The formation you asked about at around the 4:45 mark is known as a scrum. This is performed by the forward pack who are always quite a bit heavier than the backline. The forward pack or simply forwards, are in the South African context human wrecking balls who now in the modern game are also fast. It is not uncommon for pack weights to tickle the one tonne mark typically coming in at around 870 to 990kg's in top flight rugby. There are 8 per team arranged in a 3/4/1 formation. The scrum is part of structured play known as setpieces. What you see around the 7:55 mark is known as a ruck(ball on the ground) or maul(ball not on the ground, ie ball is held by a player and another or others are contesting possession) and this is part of unstructured play. Traditionally left to forwards because of their sheer physicality, it is in the modern game, more or less a free for all for both forwards and backs(backline) to gain possession or try and gain possession of the ball so as to gain advantage and score. I may stand to be corrected on some of the more technical point of these, but that's more or less the nutshell....

I love your reactions to our team 😂😂😂...and I LOVE our team! 🇿🇦❤️🇿🇦 I'm so proud of them for winning the world cup this year...for the fourth time in the eight games played since we've been allowed to compete in the world cup. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
If no one has told you, 04:43 is called a scrum (from scrummage). It's an attempt to gain possession of the ball, a way of restarting gameplay...if that is what you meant by your question.
The guy you mentioned wearing the “hat” also called a scrumcap or headguard in rugby there are two in our South African team , Kurtley Arendse (yellow hat) and Cheslin Kolbe (green and black hat) both short , strong and fast
To answer your question @4:50, that is called a (set)scrum, ref calls for it for light offences mostly committed by the team in possession of the ball. The scrum is contested by the forward players of the two teams(positions #1 to #8). The forwards are usually the bigggest players as their jobs requires more mustle than does the backline.
@@jacobfaurie3641 I reckon that the hosts (France) and Ireland will have a real say in your prediction. I really can't see both RSA and NZ surviving the quarter finals. Although with this year's draw, the quarter finals are actually semi finals.
The one thing South Africa has been guaranteed to have for decades is really fast & incredibly skilled wingers😂…I don’t know how we always get lucky with that position but damn we have an abundance of wingers man😂…them boys are entertaining.
Dont think I can even watch it on TV coz of the anxiety and my hubby loves rugby but no thanks... I feek like I am about to witness a terrible accident.
Most expressive sport I have ever experienced and viewed. Fathers this is where I learned of maintaining composer under extreme fitigue conditions. But the more you play a game of rugby even "touch Rugby" is like nectar to the average male mind. The game goes on after the fall. Rugby taugh me how to get up after the knock. Knowing when to stop. Understanding when the whistle really blows. I feel my country. I hear their pain but more you watch our rugby something happens. With the right coach ( Rassie). It's something to see. Long awaited and and people's choice for coaching springboks! 1995 w cup final NZ VS RSA
The All Blacks and Springboks have played each other 103 times, with the All Blacks leading the series 61 to 38, with 4 matches drawn. Blows your comment out the water.
The All Blacks are the best team in rugby history, world cup wins will not take that away when their head to head record and overall winning percentage is vastly superior. They are probably the most successful sporting team in international sports history. The Boks lose 5 to 6 games per season Mr best team in history.
Proud Springbok supporter, our men are amazing! Just wanted to say that its got nothing to with bullying- its a very physical game but there's also a huge mental part to it too, its about getting under the opponent's skin. Love our Bokke!!
🤣 what a great edit. I am very proud of what SA Rugby is doing. Thank you for highlighting our skills and passion. You made me smile today, thank, you. And yes, we are a very complex mix of breeds. Resilient.
Ah nice to see a Swazi and Dlamini no less my best friend is a Dlamini also originally from Swaziland we just other side of the border from you guys in Jozini Zululand.
Love the appreciation of the rules by both players at 6:36 . . Tackler releasing the offensive player after the tackle and the tackled player releasing the ball after being tackled.
RUGBY IS THE ONLY SPORT THAT BRINGS SA NATION TOGETHER. We all become one when the Springboks play. I love South Africa and my Western Province rugby in Cape Town.
That thing where they huddle and band together, that's called a scrum. What do they feed the Springboks? Pap, vleis (meat) and chakalaka. Who is the little dude in the scrum cap? Probably Cheslin Kolbe. Other little dude is Faf de Klerk. Loved your reaction!❤ Had me laughing so hard every so often. Proudly South African.
