- In this episode, we share breaking news from Retro-bit regarding the Collector's Edition of Mega Man: The Wily Wars coming for the Sega Genesis & Mega Drive.
The team at Retro-bit is at it again, bringing a rare or limited release game to the masses with one of the coolest collector's sets we've seen them do to-date. Previously only available in Japan and PAL Territories, in 1994 Capcom actually took the first 3 Mega Man games from the NES and re-released them for the Sega Mega Drive or Genesis in a collection called the Wily Wars. They also added a 4th, unlockable game if you completed all 3 main titles, in a game called Wily Tower. While physical releases were available outside the USA, the NTSC US version of Wily Wars was actually cancelled. The only way someone could play this prior to now was via the Sega Channel, Sega's online service that virtually no-one had, play a ROM on the Genesis Mini or Mega Drive Mini, import a copy, or use a bootleg. That is, until now.
Retro-bit has once again partnered with Capcom to bring this lost treasure back for a limited time re-release. Unlike other releases from Retro-bit where there has been both a Collector's Edition with all the goods and a cartridge-only variant, this will only be available as the full Collector's Edition. Inside the box, you're going to get some really cool stuff, from interchangeable box inserts, stickers, full-color manual, and a ton more. To help protect and maintain the collector's market, Retro-bit has made the shell of this release a different color to easily identify it as different. That's something that is commendable to help avoid any confusion. They've also made sure to use high-quality boards and components, ensuring that unlike some bootleg and off-brand reproductions, cough Etsy cough, these won't damage your system. Finally, there will be versions for both NTSC & PAL territories.
At $69.99, this looks to be another killer collection from Retro-bit. Pre-orders look to ship in summer of 2021 from top retailers around the world. Since this is a limited release, I cannot recommend pre-ordering enough. If you are at all interested in this set, this is the best way to ensure you get one when they are released. Make sure to follow us and Retro-bit for more details as we have them regarding the shipping of the Mega Man: Wily Wars Collector's Edition.

I'm glad they're bringing a physical cartridge of Mega Man the Wily Wars out that is so cool but isn't it the same thing a s playing it on the Sega Genesis mini isn't it the same games even though it is emulated
@@monteranceross8846 No, as they have optimized the code to reduce lag and slowdown, where to the best of my knowledge, that did not happen with the Genesis Mini. Also, you're getting the multiple pack in bonus items.
Now this really getting exciting since this game only came out in Europe and Japan until now. It's so good to see this in the USA in a physical form 😎💪🏻
100%!
Any idea when it’s coming out, I pre Oder mine but never had a day release?
I really, really hope more companies do these collaboration releases for original systems. There are so many games out there I’d love to own but can’t afford since video games are now sought after by even non-gamers as investments.
Retro-Bit has done a ton of these with more in the way
Worth mentioning that Retrobit improved a lot of the slowdown making this the best version of Wily Wars out there.
That they did, they mentioned that in the press release as well. So far this has played wonderfully for me
I remember first playing this game via emulation on my PC back in the late 90s. Those felt like such adventurous times! I’m delighted to see retrobit continuing to release physical carts for these kinds of games, let’s hope this trend continues! Oh, and fav classic title was MM4, It’s all about Pharaoh Man!
Very cool!
Hey Gary, I have a high quality repro on an original Genesis circuit board. Do you think this is worth the price or should I just hold on to what I have now?
Without seeing the board it's impossible for me to tell. I will say, if you are a fan of Mega Man, specifically the first 3 games, I would highly recommend it.
@@RoXolid Thanks man.
Of course
I remember first hearing about The Wily Wars years ago, probably around 1998 or so, online, and was fascinated by the concept of Mega Man on the Genesis. Having played this version on the Genesis Mini, I'm not as impressed as I hoped I would be, so I'll pass on this release, but it's still the first three Mega Man games and is a good time.
I get that
Excellent work on this video, Gary. Really looking forward to picking this one up!
Thank you sir, this looks super cool for sure!!
I’m going to play this on my 32X , yeah 😎
Um... It's.. it's not a 32x game
@@RoXolid is the 32X able to play genesis games?
No. When a Genesis game is inserted into the 32x it is basically just a cartridge extension, it just passes the signal thru. Zero processing is done by the 32x
Wily Wars 2 with 4-6 would be pretty cool
True, to bad it was never made
look up Mega Man: The Sequel Wars by SokZaJelo. It's a fan game for the genesis built from the ground up. It's still in development, but it shows a lot of promise.
@@BlazingFireOMEGA nice! I gotta check that out
Very cool might have to get this, thanks for sharing Gary!
Green with envy?
@@RoXolid I see what you did there.
But did you?
Gotta go with Mega Man 2 as my favorite NES Mega Man, with 3 a close second.
Man, I'm so exited about this release! I've been waiting for a long time for Retro-Bit to give us an update about this release since they tweeted about it time ago. Definitively picking this up ASAP!
Yes, they are always working on fun things!
i love mega man games, i would buy them every efing time! 🔥
They are amazing! And the music, timeless!!
