  • Jacques Offenbach's Opéra bouffe with the legendary "Hell Cancan" is one of the greatest stage hits of all time. The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra brings "Orphée aux enfers", the satire of the Greek myth of Orpheus, to the stage of the Elbphilharmonie with the NDR Vokalensemble, a magnificent line-up of soloists and Marc Minkowski conducting.

    I'm curious as to what this overture is. It's not the overture named for and generally know as preceding this opera.

      It is a prelude to the second version from 1874.

      There are three overtures to Orphee aux Enfers: the first, written by Offenbach in an 18th century pastiche style for Paris in 1858, the second and most famous one, written in 1860 for Vienna by Carl Binder, the third one (heard here) written in 1874, by Offenbach.
