- Fire Emblem is back with a vengeance. It's time to ENGAGE WITH THE ENEMY, or engage with my long lost RUclips algorithm apparently. But this is pretty exciting, I hope you guys like the analysis.
I kept it simple, so let me know what you think in the comments below and hopefully we get some more news soon!

I loved the part where Toothpaste-chan yells to Marth "It's Engagin' time!", and Fire Emblem'd all over the final boss. Truly a game of the decade.
*ahem* It’s Morbin’ time!
@@ryanlapolt6957 actually it's moebin time
It’s morphin time go go go
Shit meme
Worth mentioning that Sigurd actually DOES have tyrfing in the combat animation around 20:00
I think what they’re trying to do with the follow up attacks is make it clear what is a brave attack vs normal follow up attacks. Because we see the brawler get her damage X2 but everyone else who attacks twice has that weird different numbering.
So my guess would be if a unit has a brave weapon and does a follow up attack it would be 20X2 | 20X2, instead of 20X4 like it used to be.
Also personal thoughts I like it so far, excited for something new
Correct this is how it's supposed to be read
I actually really like how they decided to do multi hits, because some attacks do let you hit twice before your opponent and others don't. I feel like there might be more attacks and abilities that switch that up, so if they have that information available it will help gameplay.
I.e. if they change the hit order if an opponent has Vantage, that would be REALLY good to know.
I think it would, the red arrow would come first when vantage is being activated

