I’m so glad his performance here never felt like “Jack Black but he’s in psychonaughts” while playing it was either just a ball of light we had to help or Helmut. I didn’t even know it was Jack Black until later and I can definitely hear it, but my point is that he did an amazing job embodying Helmut and this is a testament to that
That, or this is so 'Jack Black in Psychonauts' that it just passes our smell test and he completely fits. To be fair, he's cartoony enough to fit in this sort of game. Either way, amazing performance.

Jack Black's singing is usually high pitched and energetic, here he is so contained and deep, he is a great actor and singer
It helps that he's older; He's less energetic these days, and instead of it affecting the quality of the song, it actually elevates it, allowing Jack to put weight and presence in his voice.

Sounds like you WERE supposed to have a fight against Maligula's Memory here.
There was a point in development where EVERY boss fight was cut for time and money and only re-integrated after DF was bought by Microsoft and given a cash injection. It's possible Maligula was still left out of the roster for other reasons instead of being re-integrated, but whether it was deliberate or not I'm glad it didn't happen. Not only is the song the climax, but it winds up being Helmut himself who finally destroys her.
This song made me open my third eye.
Double Fine outdid themselves bringing in Jack Black for this, he's perfect as Helmut.

I love how when he first screams “healing” his memory vault immediately reacts.
Part of healing from trauma requires you to relive those horrible events and its very tempting to just leave all the progress you made altogether. I love this game so much.
Dude, this game was just AMAZING. I remember playing the OG back on PS2 all those years ago and this was such a nice continuation of such an amazing franchise. People need to talk about this series more and 2 (And Ironically enough Fullbear) is just an example of how even though it was absent for so long, it never lost its step the moment it came back in.

I only realize and remembered Jack Black was involved with Psychonauts 2 in this moment as he sings like there's something familiar with the way PSI king was singing.

And the best part is that it is technically not even the first time he was involved in music inside of a game, hell, he was the main character of a game all about heavy metal
I didn't understood the dialogue between Helmet and Maligula until I realized the Senses were suppose to represent his friends in real life
raz even says at the beginning that eye sounds like cruller :D
also if you hit them, while they said “ouch!” (or whatever) it would’ve shown their real names
its not as easy to pick out if you go to ottos before finding compton in psychoisolation,cruellers voice is obvious by that point(especially if you played the first game), bob being missing completely, given the context confuses me.
I realized that bit when Raz made the vision-crueller connection, but If you pay attention here you see bits that foreshadow the later reveal that Helmut and bob were an item- the heart that spins to reveal the ear which is bob- who hears plants. Another hint about thier relationship is in the big mural in the moderlobe- Bob and Helmut are not only right next to each other they are linking their arms together. My big regret is that we don't get more of Jack's voice acting, since helmut's brain is in a body voiced by someone else for most of the game.
@@timothycarney9652 Another thing I totally missed the first time was when you first enter the Touch/Hearing area, Psi-King gives a long description about how wonderful Hearing is, and then quickly adds, "And Dr. Touch is okay too," like an afterthought. The joke didn't click at all until I met the others later and had someone other than Cruller to voice-match everyone. Not really meeting Bob until much later in the game, I had no clue who Hearing was supposed to be at that point.
Gotta say, I'd had a lot about this game spoiled before hand just by following all the development content, but the way he memory vaulted HIMSELF caught me off guard. He was fully prepared to slip back into the inky blackness of non consciousness than face his memory of her, and like, that's just powerfully sad.

@@thehermit8618 In an earlier scene he goes to his quiet place in much the same method to avoid an enemy and calm down, so it is intentional.
And yeah, this one hit some wonderfully dark notes.

As someone with heavy trauma, it’s unbelievably hard not to want to crawl back to that dark place
Okay but this entire music video is done in-engine in realtime? They could have rendered the cutscene in advance but they opted to figure out all of the cuts, transitions, and effects using Unreal 4's tools and do the whole thing live, and that's honestly worth commending.
Unreal Engine 4 is a perfectly serviceable tool for making cinematics in.
It'll definitely age better that's for sure. I love psychonauts 1 but having it go from a higher resolution back to an old, fuzzy 4:3 video for cutscenes is a lil jarring sometimes.
Doing the cutscenes in engine is better for the performance (prerendered videos in take alot of memory to load in) and it scales to the resolution you are using. Unreal Engine 4 is also great for creating cutscenes, some animation studios even use it, instead of prerendering their animations.
these transitions they managed to work out in real time consistently blew my mind while playing through this. They could have easily copped out, frame dumped, and done the shit in after effects. They brute forced that mother fucker.
I think it will be awesome in future with Boundary Break this way lol

There's a Brutal Legend reference earlier in the level. When getting one of the instruments (I forget which) Raz mimics Eddy Riggs when he picks up the guitar at the start of Brutal Legend.