Where can I buy this? I don't know of the retailers that usually sell this kind of thing and searches give me too much unrelated information. Retro-Bit doesn't have it to order, either! I remember playing this on that Genesis network back in the day and always wondered why they wouldn't release it like normal. That network was a hassle.
Retro-Bit just announted that the shipment has been delayed. You can pre-order at CastlemaniaGames via:
castlemaniagames.com/products/mega-man-the-wily-wars?ref=RoXolid
@@RoXolid Thanks for the info… pre-orders are closed but I signed up for notifications if they get more in!
Pretty stoked to have an official version of this in the collection--and honestly, I love when they do the fun cartridge colors so that's a selling point for Lady Laci alone.
Ohhh, about that...
No copies for Xacto Knife thieves, sorry bout yer luck there....
I guess my favorite of the Mega Man series would be Mega Man 3, which was the first Mega Man I ever played -- just love that music, especially the Snake Man level! I also love the first Mega Man X for the Super NES. I had never heard about the port for the original Genesis, so thank you for doing this video! I just saw this vid a day before the preorder cut off! Yikes! But it is ordered! I can't wait for the actual cart shipping a few month from now. Hopefully, I will have a Retro TINK 5x by the time the Mega Man: Wily Wars cartridge ships. I can't wait to bring out the Genesis and have some official Capcom goodness! That transparent Blue Sparkle cart will be stunning. Do you know if the cartridge sleeve is what I used to call the hard clamshell cartridge box? I never heard the box referred to as a sleeve... lol. Thanks for this vid, Gary! I honestly would have totally missed this Mega Man Collection if I wouldn't have watched your video. Cheers!
Hey just a quick question. Are the boards they used earlier for the brawlers collection and joe & mac collection good as well?
Yes they are. That's been one of the things they focused on early in these collector's sets, dating back to R-Type and Holy Diver.
Even though the original game did come out in the PAL region, the price these days is astronomical! So its going to be much cheaper for myself to get this! Its cool with me, since its an officially licensed reproduction! And I like the extras included as well!
I was aware that this comming but my main gripe with this version is that MegaMan has like one more frame to animate shooting and it kind of feels not as immediate precise action of the originals, it takes some getting used to, but in the end it is a good game
They have said they are working to optimize the code to reduce the slowdown as much as possible. We'll see!
I had Mega Man 3 growing up. Shadow Man was the bane of my existence. lol
I have the Genesis Mini, so I'm good, but I'm glad it'll be getting into more people's hands.
You mean Sega Channel, not Seganet.
Correct
I got Mega Man 1 when it first came out and liked it a lot. Anyone not liking Mega Man 1 just feels so weird.
2 and 3 are near perfect but since I got 2 for my birthday it holds a special place for me.
That's a super fun memory!
This is also available on sega genesis mini
I did not know .
@@Gleamoz I wonder if is this the same version
Idk either but I suck at the game cus I can’t charge up. I grew up with mega man X lol
I never liked the Wily Wars ports as much as the originals because of Mega Man's reduced fire rate, but it's still worth it for the unique content, and I'm glad that the US is finally getting quality repro carts!
Yeah, you can only shoot 3 blasts at any one time.
In my case of the first 3 games, the 3rd is my favorite but... perhaps the main reason is because it was the very 1st Mega Man game I played, hopefully I can get one (hopefully they have the chance of getting only the game as well in case someone don't need the rest of the collector's edition stuff or can't afford for those extras).
Edit: Seems like for now is only the limited collector's edition... kind of a shame, but I know for sure that I want to nab a preorder (based on what I saw in Castlemania's page they ship them in September... maybe is just a placeholder date but... if that ends up being the case, it could be a perfect birthday self-gift for me).
Futaba? As in RC?
As I mentioned in this video, only the Collector's Edition will be available, not a cartridge-only version.
Hi everybody! I would love to have a cartdrige because the costs for a original cartdrige are ridiculous. I'm from Switzerland, so I need a PAL-Version. Unfortunately I can't find a pre-order possibility in european partner shops (Strictly Limited Games, DragonBox Shop etc.), like it's announced on the Retro-Bit homepage. Has somebody more information? Ist it possible to play the game on a Genesis and Mega Drive (I've only got Mega Drive Consoles). Thanks in advance for some information:)!
Megaman 1 would be remembered a lot more fondly if the following Megaman games didn't improve the game play so significantly.
Kind of like your streams would be remembered more fondly if not for... oh, nevermind ;)
This game was one of the reasons why I picked up a Sega Genesis mini. I would have skipped that just for this
I get that
Can't wait how i long for a us release wooooo looks amazing
Same here!
@@RoXolid yes sooo beyond amped for it pre-ordering asap
@@josuefret1499 Pre-Orders open FRIDAY!
@@RoXolid wooooo am there
I grew up with the first 2 but I remember having already the snes but getting mega man 6 for the new as a gift. Man I loved having that jet pack lol is a great game but all original 6 mega man games are good.
