Can I use carbon wheels also on my winter bike?

  • I wanted to use my old Prime carbon wheels with new Pirelli tyres on my winter Canyon Ultimate, swapping from the Mavic Aksium aluminium wheels with Gatorskins. In the wet there is no contest, I'll be back on the Aksium!

Maybe try aero wheels with alloy brake tracks for a low maintenance solution. You can pick them up cheap 2nd hand because they're a bit older and heavier. OR you can try textured carbon brake tracks and every week you clean the pads quick and give them a light sanding, with alcohol wiped brake tracks (takes 10 seconds). The textured brake tracks allow the pads to break through the water film better. For best performance go with alloy brake tracks though.
When it comes to braking and advice, everybody is different. A lighter rider on moderate inclines with normal hand grip strength, at non-racing speeds, riding rim brakes, isn't going to understand the complaints from other riders about braking. Simply determine where you are on the spectrum.

@@mikeh6286 yes, I could try better wheels with the aluminium track. I have the Winspace Lun wheels on my other Ultimate and they brake much better, but I am not going to use them on the wet commutes.

I know many people like carbon wheels. I stopped on a bridge path were a chaps rear carbon wheel blew up when was traveling at least 55 down hill he bounced between the railing which is only less than 4 feet apart ., he was seriously hurt . Please check your tires and wheels. .be safe 🍺🚲🍺

    Go for Campagnolo Zonda c17

Fede, get a set of Campagnolo Zonda alloy wheels, much lighter, better looking, and bombproof, then use Koolstop Salmon pads, it will stop on a dime…

My Elitewheels Drive rims with supplied brake pads are breaking great even in the wet. Only a tiny delay compared to discs.

Yes, newer developed carbon wheels are much better, also my Lun Hyper on the other Ultimate are very good, with the grooved surface. But I can't afford to have a commuting bike dedicated only for rainy days with carbon wheels 😅

@@fede1275 Of course, I'm not commuting on this one bike. For commuting, I'm using my cheap gravel bike with disc brakes and road tires ( because I don't like offroading). But my other bikes are Look 795 blade RS (original) with Ultegra disc and Time VXS Translink with Campy 11speed rim brakes. So I can easily compare braking performance. I'm riding exclusively on hilly terrain, and breaking from over 80km/h to almost 180 degree hairpin is no problem for rim brakes. Discs on road bike are overkill, but better longevity and maintenance.
