That drop goal for Ireland against the French was at the end of a passage of play involving 41 phases making the score the final action of the game. It was a massive pressure kick even without the immense distance. It was the first match of the tournament for both teams and Ireland went on to beat every other nation that year, winning the grand slam.
Yes. Sexton's drop goal at 3:20 in this video is a great example of that sort of score. But the huge significance of winning an international against France after an immense run of play in extra time with a kick like that is lost when shown out of context. I guess the American Coach wasn't to know that.
Yep! French fan here and i just can not disagree. The context is huge. This drop goal is huge in itself (even for Sexton) but the context makes it legendary. Last minute winning drop goals are our "Hail Mary". Look for any of them and you would know that the entire game is worth watching.

The pure beauty of Jonah Lomu was his immense strength, size and speed. So much so that he pulled 3 or 4 men out of position to TRY to stop him. And that of course left holes in the opposition defence, which was exploited. Great choice!
Two halves of 40 minutes. The forwards stay with the ball non-stop.The fitness levels are incredible. Especially the Japanese team. They finish the game, running as hard as when they start.
1. Could be said for pretty much every single collective game... In any sport, even the best player who score a lot of point will still need a team around him to defend, to give him the ball, to open space, etc... 2. Wrong: Lomu piercing the french defense with 4 players attached to him to go for a try is the same as Messi dribbling 5 players to score a goal or Manning throwing an "Ave Maria" for touchdown in overtimes. Single player action in each case which can make you win a game.
You could literally kick it the whole length of the field. BUT…opposition could pickup and counter attack. It depends on many variables how successful you’ll be.
Ball can go forward off any part of the body except the hands and arms up to bicep level. So can be headed or chested forwards providing a teammate isn’t in front of you at the point of contact and they gather the ball

I go back a bit. Rugby has always been a fabulous game that was as exciting to watch in the 60's and 70's as it is now. The Welsh team of 1971, and '76 and the Lions team 1971 (consisting of many Welsh players) played some of the most exciting, watchable rugby ever!!

Just to explain the passes a little, I'd recommend you buying a rugby ball and practice passing with it. Every time you catch it, you have to reset your arm and hand positions in order to create a single motion that ends with a follow through and momentum. So the very quick change directions and no armswing passes are very impressive because they have to just use their wrist mostly. Not to mention the ball is so big that how you spin the ball effects its trajectory as well ( a bit more than an NFL ball). So the huge long passes is impressive because it flies up at a different angle than it comes down perfectly. So the work from the arms, wrist, and follow through you can't see is what everyone is impressed about. (The ball has to projectile up over defenders depending on the distance between defender and ball thrower, but than also has to come down at an angle depending on the receiver and his defender, all the while running as fast as you can). I can't explain how hard this is. As for the offloads (when they pass while getting tackled) this is hard because not only is your moment changed, (which changes your support (team mates) relative speed, but your arms are usually restricted at this point, so you can't do the swinging arm motion and have to rely on your wrists, and the available angles which the defenders have twisted you, and then blindly guess your supporting team mate's position and speed, not to mention the other defenders ready to intercept. So yea, a lot more is happening than it seems. @coach, I hope this comment finds you. :) If you want to see more I'd recommend reacting to some Fiji offloading videos, they make it look too easy. Probably not the best videos to watch since it does in fact make offloading look too easy ha ha ha. Also I recommend watching full games of 7s rugby, any Fiji vs New Zealand in a final will do to start. Its only 15 minutes long and is fast paced and has all the skills you want to watch but where the tide can turn in a matter of seconds. So even with 30 seconds on the clock you still don[t know who is winning. Very exciting.
Sevens rugby is probably a good quick easy start to watch a full match, they are abbreviated versions of the original, two seven minute halves with one minute break, seven players per side, full size field, it's fast wide and expansive.

Any forward kicking is legal, whether the ball travels one foot or 100 yards, whether it bounces or not, the ball is legal to play by either team. A pass, has to move backwards at all times, if not 'forward pass' could result in a penalty, the only exception is if I throw the ball forward and catch the ball myself, without the ball hitting the ground.

