If you want to game in VR but have $3500 to burn (the cost of the AVP) consider this:
    1. Buy the Quest 3
    2. Buy a Haptic VR Bodysuit or vest
    3. Buy a VR treadmill
    4. Buy a battery pack and custom strap for the Quest 3, as well as a docking station and grips for your touch controllers
    5. Buy prescription/enhanced lenses
    6. Buy a VR Ready PC (can wirelessly play desktop VR with virtually zero latency via airlink if you have good wifi routers in your home.)
Congrats, you still have money left over (assuming you didn't go absolutely state of the art on the PC)

@@stephenbard1590 In fact, AVP is cheap but everybody compares to a totally different product. If you consider a M2 computer is near that price. If you add huge retina monitors, a hundred sensors, cameras, etc… it is really cheap. It is not just a mobile console it is a full powerful computer. Probably more powerful than most of PC out there, and, of course, that has a price.
Just compare it to the Varjo XR4 which it is just the screens and needs controllers, bases and an expensive PC to work.
Of course, the point is AVP, like XR4, IS NOT COMPARABLE TO QUEST because they have different uses and different targets. Stop doing videos comparing two unrelated products. AVP is just another Mac computer version, not a moblile game console.

    • @stephenbard1590

Yes, we should stop trying to compare "apples and oranges". Everyone has the right to buy an overpriced face-computer, even though most people will think you foolish since everything you can do on fun-floating-flat-screens in the AVP can be done more efficiently/comfortably on your desktop. The only reason most of us put up with a headset is because we can "only" do immersive experiences inside a headset. The Varjo XR4 is also ridiculously overpriced, but at least it does the "only-in-a-headset" VR functions.

Finally finally finally a video that shows the true capabilities of AVP vs Quest.
AVP's "Killer App" is the OS. The capabilities. The quality. The experience is definitely better.
    BUT
Doesn't mean QUest isn't also an awesome experience for the masses and the value speaks for itself. Meta quest is first and foremost a GAMING Device and Social Device. Those are the biggest strengths of Quest.
AVP is a media consumption device (entertainment) and productivity device (for work/developers) first and foremost.
Although both can be similar in function, they're completely different experiences. Including the audio.

I don't know if they should. Immersed in cross platform so it does not matter which goggles you use. As a Meta app it would be Meta only I guess which reduces usability a lot. Also Immersed clearly states in the EULA that they do not record any screens or speech. I wouldn't be sure if Meta doesn't do that. But yeah I also don't know whether they record the data going through Immersed. But the cross-platform thing is a real reason to use Immersed for me.

Could you please do a review of some of the productivity apps for the quest vs apple?

  • @stephenbard1590
    @stephenbard1590 4 месяца назад +8

Excellent comparison of the UI/productivity features! Of course, with the Vision Pro all of this functionality can be done more efficiently/comfortably outside the headset! Floating flat windows with a shadow is a novelty, not a necessity. The several AVP immersive environments are so cool because they are high resolution "photogrammetry models" and not panoramic 3D photos. I wish that Meta had a few of those in addition to the lower resolution 3D model homes, but I don't see any on Sidequest either, so Meta may have placed an arbitrary maximum file size on the homes. I suspect we will see more elaborate homes soon to compete with AVP. Meanwhile, you can hang out, walk around in, listen to, and then even web-surf in a large variety of beautiful photogrammetry outdoor spaces in your Quest 3, but you first have to open the BRINK Traveller app. Once you are inside a BRINK space, you push the Meta button on your right controller and then open any "one" of your Meta windows from the menu, so you can use your Browser with many tabs and then switch to any other window, like Store or People. In your next video comparing the "immersive" features, we see that the Quest 3 has an unbelievable variety of VR/MR apps/games including hyper-realistic ones like Red Matter 2 where you believe you are in this futuristic world, and as you actually "walk around", you see realtime dynamic reflections from every surface. This kind of immersive experience can "only" be done inside a headset, and in this case, one with a field of view of 110 degrees instead of the claustrophobic "goggles" 90 degrees horizontal and approx 70 vertical of the AVP.

We fondly remember this game as one of the earliest truly fun VR games from the Oculus Rift days, but it is still great. The only reason it even works on the AVP is that you "head-butt" the "balls". We are curious about whether the game's motion works with the AVP's motion blur/ latency limitations.