Toothpaste-kun

Hector and Ephram fans crushed when they saw Ike with an axe and Sigurd with a lance
Two more things that I just wanna throw in there:
-One of the maps looks like a Defend Map, the one where the mage girl engages with Celica and uses Ragnarok Warp, especially when it's shown at an earlier part of the trailer.
-For some reason, a lot of the attacks that the player controlled characters land show "Break" upon the hit, so there seems to be a new mechanic at play here.
It is a skill from the digest videos I’ve seen. I think it has to do with the attack and speed stat, that or it’s triggered with crit.
@@liamwilson7549 It's definitely not a crit, there is a normal critical hit performed by the Pegasus Knight Chloé at some point.
@@hansgretl1787 I’m just saying the proc itself that triggers the skill. They seem to be similar to how awakening skills proc. I also noticed there is a bonus applied to some skills called “Type Bonus” I believe this correlates to the weapon the character is using, that or the class being the same as the summoned hero. You can see that here at 19:31
@@liamwilson7549 oh, I gotcha.
Picking this one up day 1. Anything for toothpaste-chan, Gust being involved also gives me faith that this game will look good.
Alright so I can't be the only one that see this as the original idea for Tokyo Mirage Sessions right?
I'm speculating, but a reason for having individual attack numbers (instead of eg 10X2) is they could be implementing effects that means your second attack may not be the same as the first.
Seems they'd have a reason for it from a design point
Some things things that stood out to me:
+19:49 Alfred equipping Sigurd seems to have increased his Move by 1. I'm wondering if this might be part of why the base move rates seem so low, if they can be boosted with certain rings. If the move bonus increases as their Bond increases (Bond is shown as 1 here, and Sigurd is barely increasing Alfred's other stats), then it might be that Move gradually increases throughout the game via this mechanic.
+20:00 Sigurd is clearly using a sword in this animation, and it looks like the Tyrfing.
+16:30 This combat forecast is hella wacky. Chloe is using a Slim Lance, doing 42 damage twice to an enemy with a Hammer. That enemy is doing 0 damage, with 0% hit. Chloe only has 24 HP, so she doesn't seem to be super high level compared to the enemy (who has 31 HP).
+23:25 This Warp Ragnarok move is also doing area of effect damage in a cross. You can see the outline of the AoE, and also see it damages two enemies. So I wonder if the various rings grant Gambit-like attacks, and if this is one of them. Also notable here is that the attack seems to have costed 1 HP, because you can see Celine and Celica were at 11HP on the map, but once it gets to the combat animation, they are at 10HP. Not sure if that means all tomes are going to cost HP like in Gaiden, or if it's these Gambit-like moves.
What worries me a bit is that there doesn't seem to be a 2d portrait for the characters anymore. I don't see any here and I'm afraid that all of this will be replaced by 3d portraits
I’ll be sad if Robin doesn’t appear in the game. I understand why Lucina was chosen but I think Robin also deserves to appear since they are pretty much the main character of Awakening with Chrom and Lucina sharing 2nd main character place
I want more fem! Robin rep!!!
It’s so interesting that of the 3 modern MC characters, Robin is the only one who hasn’t made an appearance yet. It makes sense, especially if fell dragons are involved (maybe Robin will make an appearance) but yeah. No Shez is unforgivable though (jk)
The plot of awakening revolves around chrom primarily though, with robin having more of a presence than kris but mostly due to their fell dragon connection. I think they mostly chose these by heroes popularity and wanted to keep an even gender ratio as well, so lucina was an obvious choice here.
Marth is Now a Persona
You haven’t played Tokyo Mirage Sessions have you?
Yes I have
Very underrates 💎
Duma was (one of?) the dragons with a third eye in his forehead.
I wonder what amiibo will do if it gives stat buffs to rings, phantom summons, a gotcha system roll , or random items like 3 houses
I think it’s semi-funny that they revealed this about 5 before it’s release date and they did the same with 3Hopes it was revealed in February and about 5 months later was the release in June.
At 12:32 I can’t tell if the red haired hero icon is Roy but to me it kind of looks more like Minerva, I say this because like with 3Hopes where they didn’t reveal a majority of the returning characters until much closer to the release but you could still relatively make out some characters on the map screen and whatnot in trailed leading to said release (before their initial reveal later on). Edit; it really could just be Celica but I just can’t get out of my mind that the image is depicting Minerva.
I hope this made sense
I'm assuming you can only use ring effects after merge for 6 turns per map
I'm going to Engage in physical violence
Lol, it's the "Sonic Forces" meme all over again 😂
Fire Emblem Engage in war crimes
Pretty sure there's no class changing, it's just that a tome user that currently has Sigurd equipped as an emblem. This seems to be tripping a bunch of people up for some reason, they keep saying "Sigurd" or "Celica" as though those are the units on the field.
I think for the rings and corresponding characters there might be a class requirement of some sorts. Both Marth and Sigurd are equipped to characters who seemingly align with the knight/cavalier class line. Likewise, Celica will likely align with mage units. Would also explain why some characters aren’t wielding their more iconic weapons like Ike and Lucina, otherwise damn near would have to be a sword unit for the rings to be equitable.
i think the silver haired girl with feathers in her hair is probably the white dragon they show her right after showing the dragon and it a common enough thing to see in FE
Rings summoning a sounds like similar to FEH with its summoning
coincidence I think not it better be optional and not mandatory
but we will find out if it’s gacha based mechanic hopefully not
and we can get the other characters via story or DLC I hope
we get more information later on especially if weapons break
or not.
It most definitely isn't a gacha system. The character states that the goal is to gather all of the rings. If it sides with the story, then it would seem the ring acquirement isn't optional to begin with.
@@crusiver8453 that’s what I was worried about when
I saw it I’m glad we get it through storyline

