Thank you for showing what can go wrong. Please do an update.
I had a very similar experience with my strawberries and root rot. Some hydrogen peroxide did help and eventually the roots grew back white. It did slow the growth of the plant, but it did recover. I noticed a significant increase in growth when I added an air stone to my “Aerogarden”.
what kind of airstone?
@Riaz0987 I assume the kind that blows bubbles. I'm not sure of the width of his aerogarden, but I'd imagine if you can get a long airstone the length of you aerogarden that would be ideal.
I grew cannabis and added a capful of peroxide with each water change. I also used two air stones and occasionally trimmed the roots.
Just planted strawberry seeds in some soil and I was thinking of doing hydroponics. Now that I saw your video I will definitely try it.
Incredible! I bought some white strawberries to try but ive put it off because I was told it could take years to get a berry. You proved them wrong, youve inspired me to finally try them out in my next grow.
I needed this video! Would love to see you try again
I love you videos! Thank you for sharing your tips!
Thanks ill try the same way now
Adorable kid
I love your experiments! Thank you for this ;)
thats incredible
Wow very informative vedio. Thanks for sharing. New supporter here. Watching from South Korea
I’m going to catch a new runner off our strawberries and bring one in to try!!!
Nice. 🌹🌹🌹
I was able to get from seed to berry in 50 days using alpine strawberry seeds from Renee's Garden. I'm growing in a standard Farm 24 unit. I am struggling with tip burn on my leaves though. I've been using half-strength Masterblend but I think I need to tinker with the nutes a bit.
Master Blend is great! I haven’t thought about doing half strength, but it makes sense to start out.
Yes, please do an AG strawberry update.
I didn't see it in the comments but you could try inoculating them with a nice mycorrizae blend something with a glomulus strain in it, that should help support the roots in the face of many common infections. Thanks for the great video.
Thanks deeply for sharinG another challenginG experiment for Humanity to Benefit from!👍We gardeners rarely give up because it's thinGs like root rot that help uS to become stronger gardeners with lots of wisdom!👍I might try to grow some strawberries in my Aerogarden kiD but I can't say for sure!👍HaVe a wonderful week fellow Aerogarden LovVer!✌😀🙏😇🌹🌞🌹🍓🍓🍓🌹☕🍵☕
yeah, we just keep trying until we succeed.
I grow flower seeds in my aerogarden and once they have a nice root system I pot them up . Later on as they grow in the pots , I transplant them into the ground. They grow perfectly well that way . I'm pretty sure the strawberries would be the same . They are a hardy plant here in my garden even in the ice and snow . I think your strawberries have been sitting in water far too long . It's worth a try.
I hope to see you try this one out again! I’m tempted, having strawberries would be the best. I think your main issue was having too much moisture around the roots. I wonder if you would get better results if you were to turn off the pump and add and air stone. I’m curious about nutrients for strawberries as well
yeah, I am trying it again with different combinations. I will let you know with my updates.
Cool I’m new sub
Hello my friend,
another year and another growing season is upon us. I think this will make a good starter method but not long term (grow until good root development and then transfer to upside-down pot)
I am going to plant strawberries, blackberries and some more stuff.
I use a fish tank bubbler to oxygenate the water to stop root rot
Hi I really like your videos. I would love to see you try this strawberry experiment again! I am going to try... alpine everbearing seeds, 2 plants in a Harvest, no pruning (it seemed like your plants started to go downhill after the pruning?). I wonder if letting the water level drop off between waterings would help, eg wait an extra day after the unit says "add water" to add water?
Nice thoughts. Yeah, I will try it again soon.
I realize I’m late to this Video but I do know for what ever reason, strawberry plants are prone to root rot in Hydo. Hydro guard from Botanicare is a great product that can cure it and prevent it as well. I’ve used hydrogen peroxide with mixed results so I stuck with Hydroguard.
I used hydro guard in my recent strawberry experiment and still had no luck. 😞
@@aerogardenexperiments they actually do ALOT better in ebb and flow or NFT systems where their roots are not constantly suspended in a nutrient solution. If you happen to try an experiment in the future try adding a good air stone connected to air pump to the reservoir and see if it helps. 🤞
Do you plan to keep the strawberry plants in the aerogarden? I haven't been able to successfully replant my strawberries in soil.
What feed did you give your strawberries???
This was so helpful to see an example where you had to overcome some real challenges. I'm about to try strawberries from seed in my hydroponic system and I've read a lot about putting seeds in the fridge to help germinate but I noticed you didn't need to do this was that because of the variety you used?