Upon marking a ball over the top of an opposition maul an Accidental Aerial Offside will be called.(part c.i ) excetion : the player is able to return the ball to the attacking team through his legs while upside down and thinks he is a League Player.
No way ! If you release the ball forward and catch it yourself it's still a forward pass ! Even temporarily losing control (fumbling) of the ball while you are running forward is considered a forward pass ! You may however forward pass with your hand to kick the ball.. but now, you cannot score a drop goal if the ball doesn't hit the ground first ! (Rugby union is weird !)

A great game to watch in full is France vs Wales from this year’s Six Nations. The best live matches coming up soon are from the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa. The best players from each of the four nations go from being fierce opponents to being teammates. The MLR is Union, and the US is good at 7s, which is a 7-a-side version of Union. League is the most popular form in most of Australia and Northern England, but Union is much bigger globally.

7:20 he isn't so much kicking the ball forward, as keeping the ball within the scrum. As long as the scrum is live, the other team aren't allowed to break up, and if they do, they concede a penalty. A powerful way to get one over the other team.
I really love the free running skills and movement all over the field found in the faster game of Rugby League - NRL. Fast and intelligent plays. Speed, strength and skill in all areas. Rugby Union is so different with those big beefy guys piling on top of the ball and one another, the scrums and moving mauls are fun to watch. There are strict rules for safety and these guys have a "duty of care" to one another as well because they are not padded and helmeted. Thanks for the video and comments.
In League, the scrum is just a way of restarting the game. In union, it is often used as a platform to launch attacks, win penalties or disrupt your opponents first phase attacking options. Watch the 2019 World Cup final to see how devastating a dominant scrum can be.

I played Rugby Union in my youth and I love watching a good contest anytime. My absolute favorite match was one between Japan and South Africa where Japan were the definitive underdogs, up against one of the top three teams in the world. It was during a world cup competition a few years ago. I won’t spoil it by telling you the final score, but I will say that the Sth African fans were cheering the Japanese team, which is a mark of how special this game was.

50 years ago I got fascinated with rugby. My mom had to take me three times a week across the "border" to France for training and playing. My enthusiasm lasted for 6 years before I discovered the other sex and later started playing handball at the age of 18 and finally made it to the third division in Germany. In the 19-Nineties I played amateur rugby in the UK and in the 2007 +++ in Malaysia. Both sports are great. I hope you can review some handball matches as well.
The Six Nations championship is held annually between England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, and Italy! They give a very good idea of the way Rugby Union is played in the northern hemisphere! It is normally held on the first few weekends of the year and they are all televised normally on BBC or ITV in the UK! They are extremely competitive with national pride at stake!
If you want a true classic to watch fully then you should watch South Africa vs All blacks at Ellis park in 2013, probably one of the best matches ever played. Springboks vs New Zealand is a great place to start in terms of watching what can be done on the rugby field. Its a master class in kicking, tackling, passing and running. S/O to the All Blacks for always keeping the Springboks on their toes!

I'd suggest you stick with Union - at least stick with just one. Trying to learn two quite different games the same time....nah. No offence meant, but you see why the rest of the World prefers rugby to American football? Choreographed "plays" are almost unheard of. It's 80 mins of non-stop inspired improvisational real teamwork. Brilliant sport!
back lines have rehearsed moves and forwards rehearse lineouts bro so I don't think choreographed plays are actually unheard of in Union. However I do understand that most of the exciting parts of the game are created through improvisation.