The hit affects in this new game looks quite good in my opinion
as long as characters from series other than awakening three houses and fates i can deal with it, i hope there is more than just the ones on the wheel and i hope those are just the "stronger than others" ones. Because it feels like how they are being used they will be based on a class to enhance characters to that class or add bonuses (Marth for your base lord and probably generic sword users, Sigurd for Paladin/Cavaliers) Thus showing why they have Lucina with a Bow and Ike with an Axe, the big thing is "will there be one for Pegasus and Wyvern riders" There are some obvious characters from past games to hit those "classess" Sheeda/Elincia for pegasus riders, Claude for Wyvern riders, Sothe for Theives you can run with Hector as a Knight/General. because otherwise just the 12 then some characters may just end up way better just because of synergy with the heroes.
This actually makes a lot of sense, originally I thought it was due to heroes. Brave Ike (AKA Ike with Urvan) and Legendary Lucina are the most popular versions of the characters in Heroes, so I thought that might be a reason, but yours makes a lot of sense. I also find it strange Lucina got chosen when Chrom really is the main focus of that game, plus in Heroes, he constantly uses bows now. The only thing I can think of being weird though is Eirika, who also has a sword and I’m guessing is the same class as Marth, unless they made her a cavalier.
@@TheKingSothis if it is a "coverage for classes" type thing like i suspect, Ephraim would've made more sense to cover the Soldier/Halbadier esq thing but i think Eirika got chosen due to Female rep if its just the 12, if its expanded i expect her to fill the "sword cavalier" niche, Can also say Azura would cover the "dancer/songstress" class
This is a different take on the Fire Emblem we're used to, and I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. I fear Fire Emblem may be starting to lose its charm :/
The series won't lose its charm because of this game. If things don't work out well with this game, they'll move on from it.
Unlike most developers these days, at least the Fire Emblem developers SOMETIMES listen. Plenty of us were disappointed Three Houses ditched weapon triangle and thankfully now it seems to be back as of this game.
Don't lost hope in this series just because this game likely won't win you over.
@@tidepoolclipper8657 True, they do sometimes listen. I’m just worried we’re starting to lose what makes Fire Emblem… Fire Emblem. If that makes sense? But, you’re totally right. There’s nothing wrong with trying new things, so I’m glad IS isn’t afraid of change (like Pokémon is, for instance). Maybe Engage will surprise us all!
I know many people aren't going to agree with what I said, but don't lose hope either way. Move on from the game if it doesn't work out, because there will be good Fire Emblem games in the future. There are IPs that way more ruined than Fire Emblem.
@@tidepoolclipper8657 Well said.
This is just an anniversary game.
No need to be dramatic
The attack animations look so much better than 3H imo, also the weapon triangle is back? We can change our units clothes (you kinda could in 3H I guess but this seems more expansive)? Not gonna lie I'm liking most of what I'm seeing so far.
23:20 is this the first time in the series a single player action can actually kill 2 enemy units?
17:35 it says bond effects in the top right corner 🤔
Woo!
I think Lyn being chosen might partially be for waifu reasons, but is also just for variety's sake. Eliwood is just Roy with less recognizability because of smash. At least Lyn has green hair and that nomad aesthetic. Could have done Hector I suppose, but then he's pretty similar to Ike with Urvan
I’m not trying to be wet blanket here, but the trailer really looked like a mobile game and it appears to have the exact same scenario as awakening.
I honestly thought it was just an expansion for heroes not the next mainline entry.
I thought the same. More often then not when a game is compared to a mobile game it has to do with the UI and character design. The UI looks basic as hell and none of the characters really stood out to me. It is an improvement graphically from 3h at least.
Those apple textures still haunt me to this day.
You say it looks like a mobile game, when it doesn't really look like one. It looks like a good quality Switch game in terms of graphics. I don't get where people saying it looks like a mobile game are coming from. It might look on the level of Genshin, but Genshin is an exception not a rule.
@@jossebrodeur6033 its that gimmick along with the most basic designs in the series.
It really looks like it was made with gacha mechanics in mind.
Not saying it IS going to be this way, just that’s my impression from the trailer.
3h had a really bad first trailer too that made it look like a medieval highschool simulator and it turned out way better than I thought so im keeping my fingers crossed that its just bad marketing.

