On the Alcan about half way all the sudden the motor just cut off for no reason it seemed... We looked at each other and coasted to a stop. The dual 3 inch exhaust pipes that exited just ahead of the rear wheels on both sides were packed with mud! A long screwdriver pecked it out and ran like a dream rest of the trip. We wrote post cards in August at 11pm with no lights on. Made it all the way back towards Detroit and had a blowout on the left rear in the left lane going thru Chicago at rush hour. Had to dig out the spare from all the other stuff in the van. Made it home and I still got the pics to prove it!

Well, I had to look it up. The Joseph R. Smallwood ferry was actually named “The Joseph R. and Clara Smallwood”. Joseph was a former premier of one of the provinces and Clara was his wife. The ship was in service from 1989-2011. (For Clara’s sake let’s hope Joe didn’t have a small wood).

I grew up in Cordova and it was nice to see it again via the "blue canoe". When I finally left Alaska I took the Kennicott to the Lower 48. Thanks for the memories.
I can't even imagine how terrible it would be living in Alaska. I grew up in Illinois, and after my military hitch was over I relocated to Florida. 48 years later I am still here. In all those years I've only seen snow 1 time. And it was gone the next day. You can have the snow, gray skies and dirty snow on the side of the road in June. I'll keep the sunshine, blue skies, and warm weather year around.

@@420_Logan Actually depending on where in Alaska you pick, Minnesota can be a lot colder and more brutal. As a matter of fact, most companies/businesses in Alaska are very discerning when it comes to hiring people from the lower 48. If you have lived your life in N Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc they are more likely to hire you. There are many people from the lower 48 who have romantic ideas about Alaska but once winter hits and they haven't seen the sun for over a month, slipped on the ice, and winter is just getting started...those people book a plane out of Alaska and never return.
Have you ever taken the SS Badger across Lake Michigan? It used to be able to carry RR cars. Last coal fired steam ship in N America I think. Rode it 2018.
@@johnscherf1228 I rode that one, too. Actually I did that one first going into Michigan. I asked the lady there about the other ferry. She said, "oh, that's THE Badger." So I visited the maritime museum in Muskegon, Sand Dunes in Ludington, and maritime museum in Manitowoc. That was the week of the Ludington tornado.

I also forgot to mention - any intelligent owner would subscribe cheaply to those websites that look people up. 25$ for an inquiry is a rip off!!!!!
@@CK61380 He is also a vet with a millitary pension and he also paying for his existing place .Everybody needs a break its unreal how people judge others.People go threw hardship and recover or choose a lifestyle that does always make them bad people.
What a clean ship. Like to take a trip on her. I really liked your video Shoestring.
Polished floors that's for sure!
That's why I love ships because the hands keep everything "ship shape".... passed down the line with time
@@TheHoboShoestring Good swabbies on Deck, ha, ha!
Thanks Ho Bo from the comfort of my living room in Philadelphia, pa.its beautiful.
Shoestring definitely has something in life figured out. Great channel!

