This is probably one of your better quality videos I’ve seen. I watch most of these, and the level of detail and ACTUAL comparison you did was amazing and I think sets you apart from the other reviewers. Most just say “more bright more better” which isn’t always right. That picture setting adjustability was the first time I’ve ever heard someone compare the platforms in depth, and I think that’s huge to talk about. Keep it up!
Where I live, 4k broadcasts are in trial. Having the 3.0 4k tuner was a huge reason to buy ($200ish 3.0 tuners are available separately). I am also impressed with my 65U8H audio quality. I have a Jamo S809 5.2.2 paired with a 2700H Denon hooked up to my 55U8G in my game room. The 65U8H doesn't "require" a soundbar or AVR like every single other TV I have owned over the last 50 years. Hisense price to performance casts shade on other TV brands as well. I bought one of the last 32" CRT 480i TVs for my parents many (many) years ago. They enjoyed the picture and whatever noise came out of the TV was just fine. Going back 64 years, I remember watching The Mickey Mouse Club on TV. Over the decades, RCA, Sony, LG, Samsung and Toshiba entered our homes and now finally Hisense. I think Hisense is worth a look when shopping for a new TV. Your review of the U8G series prompted my first and second look at Hisense.
Thanks for these videos! our old TCL 6 series from a few years back died. I saw your U8H review and it seemed like a great fit because we wanted good HDR performance and have a bright living room. I bought the TV and it has been really amazing.
@@michaelzoran When looking for it in YoutTube HDR content (only ever watch for testing) I can see it, but in "real world" use watching HDR movies and shows on streaming services I have not noticed it at all.

This is broadcast in either 720p or 1080i on most channels. How do you think this is "upscaled"? Third, I watch a lot of DVD movies in 480i resolution and there are also Comcast TV channels in 480i. For example, all the Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Star Trek Voyager, and so many other TV programs are only on DVD. How do these end up looking when "upscaled" on this Hisense U8H? Finally, there are some models of TV sets when one size such as a 65" is different than a 75" TV. For example, the 65" TV that most places reviewed may have a problem that the 75" TV that released later did not have. That is only a possibility, but that is why I'm asking if you know of anything like that?
I have the 65 U8H and it’s been awesome. I hate the motion correction on any TV so I turn it off. I use it for our family room in our basement and it performs well in bright light and complete darkness. We stream everything and we don’t do gaming so I can only comment on how it handles Disney+, Hulu, Netflix, etc. Movies and live sports look great. I have it mounted and it’s paired with my Yahama soundbar and there is no issue with the sound.
The actual side by side comparisons are great. It is also so nice to see you going strong after such a huge dry spell of new TVs. Thanks for the great content and it is so helpful to those of us on a budget.

I have had TCL tv's for the last several years. I bought the 75 inch, r635 in 2020 and am now having black screen issues. Unfortunately, I did not have an extended warranty and the TCL and Roku customer support was useless. After looking into this there are many complaints about the black screen issue with the TCL''s. I thought maybe I just got a bad one, but I had a 32-inch TCL do the same exact thing. I purchased the Hisense U8H, and it will arrive a day after Christmas. I advise everyone who buys a TCL or even the Hisense to get the extended warranty. I have never gotten an extended warranty in the past but with TV's I will never make that mistake again
Others may have noted this before but for me if you are going to do a side by side comparison of an image you should do a side by side of the exact same section of the image and not a split screen of the full image with some of it on one tv and the other half of the image on the other tv. It leaves me having to take your word for it for example when on the left you show the “shimmer” on the feathers of the bird for Hisense but say that’s not the case on TCL but are showing an completely different half of the image, a half that in most cases has far more light and less contrast. Best if you compare apples to apples where you can. Just say’n.
Getting the 65r646 for $599 at Best Buy was the deciding factor for me. I know there were problems with the Google OS when it debuted but the firmware updates seemed to have alleviated many of those.
Great take. Thx much. No one on RUclips does a better job evaluating TVs than you do; yours are always thorough but still concise and easily digestible for semi-nit nears like myself. Personally I’m leaning towards waiting for larger sized QD OLEDS to hit the market unless my very old Vizio dies first or there’s a Black Friday deal on a 70-80ish inch tv that’s simply too good to pass up. I think one important comparison missed is the warranty that comes standard on these tvs. The U8H comes with a 2 year warranty where the TCL only has a 1 year. With these tvs being so close in comparison and considering the population buying these tvs I feel this is an important factor. Also another important factor is the anti-reflective coating on the TCL is horrid. Leaves these huge rainbow effects across the screen that I noticed right a way. More nit picking: the remote on the u8h is better, it glows in the dark and has a find my remote feature (especially important with how small both remotes are) Finally the packaging on the u8h was far superior. I had both TV's delivered by Amazon and the TCL came defective twice first 3 burnt mini LEDs not a huge deal, second screen was totally black. The foam protecting the u8h was just better.
I just replaced a 65" Hisense 65U6G TV that had stellar reviews at it's price point, but it only lasted 16 months before going black. I had the mainboard replaced and it remained black. I won't go into dealing with Hisense customer service on your forum. I chose to replace the Hisense with the TCL 75" Roku 75R655 2022 model. I love this TV albeit for jumping back and forth to adjust the picture nearly to my liking.