Our Springboks have also had some rough years which have made the wins so much better. You will often see in Club/League rugby where International players will target each other so that when the time comes to pick the Springbok Squad for the season, half of our best players get "taken out" in league, like the "Super 15" where clubs from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa all play for the League Title.. Kind of like in the NHL clubs where you have players from Russia, France, USA and Canada playing together and then playing for their country against each other when the Olympics comes round. So if a top springbok is playing for an SA club, against a NZ club, the NZ club players will target that one top player so he cant play internationals, its hardcore! So basically.. That shitty tacktick MADE the Springboks tough AF and hardened them ALL!
It's called a scrum my man. The Springboks top feature. It's literally a force against force where both teams are pushing as hard as they can to make the other team move backwards. We are playing a big match for the world cup rugby today! Go bokke!
Fun fact. We (South Africa) are current World Champions and this year is the next Rugby World Cup. So if anyone wants to watch the Springboks play this year is the time.
Rugby players get paid well, but nowhere near NFL salaries. Love your reactions. The US has an excellent rugby comp going, it just needs more exposure within the US and more money. Their are some very very good young players in the US coming through at the moment, The US is going to be a rugby force in the next few years. I'm a Kiwi rugby fan, There's a world cup this year, and South Africa are definitely front runners. They are formidable, dangerous and explosive on the field and will dismantle any team, including the AB's.
I think the Springboks and AB games are always a nervous situation for both teams fans. I think there are many teams this year (2023) who are up there with these 2, Ireland, France and Australia. England is battling internal politics so close to a world cup might hurt them. In no way are the other teams of lessor quality. A lot of depth in the World 1st tier teams this year. Looking forward to the RWC in France. ( Try to be unbia, disclaimer, I am a Boks fan though.)
Im going to have to check out some of the US rugby teams. I never knew it was a thing over here until I started reacting to rugby videos. Never really met anyone that played or watched the game. Thanks for watching I appreciate it 🙏🏻
I wouldn't say that the US will be a formidable team in a few years. I'd say they will be a competent team that will consistently qualify for the world cup. They will be a solid tier 2 team like Italy and Japan but I don't see them becoming super competitive with the tier 1 teams for at least another 10-20 years. Unless rugby suddenly becomes the biggest sport in the country
@@onejayp rugby like most sports outside the USA has strict salary caps. So salary wise a pro rugby player is looking at 600k per year usd with top players getting upto 3 to 5 million per year usd. Rugby careers are typically long compared to nfl careers. Due in large part to how thr rugby community works (respecting your opponents off the field) after their pro career they tend to get jobs in high level positions in businesses, as the skill on the field to "manage a war " is transferable into life skills. Nfl is a coaches game, where players don't make on the field decisions about strategy. Due to the fluid nature of rugby the players need to adapt as the game progresses.
The team are fed on Braai's and Sadza. And Pap en Vleis. They are also always given the psychological advantage of playing rugby as if they are fighting a war to protect their fellow countrymen. Whenever they play, they always play super physical. Our number 1 opponent the All Blacks from New Zealand have said it was always the heaviest game to play when playing the Springboks because of how physical and attritional our boys make it. Because our Boks don't just tackle, they tackle with their everything as if their very lives depended on it. Which is why they make it hurt. And because the Boks make it hurt, they don't get hurt easily either so it's fantastic. 4:57 That's called a scrum. Basically the forwards numbered one to eight on their shirts are part of the forward pack and they are involved in the scrums and lineouts officially. Lineouts being, ball goes out and an opposition hooker (#2 on his back) throws the ball in to two lines of forwards one line from each team. This enables opposition to contest the lineouts but it also tests the strength and tactics of the forwards packs against each other. Early on in the game, the forwards packs were only used as battering rams in scrums and catchers in lineouts. They never trained to run, that was the job of the backs (#11-15) and then scrumhalf (#9) would connect between the two getting the ball from the forwards and throwing it to the backs. The Flyhalf (#10) is the standard kicker. However, as the game got more professional the forwards would start running as well, the kicker isn't necessarily #10 although he usually is, and basically if a player has the ball he must run it. Lastly, the idea of the guys dotting the ball down over the goal line initially was a variation of soccer or football where you didn't get any points there, that was the place where the Flyhalf would then attempt to kick the ball through the posts over the crossbar. And naturally the further out wide it was the further back the kicker had to stand. However, since the game got more professional the try as it is called, players dotting the ball down over the line, became a way to score as well and since it wasn't easy they gave it a bigger point incentive than the kicks over the posts. So 5 points for a try, 2 points for conversion, kicking the ball through the posts following a try and 3 points each for either a penalty kick or a drop goal. So it's also an amazing simply for how many different ways there are to score.