Copying this from a post I made about the sport on another American's channel: Rugby Union Football (usually just called Rugby or Union) is a descendant of Association Football (Soccer became a word as people simplified Association). Rugby League Football (usually just called League although people in League's heartland in North England might call it Rugby) is a descendant of Rugby Union, as is American Football. The biggest difference between the 3 oval ball versions is what happens when the player is tackled or forward momentum is stopped. In Union the player can make one movement usually to release or place the ball in the most advantageous position for his teammates who, coming from their side of the ball, and being on their feet can play at the ball (pick it up) or clear the area of opposing players. The opposition team can do the exact same thing to try and obtain the ball for their side. The person who was tackled must release the ball and anyone on the ground must not play at the ball or obstruct players (this includes tackler, tackled and anyone else who falls to the ground). Sound complicated right? In League when someone is tackled or has their momentum stopped the person who was tackled must stand up, place the ball on the ground at the location they were tackled and roll it behind them with their foot. There is usually someone behind them to pick up the ball called the dummy half. It's usually the Hooker or Halfback but can be any player on that team (which is why it's called the dummy half). The opposing team all need to retire back 10 metres except for up to 2 players who can line up opposite the spot of the tackle (in an I formation) in order to mark the position of the tackle. These players can move once the ball is played back, including going for the ball in some situations. The team possessing the ball has 6 tackles with which to score which is why you will usually seem them kick downfield after 5 tackles just like a punt in American Football. In Union a team keeps possession until they score, the other team steals it off them (often by pushing the possessing team off the tackled player and securing it for themselves), or a penalty against them is called. This is also why play can continue after the halftime or full time whistle has gone, until they score, lose it or that penalty is called
Sorry but whilst you might beleive the webb ellis nonsense, it is absolutely that! Handling a ball or object and carrying it from one side of a pitch to the other to score, or indeed from one side of a village to the other has been around for thousands of years. look up harpastum. Webb Ellis theory is basically complete lies, his contemporaries are documented to state that this was bollocks. There were many differing rules in the mid 1800s before 'socca' rules were brought about, some included handling the ball, taking a lead from village games that had rucks and scrums taking a ball/object from one side of a village to another and as I mentioned Harpastum.
Rugby football came into being the same time association football did. It's not a descendant of soccer, rather they were two different ways to play the existing game known as football which were separately enshrined.
At about 4:07 you asked about the kicks forward "in League" and "in Union". In both codes the ball can be kicked forward. The effect is that a player not in possession of the ball cannot be tackled or impeded. That way the kicker can get "a free pass" toward the try line if they are skilled enough to re-collect the ball on the other side of the play. The only proviso is that the ball can only be collected by a player who kicked it or a player who began from an "on-side" position, i.e. behind the kicker. You will see vids of play kicks where one player kicks an open field punt and either themselves or others will collect and go on to score a try. However, the off-side rule of "from behind the kicker" always applies. Same both codes. The Irish thing at 3.20 explains the other side of kicking forward. Points can only be scored from any kick, i.e. either of open play or try conversion if the ball is kicked from the ground. Specifically not an open field punt kick. In the Irish situation the ball was bounced forward to hit the ground in open play and kicked for goal from that point. In common speech it's a "Drop Goal". Again same rule both codes of Union and League. May I suggest that you note the comment from Mr. Connolly below. It is a truly salient point to make that 41 phases brought this about. To control the play for 41 phases is a truly remarkable feat.

I’d recommend focusing on one version of the game. Union or league. The differences can be confusing, especially for a newcomer to the game. Union is the bigger sport worldwide. League is exciting too and some great skills and big hits, but union has much more international profile.

If you can get to see the game between New Zealand v The Barbarians (during NZ tour of Britain, Ireland, France & Canada), in 1972/1973 it will be worth your while. It is generally considered to contain “the worlds greatest ever try” by Garth Edwards. The game is even more remarkable, when you understand that the Barbarians are a scratch team made up of players from different countries who do not normally play together and are invited to play a one-off game, with little or no time to train together. I was a young man of just 16 when I saw this game and it has lived with me ever since. I truly hope you get the opportunity to watch it all through. Regards.
LMAO. If you like 2nd Tier rugby, sure. Just watch any Super Rugby Aotearoa match. We play higher level rugby in our local competition than international teams.
As a coach you may be interested in what is known as a "Slip Catching Cradle". It is designed for cricket balls, but tennis balls can be used, and it is used to help develop reflexes, as a ball thrown onto it will bounce off at random and unexpected angles. Although it is primarily for developing fielding skills, it can also help players to react to opponents side stepping them. We used to put 3 players at each end with the simple instruction that the ball couldn't get past all 3 of them.
I would recommend getting familiar with the ruck and maul rules as they are the most complex (and integral) part of rugby union. Also for entertainment, any highlights of super Rugby!
I agree that you should pick one and try and learn those rules then learn the other. If you choose union, once you’ve learned some of the rules I would highly recommend Squidge Rugby’s YT channel for really great analysis of tactics of games. He’ll no doubt cover the upcoming Lions tour in South Africa so you could watch those games then watch his analysis and it changes what you’ve just seen because: insight!

