  • This video explains how composite models and calculation groups work together. Indeed, they might show a very unique behavior that a good DAX developer must understand well to build sound models.

Thanks for highlighting this... hadn't seen it documented anywhere before, a bit of a surprise

Thank you for your once again great explanations!
I also found a highly interesting constraint in re-using Format Expressions defined in Calculation Groups. It seems like even just DEFINING format expressions in Remote models and trying to create another completely independent format string expression immediately makes the whole composite model unrefreshable. It looks like some hidden measure format strings are created in the remote model AND AGAIN for the remote model in the local composite model. Ending up in duplicate measure names - at least when created in Tabular Editor...
This is a huge constraint, as I love working with format expressions allowing some user-friendly switching in changing the displayed content (from numbers to percentages to currencies for example). A use case is the typical Management Dashboard, which pulls data out of remote sources directly
Unfortunately I was not able to overcome this yet. If your valuable time allows, I would love to hear your thoughts on that and maybe even hear concepts for a workaround.
    Thanks again, Alex

Hey Alberto! Thank you so much for this explanation, I've been trying to figure out Calculation Groups and it has been a bit of a mess. Can you please help me with my question? I have a composite model and I've defined Calculation Groups at a local level. These work fine with retail measures (getting values from the model + local table) but it breaks my wholesale queries that use only the model. It gives the error "The value for ASDQ_MyMeasure cannot be determined. Either the column doesn't exist, or there is no current row for this column." Notice that "ASDQ_" is not part of the name of my measure and this is happening even if I'm not using the Calculation Groups in my visualization. Any idea of what might be happening?

Alberto, this was great explanation as always!
Also interested in the scenario where calculation groups are defined in the local model. I suspect that there will be a lot of differences
Will it flow to the remote model?

Take a look at the article using the link in the description. Basically, the calculation groups defined in the local model works usually well.