You know which features are great technology and what’s ok technology. Before the Vision Pro, Quest users were perfectly fine with the Quest being identified as a VR gaming headset. The AVP is spatial computing with a UI that integrates productively tasks and media productions in a perfectly recreated 3D space. The Quest is best at gaming but all the rest are shockingly bad 2D offerings that are probably less immersive than a 2D large 4k HDR tv or even a iPad Pro.

The actual FOV is smaller because the light shield blocks some. Apple can make different light shields (and head straps too. The actual LENSES show Apple’s edge to edge clarity far exceeds the Quest 3. Zuck rushed the Quest out after Apple’s demo in June and it shows. The Quest is glitchy, causes motion sickness, has a warped, trippy pass through and general blurriness everywhere when in VR. years ago, Apple released the latest iPhone which was super thin. Stories started to quickly surface about the phone being so thin it was bending while in pockets. Hundreds then thousands finally tens of thousands maybe HUNDREDS of thousands of people online saying either they themselves experienced or a person close to them had a bent iPhone. News outlets were demanding a recall, users were furious and threatening to boycott. Apple responded with a press release saying they’d heard the stories too and finished processing every customer service ticket about the issue. All 6 of them. 6. They reminded users they can always contact customer support either online, by phone or at the store if they were experiencing any issues with the new phone. That was Bendgate. EVERY Apple release has a “gate”. I have no idea what makes people so sick. The phenomenon is bizarre and creepy. If “the gates” were a person, it would be an obsessed homicidal stalker. I’m sure some are actually competitors trying to suppress sales but the majority are just people willing to lie about and degrade a brand that really doesn’t even know they exist.
I’m sure for some people the AVP IS truly uncomfortable. I think we’ll find the numbers very similar to all the other headsets. The good thing is everyone has a choice whether to buy one or not. It’s not for you. I am excited! Enjoy your Quest 3

Even without the eye tracking and same broad area of hand tracking, Meta should just totally rip off Apple in terms of being able to open multiple windows and place them anywhere, including locked to surfaces basically, plus some of the more fluid and intuitive interaction for resizing the windows and so on too. I'm a bit late to this but I would also like to add that while the graphics certainly are not cutting edge on the Quest (or any headset for the most part), the immersion you get in VR negates that in a big way. One of my favorite games is Superhot - featureless, monotone, polygonal guys attack you and you have to take them out and time only moves when you do. All the environments are basic and solid white. It looks horrible! But when you are in there.... it is a whole different experience. VR tricks your brain into thinking what you are seeing is actually happening.
Here's an example. I put my mother in VR - a very simple scene where she was standing around a campfire with a bunch of forest creatures. She said she could feel the warmth of the fire. Now.... that's not possible - it's not there! But her brain filled in the gaps and tricked her into feeling a campfire that does not exist. Now, results vary. I have never had anything like that happen for me because I am more aware of what is actually going on, but VR replaces your sight and hearing with its own world - that is a big part of our life experience! A lot of the data we collect about our us comes from sight and sound so, swap them out and it really does put you in a different world.
The original Oculus Rift marketed their software not as games, but as "experiences". And as corny as that sounds, it really is a more accurate description of what a VR "game" is.

  • @stephenbard1590
    @stephenbard1590 4 месяца назад +3

I continue to scratch my brain, befuddled by why Apple would deliberately shoot themselves in the foot by severely limiting the versatility of the AVP by not "also" having proper immersive VR capabilities. Apple's decision to use the high-resolution Micro OLED displays (costing $1000), resulted in the shockingly narrow FOVs and the motion-blur latency that make fast games un-viable. That display decision seems to result from some corporate paranoia that doesn't allow them ever to even mention the expression "virtual reality". So my leading irrational-Apple-explanation is that they are worried that if their new gadget also included VR that it might cause a few of their pampered hypersensetive customers to experience "motion-sickness" and be Apple-unhappy. My theory is bolstered by the fact that Apple has renamed our normal 3D videos "spatial videos", surrounding the 3D image with an annoying blurry border to detach you from the immersive 3D motion. Also the"spatial videos" taken with the iPhone 15 Pro have very little actual 3D "depth". Having shunned The dreaded "VR", and having a fabulous passthrough, this leaves AVP all sorts of opportunities for Mixed Reality apps . . . but we see very few. Hopefully the AVP will soon have some more MR apps so they will have a category of "something" that they can "only" do in the headset! To allow Apple to do some actually "fun" "spatial" (immersive) things with their productivity headset, I envision that MR apps like the Quest "Figmin XR" app would work really well with the AVP passthrough. This app allows you to pin a great variety of unreal things into your real space. You can search/resize/place static or animated Sketchfab models, RUclips videos, and realtime animated audio-responsive Tiltbrush art into real rooms or enclosed VR spaces. You can customize the physics of your objects and even have your controller haptics buzz to the RUclips music!