There are 3 Codes (forms) of Rugby: RUGBY UNION (15 aside) RUGBY LEAGUE (13 aside) RUGBY 7's (7 aside, UNION rules) LEAGUE is faster pace of Rugby to UNION.. Technically, Rugby Sevens is a version of Rugby Union (the laws are the same except when the scope of the game requires something different) AND there's also that in-between version called Rugby Tens (which I believe is more popular in Asia.) My team played 10's once when the opposing team didn't have enough players for 15's.
Its definitely a high intensity game running constantly for 40mins either side of the game, I played it at school for 2 seasons got a cleat in my knee while I was at the bottom of a ruck took me out of my netball season for the year and got a pretty scar and ache just to remind me. You gotta watch it live and watch the handling skills of these rugby players and Ill tell you they have some pretty cool side steps.
One of the best games of all time was Bristol Bears v Harlequins last year (2021) for the semi-final of the Premiership. Some unbelievable skills from both teams.
That wasn't the best game in the tournament, that was Eng v NZ, the final was a let down because England folded quite badly, SA played great but it was very one sided in reality.

Nice video man. One thing that's great about Rugby Union is the build up to scoring the try. The highlights reels are good, but the real satuisfaction comes from when a team recycles the ball through 10, 15, 20 'phases of play' (running, getting tackled, forming a ruck, getting the ball back and going again) and eventually score through continuous pressure on the opposition. From Terry. Look for U tube (Jonah Lomu's 15 unforgettable Rugby World Cup tries) and wait for his try against England from the 1 minute mark. He played for Wesley Collage as a teen and I watched him play against Papakura High School as a 14 year old. I was standing on the sidelines with an audience of maybe 60 parents and friends and saw the power of this enormous young man playing against 17 year olds and running rings around them. He was unstoppable.

When you wonder whether American rugby is 'more like the union or more like the league' it seems like you haven't quite got what union and league mean. They're not competitions, they're two different codes codes of football (specifically rugby football) - they're two separate games. There isn't a separate American rugby competition with its own peculiar rules - there is USA Rugby, which governs rugby union in the States, and USA Rugby League, which is the body that governs rugby league. I believe that Rugby Union is the most popular rugby code in the United States
Americans are better off with Union as it differs more from their own football. As the old adage goes, American Football is Rugby League in pyjamas and armour.

A kick after a try is called a conversion. A kick towards goal during general play is called a drop kick in which the ball has to make contact with the ground before the foot.
Never really thought of it that way. I always went on Union and League being 40 minutes each half, 10 minutes halftime break, total time taken One and a half hours. American football, 15 minutes each quarter, 1 hour total playing time, average length of each game 3 hours. Thats twice as long for a game that is only 75% of the duration.

Well, if you want to watch _actual_ Rugby Union and not Soccer with an oval ball, then go with southern-hemisphere games, except the last few years in the UK (England, Wales, and Scotland have all had NZ and Australian Coaches and it's improved the spectatorship aspect of the game no end).

Extremely quick and nimble guy, brilliant side stepper, no look behind the back passes etc. He's in here a few times 2:26 he's the one controlling the ball with his foot. Rugby Union definitely better, should watch international games. New Zealand is world number 1 but at that international level there are awesome games/plays from NZ, Australia, South Africa, France, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, England etc.

That drop goal for Ireland against the French was at the end of a passage of play involving 41 phases making the score the final action of the game. It was a massive pressure kick even without the immense distance. It was the first match of the tournament for both teams and Ireland went on to beat every other nation that year, winning the grand slam.
Yes. Sexton's drop goal at 3:20 in this video is a great example of that sort of score. But the huge significance of winning an international against France after an immense run of play in extra time with a kick like that is lost when shown out of context. I guess the American Coach wasn't to know that.