@@jossebrodeur6033 And Genshin doesn't even look bad, it's just because hating Genshin Impact is trendy, that's all
This game's artstyle is nice honestly, not my favorite but also really pretty
Its odd how we got brave ike and legendary Lucina over base forms
I like to think of this as the sonic generations of fire emblem. So long as we go back to a regular game after this, I'm down for a celebration title
It's likely that Lucina doesn't have Falchion, Byleth doesn't have the SotC amd sp fprth on the mural because they wanted each represented lord to have a different weapon from FE's history, certainly this is why you had lords like Lyn and Celica who *aren't* the main characters of the games they represent front and center in the presentation, because if you look closely, they've carefully chosen the reps from each installation of Fire Emvblem so it's an alternating Male -> Female > Male pattern from Marth to Byleth.
They'll probably have their signature weapons later on when Engaged, possibly locked behind a support ranks.
Ngl I’m not impressed with the trailer but I also hated Three House’s first trailer and ended up loving that game so I’m not gonna parse judgement just yet. The slim but real possibility Leo is in this game makes me very excited though
Yeah it's too early to tell.
Trash on three house's early on too but look at how it went lol
Enjoyed it
10 is maybe what your usual damage would be and the 21 is what you have thanks to your engagement.
The Main questions of all questions: Does Fire Emblem Engage takes place before or after Three Houses??
Fire emblem n-gage? Can we use our phone with it?! This is awesome!!!!
lol I didn't expect this joke
10:40 iirc the color coding of the weapons first originated in Fates.
Sigurd having (also) a Lance is not weird, since in FE 4 he could use them but also in Awakening there is a Lance called Sigurd's lance
The more times I watch the trailer the more hype I get. It looked pretty bad at first but now I have a feeling that this will end up being the best game in the series, just from a few of the mechanics and maps shown off so far. I have absolute sky high expectations for this game, cannot wait.
Genealogy remake is coming right after this.
Please be right
If there's marriage and hopefully there is I'm already got my eyes on the dancer.
It gives me very gba game vibes with the map style
The red hair commander is being manipulated by the evil dragon maybe ? And the red hair kid will ask us to save him. The black girl is definitely from the desert. The mage may be from the north kingdom and the blond guy from the west
I think the middle island is the fell dragon
So this was intended to come out in 2021, but COVID and perhaps other stuff delayed it? Hmm…
I have to admit that while I don’t love the apparent future-style setting, or the crossover element (it’s why I don’t care for any of the spin-off save “Three Hopes”, I just like FE best when each world has its own story), there is stuff I do like. The cobra-dragon who probably is an original villain (albeit probably harnessing the power of old foes) looks fantastic, and the gameplay finally looks lively (the sprites on the map moving always made it look better than the 3D battle maps). I want to give it the benefit of the doubt and I don’t think this will override future titles from being original… but yeah, it is somewhat concerning. And the title is weird along with going back to one word subtitles (even in JN they have a single word technically for 3H, but at least the translation and ENG title were… more).
Fingers crossed for January 2023, I guess.

No one talk about pantsless Marth in the art

can we pls talk about the fact that the main character is a divine dragon, that´s so crazy
Good to see rings aren't locked to characters

"Why not both?"
"Are you... Serious sir?"
"Did I stutter?"
My only problem is Toothpastes hair looks ugly.
Definitely a dragon racial thing though. The Silver haired girl also had black streaks and I bet she's from the central area.
I feel like the Crest hair would look better if they were wearing black outfits instead of white
5:30 Everything changed when the Colgate nation attacked.
This is TMS 2 without the SMT
Lyn is the rep because she is the first character you see in fe7 ;3
That and I’m pretty sure they wanted an even gender split. Either way I like it, she’s much more interesting than Eliwood imo
@@danielsimmich1858 also… it could actually be a hint to why we never see her character in FE6 lorewise (obviously she wasn’t created as a character yet in FE6, but still I think they’re playing around with the lore on this one) regardless it will be quite a nostalgic thrill to my heart to see Lyn and Eirika again, and to see them beautifully animated and voice acted will be worth every penny. I have a feeling a dark revelation awaits us for the truth behind Lyn’s disappearance, and her emblem ghost may share that revelation to us. But this is only speculation, it is always fun to let the imagination run wild before we know for certain what the next fire emblem games have in store for us XD
Also another thing I noticed, the official trailer video for fire emblem on Nintendo’s channel is labeled as Fire Emblem 7. Either they’re just honoring the anniversary of the first global entry to the series, or it was an intentional hint.
Me holding a Pepsi in front of my switch: ENGAGE!
The gimmick of the 12 heroes was alluded to in past games. It might have been the earliest in the timeline of the series but I don't remember. They never mentioned who the 12 heroes were but it's where the different emblems came from via hereditary genes. I'm going off memory so please forgive me if I am incorrect or misremembering. This game appears to be the continuation of that story that was alluded to in the past. Also I think those small fort looking things are actually stores. That's what they looked like in past games.
Ur thinking of Geneology where 12 crusaders in the ancient past beat up Loptyr after making blood pacts with several divine dragons. Sigurd is a descendent of one of them, Baldr
I'm a complete Ike fanboy... Getting him back means this is going to be day 1 buy and constantly replayed for me