The extreme parallax between the foreground/background of so-called "spatial videos" in the Apple ads is blatant false advertising. ruclips.net/video/xKxjjlY1Vxk/видео.html Instead of what is depicted in the ads, the "spatial video" actually produced by the AVP is normal 3D video with a blurry frame-artifact surrounding it, and the only parallax is a false one between the dreamy portal frame and the image. Somehow I had the impression that this annoying blurry format of spatial videos is intended to mitigate the 3D depth so that Apple's hyper-sensetive customers don't suffer motion-sickness and throw up in their ridiculously overpriced headset. The AVP and the iPhone 15 Pro attempt to produce the same dreamy-framed format, but the iPhone has less depth because the lenses are so close together. Can you turn off the blurry frame . . . or maybe customize it it to be flowers or somesuch? The only benefit of Apple coining the term "spatial video" is to popularize the idea of saving and methods for viewing the same standard 3D photos/videos that have existed for many years. Even though I think that the blurry frame detracts from the normal crisp 3D video, I am impressed that many users and even reviewers seem to find that the blur instills some sort of mystical "memory" quality to what what is a standard file type that they may not routinely work with. Serious Apple cult manifestations! @@sonicsnake44

Since noone is actually gonna type with one finger, surely everyone trying to work in this would use a leyboard. So the question is, on AVP can you easily use your macbook's keyboard (how a about in the immersive environment?), or do you have to use a separate magic keyboard to get a cut out?
Is it easy to get files from your avp app onto the macbook and back, for actual work? Is it as simple as dragging and dropping?
What about files from quest 3 to PC and back? Would you want/need to? Since productivity apps are only on the PC? Are there genuine full VR design apps on either headset?
What actual productivity apps are on each device? Word excel PowerPoint databases cad apps? Mac equivalents?
Is the 32ppd ish resolution on AVP actually good enough / comfortable enough to do detailed work? What would the advantage be? Are you going to want to do design work like CAD drawings with your fingers? Does a 2d view add anything? Are apple missing the point of a 3d capable device by only providing 2d screens and hand tracking inputs.
In the end is avp just multiple 1440p equivalent screens.
Are you actually better off still doing work on a decent monitor?
Just some thoughts from someone who used to be an engineer! Oh and the critical one! What business is going to let anyone work in an environment they cant oversee monitor or share. My last work made all the workers have their screens visible by management so they could see that people were actually working! I admit that was pretty toxic, but dont you think all the additional windows and social media options next to your work could actually be detrimental to concentration and productivity?

I guess what im thinking is, meta asked the question can you work in VR by making quest pro. People largely said no. Has apple made it possible now? Or is it still a no, not really. Or yes, but it's still not easier / better than what we have now with flat screens? Or are apple just having to ease into immersive working with this half-step. Because 3d versions of the productivity apps and their 3d user interfaces dont exist yet. But you need the hardware first, before you can invest in or make the software.