Just to explain the passes a little, I'd recommend you buying a rugby ball and practice passing with it. Every time you catch it, you have to reset your arm and hand positions in order to create a single motion that ends with a follow through and momentum. So the very quick change directions and no armswing passes are very impressive because they have to just use their wrist mostly. Not to mention the ball is so big that how you spin the ball effects its trajectory as well ( a bit more than an NFL ball). So the huge long passes is impressive because it flies up at a different angle than it comes down perfectly. So the work from the arms, wrist, and follow through you can't see is what everyone is impressed about. (The ball has to projectile up over defenders depending on the distance between defender and ball thrower, but than also has to come down at an angle depending on the receiver and his defender, all the while running as fast as you can). I can't explain how hard this is.
As for the offloads (when they pass while getting tackled) this is hard because not only is your moment changed, (which changes your support (team mates) relative speed, but your arms are usually restricted at this point, so you can't do the swinging arm motion and have to rely on your wrists, and the available angles which the defenders have twisted you, and then blindly guess your supporting team mate's position and speed, not to mention the other defenders ready to intercept. So yea, a lot more is happening than it seems.
@coach, I hope this comment finds you. :) If you want to see more I'd recommend reacting to some Fiji offloading videos, they make it look too easy. Probably not the best videos to watch since it does in fact make offloading look too easy ha ha ha. Also I recommend watching full games of 7s rugby, any Fiji vs New Zealand in a final will do to start. Its only 15 minutes long and is fast paced and has all the skills you want to watch but where the tide can turn in a matter of seconds. So even with 30 seconds on the clock you still don[t know who is winning. Very exciting.
Sevens rugby is probably a good quick easy start to watch a full match, they are abbreviated versions of the original, two seven minute halves with one minute break, seven players per side, full size field, it's fast wide and expansive.
The Olympic Sevens has been a great introduction to that branch of the sport, and that first gold for Fiji was just emotional.
America now has Major League Rugby... been going on for about four years. For 2022, there are 13 teams including my Seattle Seawolves and they have won the championship twice.
Any forward kicking is legal, whether the ball travels one foot or 100 yards, whether it bounces or not, the ball is legal to play by either team. A pass, has to move backwards at all times, if not 'forward pass' could result in a penalty, the only exception is if I throw the ball forward and catch the ball myself, without the ball hitting the ground.

No way ! If you release the ball forward and catch it yourself it's still a forward pass ! Even temporarily losing control (fumbling) of the ball while you are running forward is considered a forward pass ! You may however forward pass with your hand to kick the ball.. but now, you cannot score a drop goal if the ball doesn't hit the ground first ! (Rugby union is weird !)

I played Rugby Union in my youth and I love watching a good contest anytime.
My absolute favorite match was one between Japan and South Africa where Japan were the definitive underdogs, up against one of the top three teams in the world. It was during a world cup competition a few years ago.
I won’t spoil it by telling you the final score, but I will say that the Sth African fans were cheering the Japanese team, which is a mark of how special this game was.

What makes this game difficult is that you can only tackle the man with the ball, which leaves the other players to constantly reposition themselves creating this amazing opportunities within the game that is mostly unrehearst. 50 years ago I got fascinated with rugby. My mom had to take me three times a week across the "border" to France for training and playing.
My enthusiasm lasted for 6 years before I discovered the other sex and later started playing handball at the age of 18 and finally made it to the third division in Germany.
In the 19-Nineties I played amateur rugby in the UK and in the 2007 +++ in Malaysia.
Both sports are great. I hope you can review some handball matches as well.
The Six Nations championship is held annually between England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, and Italy! They give a very good idea of the way Rugby Union is played in the northern hemisphere! It is normally held on the first few weekends of the year and they are all televised normally on BBC or ITV in the UK! They are extremely competitive with national pride at stake!

I'd suggest you stick with Union - at least stick with just one. Trying to learn two quite different games the same time....nah. No offence meant, but you see why the rest of the World prefers rugby to American football? Choreographed "plays" are almost unheard of. It's 80 mins of non-stop inspired improvisational real teamwork. Brilliant sport!
back lines have rehearsed moves and forwards rehearse lineouts bro so I don't think choreographed plays are actually unheard of in Union. However I do understand that most of the exciting parts of the game are created through improvisation.

Its called Set Piece, and its used after every offensive lineout and scrum that is won. It leads to some of the best rugby tries you'll ever see.