Absolutely beautiful Shoestring..Thank uou for taking us along on another incredible adventure..I wish you good luck in finding a permanent place up there...you deserve to be happy like that all the time..Safe travels back to Tennessee my friend..HUGE..HUGE L&R And Thank You again!
"I'm glad I came here for just this".
Just found you Shoestring, and I can say the same thing. You're an amazing creature. The first video I watched you were sitting outside the Flathead tunnel in WY...no beard...and just spent the last 3.5 hours watching other videos of yours. Hope you're well. The world needs more people like you.
I love your stories...thanks for just talking about your history and memories...
My grandfather used to sing me that popeye song 😂 along with, "A peanut sat on a railroad track, his heart in all a flutter... Along came the choo-choo train.... TOOT TOOT peanut butterrr" 🤣 good stuff
I've taken the Newfoundland ferry lots of times ....I'm from Ontario Canada and decided to take a trip to Newfoundland and loved it so much I stayed there for 10 years!! Safe travels my friend!!
You give the meaning of acceptance to a higher level. Good luck with whatever makes you happy.
It's funny Mark, and all, I noticed when you came in off the deck, you wiped your boots. That alone speaks volumes. You're a good man.
You do better than the History Channel when it comes to videos
I can just sit and watch these for hours man I love your videos so much
I Live near Bellingham and was going to check and see how much it would cost to take the ferry but now I don't have too. lol
It is a pleasure to watch your videos. Thank you for sharing!
I wish you had 'super thanks' , it'd be nice to send you a couple bucks for a beer or coffee. Anyways, thanks for sharing your knowledge and adventures with us.
I felt like I was on that ferry with you taping it!!! Awesome
This brings back memories of when I was in the Coast Guard and made the run from San Diego to Alaska. Tks for sharing.
How cool to have a ferry to yourself for this trip especially in these C-19 times. Appreciate all the local commentary and history that you provide.
Your memory is spot on. You remember highway and ferry names like you were there this morning. Shit I can't remember what I had for dinner last night. You're a great guide. Haze Gray and Underway
❤ miss you Shoestring.
Fantastic yet again Shoestring- - been on many ferries in the UK over to France and visiting the Scottish Islands. Always enjoy being outside watching the sea passing by.
As they say better to have tried and failed to have never tried at all and who knows maybe next time you maybe successful in finding a place there fingers crossed 🤞, and at least you have had a good trip , seen some good sights and brought us some amazing content so thank you my friend.
for Cordova, Google maps says that site is on "Cannery Road" but has a bunch of adventure sites like whale watching
Holy Smokes that was a beautiful trip!
Thanks for the upload my brother. Looking forward to the next adventure 😎
Shoe string love your show keep up the good work
Anyone else jump when that microwave dinged? Haha
Worth the trip! Keep your spirits high, Shoestring. You’ll be back.
Shoestring what an amazing video!! Thank you so much for taking us along. I was a commercial salmon fisherman on a Purse Seiner back in the 70's. Traveled from Washington to Southeastern Alaska many time.
Makes me happy to hear you say... I'm happy.
Your eyes are sparkly and twinkling ✨🤩. I’m happy for you. I pray you can find a nice place to live
I miss ya Shoestring.
His life was hard. But on his terms
Excellent video as always Shoestring. Thanks for taking us along on your adventures!
Watching his videos is like being in on a " True Life Adventure!"
Canadian Province - Nova Scotia is Home to Alexander Graham Bell Museum on Cape Briton Island.
Great video ,that ship is pristine clean ,beautifull ! Compared to the hardships you routinely endure that ship prtobably felt like the Hilton! God Bless brother.
Nothing like living in a place where it snows 18 months a year
The snow is awesome and I will miss it! However the months of below zero I won't miss!
pretty on video but couldn't live somewhere so cold were i dont want to leave the house.enjoy wearing shorts year round.left northeast day after graduation.
Aging + moving to closer proximity to a north or south pole = misery
@@Lt_Tragg your right i moved to Florida and love the weather.people are another issue but can't have everything.i get cold watching shoestring.
@@Lt_Tragg
I'm truly already missing the pollen... lol
Going back to Tennessee soon.
What beautiful cold raw water and landscape. Thanks Shoestring! I lived on Whidby Island for a while. Some similarity
Another good job bro, that 5 dayer sounds like fun. It’s 5 days of videos, that would keep you busy. Any 5 days mask free at sea sounds good. Be safe. Medicine Hat.
I'll keep the sunshine, blue skies, and warm weather year around.
not only is florida the best for weather in the usa... only state with no snow... plus ouyr beaches, and crystal clear spring fed rivers and creeks... but for lock downs and shit florida is the best.... i love florida
@@chronicawareness9986 Not to mention Alaska's 10 month winter. No thanks, the month of January in Florida is all the cold I want to live with.
@@thebusterdog921 I grew up in Connecticut. Live in Perth, Western Australia now. We are going into Winter where it drops to 4C on a cold night. That will do me! I love Summer. The cold keeps out pussies like me and maintains a high standard of people living there who are tough!
Not Alaska but the Minnesota winters made me tough lol!
I truly enjoyed this video!! Thank you and God Bless you!!
Have you ever taken the SS Badger across Lake Michigan? It used to be able to carry RR cars. Last coal fired steam ship in N America I think. Rode it 2018.
Lake Express from Milwaukee, WI to Muskegon, MI. and the other way around beat Chicago traffic!
@@johnscherf1228 I rode that one, too. Actually I did that one first going into Michigan. I asked the lady there about the other ferry. She said, "oh, that's THE Badger." I didn't understand the significance until I got to Ludington. I camped at Sand Dunes for 3 cold and wet days that August. So I visited the maritime museum in Muskegon, Sand Dunes in Ludington, and maritime museum in Manitowoc. That was the week of the Ludington tornado.
Talk about lifting your Spirits! Just watching this video I feel more comfortable with my own inherent wanderlusts. At almost 72 yrs. old with a humble-purse "watching" is about the only way I wander these days. The Vagabond lifestyle is where it's at!!!!!!
SHROOM SAYS; Couldn't sleep woke up to a Shoestring ADVENTURE. Stay dry and warm.
Great video. Much fun going on these rides. Thanks.
Shoestring..they have found boxcars of illeagals on the trains down by border..imagine they will be tightening things up because of the crisis on the border...have a good ride..its same temp and we got snow in mt last night
I don't know but it's like somebody high (up in the goverment) doesn't know what to do? Did you see how packed freight trains riders are in Mexico. It looks like the old Depression days where Hobos were stopped from entering California!
It's amazing the memory you have! Incredible to me! I forget what I did ten minutes ago!
That Otter is as happy in that cold water as you are on a train.. lol. That boat is nice. Not very many people on it was there ?
I'm sitting here on the east coast of Australia marvelling at the beautiful scenery of Alaska. What an adventure!
Very good feeling good luck will come your way ... ✝️
Man you have a memory! Wow! Thanks fo sharing you memories, Shoestring.
15:20 “I haven’t been this happy since... a long time.” That’s all that matters, brother!
I loved that Shoestring just blurted out his feelings! He’s following a dream. Keep going Shoestring!
It looks like a Landlubber is enjoying the Sea. It's an amazing feeling the first time at sea where you cant see land! I am really glad I had a chance to experience it one time. The next best thing is riding a freight from Roseville to Reno or from Denver to Ogden.
When they say ship shape that means this ship, amazing how clean it is.