@@PlebNC The axe, but yes; it's when you pick the violin. They even put the audio cue and camera pan out they used in brutal legend, I was so happy to see that scene.

Jack often steals the show in whatever he is in. Honestly, he makes it hard to hate anything he is in just for the fact he is in it.
Fun Fact: if you use Clairvoyance on Helmut (at least in his mind), Raz will be seen in an outfit similar to that of Jack Black from Brütal Legend

Loved this when I first saw it in game! I thought that the little ball of light's voice sounded a bit like someone... and then he transformed and started to sing, and it finally hit me!

ngl the entire game feels like this lmao
There are so many drug references in this level it's actually hilarious. Not just "They come here to get high-- the view is really good from up there.", but also the level transitions where Raz is treated like a tab of acid (placed on Tasty's tongue), coke (Snorted by the giant nose), and the way Doctor Touch and Audi-O transition him resembles popping a pill. Also, hilariously, Helmutt (In nick's body) expresses a distaste for mushrooms to Bob, which I can't help but think has to do with a background in taking drugs. (I mean it certainly can be just because he doesn't like culinary mushrooms, but that's oddly specific to call out).
finding out that jack black was soul king was probably the greatest moment in this entire game.
What's crazy for me is that after playing the game, I can actually put a face to everyone in the band and that's rad as hell

Wow this reminds me of The Beatles Yellow Submarine. It's colorful, psychedelic, groovy, and catchy.
1:41 is a direct reference to that, so it was definitely intentional

Opposite for me actually, i was smiling all the way through this level and this song, this game's creativity just oozes all the way through.
Well I think this made me want to pick up the series. Yeah I know "shame! Shame!" XD just never got around to wanting to play them XD I'll deffently be adding the song once it's on Spotify for sure
I mean, this game... this song... this scene... I actually cried three times during this scene in the game.
So much Yellow Submarine, Jethro Tull, Velvet Underground and Hendrix throughout this and the level, and I L O V E it! The entire level had me in goosebumps throughout!
Gonna be honest this level and the bob level broke me a little. One of the few times I had to consciously take a break from a video game. Amazing game 15/10 and all that but damn do they know how to hit you directly at the core when they want to.
Especley the middle section of Bob's mind...god he sounded just broken there

I wish this game was getting more recognition. It is so good, hurts to see other platformers get way more gamer attention. They are fantastic games but this game deserves it too.

I could totally see Helmut traveling with the Aquatos, combining his Psychoddesey with there acrobatics.
.....That would Certenly put them back on top. And Bob could help with some flora florishes. Heck all the founder 6 could greatly contribute to the Aquato famaly circus.

so edit, I played up to this part and HOLY CRAP I was not expecting Jack to just voice him entirely. It's weird but definitely welcome have him in a much more tame role for once he's always kinda been super over the top as of lately

No joke, when I played this for the first time, I legit gasped when that Glowing Ball of Light finally took form at 'Now my cover's blown...' and we saw who this guy really was.
That whole section really was just. "Jack black. The Level."
I love how double fine and Tim Shafer decided to just say let's make the players feel like somebody slipped them a couple of hits of acid while they get to listen to psychedelic rock while playing this level

This level impressed me in both sound design music and the visuals are perfect
Helmut fullbear was definitely one of my favorite minds to explore. The music was great of course.
Psychonauts 2 is so good that it managed to make this level based on the rainbow, even using the crystal and sun light (I don't remember if that was the cover of an album), it related music and it's a small hint about the character being gay.
This is a good example of inclusivity, it's just another character with mental problems that are not centered around him being gay, everything just to end it with a nice song, simply beautiful.

Literally never played Psychonauts before but the graphics of this one looks incredible! the first one always stood out for the style to me but this looks like about 20 times as appealing

Helmut's role was exploring the mental connection between psi powers and creative arts.
It might seem useless, but look how important it was for so many people. In this music video, assuming it reflects their actual personalities, we see examples of:
- Compton confidently having a fun time all by himself.
- Otto having positive interactions with his teammates, something we don't see much in the game.
- Bob dancing around with Helmut during the song, physical fitness and meaningful relationships both being things he abandons after the maligula fight.
- Even Helmut himself having a fantastic time singing his song before he's cut off by Maligula.
I just realized that his Memory Vault was trying to keep maligula in but was unable to due to the pure intensity of the song
