Honestly all the main quests onwards are bangers, so I'm excited to see how you'll take them on! I finished the third and final act in one night because my adrenaline was rushing and I was on the edge of my seat for the entirety of it... Veilguard isn't anywhere close to perfect - it surely has some real low points - but when it hits high, it soars
Definitely agree with you about the whole element of people missing out. I mean, I get the argument that if a game makes a bad first impression or it feels like it's not for you, you're not obligated to continue by any means. However, if I didn't watch or play half or more of a piece of media, I wouldn't want to go around telling everybody how terrible it was, I would just say it wasn't for me or I didn't like it at the start, and that would be the end of it. Veilguard has a lot of problems, as most games do, but occasional awkwardness and less smaller choices is not as big of a deal for me when there are still these big and great moments that play into the lore of past games and the current game.
I feel that the Rock Paper Shotgun review really captures the game in a nutshell: a bit "puppyish in its eagerness," the world feels rather utilitarian in its design at times, and the combat feels like a pastiche of other games. But when you get right down to it, the combat is still quite fun, the companions are well-written, the world is beautiful & varied, the lore reveals are interesting, Solas is a delight as an antagonist, the big quests are successfully grand in their spectacle, and the finale may just be their best one in a good while. Flawed indeed, but a solid return to form.
Like I said many times. The game is not flawless but neither were DAO, DA2 and DAI. Considering the 9 years production hell that it's been stucked in through at least two full reboots of its development with each time a back and forth with completely different intentions and most likely some heavy rewritings at the last minute when half of BioWare was laid off earlier this year hence the shift from Dreadwolf to Veilguard and the number of different writers that came and went on this project, it's a miracle that the game came out in the state it was released. From a technical point of view : it runs smoothly (almost ?) without bugs. Gameplay is definitely entertaining. Graphics look good, you may like or not the artistic direction but that is purely subjective. Music is good. Story is solid. Yes, the dialogues have a Marvel feel to it with a lot of real/modern language and they lack a lot of subtlety on sensitive topics but considering what I just said above. Is it really surprising ? No. And I am personally happy with what I got.
The banter between Bellara and Neve at 1:00:40 is about the story in Tevinter Nights - The Horror of Hormak. It's a good story with interesting lore about Ghilan'nain and what she was doing in ancient times as an Evanuris.
This quest made me truly hooked. My reaction to you-know-what and you-know-who was cheering, then confusion and then a giant gasp 😂😂 One of the BEST parts of the game and I'm so excited to see this episode 🤩❤️

I'm so glad that you're enjoying the game! I absolutely loved Veilguard, and I love all the other DA games. The way I see it is, no game is perfect. They're all made by flawed humans, flawed teams and flawed companies. Also, so many games - especially long ones - start out in a less engaging way (eg, I tried ME1 and hated all of the exposition at the start, so I ditched it. I eventually went back about a year later and pushed through - now Mass Effect is one of my favourite franchises.).
Fire & Ice is phenomenal! Seeing Mapoqun lift and fire that ballista bolt felt WAY more badass (and more plausible) than my tiny MW elf girly 😂And yes, if you pick Treviso you start with their dragon first and Viago comes in with poisoned ballista bolts! Viago's cool and all, but that buttery smooth Mercer voice coming to your rescue... (I'll still save Treviso every time though)
It's my opinion that the game just continues on an upward trajectory from here. I also loved Fire and Ice and how cinematic it was, though I did notice that the blighted dragons were a much easier fight than I expected because of how much I had leveled and how I had already faced a ton of more difficult enemies before them. Also, it's worth mentioning that there is some lore that I thought kind of connected the Gloom Howler to the race they once were, especially when you remember what corrupted and blighted elves were in prior games. You made a nice prediction about them being a Warden, but I also thought the connection between them having a howling ability and the resemblance to shrieks from previous games was a pretty cool callback too.
It's so refreshing to see someone enjoy Veilguard and praise it for the things it does well. This game just gets better the deeper into the story you get, I agree. I just did this quest yesterday, and I was the same way about the screenshots! haha So epic! It was my first proper dragon fight since the Treviso/Minrathous choice, too, so I thought for sure I was going to get wiped when the second dragon showed up. But it was such a great fight, and the Viper showing up was amazing. Then the other fellow shows up, and time literally stops, and, well... I felt as frozen in my chair as my character was in the air. Man, it was something else. What an event!
Man, Warden set pieces are my absolute favourite in this game. Complete bias, no shame. We got Ostagar and Adamant in the past, and now Weisshaupt and Hossberg. Hope Genitivi is still kicking about producing some stellar accounts.
Well said about giving the game time to breathe and grow! It definitely shows its 9 years of development hell, but I had a great time with what we got.
The fire and ice quest is when the game clicked for me. The game really only gets better as it goes on, the opposite in my opinion to inquisition, which i feel like people are looking at through rose colored glasses. Glad you're enjoying the game, mapo, despite what all the haters said!
Whoever decided the names for the quests in this game did very well so much promise and anticipation. Loved the Ice and Fire it feels epic but i think all the main quests after the first couple have good energy in this game. It is such a shame many people have not and perhaps never will try the game due to the flaws and often misrepresentation it gets; it is certainly worth playing for the lore, characters and the story once it gets going. Glad you gave it a chance and i hope lots more will in the new year we might be in for a very good Mass effect 4 if the same team takes inspiration from Veilguard and refines it more.
Thank you, Mapo, for this playthrough and your thoughts on the game. Although I have a lot of complaints about this game, and the more I thought about it and its potential - the sadder I became. You reminded me that I enjoyed it while I played it, and there are a lot of major and minor moments that were done really well. I will definitely replay it in the future to have an "opposite" playthrough with my Mourn Watch character to romance the best character of this game - Emmrich :3
Definitely agree that this game gets a lot of things right, and I had heard (and it appears to be true) that the back half of the game is much better than the first half. My biggest problem was I hit a wall before that point, and I just wanted to spend the limited gaming time I have playing other things. I haven’t written it off completely, but the odds of getting back to it seem slim with the time I have (not to mention all the games releasing in 2025). I definitely have mixed feelings on that.
I feel you about feeling disconnected at first but same it gets better and better , the start is abit weak sadly. But still it's a great games. There is alot of stuff that would need to be write better. But definitly it gets better as you progress.
I'm glad you like this game I have read and heard so many awful things about it which are undeserved for example another creator on this platform said it was the worst RPG ever made which is absolutely ludicrous firstly because it's not true secondly because it would mean he played every RPG ever made which he didn't but sadly many people believe the bs people like him say.
😮😮😮 how did u defeat the dragons so quickly?!?! I got my ass handed to me when I played the first time! Maybe cause I play as a mage. But woweee!!! Also def agree with everything u said about the game. I felt the same about andromeda. While there r valid criticisms, this game AND andromeda were amazing.
Some of these main missions are amazing I agree, I think that the the intro of the game and the ending is also pretty perfect. However my issues lie with how lame the world and companions are written, and how sanatized everything feels. And yes even though there are parts where the game is "dark" in terms of how it looks, for me the wiriting is not taken nearly seriously enough to be dark. The redesigned enemies and the endless amount of repeated exposition, and removal of almost all mysteries in a what I would say unsatisfying way also drags the game down. We knew Solas was an elven god and that the other gods are evil, but we never got a proper dalish reaction to this. The whole game is a watered down version of dragon age that feels like was written for kids.
I absolutely agree with you! I played the whole game (it seems you did, too), so it's not a lack of playing. There were moments when I was hopeful that the game would recover for me, like when I encountered some interesting lore or atmospheric visuals. But I would be instantly slapped with narration that chewed the information for me like I was 3 years old, removing any intrigue or some kindergarten-level dialogue that would make me slap my face and kill the whole mood. My most memorable moment from the game was observing an epic and magnificent environment. I felt the strongest sense of regret ever about the game: The Veilguard will never be. Instead of an epic adventure that would make my mind and heart race, I've had a constant cringe and frustration, to the point that I couldn't care less about any of the companions, including the main character.
just a heads up, idk if youll agree necessarily or not. but this is the area of the game where i found i needed to up the difficulty and enemy hp as much as i could cuz you really start to just shred lol
This game might have had its faults but it had some badass moments in this game but we all know that the people who did Inquisition Origins and Dragon Age2 and this game it would be a whole lot better

