I think the secret sauce of Pauper is that it’s the last format remaining that WotC isn’t actively designing cards for. Commons are designed with limited in mind first and foremost, and the cards find their way into Pauper organically, just like how eternal formats used to work before WotC started using Commander products and Modern Horizons to work around standard and print cards directly into them. Because of this, Pauper has mostly managed to dodge the worst effects of power creep, and still feels like “Magic as Garfield intended.”
So, I for one am glad that things like Cranial Plating can happen. The fact that it got printed despite likely needing to be banned in Pauper right away shows that WotC is still designing commons for limited first, and the fact that Gavin gave us the heads-up that the Pauper panel will be watching closely and ready to emergency ban it shows that they do care about the health of the format. Everything about this situation is a great sign for the continued health of Pauper. Anyone who hates on the format just because they assume commons = uncompetitive is missing out. Their loss.

I believe some cards are specifically designed/downshifted for pauper, but the thing is the critical mass of wotc shenanigans has not been reached (and hopefully will not be), because of your correct assesment - the cards must work in a limited environment as well. But things like circuit ninja or swiftspear downshift I believe to be intentional

@@Cybertech134 that doesn't really exist anymore, dude. Even if you're someone who can afford Legacy decks, or even just proxy them or proxy Vintage decks, that game doesn't exist anymore.
It effectively hasn't existed since the 6th Edition rules changes. I'm not here to argue which ruleset is better, because that's personal preference. That said, the game was considerably different with regards to the stack (there was one, but not really), and as such, it played differently.
On top of that, the power creep alone, even with it being managed pretty well over 30+ years, simply doesn't allow for the same game as Magic was in the 90s to be played today. Pauper decks, with the right draw, can compete with $1,000+ Modern and Legacy decks. Pauper has access to cards being printed in Commandsr product that still don't exist even in Modern. The things that those cards allow you to do, like Initiative, is NOTHING like Magic was back in the 90s.
I'd say that if you're really trying to replicate the play of the game in its earliest form, then your best bet would be to play Premodern, and then find and use the 5th Edition ruleset. Even Premodern without that ruleset still doesn't have that same style of gameplay.

    • @glennolson6505
      @glennolson6505 Месяц назад

@@Cybertech134 I would argue Limited. But that's looking at somewhat different idea of what 'back in the day' was like: when print runs were small and the secondary market (while still around) wasn't fully established and rather inconsistent, so most people were still largely playing with what they could open or trade for instead of just buying an optimized tier-1 deck off a dealer.

The seriousness of it is in each play group (FNM, kitchen table, RCQ, PT, etc). Keyboard warriors will always try to step on others to scratch a superiority itch. Leave the toxicity behind and let's just play a game.

I play pauper. I’m not upset about cranial ram’s printing. It will get banned. Might as well be an uncommon. They don’t design cards for pauper, and I think the format is better because of that.
Edit cuz I took a break halfway through: I AGREE!!! Pauper is like pure magic without the payoffs in a way that makes you just play the game. You go to a tournament and will spend eight hours playing the game. Commander feels like a dice roll, modern is so fast, pauper takes its time and lets you enjoy just playing magic.

I feel like people who say that Pauper can't be a real format because the cards are affordable are basically saying Magic the Gathering is a pay to win game. The thing I enjoy about Pauper is the fact that the decks are affordable. It means rather then worrying about spending a ton of cash on building my deck, I can spend the time to learn my deck. Learn what my cards do, learn the interactions and just play the game. Now I don't play pauper that often (because I just never make the time and not that many places near where I live run Pauper events) but at least I know that if I need to upgrade my pauper Boros Synthesizer list that it isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg to make the necessary changes. Also it's 2024 and I live in Ontario, shit is already expensive as it is, do I really need to add a high cost to my hobby even if I want to compete in events?