Firstly, Caleb I love your videos. I live in South Africa and actually purchased the Hisense U8H but was so disappointed in it I returned it 24 hour later. I'm pretty confident that the model we get in South Africa apart from not running Google TV (it runs VIDAA) does not use the same hardware. The unit I had had terrible "backlight bleed" on the left side of the screen as well as the right hand side corners. This was not what I was expecting from a mini-led TV. My decision to return the TV was ultimately based on the fact that I would not be able to live with this issue (this TV is not exactly a budget TV here in South Africa). I then went for a LG CS OLED. The CS model here in South Africa is an update on last years C1 as the C2 in South Africa apart from being very scarce is super expensive. For customers here in South Africa that are particular about picture quality we have to stick to the brands like Samsung and LG as the "budget" brands Hisense and TCL are not the same hardware that you guys get in North America.
Love watching your videos Caleb! I gotta say though as a guy working a minimum wage job I know realistically I can't afford these TVs. But recently I saved up some Cash and purchased a 50 inch 4k TV upgrading from a 13 year old 1080p 40 inch TV and that jump was a great leap in viewing experience. The greatest thing of all was I was able to find the 4k Sharp TV on Craigslist for 50 dollars. I really enjoy your comparisons to older TVs I would love to see more of that content!
I have both TVs. He is 100 percent correct in all areas. TCL is easier to watch, no sunglasses needed. Hisense can be heard clearly. Roku is better than Google by far for access to media. Google keeps you within their realm too much. TCL daily driver, Hisense when you give a tour of your home.
I would really appreciate some long term, reliability videos on tv's. Doesn't matter how good they look etc. if it doesn't do it for long. I have been guilty of buying the latest and greatest tv's etc. only to have them start having problems after a few years. I also have bought tv's that were considered "cheap" that I still have and that still work great after 15+ years. Warrantys are fine but it is a royal pain to deal with between unplugging everything, boxing it up, shipping etc. I prefer a reliable tv over one with a dazzling picture etc. I see tons of videos about new tv's and how great or not their features are but none on reliability.
So agree. I’m still watching my (then) 15 year old high end Pioneer Elite 50 inch plasma. The TV has detachable 15w side speakers that provide great sound (for a TV). Yeah, it’s a 1080p, but it’s still working fine and I’m having a tough time justifying replacing it with one if the TVs reviewed here. The Elite’s longevity has spoiled me, and I’ve read a number of comments of folks receiving new dud TVs, particularly the Hisense. I wonder which of these two have the better reputation for durability?
@@Naldynator Dude I paid $580 for my Hisense U8H. Let's say it goes beyond 5 years (and that's easily); then I already got my money's worth because: 1. I can replace the same model cheaply, and 2. I will buy a newer TV with better specs. We're talking now and not later, and I'll tell you Hisense smokes the TCL 6 series. You can even check the Ratings review if you don't believe me. TV's will surpass 5 years easily and if you are going to BS me about longevity then go ahead and buy the inferior TCL and keep it for 5+ years knowing you could've chosen the better TV. But, I've heard from various BestBuy and other tech store reps that there are always tons of returns, exchanges and dissatisfied customers with Hisense. This is why I'd like to hear more about reliability - not necessarily long term, but more like 1 to 2 years (or right about then time when the manufacture warranty conveniently expires). Is that ok with you? Would you allow someone to question 2-year reliability for a new TV you like, without blowing a gasket about it? Lol! FYI: I still have a Panasonic V Series television, which still looks and performs great, since 2009. When you buy quality, you don't have to replace things every 5 years. (I also have a Sony A8G - 3 years old, which I hope lasts me just as long; a Samsung UN Series - 3 years old, which I got for free; and a TCL 5 series - 2 years old, which I like very much and don't mind if it gives out at 5 years, cuz I got it for like 300 bucks. I'd like to try a Hisense - but not if it's gonna konk out on me after a year.
I would like to see a top 5 bang for your buck video. Also, Ive been looking in this price range but one thing that a lot of TV’s on the mid to lower price end don’t do is support Dolby Atmos. Maybe you could do a video showing price thresholds for what features you can expect to get for the money you pay.
I have the u8h in a 75. Gaming looks insane. So bright and smooth. My hdr looks great! I haven't seen any shimmer. The only thing I will say about the hisense is that its processing is it's weak spot. I watch a lot of sdr content and it's just not as buttoned up as I would like. Being a 75 inch when I am 8ft plus away from it it's good. But when I walk up closer it's like yeaaa... lol. But I think I'll keep it. I'm coming from a 10yr old 60 inch sharp so you can imagine the difference 😁
I game both on the couch and close up in the computer chair(4ft-5ft). What's your opinion on both HDR and SDR gaming at a closer distance? Also SDR blurays or just streaming was the mediocre experience? Thanks😄
I usually use MKV to put my DVDs and Blu-ray on a memory card, and then watch them on my computer with an HDMI cable connected to the TV. If I did that with this Hinsense U8H, would there be high-quality video? Or would there be problems with "processing"?
@@michaelzoran Depends on what mode you have the TV set to. Nowadays for most TVs they'll adjust image quality and processing based on what hdmi input device setting you have it set to. Setting the HDMI input your PC is connected to to Game Console and Blu ray player tend to get the best color and image processing turned on. Also you could just put the files on a USB flashdrive and connect it to the TV directly since just about every Smart TV nowadays will play MKV files.
I love that Caleb does everyday consumer TVs not just the $2000 Sony, LG or Samsung units. Bought th U6 on sale $549 for the 55 and pulling 625 nits on my phone app
I work in a service department, and from experience i can tell you which brands we see the most. The reason why these Chinese sets are cheaper than the Japanese brands is down to the quality of the parts used. The worst by far are the low end sets made in Turkey for the supermarkets. As for Hisense vs TCL there is not a lot of difference, we replace the underated components in both brands with better spec parts to prevent bounced repairs that only last a short time. Just out of interest i rebuilt a Hisense U8H power supply with higher rated diodes and capacitors, it runs all day long on our test bench, the customer refused to have it back. After 3 months of daily use it hasn't suffered the issues that these sets have, so if only they used better parts their reputation would improve. The old saying of buy cheap buy twice comes to mind, it's your money at the end of the day.
I love these type of comparison videos and appreciate this coming into the holiday buying season. I think the only thing I would like to see is a further comparison against the Vizio P-series 2023 once that drops.
Appreciate your intuitive overview. Yet...as a senior buyer..you have to understand you have people (A Navy veteran,here) who have macular degeneration or other vision issues. Consequently, all we want is a non tech set that works. Detail can be a moot point sometimes on our wish list. A big enough screen to sit far away and still enjoy a series or a movie. Why don't companies have labels that state...best or good for the elderly or compromised. Better design for the aging population is always appreciated. Thanks for your channel's intent.
Awesome comparison!!! I am glad that I got a 55 inch Hisense U8H. In SDR or HDR I personally did not notice any shimmer that is being mentioned in this comparison for U8H. I also have Samsung KS8000 and Sony X900f and my U8H simply smokes both of my other tvs in picture quality and responsiveness of the UI. I paid alot more for my other tvs but this U8H does not cost alot only paid $649 so it won't be heartbreaking to replace it after a few years.
I would love to see you address off axis viewing capabilities because not everyone gets those perfect seats in a large group movie night or game party!
Just bought the TCL R655 75”, and I hate the lack of settings (or ease of use getting to them), but absolutely have no complaints with picture. 9.5/10 (other than the settings issues)
Thanks for this video, Caleb and team. The shimmer effect on the Hisense is an unfortunate dealbreaker for me. Fortunately, I have 3 other TCL TVs so I’m quite well versed with the limitations of Roku.