That's the problem with DATV is that runs the line really close between flaw and success sometimes it feels like it pulls both off at the same time. It is also subjective what one considers a flaw. I enjoyed Veilguard, even loved some parts of it, but other bits I was really disappointed with and that pretty much cancelled out the good. I was still encountering things I considered serious flaws through the final act. Its really just luck as to whether you gel with more than you dislike and that opinion can shift after finishing the playthrough. I'm more critical towards the game now, after a period of reflection, than I was during it. For me the music was really poor, it's really well produced but generic. In fits and starts its excellent but I challenge anyone to actively remember the tracks they hear after they've finished playing, does it sound like Dragon Age, for me; no. There is no Decent or Trespasser-like theme that sears itself into the brain or a motif that harkens back to the Zur like Origins stuff. Their is little continuity or connectivity with past titles, save for a few dreadwolf inspired scenes that stand out musically because of their use of an older soundtrack. The companions were more hit than miss for me. Hard to deep dive into it before Mapo finishes but I just never appreciated Taash or Harding as they are written and was left wanting by the quests and character development of Lucanis, Harding, and to a lesser extent Neve and then much lesser extent Bellara. The Lighthouse banter and lack of interactivity between the player and NPCs in the Lighthouse was another problem. The mechanics of completing companions quests for me were also a huge fumble by the game. Certain things alter my opinion also depend on PC choice, I played a dwarf, I was left frustrated by all the dwarf stuff that promises so much at the start. I however, was lucky in that I saved Treviso. No matter how bad I though Lucanis was written, imagine my feelings if I'd saved Minrathous instead! Throw in the world reactivity and on a second+ playthrough the illusions of choice and I struggle to make my peace with the game even though I'm happy and relieved with what we got (if that makes sense.) I can't think of another game that has ever left me so conflicted.
The soundtrack does play in my head every now and then, and for me, it creates a great atmosphere that's always just a little unsettling. I'm rather choosy when it comes to music, too. On the other hand, I can't say that I ever remembered any Inquisition soundtrack. So maybe it's not that the Veilguard soundtrack is bad but rather that music is subject to taste.
It's so obvious that the people complaining about some things in this game never even played it for more than an hour or two, because the cinematics and story just gets better and better
I’d really love to see the reception of this game in a non election year. American Politics have seeped there way into gaming culture and it’s the worst.
What a unique comment, except I've seen it written time and time again for Dragon Age II and...Dragon Age Inquisition. So I guess it's always been ruined huh

I love how silly Rook is. It’s my favorite honestly
It's so obvious that the people complaining about some things in this game never even played it for more than an hour or two, because the cinematics and story just gets better and better
I’d really love to see the reception of this game in a non election year. American Politics have seeped there way into gaming culture and it’s the worst.
This is what was teased in that one trailer
Why couldn’t the rest of the game be this dark?
Still a crap game bc it ruined what was dragon age.
What a unique comment, except I've seen it written time and time again for Dragon Age II and...Dragon Age Inquisition. So I guess it's always been ruined huh
Yeah you just lost all credibility bro
Me when I watch episode 21 of a let’s play series just to be an ass
you must have a lot of free time on your hands
Yuck