Honestly the printing of cranial plating is such a beautiful reminder of how great pauper is. My point is twofold: it’s printing represents that format doesn’t have sway over cards coming into it and the amazing PFPs response show that the people making banlist decisions are active and care. Like that’s the ideal scenario for me. I don’t want cards printed for pauper, I just want good bans and active communication, which Gavin and the rest of the PFP have given us in spades :-)

Edit: Affinity is my true main deck and it saddens me of how often the deck takes ban hits. Like I’ve gone through every pauper ban that instead of updating my affinity deck, I leave that version of the deck as it’s own thing and just rebuild a entire new affinity deck from the new meta. So I have like 6 affinity decks sitting on my shelves as a representation of that time of pauper meta.
Edit2: I always tell people pauper *feels* like 2015 modern. The power level, the way games play out and how decks evolve.

    [EDITED post video]
I think I compared the Cranial Ram to Cranial Plating on the last video, but I might have come across as making it seem less dangerous so I feel I need to clear things out.
Cranial Ram is absolutely insane and might need to be banned, but I still want a while to play with it in Pauper just to see HOW busted it is. Maybe we read too hard into it and it's actually quite fine in powerlevel, or if it's so broken that the entire format warps into something from a horror flick. I suspect the latter.
Afterall, affinity has had a long history of continously adding cards to the banlist.
I absolutely agree that the format gets a lot of useless hate.

I used to love Pauper, and I played Elves the whole time. Personally, I dropped the format because the downshift and power creep of commons made it impossible to play what I want. All that Glitters and Fiery Cannonade being dropped down to common ruined my favorite Pauper deck, and since then End the Festivities made board wipes against my favorite deck cost 1 mana. The fact that they print all these more efficient Affinity threats and interaction and don't give the board dependent decks something to fight back really highlights for me the issues with current card design that makes the format no longer enjoyable for me. I've tried other decks but none of it is enjoyable. My favorite game of Magic I've ever played was an elves mirror match in Pauper, and I'd love to have more experiences like that, but Pauper doesn't seem like it will ever be that again.

The pauper advisory group doesn't have any say in what cards get printed or downgraded when WotC releases new products.
I believe that's a good thing, common's are important for a sets limited format and that should be higher priority in design consideration.
If cards are printed that are too powerful, that is when the advisory group will step in and ban a card. I'm personally in favor of not pre-banning any cards, but it's nice to know that they are acknowledging the power of this card.

I recently built 4 casual pauper decks to take to a cottage with my friends. My stipulation is it had to be innastrad based and guess what? It was fun as hell. We sat out on the dock at the table and had a blast. Vampires vs werewolves vs humans vs spirits/ zombies. It was a great time for less than $40 and that’s where the hatred comes in. These idiots who have spent $800 to make a modern deck just to get stopped by Scam are mad that we can have a great time with very little investment. There is no wrong way to play magic but there is a wrong way to be a fan. Also if you live in Toronto, there is a store in Brampton who rocks pauper night

Can this stupid idea even work? xD

When I play standard, pioneer or modern I play with decks I have access to and not what I think the best decks are.

Ok so i will play devils advocate for cranial ram. Albeit with slight bias since i am a grixis affinity pauper player. I believe the card shouldnt be banned for a couple of reasons. 1. As already stated is that removal for the card is much more open for it. The toughness difference from all that glitters and ram makes red removal viable to kill the creature. It makes it so that gingerbrute csn be killed if need be if you arnt dead on board to it. Its also a red permanent in addition to being sn artifact so abrade and hydroblast can destroy it.
    2. Unlike cranial plating theres no way to instant speed equip it for unblocking shenanigans.
    3. The casting cost as well the equip cost are worse on end compared to both ATG and CP. Requiring colored mana to cast as well as 2 to equip are worse on rate, making thus card much slower to add onto the relevant bodies you want to put it on like flyers or gibgerbrute. This is where the argument is tricky because said equipment comes with a body so you are paying for a creature as well. But said creature has 1 toughness with the ram and dies if you want to reequip the ram to another creature.
I am not saying that ram is not on the ban list chopping board, but i think these 3 pts have weight that might make ram a powerful but dealable-with card in pauper. Its definly powerful and we did just ban ATG. But i think having a creature still die to relevant damage removal could make the card not be banned. Id at least like a week or 2 of testing to see if it breaks the format or if the 3 pts i put up here are relevant enough to make the card "just strong" and not ban worthy. Feel free to discuss pts against this. Im down for a civil debate on this topic.