Happy to answer all of your questions as I had many of the same ones before buying the Vision Pro. I'll go point by point:
Keyboard: Yes, your MacBook keyboard/trackpad will work as input for both your Mac virtual display and any visionOS apps. This is handled by the eye tracking, meaning if you look over at at visionOS app and start moving your mouse, the cursor will appear there as it knows you've switched to focusing on that app and the keyboard on your Mac will then also work for input as well. It's very intuitive and works really well. Copy/paste also works across all of your open windows/apps on both Mac and visionOS (this is called Universal Clipboard).
File transfer: You cannot drag and drop from macOS (like a file from your desktop) to visionOS, but Airdrop works extremely well as a workaround. For instance, I had a 50GB 3D movie on my Mac and needed to move it to my Vision Pro. I simply right clicked on it, clicked Share and then selected Airdrop where my Vision Pro was listed. The transfer for a 50GB movie took about 20 minutes. I've transferred other files as well ranging from 1-10GB and those transfer very quickly with Airdrop, usually between 2-5 minutes, so it's very quick. Not sure how the Quest 3 handles this, but I would assume there's a USB-C port for file transfer. I could be wrong though.
Productivity apps: Microsoft has made their entire suite of Office apps (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.) available on Vision Pro with native apps that work great. There is one problem though... at the moment there is no native Microsoft Authenticator app, meaning if you work somewhere that requires an MDM profile to be installed in order to use Teams/Outlook, you cannot login to those accounts at the moment. This greatly limits how I can use Teams/Outlook on the Vision Pro until Microsoft releases their Authenticator app for Vision Pro. This should be rectified soon as visionOS 1.1 brings support for MDM profiles, but for now I'm just using the equivalent apps on my Mac in the virtual display. For other productivity apps there doesn't seem to be many just yet, so I'm using Mac equivalents in the meantime which honestly is working fine for me.
Resolution: For use as a virtual monitor, the single 4K display that it currently supports (soon adding the ability for 2 virtual displays) looks fantastic. Text is sharp, but not quite as sharp as on a native 4K monitor. I'm 28 and use my Mac for software development, and I'd rate it as being 90% of the way there in terms of clarity compared to a native 4K monitor. In terms of comfortability, I've been working with this as my main display for the past 3 weeks and not once have I had any eyestrain even after 6+ hours of nonstop use. When I tried this on the Quest Pro last year, it gave me severe eyestrain after less than 30 minutes and I tried it for weeks to see if it would get better. It didn't. Another great thing is that since there's visionOS apps for Mail, Messages, and Apple Music, I no longer have to run those on my Mac. I can offload them to the Vision Pro and have them around my space not taking up screen real estate on my virtual monitor. It's wonderful. 2D view is also fine for virtual monitor and viewing content since things look the same as they do on a regular monitor. Hand tracking is also one of the reasons that make this so great for productivity. It makes moving windows around and resizing them effortless. You just look, pinch, and drag. With the Quest Pro if I wanted to do this I'd have to move my hands away from the keyboard, look for the controllers, pick them up, then use the controls to select and move a window. It's cumbersome and when you do that a lot throughout the day, it gets annoying. Overall, I am much more productive and focused when working on my Vision Pro display vs. my monitor (environments are SO good for staying focused and shutting out the world).
Screen visibility for management: This can still be done with a MDM profile on a managed Mac if you're using it as your virtual display. They'll still be able to see your display if they want to, but the only thing they can't see are the visionOS display/apps unless that's also managed by an MDM profile. Either way, there are workarounds for businesses to do that if they'd like to, same as on other Apple devices.
To end, I'd say Apple really delivered on the productivity/content consumption aspect of the Vision Pro. Gaming, not so much, but for me that doesn't really matter as I don't game much. I work during the day and de-stress at night by watching shows/movies/RUclips and for that, the Vision Pro cannot be beat. The displays look incredible for watching any content, and for reference I have a $2500 OLED TV that I bought a year ago which was the gold standard for me. The Vision Pro looks better and now that I've gotten used to watching movies in the environments (watching in Mount Hood puts a 200" screen over the water with realistic reflections of the content bouncing off the lake surface!), my TV just feels inferior. This also ties into the headset audio which is extremely good, especially with spatial audio/Atmos effects.
That about covers everything, but if you have any other questions I'm happy to answer those too.

18:40 - No the critical issue is that people are still to dependant on wanting to use vr controllers when designing the interaction method. Seems hand-tracking, eye-tracking, Tilt5 solo Wand, full body-tracking, and other unique "controllers" are being put on the back burner as people and developers becoming increasing too focused on older control methods instead of embracing newer ones. In relation to VR most of the old methods are quite unnatural yet they are common since just like the back then "new" touchscreens people just weren't used to accepting their naturalness and now we have more reliable ways of tracking hands, eyes, mouth, expressions, body, and more, we just need that "connection" that feels right to strike since human beings are one of the best controllers ever built!