@@vivil2533 exactly what I was hoping! Such a good arc. I remember squealing getting to play as him!
@@vivil2533 if we get Villain rings, it’ll be really interesting to see the dynamic of those villains. Coz some are straight up evil, whereas other villains are more ‘corrupted’ or whatever. Like would Lyon be willingly aiding the villain/s of this game or would he be controlled by his ring?
It's going to be a regression to Fates/Awakening story quality. fml
Great we got another 🌽
Can't wait to be disappointed at the same sex male romance options LOL
Jokes aside, I'm conflicted but fairly excited.
I hope there are more options, because I've had my disappointments in the past trying to pair same sex characters, I just hope there aren't too many options too, making everyone a possibility might be too much lol.
I mean if Ike is in the game then it might be possible to romance him as a male? (That’s assuming both that romance is in the game AND that the ring characters will be romanceable). But yeah male romance options in FE are always lacking (I’m still bitter Claude wasn’t Bi)
@@danielsimmich1858 can you romance ring-thingy ghosts? I doubt it...
I'm not against the idea though...
@@M0D776 idk aye. Personally, I’m not pushing for it (but I’m not pushing for romance in general in FE). All I know is IF we can romance the ring characters, imo Ike, Lyn, Corrin and Byleth should all be same gender options
@@M0D776 I was referring to same sex options for the male player character, but yes gay male ships are always a good thing to see for other characters too.
I highly doubt they’d skip romance for this game. The four things that have made Fire Emblem explode in popularity in recent years are the characters, supports, fan service, and romances (both for the player and among other units). Would be an enormous marketing misstep to not have romance in this game.
Why does lucina have a bow and sigurd has a lance? Because they relized they fucked up and made too many sword protagonists. And now for weapon variety they have to be a bit more creative
And I like Arrow Lucina in Heroes.
So strange that they chose eirika over ephraim if they needed more weapon variety. Or Lyn over Hector.
@@Plasticsoldier64 Because other than the weapons they also realised they mostly have male main characters. Even those games where there's both, it's usually a guy that is "the" main character.
Marth, Sigurd (could have picked his son, but that's still a guy. Sigurd's probably the oldest of the 12 though, so a bit more diversity here as well?), Leif, Roy, Ike are solo male protagonists. Micaiah is the only solo female protagonist (since Ike already got his own slot).
Between the avatars, they probably didn't wanna pick 2 guys or 2 girls (we all know there would be people complaining if they did).
Thus they picked Celica over Alm, Lyn over Eliwood/Hector, Eirika over Ephraim, and Lucina over Chrom (and no Robin because unlike Corrin and Byleth, who are "the" protagonist, Robin is "just" the player's avatar).
And voilà, 6 guys and 6 girls :D
Though it's left to be seen if those really are the only 12 or if there'll be some more.
Ike use his Father Axe.

I thought you guys said toothpaste-Chan leak was fake. I’m still pretty iffy on this premise, but we’ll see how the Jojo stands affects the gameplay; but right now it looks like fire emblem’s Xenoblade 2.
That is... concerningly accurate.
My biggest fear is gender specific rings. So far, we have only seen same gendered pairings. FIRE EMBLEM NEEDS TO STOP GENDER LOCKING EVERYTHING! Like I feel like it would be ridiculous for the female main character to not be able to combine with Marth, but we don't know
I think in the trailer we could see one of the female characters with Sigurd's ring, I doubt they are gender locking them. There's just not enough info present right now.
With Fire Emblem Fates, it at least seemed like they were considering to start moving away from gender locking with a male pegasus rider. Sadly, said male pegasus rider was not very good.
Gender locked stuff is so wack. The fact that you can’t make a female brawler in Three Hopes because of the gender restrictions is absurd

Everyone is talking about the characters, story and graphics, so I'll talk about the Logo!
I also feel like it's too bland, all games have had the logo to be the "Fire Emblem" text consistent and then the subtitle with stylized text, so seeing FE Engage's logo was kind of boring lol, if it was more stylized would've been cool, maybe make the "a" in Engage be a Ring? idk graphics design isn't my passion, but it mildly annoys me.
That might still change. I think the first 3 Houses Logo was also bland and then changed in later trailers.

