The bit where Simon gets beaten up after Jay jokingly claims he's a paedophile felt like classic Inbetweeners.
One of the running gags throughout the series is Simon suffering the consequences of Jay's behaviour (e.g. getting choked out in the "bus wankers" scene), or just suffering after following his awful advice (e.g. having a "tactical wank" before sleeping with Tara).

I liked the movies from a comedy perspective, but you made valid points about each character's payoff at the end of the movie. I like that the writers wanted to give the characters their wins in the end, but it could've been done differently. The heart of the original show was in the melancholy endings and having to learn the hard way about the world; 30 minute episodes is the ideal format for that.Transitioning to film, this was always going to be a big blockbuster sex comedy. You need big payoffs in films that you don't need to have in sitcoms.

Great video! Agree with a lot of your thoughts. Just quickly, hilarious scenes you didn't mention from each movie:
    1) When getting ready for their first night out Will "secretly" kisses the teddy bear he brought.
    2) The "rape alarm" scene where Will did absolutely nothing wrong and you can add to that his campfire singing which is iconic 😂❤

Inbetweeners 2 should have been based in the UK and focused on uni/jobs.
    Will in a prestigious uni.
Simon in a post-92, not so fancy uni.
Neil in an apprenticeship but doing well.
Jay unemployed or in a menial job.
It could have explored the 1st year of uni experiences of Simon and Will trying to introduce their new friends to their old friends. So many dynamics could have happened there and it would have felt relatable to its core audience. Maybe Simon's mates are lovely and get on well with Jay, maybe Neil gets on surprsingly well at Will's uni and this makes Will jealous. It could have been a great movie about British uni culture, feeling left out and wanting to be part of it all (Jay's case) or just getting on with the world of work and being fulfilled and happy (Neil's case). So many good jokes could have been made.
I think the 2nd one just strayed a bit too far narratively despite some funny jokes.
I really strongly feel not showing them properly in post 6th form education or employment is the biggest missed opportunity the writers made.

I actually was expecting them to die at the end of the second movie. There's an older British sitcom called The Young Ones that also follows a gang of four boys and may have inspired the Inbetweeners somewhat, and no joke, that show ends with all of them dying in a bus crash.

Well, they did survive a plane crashing on top of them, and Vyvyan did get decapitated, so I don't think we should rule out their survival from exploding in a bus crash 😆

I haven't watched the movies as many times as the tv episodes, but they are still good entertainment. Perhaps it should have finished with the first movie, but there was a demand for a second. I'm glad it got made, just for Will running away from Mr Gilbert at the end!

I think the 2nd movies exists purely because the creators didn't want the American remake to be the last thing people remember from the inbetweeners brand.

21:53 yeah this is a great point about how the movies are shot, has a completely different vibe to the tv show & it feels off. The first movie is meh & the ending is awful but the second is truly atrocious, I haven’t watched it in years & couldn’t remember anything about it. Forgettable garbage.

As much as I like the first film over the second one because of it having a more realistic scenario for boys who would finish their Leaving Cert and go to Lanzarote with their friends and shit than the second did, I always felt that the film would have been elevated much higher, if there was an underlying emotional throughline about the education system protecting the boys that would add to the story of them meeting these girls and the real ones who send them down the right path and not Carli or Mr Gilbert or their parents.
As it stands however, I still like the general aurora of the film being a second chance for the four boys after all of the shit that they went through in the television series. When they arrive in Malia and they end up in a shit apartment, it looks like that more shit will come their way. Them being tricked by the season worker at the bar and then meeting the girls, plants the seeds into them healing and despite the hiccups, it's very lucky for them (especially Jay) that the girls give them a second chance on the boat. If Damon Beesley and Ian Morris left it there then the ending of the girls meeting the boys' parents would have been more than enough of an indication for me that they're going to be fine as they already lost their V cards so the journey of them helping each other improve would've been a fun thing for the audience to imagine in their own time.

Really well done video and great analysis. I do like the first movie and while I understand your points about the endings for the characters I do feel like in a movie setting and especially after all theyve been through in the series it felt like they needed their happy endings eventually, even if they werent handled the best. Definitely agree on the second film though, its a bit of a mess and while bits of it are funny a lot of it was shoehorned in and you could tell it was sort of rushed out as the demand at the time was enormous for it. Its definitely a product of 2014 as well. In any case, great vid 👍