Never even considered getting TCL till the other day. I was going to get the hisense u7h but after a few ropey reviews I get the TCL and I well happy with it. For the price it's brilliant set.
I wish you can do a follow up on issues of these TVs regarding serious problems. All these TVs come with great features and whatnot but the longevity of these TVs is needed IMO. E.G is it worth it to by a cheaper TV but it won't last longer than five years than a more expensive TV that will last 10plus.
I really appreciated this video. If there was a Google TV version of the TCL that would be an absolute no-brainer for me. I've run into so many frustrations with Roku that I don't think I can ever go back. Most notably, there isn't any formal Twitch integration (at least not within the last 6 months or so that I tried) and screen mirroring has been super hit or miss from my Android phone. I'm glad to hear the Hisense is so close. We added blackout curtains to our living room because our current Sceptre tv had such little brightness, so maybe we can finally let the sun in if we upgrade!
Good video. I would like to see a straight up TV OS comparison. Samsung Tizen 🤮 , LG webOS, Roku, Google, vidaa and so on. Not focusing on TV performance and simply OS. so many people add devices like a Roku or Apple TV but showing what's built in would be educational. I personally was hoping when manufacturers added filmmaker mode it would eliminate a lot of picture setting adjustments but it doesn't seem to be the case.
They seem very similar and i am having a hard time deciding between the two. It will be used for next gen gaming, and streaming apps in a mostly dark room
I have the U8H for ps5 and it is the best TV I've ever used for gaming. Definitely a good idea to tweak come color setting and brightness settings which is easy to find on you tube for best setting features. Now I want 65 inch for living room TCL is close but for the gaming aspect I'm gonna have to stick to the u8h for me
I know that you have said that you are only going to review or do comparisons on tv's that are available in the USA ruling out brands like Panasonic and Phillips. That is rather unfortunate in that I consider you Caleb to be the best that I have seen here on RUclips. It also surprises me somewhat that the USA doesn't have practically everything under the sun in regards to consumer products. I live in Vancouver Canada and we aren't nearly as big of a market as cities like New York and LA and we get those brands. I don't care so much about Phillips but Panasonic is a brand that I have seen and believe to be a premium brand that competes very favourably with brands like Sony,Samsung,LG,and others.. Keep up the great work that you do Caleb. I very much enjoy your informative channel.

I'd go with the TCL. The lack of shimmering with better motion clarity makes it an automatic win since I don't mind fine tuning the hell out of a picture to get what I want. Shimmering is death and it's why I hate my current IPS gaming monitor for content viewing. Roku needs to get their shit together though for real.
Before you go with the TCL look up the issues with black screen. I have had that issue with two TCL's and will never buy another TCL again. My 75-inch R635 I purchased in 2020 is now having the black screen issue and I am very unhappy with TCL.
Unfortunately, the TCL 655 is not available in Canada yet, only the 635 or 646 from what I can see. So because of that, might have to default to U8H just due to availability.
Definitely made me comfortable about making the decision for a TCL. really, them being comparable for what mattered for me let me justify a lower sale price point at this point. thanks for your hard work
Great video, Caleb! I think I'd probably go with the more dazzling Hisense U8H being that it also has better sound and Google TV. However, I'm really leaning more towards to stellar color accuracy and motion smoothing of the Sony TVs and I'd love to see you do a comparison video on the Sony A80K 65" (since it's now down to $1700 at most outlets) and the LG C2 65", which is close to the same price now as well. Your wanting a comparison of high end oled vs these mini led? Not a good comparison bro. Of course the A80 and Ce OLEDs will destroy these two TVs. But they are also significantly more expensive.

@@Pidgeys Yes very true on almost all TVs except Sonys OLEDs and Hisense U8H. Those TVs come with like a 200$ soundbar kinda sound. Hisenses U8H is the best sounding budget tv on the market by a freaking mile! It competes with 2-3k TVs in sound and picture quality

This was quite a fair and balanced comparison. In the end, it got me leaning towards the R66, despite the U8H being easier to tweak. Now the question is should I wait for the Google equivalent of the R66?
Yeah, I know R646 is last year's Google TV and the R635 is last year's Roku TV. I was just wondering if this year's R655 is gonna get a Google TV equivalent.