It’d odd that they chose Male Byleth… since female was revealed to be the canon version…
I mean chances are that Corrin and Byleth can swap between versions, but it’s an odd continuity error
Exciting tho!!!
I thought there is no official canon version of avatars, when did they reveal that? or is that just cuz she was the only one in the cover of 3 hopes
There really is no 'canon' version of the avatars. I think they used female Byleth on the cover and trailers of 3 Hopes because they used male Shez when marketing and wanted to have a bit of diversity on the cover?
@@dreamingahopefuldream4439 I think that, plus female byleth is more popular in the community? So ig it makes more sense, oh and also male byleth was used in most promotional footage of Three houses right? So that could also be it fr
Pretty sure they wanted to avoid the 12 heroes to be too repetitive, so they went with an even gender split, while still going with one male and one female avatar. From my experience, male Corrin doesn't seem very popular, while for female Byleth opinions seem very split on her outfit. Lots of people love her, while (probably fewer, but still) many hate her clothes. So the other two seem like the "safer" picks.
Ike with the axe, Lucina with the bow and Sigurd with the lance is also probably so we have some diversity in weapon types, though Sigurd was still shown with a sword later.

I dont know how you can go back to the Fire emblem games after playing games like triangle strategy, where the combat, story and everything is done so much better.
Hot take, I think the art style looks garbage and hard to look at in Triangle Strategy. Plus every new RPG seems to be trying to use it now and it doesn't feel as special anymore
FE will always work because at its core its pretty simple and easy to get into. That and they're getting much better at 3d model animations since Echoes and they look 10x more dynamic than what sprites + a shit ton of flashy effects can do lol

As for the simplicity of FE....yeah, that's what makes it have a broader appeal, its more accessible for newer players.... but that wasn't my point. My point is after you have been playing these strategy games for a while and have played games with more advanced combat systems like Triangle strategy and Tactics ogre... how can you go back to something that is so much more shallow like the FE series. Another year of disappointment where a remake of GHW does not exist. Instead we got Toothpaste...
This game literally confirms Genealogy, probably later in the year.
@@westonmeyer3110 That model of Sigurd brought a tear to my eye. But even still, i just can't believe.

No, I mean the existence of this game literally confirms Genealogy.
This game was literally leaked alongside of a mention of a Genealogy remake. It‘s coming.
@@westonmeyer3110 Oh... Well, I guess i can wait 2 more years for a true masterpiece to come.
@@InternetPeopleAreNotReal
It could come out next year.
That would explain the January release date for Engage.
I dislike the style used in FE 17, its not as gritty as in FE 3H
Fire emblem died today...
It's fine if you don't end up liking the game (I don't like Shadow Dragon), but it's an over-exaggeration to say the series is permanently ruined. At least the Fire Emblem developers do SOMETIMES listen to criticism.
What part of “30th anniversary game” do you not understand?
@@tidepoolclipper8657 its a good thing they dont listen to stuff from people like that. Am I right
Whenever random internet kids said something dies = Successfull commercially with active playerbase.
For what is supposed to be a celebration of the 30th Anniversary, this sure does feel like a slap in the face to the FE community. Everything just seems like a downgrade from previous games: the choice to take inspiration from Tokyo Mirage Session, putting Heroes front and center, the absolute garbage designs, and just an overall visually displeasing game.
I pre-ordered all non-collab limited edition versions of the games in the past and have been playing since Fire Emblem (now Blazing Blade) was released in the US. It's a shame, but I'm definitely going to be skipping this one.
Too soon to decide bro
@@lorenzopiva9322 it does look pretty bad though…
But I suppose three houses first trailer made it look like a medieval high school dating simulator so we may be wrong.
Everyone said three houses would be a high school dating Sim at first.

@@Plasticsoldier64 Three houses didn't have an actual clown as the MC. Nothing the devs do can save such a terrible design.