Best thing for me is that even as a fairly divided country, when someone picks on a Bok player- he is backed up by the whole team. That’s what SA needs
The Spilringboks - Won the world cup for rugby 3 times, now in the quarter finals for the present world cup, 2023. One of the strongest and most strategically superior teams in the world, no doubt about it.
4:55 - It's called a scrum whereby both apposing teams basically try out-muscle the other team to contest for the ball. Usually a scrum down is called after a player has knocked the ball forward from open play or a penalty (You get 4 options, tap and play, scrum, kick for the line or kick for posts)
In terms of your question regarding what we eat, it’s good old South African meat - beef, chicken, pork, lamb and our vegetables my friend. We also drink anyone under the table and will take you for a morning run with a breakfast martini in your belly before you have a strong breakfast to head off to work to go conquer your day. We’re also South Africans - we are Africans. We are bred to be fighters and warriors. From birth, we enter this world to dominate everything outside of the SA tribe. Rugby isn’t for babies and it’s our No. 1 sport man. It doesn’t get more real than this.
My theory is that it starts with high school. The boys are rough and play with guys from the farms (they are big boys). They mellow down but become aware of their surroundings due to the crime in the country and can run if need be (away or to help). There is a lot of pride in their country and team so there's pressure to perform. They are gentle giants but don't mess with them, or the country's women. My nephew is the VC of his first team in an all-boys school. His skinny butt looks confused in the team pictures. Lol, he will learn. If I remember correctly during the 1995 world cup Jonah Lomu (New Zealand) gave some issues cause he was massive and hard to stop. The S.A. team managed to get him down by 3 of them holding onto him. If there is a will, there is a way and South Africans are really good at finding a solution to a messed-up situation while laughing. P.S. That dome they were doing is called a scrum.
The All Blacks and Springboks have played each other 103 times, with the All Blacks leading the series 61 to 38, with 4 matches drawn. Currently the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand is one the most played of any two international rugby union teams, and having played against each other 175 times, the All Blacks lead the series 122 to 45 with 8 draws Of the 43 matches with England , New Zealand have won 33 and England 8, with two draws. The All Blacks have won 48 Tests against France's 13, with one match drawn. The All Blacks first played against Ireland in 1905, have played a total of 36 Test matches, with the All Blacks winning 30, Ireland winning 5, and 1 match drawn.
True, that’s one way to look at it. The All Blacks have won more, but here’s another way to look at it… both countries are sitting on 3 World Cup wins, so SA won when it mattered most. If you look at NZ records out of the World Cup, you’d expect them to have 5 maybe 6 trophies. As a South African, I can honestly say that when the AB team is working well, they score tries almost at will… but that’s just as true of SA. I really want to see a WC final where both teams are at their peak. It’d be quite the spectacle.
S.A have been the better team of late but the ABs seem to evolve the game with young talent ,although at their own demise sometimes @@pieterrossouw8596
Just remember south africa didn't play many games during apartheid. Other countries didn't want to play against them because of sanctions. So yes the all blacks have the numbers but the springboks didn't play as much. And during that time rugby wasn't seen as a profession in South Africa. It was like a club, players would have normal day jobs and play on the weekend.

Proudly South African 🇿🇦 GO BOKKE!!
As a South African this gives me absolutely chills 🇿🇦
😂DIE BOKKE is die beste 🙌🇿🇦 Resilience & humility at its finest…that’s what we made of in South Africa ❤️🥳
The guy you mentioned wearing the “hat” also called a scrumcap or headguard in rugby there are two in our South African team , Kurtley Arendse (yellow hat) and Cheslin Kolbe (green and black hat) both short , strong and fast
We are always very happy when it is SA versus NZ. Two best teams in rugby.
Good explanation, and the springboks i would say has hands down the best scrum in world rugby

3 world cup victories for South Africa, only equaled by New Zealand. These two teams encompass the biggest rivalry in the world of rugby
Some would argue in all international sports. But being South African, I definitely am biased. So in the top 20 at least?
hmm the kiwis are the better team and have been for a long time.