Nice work Brother Caleb. For me, it's a hard pass on the Hisense -- the artifacts you (and others) describe make it a nonstarter despite all of its many and varied strengths. Let's hope Hisense shows good sense and upgrades to 10 bit next time around.
Sorry but I really don't like the magnify-zoom cut shots (there must be 100x in this video). It's distracting. If you must, use it at most once every 60s for maximum effect.
Considering I'm still using a 14 yr old 55" 1080p Samsung, I think I'll be fine with either one. Leaning towards the TCL. Wanted to get another Samsung but they don't have a Mini-LED 65" under $1,000.
@@aguyandhiscomputer I'm just your normal everyday dad who loves my xbox.and to me this tv is fantastic. I also have a Samsung qled also and it's easy on par with that if not better. Also the sound is great, it's not tinny. Personally I love this set.
I'm curious why you didn't compare the Google TV version of the 6 series, but I presume it's because TCL is on a staggered release schedule between Roku and Google versions, and the Roku one just got refreshed.
Great comparison, and I appreciate your personal opinion, also. I'm probably more like your grandparents, but I can also hack into TCL and program it, if needed. Despite tech ability, I'm a Toyota Camry type of buyer, so I want quality that is longer lasting. I know you can't compare longevity of new TVs, but my past experience has been that Hisense does not last as long as TCL. Opinions?
Correct . These are basically full steam ahead tvs that don’t last long. (Mileage may very of course) These tvs use cheaper components and on average last 2-5 years . Samsung and LG are better . They are better built and have better baseline quality. Those will last 7-10’+ years .
Hope yours's lasts longer than mine. I purchased mine in 2020 and now have severe black screen issues and the TV is terrible along with their customer service. Please research the black screen issue and you will see what I am talking about.
@@dorriesmith2177 I’m sorry to hear. Luckily my TV is still going strong, knock on wood. My parents bought a Sony TV not long ago (can’t remember the model but, it wasn’t a low end one) and their screen has some awful discoloration. It looks like when you approximate magnets to a CRT. I guess it all comes down to luck. I had a Samsung that started getting bright spots because the lens on the LEDs behind the screen glued off. So far I have had good experiences with TCLs and LGs.
Mannnnnnn, the U8H was looking so good until I saw a bunch of reviews about the shimmer effect. This is an instant no from me. I have a TCL from 2 years ago and it still looks great, looks like I'm going with the R655.
You couldn't give me another TCl TV. The one I had lasted just until the warranty expired. I have a hisense TV now and its played great for the last five years.
What you didn't mention and probably not much concern to most. Roku platform has no way of adding digital channels manually for off air reception. Those of us who use antenna in fringe areas and have stations in different directions this is a deal breaker. Having to do a complete rescan every time you change direction of your antenna is a royal pain. You also failed to mention the Hisense has the next gen tuner already installed and is off air 4k transmission ready. I personally have 2 different cities I can watch, and both have ATSC 3.0 transmitters up and running. True not transmitting any 4K yet but the picture quality with the new compression standard makes 1080P look outstanding. Talking with the engineer from one of the stations they are looking to start some programming in 4K in 2023 with Dobly Atmos audio. The TCL you'll need an external tuner to receive 4K Dolby Atmos over the air and if receiving from 2 different directions will have to do a full rescan every time you turn your antenna.
What do you mean "full rescan when you TURN your antenna "??... turn antenna? What is that???... and why ?.. i am was going to buy the new TCL and i currently watch OTA antenna tv on my older simple led tv...and i never "turn" an antenna, just attach it and scan once. Never used roku before either. Thanks for clarification on this!
Please always show booth tvs comparison at full screen together. Showing half screen is not very pleasant and it make very hard to have look at differences
I originally purchased the TCL. However, the annoying sound issue caused me to return it. It would suddenly begin making a loud cracking noise and then lose all sound. The only way to fix it, according to TCL, was to unplug the TV and the plug it back in. Or, you could do a factory reset. Neither of these fixed the issue permanently. I end up buying the Hisense U8H and have been pleased, thus far.
Hello there great breakdown but a couple of questions which I think are just as pertinent…1) has your research looked into the quality of after sales customer service/support these 2 companies provide 2) are these models available in the UK? 3) in your opinion handling them and using them, what is your take on potential burn in if applicable and build quality ? I still use a crt tv of over 15yrs , German make built like a tank . If these tvs (brand or model) only last 1/5 of that lifespan then it’s a false investment

I got tcl R655 75in because I want realistic look not dazzling look. I would of not liked what you found as faults in the uh8. It just came in today so I did not set it up yet doing it when I get home saw your unboxing and set up video will fallow what you said. I think I made a great choice for the money I spent just wish it had the 3.0 tunner but I upgrading from 1080p so no more waiting the lg just won’t die. So putting it in another room where I won’t be using to much. I also been using Apple TV since it came out since the old tv is dumb. This is smart and I think Roku will be just fine.
Great video there are several others that say U8H destroys tcl and has better color accuracy but they don’t have tools to test so everyone believes them

@@buschg7106 Totally agree! It’s what always draws me to the Sonys. They don’t necessarily pop like most other TVs try to, but they have their own pop in how accurate and nuanced the picture quality is and how good motion looks. The LG OLEDs are just fantastic as well.

I literally had both of these TVs, but the 2020 models. And they both had issues initially. I agree with the comparison with her almost identical where hisense wins out for me, what is the customer service. At the end of the day they replaced my broken unit with a brand new television. Where is TCL kept giving me refurbished b Units that had all kind of issues. So unless you’re buying an extended warranty through the consumer, that I would suggest Hisense over TCL.

@@abitmintier I use Standard HDR I turn the Sharpness to 10 & I put Color on 65 & I forgot the only complaint I have about the tv is FreeSync because it’s kind of wonky but it could be because I have a Nvidia GPU so I just leave it off but other then that I love the tv honestly & the contrast is definitely nice 👍🏿 I got this tv because I couldn’t control the light where I was gaming & I’m coming from a 48 inch C1 Of course it’s not OLED blacks but it’s pretty damn close especially for the $649.99 I paid for it & at that price it definitely punches way above it’s asking price 👍🏿
This is probably one of your better quality videos I’ve seen. I watch most of these, and the level of detail and ACTUAL comparison you did was amazing and I think sets you apart from the other reviewers. Most just say “more bright more better” which isn’t always right. That picture setting adjustability was the first time I’ve ever heard someone compare the platforms in depth, and I think that’s huge to talk about. Keep it up!

