s so awesome! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for the update on the 1939 Ford Forgotten Hot Rod ! It sounds awesome ! I sure would love to have that Hot Rod ! I would clean in up just enough to be able to stop the rust from eating it up more seal it somehow to help that also ! Maybe change the seat covers ! Other than that leave it the way it is ! Take care , stay safe and healthy with whatever you guys maybe doing next ! Doing well here .
Good to see it going. It definitely put a smile on your face and mine too. Its good to see it doesn't have the Ford wallowy barge feel to it any more. When the carbs fixed check the pedal travel to make sure it gets to full throttle at the carb . The number of times i've heard "I've spent all this money and it doesn't go any faster" and they only have 2/3rds travel at the carb when the pedal hits the floor. Now you have a short list of things to fix.. Next stop Cali. Ya hoo. LOL
First drive is best drive.
Happy for you Matt and Mike.
Super cool Matt !!!!! 👍👍👍👍
It looks awesome. Matt smiling makes me smile
You guys got to be proud . Well done, another survivor back on the road where they should be.
21.51 Look at that smile . He is one happy man.
From old hot rod, to junk yard swap creature, and finally back to being a hot rod. This has been an awesome series to watch thing transform back into a road worthy vehicle again.
Ah, please say you went back looking for that hubcap and found it! My ocd is kicking in!
If you look when Matt backs it out just before he drives it around the block ,the hub cap was already missing so it didn't fall off, I think it only had three to start with .
@@michaelhoward7652 No wonder he didn't seem worried about it. Thanks for the heads up!
Yep that wheel is missing the hubcap clips! I need to rivet a new set back on! Will do soon!
Awesome, glad to see it under its own power
Wouldn't mind knowing the price for the 39. If you want you can pm me
Matt. I think you will be glad you went that route with the shocks, Pa. roads have been known to destroy all suspension parts and pot holes swallow compact cars as you know. LOL. Very cool to see the old girl running down the road, good times.
Hey Matt, you got it right, just give the forgotten hot rod alot of love. Save your money for the 32's. Thanks for the video
FINALLY It lives. Such a nice thing to see . Thanks for sharing its maiden voyage
That is what it’s all about right here. Perfect video showing why we love old vehicles.
And this is how we learn. Laughing WITH you (on the shocks). I vote (that's) Mike's car !!!
Absolutely love it! It warms my heart to see this beautiful old car brought back to life. Your hours and hours of hard work and greatly appreciated! Love this channel.
Wow this is super cool. Every time I see your vids it makes me want to build a hot rod
So inspirational!!!!! I need to go back and watch the build-up of this hot rod. I missed many updates. I am so glad to see it driving around!!!! I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!!! Hot rodding is so much fun!!!! Great video and thanks for sharing!!!!
Skools in session. This is proof that you can take a vehicle out of a salvage yard and revive it to live again on a budget. You now participate and not view from the side lines. Still the ultimate in recycling in our throw away world. Work out the bugs and drive the wheels off of it. Let this be a rolling billboard of what you CAN do with some time and thought process. Nice job IronTrap!!!
Play safe.
Thanks for the kind words!
Rookie error on the shock mounting, ah just kidding. Nothing better than that first trip around the block. Looks great going down the road.
The 39 sounds great, it’s a nice little project. Thanks for sharing. Kevin
I think you should let Mike daily drive it and do a vlog about what’s it’s like. Having an old car with quirks is really about adapting to what you have. It would be incredibly interesting
Cheers guys enjoyed the build
Awesome Y-block rumble
It sounded sweet on the drive bye!!! Glad to see another one on the road again!!! Great job guys!!!
Nice work. I have followed from start to finish. Like other viewers, I wondered how it was going to turn out. It turned out awesome for what you wanted. I like when you make mistakes and we see it, unlike all the "professional shops" they never show a mistake in the final videos. Your channel is real life and I like it. Keep up the great stuff.
So cool! Another one saved from the junk yard. Awesome work!
Nice to see the forgotten hot rod on the road finally. I think it sounds awesome. Good job guys.
Not so bad Matt. I replaced head gasket on a 302 tighten everthing up then cranked it up. Smoke something terrible tore it all down again then realized that anti freeze was in the header pipes burning off. Put it all back together ran great after all the anti freeze gone. Lesson learned.
Haha that’ll happen to the best of us!
Hey Matt Congrats on your first drive the car sounded awesome. The smile on you guys tells it all . Well done 👍 Oh ya don't worry about the oops on the shock mounts we all make some mistakes.
So awesome to see this one back on the road. My favorite build so far !
Neighbor looks thrilled... "Dang whippersnapper tearing up and down street! I'm going to call the police you no good hoodlum!" Maybe if you take him for a ride now and then he might become your next best bud!
So cool to see this one back on the road, been following along since it was pulled from the swamp......that awesome dash fan looks lethal. LOL!
Great to see this one driving. Awesome job!
Really nice to see this one moving around. It's the last little things that always get ya.
Hey guys😃😃😃😃😃 this is to cool I’ll tell you😎 You guys saved that old girl . Really liked this video can’t wait for Tuesday’s. Ty Steve
That was fun...great work on the shock conversion X 2 😁
What a cool old car, epic
It's GREAT to see a project from start to finish!
Oops, that's ok happens to the best of us. You'll figure it out. I love that old car. As always great video.
First drives are the best! Really appreciate showing and admitting mistakes and how to fix it!
It was good to see you finally get to drive it around
Congrats on getting it out for a test drive! Looking good!
All smiles test drives are the best! Great sound coming out of those pipes.
You need to film your test drives in grainy black and white through an older part of town!
Excellent job guys 👍
This is a nice build. I'd love to see Mike get this car ; I think many others on here would agree !
I'm liking this car more and more.
We learn from our mistakes ..Thank You for showing us so we will not make the same mistake
Wow that would be a blast to take a road trip in!
First drives are such good fun....... some times. Thanks for the great content.
Looks great, keep having fun!
Love the 39! Nice to see you enjoying the car!
Awesome video I love the sound of that V8 rumbling along. That least you have great weather to do a short drive.
You didn't loose the hub cap on the test drive. It wasn't on when you lowered the car on the lift to test the shocks (14:00 in the video).
Well spotted Derrill. I wonder if they drove round looking for it.
The sweet smell of success!!!great job Matt as usual!!!!
Nice work! I have a '39 Fordor myself, love these cars!
Man we've been waiting for this moment! Awesome
It has been great watching that 39 come from the swamp to back on the road, good job guys.
Fun video. Glad to see you're "almost there" with this one. Of course, are they EVER complete? :)
My car is NEVER done.
So true! They’re never fully done but this one is close to as far as I’m taking it! Haha
@@IronTrapGarage Cars that look a little rough on the outside but are solid under the "skin" are far more appealing to me than a restored car. I think the public likes 'em better too.
Great to see this finished, I would love to daily drive it!
Love this build! Nice to see it on the road.