Well Gary my favorite NES Mega Man games in order are 3, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 1. So yes 3 in my opinion is the true absolute best and I agree with you about the first one it's just not that good. It's no secret that people tend to crap on 4, 5 and 6 alot due to the introduction of the Mega Buster.
3 is really good, plus unlike others, I actually liked the addition to Rush later on
The only Megaman games that I've played were on the SNES PS1
Go back and revisit the originals, so good!
What about not a bootleg but on a flash cart? Does It works great on a flash cart?
But then you're downloading content you didn't pay for. Flash carts, depending on the manufacturer but largely don't have the voltage issues that versions you find on repro carts
@@RoXolid good to know. So stick to flash carts. Thank you sir
No, stick to original hardware
@@RoXolid well of course I always try to. But sometimes some games are eaither really expensive or hard to find 🤔 but i hear ya
No OST is a real missed opp
the edges of the conector are apropiate to dont damage the slot of any model of sega geneis console, the thicknes is the same that the old origonal cartidges and apropiate to dont damage the sega genesis cartidge slot?, why dont you put on sale a version without all the extras only the cartridge or only the cartridge and the box without all the other things it willl sell more on that way, the majority of people only want the game with a good cartidge with the correct edges and thicknes a good electrical properties and not the other stuff i hope they answer this and they implement those things
They often do a cart-only and a collectors edition, I don't know why there's only the collectors set this time.
@@RoXolid thanks for the quick answer, if you can talk with them can you please ask the things that i write on my comment, thanks in advance
A rare game, but it's just not as good as the originals. Feels really sluggish. Cool that they're making this though.
That's one of the things Retro-Bit days they worked on, eliminating the lag and sluggishness
@@RoXolid I might grab this I’m glad they are addressing the slow down but addressing may not mean fixing
You should pin this comment saying that the collector's edition is not limited, but an open-preorder.
That's an incorrect statement. It is a limited edition, but the numbers of how many it is limited to is to be determined by the amount of pre-orders. So while the example footage and images provided to me shows account of 4,000, if 18,000 people pre-order it, they're going to fulfill those orders.
@@RoXolid That's what I'm saying.
But everyone keeps thinking that their only 4000 copies *period.*
I just want the confusion and concern to be cleared up.
It’s a repro cartridge anyway with lame extras. Only interesting is the manual…
They did work on the ROM to remove slowdowns.
This would’ve been an instant buy for me had it been available on different platforms. I get it was a Genesis exclusive, but DOOM 64 was an N64 exclusive and that got rereleased on multiple different platforms. Seems like a missed opportunity, especially considering how popular Mega Man is. Oh well, it’s a really nice package otherwise, and the pricing seems fair. Too bad.
Well there's the Gamecube collection if you wanted all of them on a different platform
@@RoXolid I own the Anniversary Collection on Gamecube, sadly, that does not include The Wily Wars. In addition to the first eight mainline games it only has the two arcade fighting games and also the Battle & Chase racing game.
True
@@TIDbitRETRO Correction: Mega Man Anniversary Collection never had Battle & Chase.
@@MasterZebulin You’re right, that was an unlock on the old X collection.
I really don't like the cartridge artwork, they should definitely change that cause it looks very lame and bootleggy.
MM5
I think that's criminally underrated
@@RoXolid Growing up I had a group friends that coordinated getting mega man games, we would trade with each other. so all of us with limited allowances in the early 90's could play MM1-6 and we would stay up all night beating MM1-6. fun times. I was the MM5 and MMX friend.
That's super awesome!
reproduction in collector's edition
Yes and no. It's is a repro, but it is not a bootleg as Retro-Bit worked right with Capcom to ensure that the carts meet their standards.
It is licensed with the IP holders. That means it is a second printing. Not a reproduction.
They looked better - yes! They sounded better? Hell, no! The genesis has aweful sound and music!
Oh I wouldn't say that. The Genesis had a distinctive sound for sure. I will say I prefer the Genesis version of games like Earthworm Jim 1 & 2 on Genesis because of the sound, the deeper bass is something I really dig.
@@RoXolid ok, to be fair: You are right. The Genesis is capable of much more than most of the games offer unfortunately. In most cases I prefer the SNES' sound because the Genesis sounds overdriven and scratchy in the most cases I personally know. I really love games like Story of Thor (Beyond Oasis) or Soleil (Crusader of Centy) but I always hated the sound :D I always was more into Nintendo's consoles but the Genesis has an awesome games library as well.
The Genesis was definitely a different beast in many ways, and the audio was one of the ways that truly set the system apart. Compared to the NES, where those games originally appeared, I do think the Genesis had superior audio. And I will say I am a HUGE SNES fan, its my favorite system of all-time.
Most of the "bad" Genesis soundtracks were in western games and games that composed their music with GEMS. The problem isn't the Yamaha YM2612 it's the limited sound engines people used to compose music on it. Developers that had their on in house sound engines made some amazing music for the console.
That said I agree I prefer the NES music to the Genesis music for these Mega Man games though the music here isn't bad, it's just different.
Totally agree. Also, Earthworm sound better on the Genesis