Where I live, 4k broadcasts are in trial. Having the 3.0 4k tuner was a huge reason to buy ($200ish 3.0 tuners are available separately). I am also impressed with my 65U8H audio quality. I have a Jamo S809 5.2.2 paired with a 2700H Denon hooked up to my 55U8G in my game room. The 65U8H doesn't "require" a soundbar or AVR like every single other TV I have owned over the last 50 years. Hisense price to performance casts shade on other TV brands as well.
I bought one of the last 32" CRT 480i TVs for my parents many (many) years ago. They enjoyed the picture and whatever noise came out of the TV was just fine. Going back 64 years, I remember watching The Mickey Mouse Club on TV. Over the decades, RCA, Sony, LG, Samsung and Toshiba entered our homes and now finally Hisense. I think Hisense is worth a look when shopping for a new TV.
Your review of the U8G series prompted my first and second look at Hisense.

Third, I watch a lot of DVD movies in 480i resolution and there are also Comcast TV channels in 480i. For example, all the Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Star Trek Voyager, and so many other TV programs are only on DVD. How do these end up looking when "upscaled" on this Hisense U8H?
Finally, there are some models of TV sets when one size such as a 65" is different than a 75" TV. For example, the 65" TV that most places reviewed may have a problem that the 75" TV that released later did not have. That is only a possibility, but that is why I'm asking if you know of anything like that?

I have the 65 U8H and it’s been awesome. I hate the motion correction on any TV so I turn it off. I use it for our family room in our basement and it performs well in bright light and complete darkness. We stream everything and we don’t do gaming so I can only comment on how it handles Disney+, Hulu, Netflix, etc. Movies and live sports look great. I have it mounted and it’s paired with my Yahama soundbar and there is no issue with the sound.
The actual side by side comparisons are great. It is also so nice to see you going strong after such a huge dry spell of new TVs. Thanks for the great content and it is so helpful to those of us on a budget.

I have had TCL tv's for the last several years. I bought the 75 inch, r635 in 2020 and am now having black screen issues. Unfortunately, I did not have an extended warranty and the TCL and Roku customer support was useless. After looking into this there are many complaints about the black screen issue with the TCL''s. I thought maybe I just got a bad one, but I had a 32-inch TCL do the same exact thing. I purchased the Hisense U8H, and it will arrive a day after Christmas. I advise everyone who buys a TCL or even the Hisense to get the extended warranty. I have never gotten an extended warranty in the past but with TV's I will never make that mistake again
Others may have noted this before but for me if you are going to do a side by side comparison of an image you should do a side by side of the exact same section of the image and not a split screen of the full image with some of it on one tv and the other half of the image on the other tv. It leaves me having to take your word for it for example when on the left you show the “shimmer” on the feathers of the bird for Hisense but say that’s not the case on TCL but are showing an completely different half of the image, a half that in most cases has far more light and less contrast. Best if you compare apples to apples where you can. Just say’n.

Getting the 65r646 for $599 at Best Buy was the deciding factor for me. I know there were problems with the Google OS when it debuted but the firmware updates seemed to have alleviated many of those.

Great take. Thx much. No one on RUclips does a better job evaluating TVs than you do; yours are always thorough but still concise and easily digestible for semi-nit nears like myself. Personally I’m leaning towards waiting for larger sized QD OLEDS to hit the market unless my very old Vizio dies first or there’s a Black Friday deal on a 70-80ish inch tv that’s simply too good to pass up. Well done.

Hisense has rocked since inception. I own an old 65h and its outstanding.
I think one important comparison missed is the warranty that comes standard on these tvs. The U8H comes with a 2 year warranty where the TCL only has a 1 year.
With these tvs being so close in comparison and considering the population buying these tvs I feel this is an important factor.
Also another important factor is the anti-reflective coating on the TCL is horrid. Leaves these huge rainbow effects across the screen that I noticed right a way.
More nit picking: the remote on the u8h is better, it glows in the dark and has a find my remote feature (especially important with how small both remotes are)
Finally the packaging on the u8h was far superior. I had both TV's delivered by Amazon and the TCL came defective twice first 3 burnt mini LEDs not a huge deal, second screen was totally black. The foam protecting the u8h was just better.

U8H doesn't do a true 4k 120hz gaming. Please read up on that if you use a new gen unit.

I just replaced a 65" Hisense 65U6G TV that had stellar reviews at it's price point, but it only lasted 16 months before going black. I had the mainboard replaced and it remained black. I won't go into dealing with Hisense customer service on your forum. I chose to replace the Hisense with the TCL 75" Roku 75R655 2022 model. I love this TV albeit for jumping back and forth to adjust the picture nearly to my liking.

Firstly, Caleb I love your videos. I live in South Africa and actually purchased the Hisense U8H but was so disappointed in it I returned it 24 hour later. I'm pretty confident that the model we get in South Africa apart from not running Google TV (it runs VIDAA) does not use the same hardware. The unit I had had terrible "backlight bleed" on the left side of the screen as well as the right hand side corners. This was not what I was expecting from a mini-led TV. My decision to return the TV was ultimately based on the fact that I would not be able to live with this issue (this TV is not exactly a budget TV here in South Africa). I then went for a LG CS OLED. The CS model here in South Africa is an update on last years C1 as the C2 in South Africa apart from being very scarce is super expensive. For customers here in South Africa that are particular about picture quality we have to stick to the brands like Samsung and LG as the "budget" brands Hisense and TCL are not the same hardware that you guys get in North America.
Love watching your videos Caleb! I gotta say though as a guy working a minimum wage job I know realistically I can't afford these TVs. But recently I saved up some Cash and purchased a 50 inch 4k TV upgrading from a 13 year old 1080p 40 inch TV and that jump was a great leap in viewing experience. The greatest thing of all was I was able to find the 4k Sharp TV on Craigslist for 50 dollars. I really enjoy your comparisons to older TVs I would love to see more of that content!
I have both TVs. He is 100 percent correct in all areas. TCL is easier to watch, no sunglasses needed. Hisense can be heard clearly. Roku is better than Google by far for access to media. Google keeps you within their realm too much. TCL daily driver, Hisense when you give a tour of your home.