Thanks. Yeah, I directly sowed in coco coir and it just worked fine. Keeping in fridge might also work as it works for many seeds.
I just planted some seeds I pulled from store bought strawberries. They sprouted without the stratification (puting them in the fridge) as well. I’m not sure if that’s just in general that it’s not required or if it’s because I keep my store bought strawberries IN the fridge. Perhaps that satisfied the stratification requirement. 🤷♀️
@@GrowingDreams
Interesting... did I understand you correctly, that you plucked the tiny seeds from store bought strawberries & placed in a grow sponge & they germinated or in wet paper towels ??? 🤔
Good information, thanks for making the video! Also have you had success just putting the seed directly into the aerogarden
Yes I had success putting seeds directly into Aerogarden. However, the germination rate is extremely low and it took lot of time (~3 weeks) .
Sounds good, thank you for the replay!
I agree on my experience with the grow anything pods and planting my own strawberries. It seems much more effective to germinate them elsewhere (either in coco coir or with the paper towel method).
I wonder if you might want to try trimming your root systems down earlier? I’ve heard that you can trim them every 2-4 weeks depending on the plant and what the roots look like. It’s my understanding that it helps transfer more growth up to the plant. I trim my greens and herbs regularly and have had good success so far but maybe for fruiting plants it’s different?
Trimming the roots can actually bring root rot on quicker. The pythium is attracted to the “damage” caused by the trimming. Root rot is typically overcome by: 1. having strong, adult plants in the first place 2. Changing the water more frequently 3. Adding an agent to combat the root rot (like hydrogen peroxide or some other items), 4. Adding an air stone. Kratky (no air stone) is better for shorter-lived plants. Longer growing plants can work in Kratky-like system, but shorter-liver are better for “Kratky”
@@GrowingDreams
I've trimmed my plants roots ever since I have been using the Bounty Elite system, Sept. of 2022... I never heard of nor read where anyone said to trim or not to trim. I did it after I saw how bound with other roots they were getting, and bc they were surrounding the pump which made it difficult to breathe freely... I have trimmed "massive" amts... I'm talking massive! Some roots were over 12 inches. I trimmed all down to about 3". It never hurt any of them. In fact they grew much better. Never had root rot or any such thing but I did make a point to change the water & sanitize each garden 1-2 times a month, (at every 2nd then 4th feedings)! I used foam bleach to sanitize the entire garden, top & bottom with a THOROUGH final rinse. I also rinsed off the roots really well. I have never attempted to grow strawberries which might be a different story... but I plan to as soon as I can find the right seeds & space. Also after trimming I did move some plants around to different locations or holes. I have never lost 1 plant to root rot but I have had abt 6 AG pods over a span of time to not germinate. That's to be expected... not all seeds I buy in the store germinate 100% . I love my Aero gardens & as of rt now I have 5 Bounty Elites. Love love love them. ❤
I'm growing Albion strawberries in my Aerogarden. I've planted them at the end of August 2021. They're doing great, really lush & full, but they have sent out so many runners. I have 2 strawberry plants in my 3 pod Aerogarden & they've sent out 12 runners & no flowers. Should I cut off some or all of the runners? I've tried researching it but can only find info on plants being grown in dirt & I feel like that info doesn't pertain to these. There are no signs of parasites or mold. The roots look fantastic. I had 3 plants but the roots went bad on one of them so I quickly removed it.
Runners are used to make new plants. I don't see any use of them in Aerogarden. Fruits will be coming on main plants only. So, you can safely remove runners from the main plants in Aerogarden.
Did you ever get full size strawberries? Or was this strain of strawberry a smaller berry? Mine seem to be stagnating and not fully pollinating (even when I use the tooth brush or make up brush techniques).
This variety produces only small berries. For pollination, try a paint brush and try to spread the pollen.
That’s great, do you have to water each and everyday?? After planting seeds?
We just have to keep the soil moist. Maybe spray some water every 2-3 days.
@@aerogardenexperiments okay thank you
I wonder if there is a nutrient out there that helps more with blooming/fruit bearing stages? Have you searched the Aerogarden facebook groups to see what others use in their Aerogarden strawberries? Thanks for the super detailed video!!!
As far as I read, lot of people use either AG nutes in Aerogardens or master blend in DIY hydroponic systems.
u can use flora series or fox grow big works great with strawberrys also u might tey root crowns for everbearing
Nutrients are the problem. Don't add any. At this stage no nutrients should be added. High nutrient concentration will kill strawberries.
@@paulglover6525 so no nutrients once see flowers ?