Rugby Union Football (usually just called Rugby or Union) is a descendant of Association Football (Soccer became a word as people simplified Association).
Rugby League Football (usually just called League although people in League's heartland in North England might call it Rugby) is a descendant of Rugby Union, as is American Football.
The biggest difference between the 3 oval ball versions is what happens when the player is tackled or forward momentum is stopped. In Union the player can make one movement usually to release or place the ball in the most advantageous position for his teammates who, coming from their side of the ball, and being on their feet can play at the ball (pick it up) or clear the area of opposing players. The opposition team can do the exact same thing to try and obtain the ball for their side. The person who was tackled must release the ball and anyone on the ground must not play at the ball or obstruct players (this includes tackler, tackled and anyone else who falls to the ground). Sound complicated right?
In League when someone is tackled or has their momentum stopped the person who was tackled must stand up, place the ball on the ground at the location they were tackled and roll it behind them with their foot. There is usually someone behind them to pick up the ball called the dummy half. It's usually the Hooker or Halfback but can be any player on that team (which is why it's called the dummy half). The opposing team all need to retire back 10 metres except for up to 2 players who can line up opposite the spot of the tackle (in an I formation) in order to mark the position of the tackle. These players can move once the ball is played back, including going for the ball in some situations. The team possessing the ball has 6 tackles with which to score which is why you will usually seem them kick downfield after 5 tackles just like a punt in American Football. In Union a team keeps possession until they score, the other team steals it off them (often by pushing the possessing team off the tackled player and securing it for themselves), or a penalty against them is called. This is also why play can continue after the halftime or full time whistle has gone, until they score, lose it or that penalty is called
Sorry but whilst you might beleive the webb ellis nonsense, it is absolutely that! Handling a ball or object and carrying it from one side of a pitch to the other to score, or indeed from one side of a village to the other has been around for thousands of years. look up harpastum.
Webb Ellis theory is basically complete lies, his contemporaries are documented to state that this was bollocks. There were many differing rules in the mid 1800s before 'socca' rules were brought about, some included handling the ball, taking a lead from village games that had rucks and scrums taking a ball/object from one side of a village to another and as I mentioned Harpastum.
Rugby football came into being the same time association football did. It's not a descendant of soccer, rather they were two different ways to play the existing game known as football which were separately enshrined.
At about 4:07 you asked about the kicks forward "in League" and "in Union". In both codes the ball can be kicked forward. The effect is that a player not in possession of the ball cannot be tackled or impeded. That way the kicker can get "a free pass" toward the try line if they are skilled enough to re-collect the ball on the other side of the play. The only proviso is that the ball can only be collected by a player who kicked it or a player who began from an "on-side" position, i.e. behind the kicker. You will see vids of play kicks where one player kicks an open field punt and either themselves or others will collect and go on to score a try. However, the off-side rule of "from behind the kicker" always applies. Same both codes.
The Irish thing at 3.20 explains the other side of kicking forward. Points can only be scored from any kick, i.e. either of open play or try conversion if the ball is kicked from the ground. Specifically not an open field punt kick. In the Irish situation the ball was bounced forward to hit the ground in open play and kicked for goal from that point. In common speech it's a "Drop Goal". Again same rule both codes of Union and League.
May I suggest that you note the comment from Mr. Connolly below. It is a truly salient point to make that 41 phases brought this about. To control the play for 41 phases is a truly remarkable feat.

I’d recommend focusing on one version of the game. Union or league. The differences can be confusing, especially for a newcomer to the game. Union is the bigger sport worldwide. League is exciting too and some great skills and big hits, but union has much more international profile.

If you can get to see the game between New Zealand v The Barbarians (during NZ tour of Britain, Ireland, France & Canada), in 1972/1973 it will be worth your while. It is generally considered to contain “the worlds greatest ever try” by Garth Edwards.
The game is even more remarkable, when you understand that the Barbarians are a scratch team made up of players from different countries who do not normally play together and are invited to play a one-off game, with little or no time to train together.
I was a young man of just 16 when I saw this game and it has lived with me ever since.

As a coach you may be interested in what is known as a "Slip Catching Cradle". It is designed for cricket balls, but tennis balls can be used, and it is used to help develop reflexes, as a ball thrown onto it will bounce off at random and unexpected angles. Although it is primarily for developing fielding skills, it can also help players to react to opponents side stepping them. We used to put 3 players at each end with the simple instruction that the ball couldn't get past all 3 of them.

If you choose union, once you’ve learned some of the rules I would highly recommend Squidge Rugby’s YT channel for really great analysis of tactics of games. He’ll no doubt cover the upcoming Lions tour in South Africa so you could watch those games then watch his analysis and it changes what you’ve just seen because: insight!

There are 3 Codes (forms) of Rugby:
RUGBY UNION (15 aside)
RUGBY LEAGUE (13 aside)
RUGBY 7's (7 aside, UNION rules)
LEAGUE is faster pace of Rugby to UNION.. UNION is more of a phase by phase, grind style or rugby with 40min halves.. my first love is League, but Union is my passion..