Personally, my only issue with Pauper is that there seem to be a large number of evangelists in the format. Constantly preaching at me about how it is actually the best and most skill intensive format because there are no bombs. I think the format is fine, but I like Pioneer the best. I have met several Pauper fanatics who lose their minds and want to argue with me about why I am wrong which is just plain obnoxious.

Not enough people play it, and it doesn't get enough attention as a played format. I used to play pauper, and it's fine. I played a grixis delver pile because I wanted to play blightning. It worked well enough, and I had a little fun, but there's just not enough people who play.

So, with regards to the whole "Gavin knows more than you" section...
I get the inclination to believe this, because you're right, Gavin does know more than the average Reddit/RUclips person who doesn't play competitively (but still says that "play" a format).
But with that said, WOTC has had some pretty whack bannings the last few years. I will die on the hill that Fury was a banning purely out of whining from the MTG community. Pros of all types have also agreed with this sentiment. There's precedent there that WOTC actually doesn't know what it's doing anymore with regards to format balance, at least less so than in previous eras.
Not saying Cranial Ram won't need to be banned, just saying that WOTC isn't infallible just because they make the game. Gavin himself doesn't even play competitively.

Pauper deserves more recognition and appreciation. Its limitations allow it to be both a very fun, relatively cheap format to play casually AND a highly competitive format with games sometimes ending as quickly as old-school vintage in the right hands. I don't get the hate for any given format, adults can and should be able to say, "I don't get it/it's not for me" and step away from a discussion.

To your point about curation in Pauper, it's the same as in any format, honestly: you're trying to build a good pile of cards and pilot them well. You can make a deck of all uncommons or rates or mythics and come out with an absolutely miserable, unplayable, high-loss experience, rarity in itself has little to no bearing on the quality of interaction, metagaming, player skill, or thoughtfulness that goes into deck building

My biggest concern right now is I feel like WotC doesn't understand Modern players. Instead of designing cards for Modern that are focused on tournament grinding, why not focus on cards that can make jank decks or rogue decks better? Like focus more on the play aspect of the game and not on ending matches quickly. Things like Scam, are not healthy for Modern. Nobody wants to be double thoughtseized on Turn One. How did this get approved at WotC? That was a huge mistake. But it is not just Scam but everything they are designing for Modern that irks me. I can tell the focus is in the wrong place. Nobody cares about the pro tour post 2020, so WotC needs to focus more on the fun of the formats rather than the pro tour. I've played Pauper in the past. It's fine. I'm not crazy about some of the changes WotC has made to the Pauper format, but it's not my favorite format, so it doesn't really concern me much. Where I live now, there isn't a strong Pauper community so I've moved on from the format.

Part of the problem is they have the reserve list they swore they won't reprint, that they are trying to reprint in slightly altered forms. So we usually get power crept versions of older cards, they don't comprehend how to rank them rarity wise leading to redic commons and uncommons and underwhelming mythics.

I don't get why people care if they print a card like this. They already know it's probably going to be banned. People NEED to understand they will NEVER design cards with other formats in mind. Modern horizons was made for modern there is 0 considerations for other formats giving in card design. And this is a GOOD thing. Let WOTC cook guys have more experience making a success card game than every commenter complaining about cards combined. If it's banned who cares? Like seriously it won't affect the format at all at that point, why complain about something that already will be taken care of? It's childish and stupid.