I would really appreciate some long term, reliability videos on tv's. Doesn't matter how good they look etc. if it doesn't do it for long. I have been guilty of buying the latest and greatest tv's etc. only to have them start having problems after a few years. I also have bought tv's that were considered "cheap" that I still have and that still work great after 15+ years. Warrantys are fine but it is a royal pain to deal with between unplugging everything, boxing it up, shipping etc. I prefer a reliable tv over one with a dazzling picture etc. I see tons of videos about new tv's and how great or not their features are but none on reliability.
So true! And, as far as reliability is concerned, I haven't heard good things about Hisense TVs at all. Would love to hear Caleb's take on that, too.
So agree. I’m still watching my (then) 15 year old high end Pioneer Elite 50 inch plasma. The TV has detachable 15w side speakers that provide great sound (for a TV). Yeah, it’s a 1080p, but it’s still working fine and I’m having a tough time justifying replacing it with one if the TVs reviewed here. The Elite’s longevity has spoiled me, and I’ve read a number of comments of folks receiving new dud TVs, particularly the Hisense.
I wonder which of these two have the better reputation for durability?

@@Naldynator Dude I paid $580 for my Hisense U8H. Let's say it goes beyond 5 years (and that's easily); then I already got my money's worth because: 1. I can replace the same model cheaply, and 2. I will buy a newer TV with better specs. We're talking now and not later, and I'll tell you Hisense smokes the TCL 6 series. You can even check the Ratings review if you don't believe me. TV's will surpass 5 years easily and if you are going to BS me about longevity then go ahead and buy the inferior TCL and keep it for 5+ years knowing you could've chosen the better TV. I'm interested in both TVs. But, I've heard from various BestBuy and other tech store reps that there are always tons of returns, exchanges and dissatisfied customers with Hisense. This is why I'd like to hear more about reliability - not necessarily long term, but more like 1 to 2 years (or right about then time when the manufacture warranty conveniently expires). Is that ok with you? Would you allow someone to question 2-year reliability for a new TV you like, without blowing a gasket about it? Lol!
FYI: I still have a Panasonic V Series television, which still looks and performs great, since 2009. When you buy quality, you don't have to replace things every 5 years. (I also have a Sony A8G - 3 years old, which I hope lasts me just as long; a Samsung UN Series - 3 years old, which I got for free; and a TCL 5 series - 2 years old, which I like very much and don't mind if it gives out at 5 years, cuz I got it for like 300 bucks. I'd like to try a Hisense - but not if it's gonna konk out on me after a year.

I would like to see a top 5 bang for your buck video. Also, Ive been looking in this price range but one thing that a lot of TV’s on the mid to lower price end don’t do is support Dolby Atmos. Maybe you could do a video showing price thresholds for what features you can expect to get for the money you pay.
I have the u8h in a 75. Gaming looks insane. So bright and smooth. My hdr looks great! I haven't seen any shimmer. The only thing I will say about the hisense is that its processing is it's weak spot. I watch a lot of sdr content and it's just not as buttoned up as I would like. Being a 75 inch when I am 8ft plus away from it it's good. But when I walk up closer it's like yeaaa... lol. But I think I'll keep it. I'm coming from a 10yr old 60 inch sharp so you can imagine the difference 😁
I game both on the couch and close up in the computer chair(4ft-5ft). What's your opinion on both HDR and SDR gaming at a closer distance? Also SDR blurays or just streaming was the mediocre experience? Thanks😄
I usually use MKV to put my DVDs and Blu-ray on a memory card, and then watch them on my computer with an HDMI cable connected to the TV. If I did that with this Hinsense U8H, would there be high-quality video? Or would there be problems with "processing"?
@@michaelzoran Depends on what mode you have the TV set to. Nowadays for most TVs they'll adjust image quality and processing based on what hdmi input device setting you have it set to. Setting the HDMI input your PC is connected to to Game Console and Blu ray player tend to get the best color and image processing turned on. Also you could just put the files on a USB flashdrive and connect it to the TV directly since just about every Smart TV nowadays will play MKV files.

I love that Caleb does everyday consumer TVs not just the $2000 Sony, LG or Samsung units. Bought th U6 on sale $549 for the 55 and pulling 625 nits on my phone app
I work in a service department, and from experience i can tell you which brands we see the most.
The reason why these Chinese sets are cheaper than the Japanese brands is down to the quality of the
parts used.
The worst by far are the low end sets made in Turkey for the supermarkets.
As for Hisense vs TCL there is not a lot of difference, we replace the underated components in both brands
with better spec parts to prevent bounced repairs that only last a short time.
Just out of interest i rebuilt a Hisense U8H power supply with higher rated diodes and capacitors, it runs all
day long on our test bench, the customer refused to have it back.
After 3 months of daily use it hasn't suffered the issues that these sets have, so if only they used better parts
their reputation would improve.
The old saying of buy cheap buy twice comes to mind, it's your money at the end of the day.
I love these type of comparison videos and appreciate this coming into the holiday buying season. I think the only thing I would like to see is a further comparison against the Vizio P-series 2023 once that drops.
Appreciate your intuitive overview. Yet...as a senior buyer..you have to understand you have people (A Navy veteran,here) who have macular degeneration or other vision issues. Consequently, all we want is a non tech set that works. Detail can be a moot point sometimes on our wish list. A big enough screen to sit far away and still enjoy a series or a movie. Why don't companies have labels that state...best or good for the elderly or compromised. Better design for the aging population is always appreciated. Thanks for your channel's intent.
Awesome comparison!!! I am glad that I got a 55 inch Hisense U8H. In SDR or HDR I personally did not notice any shimmer that is being mentioned in this comparison for U8H. I also have Samsung KS8000 and Sony X900f and my U8H simply smokes both of my other tvs in picture quality and responsiveness of the UI. I paid alot more for my other tvs but this U8H does not cost alot only paid $649 so it won't be heartbreaking to replace it after a few years.

