    I googled so many ways of making a mask, and found yours to be the best Liz. I've even bought a sewing machine after years of not putting "foot to peddle" ;) This latest hack with the shorter card makes so much sense. I love your videos, so clear and easy to follow. Thank you Liz :) I have masks!! Taaah Daaah !!

    I think I will love this pleat hack! I'm making masks with a front cotton panel and anti-pill fleece for the back panel. The thickness made my pleats impossible to get pretty. Thank you for the original video and the new hack. I made multiple masks yesterday for my elderly family members.

    I'm a terrible seamstress, wonky stitches and everything, but I continue to make your masks -- I can make 1 a day! HA! "Stay-Home" orders keep me at home and I have something else to keep me occupied! I've used ribbons, thin and wide. I finally found thin elastic and that makes the best for looping over the ears. I used pipe cleaners for the nose because that's all I could find in my craft drawers. When I washed it, it wadded up on one end, so now I center the pipe cleaner and sew each end to keep it from moving -- when I washed the new one -- it stayed put! YAY! Your tutorials are great! I watched it about 10 times before trying one. Thanks for putting it out there!

      Glad it helped! Personally, I try to get the pleats even on the front and don't really care what it looks like on the back. It all works out in the end. When you are making many at a time, it is really a time saver. Thanks so much for watching.

      Hi Liz, that is a great way to do pleats, but how wide is the mask after? It comes out too narrow. It's never been about making the pleats, it's getting them within 3" width without spending more time tweaking them. I can pleat my mask in a minute and it is within the 3" width needed.

    Hi Liz! Just broke my sewing machine out after years of no use. I love your videos! They are so helpful and helped me with mask making. My sewing is not he best so I’m just making for family and friends. I saw a video where the seamstress folded the mask in half (hot dog fold), got a crease, then folded it in half again to get a total of 4 creases. She then used the creases to align the pleats. It looked easy and they were definitely even. I didn’t try it. Was wondering if you ever tried that method? Just a thought. Thanks again for all of your help. I made the masks with the 30 inch elastic. They seem to fit better.

      Hi Cheryl
      Thank you so much. When it came to the pleats, and I was on my 2nd or 3rd mask, I was having more trouble keeping the pleats within 3" and fumbled way too much. My hack just evolved and I never tried any other way. I think I have seen the one you mentioned after I put out my video. I say try anything and do what works best for you, to get the job done. Stay safe.

    This hack accomplishes two things in one step...Even pleats within the desired width. It's never been about making the pleats, it's getting them within 3". No tweaking or adjusting each side to fit.

      Hi Joel, I use an old Singer industrial sewing machine. I also have a 17yr old Janome Quilters Companion. I prefer industrial, but it is straight stitch only so if I need zig zag, I use my Janome.

    Instead of going through this cumbersome pleat placement, wouldn’t it be more feasible to mark fabric for pleat folding (based on the results of this latest hack)? Clips and cardboard oh my! Thanks

    • @makingiteasywithliz
      @makingiteasywithliz  4 года назад

      It's not about the pleats themselves...It's getting the pleats within the required 3" width. I can get it pleated and the side pieces on in 1 minute. I crank these out very quickly, and consistently. It would take a minute just to mark them.

    • @canuck33
      @canuck33 4 года назад +1

      I totally understand it’s not for the pleats themselves but to end up with 3” measurement. I gave it up eventually because of having to use the binder clips and the manipulating - way too consuming for me . I ended up eyeballing it after the common pressing folds - much easier and ended up with the 3”. Thanks for the great video.

      The recommendation for these masks is to use two layers of closely woven cotton. Don't know where the filter idea came from. The point of these masks is so we don't expel droplets out from our mouth and nose. It's for other peoples protection. Not a good idea to use filter material from vacuum cleaners etc. which I heard. Who knows what's in that material. www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth-face-coverings.html

      You are absolutely correct and I am going to address this in my next video because people aren't understanding what the mask is really for. Thank you for sharing.

    • @SophieBird07
      @SophieBird07 4 года назад

      small footprint I hear you. I think the filter idea is to help just a bit more with what we also have to breathe in, like around people who do not wear masks? I use a layer of paper towel which I change out. I think it helps because I can’t smell as well with that layer inside, even tobacco. It’s not 95% I’m sure but it can’t hurt.

    Nice idea! Can I tell you, I added pleats by sight. After the first 5or so it read second nature. Now, lol nothing was perfect by all means. But im limited on time to stand sit etc and w hard pressed to get ads many done as possible to help meet The needs. If I'd listened to the HOLY SPIRIT and started a Cpl Cpl weeks sooner ( when They said no were don't want those homemade masks🤷‍♀️) I'd loved to do more precise work. Not that it was sloppy lolol by any means. Still! I did make a few fussy cut cute ones but it was quickly apparent that wasn't going to be the situation going forward. On a lil brake needing to listen to the body. I know so many die appreciate all your efforts😍

      Thank you Kathleen, for choosing my video. The trouble I had with the pleats was keeping them within 3". I was off on one end, then my side pieces didn't fit properly, with only a smidgen of fabric to fold over and they were too wonky. I can crank one out in a minute so I think that is pretty swift, without a lot of swearing lol. I have about 100 to get out this week, majority for ppl in the U.S., nurses and ppl working in hospitals. I have some nice fabric that I thought about fussy cutting and opted out of that haha. Keep up the good fight and stay well.

      I have a small face, and the 3" fits everyone, that I have made them for (over 300), great. 4" would probably give a little more coverage under the chin. Test it and see.

      UPDATE...I made a mask that was 1" larger 17"×8.5" and 4" wide. It's for a very large face for sure, way too big for me. Pleating the original size 4" wide would be for a longer face, or for a man. Because I don't tie off the elastic, but let the wearer do it, makes a difference in fit in the original size.