@@jasonmckay8793 I think the best World Cup Final will be the Boks and All Blacks
@@jacobfaurie3641 I reckon that the hosts (France) and Ireland will have a real say in your prediction. I really can't see both RSA and NZ surviving the quarter finals. Although with this year's draw, the quarter finals are actually semi finals.
Not just the team, the whole nation
The one thing South Africa has been guaranteed to have for decades is really fast & incredibly skilled wingers😂…I don’t know how we always get lucky with that position but damn we have an abundance of wingers man😂…them boys are entertaining.
Really proud of our Springboks-rugby team and our Proteas- cricket team. #Proudly 🇿🇦
Two of my favourite players Faff De Clerk aka the giant slayer and Cheslin Kolbe both play for the Springboks
Love em, but Kurt Lee is something else
the only guy to evere greet royalty wearing n underwear lol
Cheslin Kolbe is one of my favourite backs ever 💪🏿
As a mom in SA with a 9 year old boy who loves playing rugby at school, even the school rugby is not for the faint hearted 😂
That head helmet guy he just pops out of nowhere I swear a true springbok like the animal jumps like crazy too😍
The springboks have the potential to become the best team in the history of the game this year
I am sure they are gonna win the world cup this year. Everything is falling in place and Rassie Erasmus always has the best formula to win!
Dream boy all blacks
Eh, whens last time you beat Ireland lol
Proud Springbok supporter, our men are amazing! Just wanted to say that its got nothing to with bullying- its a very physical game but there's also a huge mental part to it too, its about getting under the opponent's skin. Love our Bokke!!
🤣 what a great edit. I am very proud of what SA Rugby is doing. Thank you for highlighting our skills and passion. You made me smile today, thank, you. And yes, we are a very complex mix of breeds. Resilient.

all blacks re the biggest threat we are facing ...and ireland
Love the appreciation of the rules by both players at 6:36 . . Tackler releasing the offensive player after the tackle and the tackled player releasing the ball after being tackled.
Great individual players + great team work = magic
Thanks for doing this. Love it. World Rugby Cup has started. So Let the games begin. Bring the trophy home Bokke.
There is actually two little guys with the hat on (scrum cap) it’s Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt Lee Arendse, they’re both very good players
Cannot be more proud of our South African team.
RUGBY IS THE ONLY SPORT THAT BRINGS SA NATION TOGETHER. We all become one when the Springboks play. I love South Africa and my Western Province rugby in Cape Town.
For us rugby is not a matter of life and death. It's more important than that. Proudly South African. World Champions 🏆
This is why we are 3 times World Champions. Holding the title at the moment. We come out of the womb loving this sport😂❤🇿🇦
Makes me proud as a South African!
They are mostly fed with vegetables, pap also braii because is originated mostly in south africa. 🇿🇦🇿🇦
Our passion for our country they go all out and hard proudly south african
Go bokke!
As a South African I am proud
Yebo
These guys make me proud to be a South African 🙌❤️🔥🔥💪
We met Even Etzebeth over the Christmas holiday and seeing him in person is just wow! HE IS A ABSOLUTE BEAST!
Hope you didn't call him Even.
Fun fact. We (South Africa) are current World Champions and this year is the next Rugby World Cup. So if anyone wants to watch the Springboks play this year is the time.
Springbok is the best .it will never ever let you down. They are really magnificent
all blacks are better though
I must say OUR SOUTH AFRICAN RUGBY TEAM IS DAMN STRONG. ❤️
Thanks for watching I appreciate it 🙏🏻
@@roadgossip true that. Ireland of course appears to be the team to beat. At world cups my 2ns favourite after the ABs is the Bokks.
So proud to be south African rn😂
The Spilringboks - Won the world cup for rugby 3 times, now in the quarter finals for the present world cup, 2023. One of the strongest and most strategically superior teams in the world, no doubt about it.
IT'S CALLED A SCRUM PROUD SOUTH AFRICAN RUGBY KID HERE
Proudly South African our boys don't drink English tea and wat croissants no sir,,,they Pap,Wors and Chakalaka ❤
They make me proud to be South African ❤🔥🔥🔥
Wanted to say this. Springboks maybe one of the best but All blacks is their stop sign.
Yep and the Boks won 3 World Cups in two less attempts..
We won the world cup 3 times im proud of my boys we love them all
The huddle type thing you asked about is called a scrum