I would love to see you address off axis viewing capabilities because not everyone gets those perfect seats in a large group movie night or game party!
Just bought the TCL R655 75”, and I hate the lack of settings (or ease of use getting to them), but absolutely have no complaints with picture. 9.5/10 (other than the settings issues)

Never even considered getting TCL till the other day. I was going to get the hisense u7h but after a few ropey reviews I get the TCL and I well happy with it. For the price it's brilliant set.
I wish you can do a follow up on issues of these TVs regarding serious problems. All these TVs come with great features and whatnot but the longevity of these TVs is needed IMO. E.G is it worth it to by a cheaper TV but it won't last longer than five years than a more expensive TV that will last 10plus.

I really appreciated this video. If there was a Google TV version of the TCL that would be an absolute no-brainer for me. I've run into so many frustrations with Roku that I don't think I can ever go back. Most notably, there isn't any formal Twitch integration (at least not within the last 6 months or so that I tried) and screen mirroring has been super hit or miss from my Android phone. I'm glad to hear the Hisense is so close. We added blackout curtains to our living room because our current Sceptre tv had such little brightness, so maybe we can finally let the sun in if we upgrade!
Good video. I would like to see a straight up TV OS comparison. Samsung Tizen 🤮 , LG webOS, Roku, Google, vidaa and so on. Not focusing on TV performance and simply OS. so many people add devices like a Roku or Apple TV but showing what's built in would be educational. I personally was hoping when manufacturers added filmmaker mode it would eliminate a lot of picture setting adjustments but it doesn't seem to be the case.
They seem very similar and i am having a hard time deciding between the two. It will be used for next gen gaming, and streaming apps in a mostly dark room
From what I have read, the TCL will be better for gaming. And, if you're in a dark room, you don't need the brighter picture of the Hisense.
I have the U8H for ps5 and it is the best TV I've ever used for gaming. Definitely a good idea to tweak come color setting and brightness settings which is easy to find on you tube for best setting features. Now I want 65 inch for living room TCL is close but for the gaming aspect I'm gonna have to stick to the u8h for me
I know that you have said that you are only going to review or do comparisons on tv's that are available in the USA ruling out brands like Panasonic and Phillips. That is rather unfortunate in that I consider you Caleb to be the best that I have seen here on RUclips. It also surprises me somewhat that the USA doesn't have practically everything under the sun in regards to consumer products. I live in Vancouver Canada and we aren't nearly as big of a market as cities like New York and LA and we get those brands. I don't care so much about Phillips but Panasonic is a brand that I have seen and believe to be a premium brand that competes very favourably with brands like Sony,Samsung,LG,and others.. Keep up the great work that you do Caleb. I very much enjoy your informative channel.
If you're asking for more comparison recommendations, let's look at some the non-flagships. LG QNED85 vs Sony X80K (or even X90K, depending on price comparison/equivalence)

I'd go with the TCL. The lack of shimmering with better motion clarity makes it an automatic win since I don't mind fine tuning the hell out of a picture to get what I want. Shimmering is death and it's why I hate my current IPS gaming monitor for content viewing. Roku needs to get their shit together though for real.
Before you go with the TCL look up the issues with black screen. I have had that issue with two TCL's and will never buy another TCL again. My 75-inch R635 I purchased in 2020 is now having the black screen issue and I am very unhappy with TCL.
Unfortunately, the TCL 655 is not available in Canada yet, only the 635 or 646 from what I can see. So because of that, might have to default to U8H just due to availability.
I would pick the Hisense it looks better

Great video, Caleb! I think I'd probably go with the more dazzling Hisense U8H being that it also has better sound and Google TV. However, I'm really leaning more towards to stellar color accuracy and motion smoothing of the Sony TVs and I'd love to see you do a comparison video on the Sony A80K 65" (since it's now down to $1700 at most outlets) and the LG C2 65", which is close to the same price now as well. Your wanting a comparison of high end oled vs these mini led? Not a good comparison bro. Of course the A80 and Ce OLEDs will destroy these two TVs. But they are also significantly more expensive.

@@Pidgeys Yes very true on almost all TVs except Sonys OLEDs and Hisense U8H. Those TVs come with like a 200$ soundbar kinda sound. Hisenses U8H is the best sounding budget tv on the market by a freaking mile! It competes with 2-3k TVs in sound and picture quality

This was quite a fair and balanced comparison. In the end, it got me leaning towards the R66, despite the U8H being easier to tweak. Now the question is should I wait for the Google equivalent of the R66?

Nice work Brother Caleb. For me, it's a hard pass on the Hisense -- the artifacts you (and others) describe make it a nonstarter despite all of its many and varied strengths. Let's hope Hisense shows good sense and upgrades to 10 bit next time around.
Sorry but I really don't like the magnify-zoom cut shots (there must be 100x in this video). It's distracting. If you must, use it at most once every 60s for maximum effect.
Considering I'm still using a 14 yr old 55" 1080p Samsung, I think I'll be fine with either one. Leaning towards the TCL. Wanted to get another Samsung but they don't have a Mini-LED 65" under $1,000.