Technically, Rugby Sevens is a version of Rugby Union (the laws are the same except when the scope of the game requires something different) AND there's also that in-between version called Rugby Tens (which I believe is more popular in Asia.) My team played 10's once when the opposing team didn't have enough players for 15's.
Its definitely a high intensity game running constantly for 40mins either side of the game, I played it at school for 2 seasons got a cleat in my knee while I was at the bottom of a ruck took me out of my netball season for the year and got a pretty scar and ache just to remind me. You gotta watch it live and watch the handling skills of these rugby players and Ill tell you they have some pretty cool side steps.

One of the best games of all time was Bristol Bears v Harlequins last year (2021) for the semi-final of the Premiership. Some unbelievable skills from both teams.

That wasn't the best game in the tournament, that was Eng v NZ, the final was a let down because England folded quite badly, SA played great but it was very one sided in reality.

Nice video man. One thing that's great about Rugby Union is the build up to scoring the try. The highlights reels are good, but the real satuisfaction comes from when a team recycles the ball through 10, 15, 20 'phases of play' (running, getting tackled, forming a ruck, getting the ball back and going again) and eventually score through continuous pressure on the opposition. From Terry. Look for U tube (Jonah Lomu's 15 unforgettable Rugby World Cup tries) and wait for his try against England from the 1 minute mark. He played for Wesley Collage as a teen and I watched him play against Papakura High School as a 14 year old. I was standing on the sidelines with an audience of maybe 60 parents and friends and saw the power of this enormous young man playing against 17 year olds and running rings around them. He was unstoppable.

Springbok vs England was a good game but its very scrum heavy as the boks like to play. A good game would probably be the england vs all black semi final
Watch the final game between South Africa and New Zealand of the 2021 Rugby Championship. The number 1 & 2 ranked sides with two contrasting styles of play, with the leader constantly changing down to last minute. One the best games I've ever seen.

It's a 3 game competition between the State's of New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. The game is in 2 weeks time. When you wonder whether American rugby is 'more like the union or more like the league' it seems like you haven't quite got what union and league mean. They're not competitions, they're two different codes codes of football (specifically rugby football) - they're two separate games. There isn't a separate American rugby competition with its own peculiar rules - there is USA Rugby, which governs rugby union in the States, and USA Rugby League, which is the body that governs rugby league.
I believe that Rugby Union is the most popular rugby code in the United States
Americans are better off with Union as it differs more from their own football. As the old adage goes, American Football is Rugby League in pyjamas and armour.

With regards to kicking, you can kick it an inch or 100 metres, there’s more technicality to it, but the main thing is that your teammate must start behind your kicking position in order to be able to contest/play for the ball

A kick after a try is called a conversion. A kick towards goal during general play is called a drop kick in which the ball has to make contact with the ground before the foot.
One reason rugby is better...Average time of ball in play: Rugby League ≈ 62 minutes Rugby Union ≈ 35 minutes NFL ≈ 11 minutes.

Never really thought of it that way. I always went on Union and League being 40 minutes each half, 10 minutes halftime break, total time taken One and a half hours. American football, 15 minutes each quarter, 1 hour total playing time, average length of each game 3 hours. Thats twice as long for a game that is only 75% of the duration.

I would stick with Rugby Union . You should watch the 6 Nations tournament ( Scotland, Wales , Ireland , England , France and Italy ) Even casual rugby fans get excited about this annual tournament. You can also support 2 teams , Scotland and whoever England are playing 😜🏴
Well, if you want to watch _actual_ Rugby Union and not Soccer with an oval ball, then go with southern-hemisphere games, except the last few years in the UK (England, Wales, and Scotland have all had NZ and Australian Coaches and it's improved the spectatorship aspect of the game no end).

@6:30 O'Driscoll passed to himself, hard to tell with that older footage of course but he was notorious for his skills, with both his hands and feet! Extremely quick and nimble guy, brilliant side stepper, no look behind the back passes etc. He's in here a few times 2:26 he's the one controlling the ball with his foot. Bumped into him recently, sound guy good few compilation videos just on him!
Rugby Union definitely better, should watch international games. New Zealand is world number 1 but at that international level there are awesome games/plays from NZ, Australia, South Africa, France, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, England etc.