@@paul8093 Yes.
You have root rot use hydrozyme next time Only 2 plants and change your water more often No pruning like you did because you put your plants into shock
Thank you very much for lot of great tips.
Sorry to ask I’m new to all this but what is hydrozyme?? I’ve never had the root rot issue but always trying to learn new things
What nutrients are you using and how much. ?
I am using only Aerogarden nutrients and I use 8ml every 14 days as I see the indicator. I got so many strawberries from day ~120.
I was trying this had them started but like stopped at like 2 inches. I contacted aero garden for help they told me it would take at least 5 years to flower and even longer to get berries
Hmm that's surprising and that's wrong in my experience. May be that's the case for some varieties. I have grown alpine strawberries twice so far and I got strawberries from day ~100.
@@aerogardenexperiments well looks like I’ll be trying this again. Thank you.
My experience was also about 4-5 months to fruit. Not years. I also dealt with root rot at one point, so very similar grow. I did not prune mine as often. I added an air stone to one Aerogarden and one did not have an air stone. The one with the air stone grew significantly quicker. So that might be a good experiment.
Did you hand pollinate the flowers?
No, I didn't have to. But if you don't see any development, you can use a paint brush and rub on the flowers touching the center. Strawberry flowers doesn't require cross pollination.
how did you pollinate the strawberries
Strawberry flowers are complete flowers. You don't need another plant or a flower to pollinate. Just rub the flower with a paint brush gently or give the plant a little shake.
Was it worth growing strawberries in aerogarden? And did you harvest a lot of strawberries ?
It's definitely worth, if no issues. Root rot issue continued for me and I had to transfer the plants to outside garden. But if we manage to grow successfully it's definitely worth, in my opinion, especially compared to the store bought strawberries.
Is it possible to grow and keep blueberries in AeroGarden?
I don't think so. Blueberry plants like dry soil and takes really long. Of course, I never tried so I can't speak a lot.
that root problem is common without an air stone when you dont use the aerogarden brand nutrients, i dont know why.
But if youre using AG brand, then start watching PH.
strawberries dont like the typical PH of most plants and should be monitored.
Do you think an air stone would help oxinate the water and roots?
Yeah, airstone should definitely help a bit. I also think that I should have grown in only 4 pods. Less is always better.
Got it. My aerogarden will arrive tomorrow. I also bought strawberry seeds. I also bought the Grow Anything kit for Aerogarden. Do I need to start by using the Styrofoam cups or can I just use the Grow Anything kit to start?
Peteolane, You could start with the pods. However, the benefit of the cup is you can control how many sprouts you have per pod. If you place seeds into the pod to sprout you with either have to 1. Sow 4-5 seeds to ensure germination or 2. Pluck up extra seedlings that sprout. 3. Try one at a time to see if it sprouts and try again if not.
I used some seeds off store-bought strawberries as an experiment. They did sprout but took over a month to do so. So even doing the one at a time, depending on the seeds, it might take longer to sprout than expected and you may end up with a number of seedlings competing that you then have to thin. Some thoughts.
I seen someone else video have the same problem and used more nutrients the recommended is not enough
Interesting... I actually heard that strawberries take very less nutrients. I am going to experiment soon.
I brought some everbearing seascape strawberries and their dying like idk what could be causing this
hmm.. maybe something wrong with the product itself.
What variety of strawberries were those?
It's called Regina. Rareseeds used carry this variety but I am not seeing it anymore.
@@aerogardenexperiments Interesting. I tried growing strawberries indoors, but they did not grow well under the lights I had & then they got fungus & died. I googled & there is a variety called "Sweet Charlie" that is supposed to be disease resistant & does not need a dormant period during a frozen winter. But I just moved into an even smaller apartment, so have not tried it yet.
@@aerogardenexperiments BTW, I think you might need a larger setup. Strawberry plants can grow up to 2 feet (2/3 meter) and send out runners 6 to 12 feet long (2 to 4 meters).
hydrogen peroxide will help the root rot you might want to try hydroguard
just saw now u added h202
Lol I was going recommend hydrogen peroxide but u mention it as I was thinking
Thank you for the tips and recommendations. I will follow them next time.
Or use hydroguard
Thanks again.
Have you tried growing strawberries from root stock? It’s the easiest way to get strawberries from an aerogarden and I made a growing guide here:
ruclips.net/video/QSrrh_O2pXc/видео.html
You added to much nutrient. At a certain stage before flowering they need only water. High nutrient dosage will kill strawberries.
Thank you. I will try again with low nutrients.