I'm curious why you didn't compare the Google TV version of the 6 series, but I presume it's because TCL is on a staggered release schedule between Roku and Google versions, and the Roku one just got refreshed.
Great comparison, and I appreciate your personal opinion, also. I'm probably more like your grandparents, but I can also hack into TCL and program it, if needed. Despite tech ability, I'm a Toyota Camry type of buyer, so I want quality that is longer lasting. I know you can't compare longevity of new TVs, but my past experience has been that Hisense does not last as long as TCL. Opinions?
Correct . These are basically full steam ahead tvs that don’t last long. (Mileage may very of course) These tvs use cheaper components and on average last 2-5 years .
Samsung and LG are better . They are better built and have better baseline quality. Those will last 7-10’+ years .
I have a TCL R635 and love it. Sad to see that TCL took a step back with the speakers.
Hope yours's lasts longer than mine. I purchased mine in 2020 and now have severe black screen issues and the TV is terrible along with their customer service. Please research the black screen issue and you will see what I am talking about.
@@dorriesmith2177 I’m sorry to hear. Luckily my TV is still going strong, knock on wood. My parents bought a Sony TV not long ago (can’t remember the model but, it wasn’t a low end one) and their screen has some awful discoloration. It looks like when you approximate magnets to a CRT. I guess it all comes down to luck. I had a Samsung that started getting bright spots because the lens on the LEDs behind the screen glued off. So far I have had good experiences with TCLs and LGs.
Mannnnnnn, the U8H was looking so good until I saw a bunch of reviews about the shimmer effect. This is an instant no from me. I have a TCL from 2 years ago and it still looks great, looks like I'm going with the R655.
You couldn't give me another TCl TV. The one I had lasted just until the warranty expired. I have a hisense TV now and its played great for the last five years.

What you didn't mention and probably not much concern to most. Roku platform has no way of adding digital channels manually for off air reception. Those of us who use antenna in fringe areas and have stations in different directions this is a deal breaker. Having to do a complete rescan every time you change direction of your antenna is a royal pain. You also failed to mention the Hisense has the next gen tuner already installed and is off air 4k transmission ready. I personally have 2 different cities I can watch, and both have ATSC 3.0 transmitters up and running. True not transmitting any 4K yet but the picture quality with the new compression standard makes 1080P look outstanding. Talking with the engineer from one of the stations they are looking to start some programming in 4K in 2023 with Dobly Atmos audio. The TCL you'll need an external tuner to receive 4K Dolby Atmos over the air and if receiving from 2 different directions will have to do a full rescan every time you turn your antenna.
What do you mean "full rescan when you TURN your antenna "??... turn antenna? What is that???... and why ?.. i am was going to buy the new TCL and i currently watch OTA antenna tv on my older simple led tv...and i never "turn" an antenna, just attach it and scan once. Never used roku before either. Thanks for clarification on this!
Please always show booth tvs comparison at full screen together. Showing half screen is not very pleasant and it make very hard to have look at differences

I originally purchased the TCL. However, the annoying sound issue caused me to return it. It would suddenly begin making a loud cracking noise and then lose all sound. The only way to fix it, according to TCL, was to unplug the TV and the plug it back in. Or, you could do a factory reset. Neither of these fixed the issue permanently. I end up buying the Hisense U8H and have been pleased, thus far.
Hello there great breakdown but a couple of questions which I think are just as pertinent…1) has your research looked into the quality of after sales customer service/support these 2 companies provide 2) are these models available in the UK? 3) in your opinion handling them and using them, what is your take on potential burn in if applicable and build quality ? I still use a crt tv of over 15yrs , German make built like a tank . If these tvs (brand or model) only last 1/5 of that lifespan then it’s a false investment

I got tcl R655 75in because I want realistic look not dazzling look. I would of not liked what you found as faults in the uh8. It just came in today so I did not set it up yet doing it when I get home saw your unboxing and set up video will fallow what you said. I think I made a great choice for the money I spent just wish it had the 3.0 tunner but I upgrading from 1080p so no more waiting the lg just won’t die. So putting it in another room where I won’t be using to much. I also been using Apple TV since it came out since the old tv is dumb. This is smart and I think Roku will be just fine.

I want honest compares of the TCL 6-Series (R655) and R646 is the R655 an upgrade in anyway. I keep hearing it's a step down.
Great video there are several others that say U8H destroys tcl and has better color accuracy but they don’t have tools to test so everyone believes them
I've heard the u8h has too saturated colors and that the tcl looks better.

Great timing! I've been wanting the TCL for awhile. Finally saw one at BestBuy but the Roku version. I'll have to decide if I want dazzling or realistic.
The dazzling image of my super bright samsung qn85a made me give it away and buy a C2. Always go for realistic the eye strain is real
@@buschg7106 Totally agree! It’s what always draws me to the Sonys. They don’t necessarily pop like most other TVs try to, but they have their own pop in how accurate and nuanced the picture quality is and how good motion looks. The LG OLEDs are just fantastic as well.
I bought the TCL. The fact it has an option in the 85” sold it for me plus i use a soundbar and apple TV sooo rokuOS is annoying but mitigated

I literally had both of these TVs, but the 2020 models. And they both had issues initially. I agree with the comparison with her almost identical where hisense wins out for me, what is the customer service. At the end of the day they replaced my broken unit with a brand new television. Where is TCL kept giving me refurbished b Units that had all kind of issues. So unless you’re buying an extended warranty through the consumer, that I would suggest Hisense over TCL.

I may be wrong, but I thought he said the Hisense doesn't come in 85 inch model at least in the USA.

@@abitmintier I use Standard HDR I turn the Sharpness to 10 & I put Color on 65 & I forgot the only complaint I have about the tv is FreeSync because it’s kind of wonky but it could be because I have a Nvidia GPU so I just leave it off but other then that I love the tv honestly & the contrast is definitely nice 👍🏿 I got this tv because I couldn’t control the light where I was gaming & I’m coming from a 48 inch C1 Of course it’s not OLED blacks but it’s pretty damn close especially for the $649.99 I paid for it & at that price it definitely punches way above it’s asking price 👍🏿
