  • All those home renovation and home search TV shows on HGTV are perfect binge material for lazy and chill weekends. And it’s pretty obvious that the shows are staged to a certain degree.
The ridiculously high budgets of the participants on these shows are just as unreal as the miraculous, overnight renovations of entire houses without showing any crew members. Many have spoken of the unfair labor costs, alleged home damages, fake property sales, and staged drama that are behind all the shows on HGTV.
While viewers are advised to take these fake standards of reality television with a pinch of salt, there are varying degrees of secrets in these shows. These are all the different reasons why your favorite HGTV shows are totally fake.

Nicki Swift you make a living punching the “fake” word everyday into everyone’s brain everywhere... so, the LEAST fake is NOT your ballgame. BUT... you won’t make it, unless picking up scraps under the table, if any.

I enjoy watching the inspiring renovations 👍 how houses in bad shapes turned into home sweet homes
and what the title say about 'fake', well it depends on who we are. Take the Property Brothers as an example, minute 3:20, we should be idiots to think that Jonathan do all the renovations on his own (team), and Drew sell the houses all over the United States. Those businesses have their own areas and 'normal' people would easily know what was really going on about the contractors and the property sellers in the show 😁 they're what we call TV SHOWs
maybe this video should tell people about Dwayne Johnson crashed his car in FF8 is fake

My two favorite lines found in all these house hunter-type shows are:
Walking into an 18 X 18 bedroom and the young wife says, “It’s a little small”
What - did you grow up in an aircraft hangar?
Couple looking at a house’s backyard:
    “Our dog will love this”
What - is your dog helping you finance the house?

Funny story- my aunt’s house was featured on an episode of house hunters as one of the “other two” houses. The realtor featured was my aunt and uncles realtor and she asked my aunt and uncle if they wanted their house to be featured, as the realtor found it to be cute. They agreed, although they weren’t paid, and were asked to remove any personal photos while the cameras were there, and the filming in their house only took 25 minutes as the couple had already selected the home they like and were acting the whole time. However, my aunts home actually sold the next week after the filming

When House Hunters was a relatively new show, they advertised to people buying homes in southern CA to apply to be on the show. I was in the process of house hunting in Orange County, CA and wrote to the producers. As I was talking with them, my realtor decided she didn't want to be on TV. So I told the producers about a co-worker and good friend who was also house hunting and I thought he had an interesting twist: he needed to find a home in the OC that allowed residents to have pot-bellied pigs which are considered to be livestock in many areas. He ended up being on the show. I can confirm that they did not even start filming until my friend had taken possession of his house -- they scrambled to film the initial walkthrough while his friends were waiting to help move his stuff in.
Other fakery: 1) The footage of the 2 houses he did not pick included the house I purchased. 2) He intended to rent a room to a single female co-worker of ours, but the producers at the time didn't want to show a single man and single woman sharing a house, so this real roommate was labeled as simply a female friend helping him with decorating ideas. 3) They both told me they had to do multiple scripted reactions to different parts of the houses they toured, and were asked to be more opinionated. 4) The male "roommate" they showed at the end of the episode was another of our co-workers. 5) They show my friend and the fake roommate enjoying some citrus that was reportedly taken from the backyard fruit trees, except that the fruit came from a grocery store, because the fruit in his trees was full of fruit fly larvae.

I would watch Property Brothers and wonder how is it that someone who is a call center rep and the spouse is a stay at home wife afford a budget of $800,000 dollars or some ridiculous amount of money. I stopped watching it and all other reality shows like it a very long time ago.

Also, Jonathan, the brother who is supposed to renovate the homes, was there maybe two days in the 7 weeks.
They also didn’t move anywhere. The open house was just people from our street. The people looking to buy their house were my other neighbors. Lol 😂

I saw a photo of Jonathan plopping globs of thinset onto the back of tile. Like he doesn’t even know how to set tile. You don’t want dots on the back of your tile. If you’re walking on it, the tile can break where there’s voids or it can pop off the wall/floor, always want good, even coverage.

Also, the homes that are furnished, the buyers “ooh and ahh” all over the place (maybe with a tiny negative comment here or there), but it’s the empty homes that get the most criticism. I watch HGTV and DIY all the time. I just wish they'd bring back some of the variety in the show lineups. Everything's become so predictable
    House Hunters:
"I'm an antique raisin collector. My budget is a modest 5 million."
    Love it or List it:
"Hilary, I want to add an additional floor to my crumbling ranch and a pool. My budget is $21 and a nail clipper and not a penny more. But David, you can go over budget as much as you want if you find something we like."
    Flip or Flop:
"Instead using nice, but cost effective products, we're going to spend as if we're renovating our own home because I don't know how to say no to my ex wife. Btw, I'm going to act like she's necessary to the business as a "designer" even tho we have to hire stagers...yet she has a new show doing just that." -Tarek
    Property Brothers:
"We're going to make dad level twin jokes. Our estimates for load bearing walls are never accurate and will undoubtedly require hiring an engineer later. We'll make your home look beautiful, and at the reveal, I'm going to cry more than you." -Jonathan
    Rehab Addict:
"I'm going salvage junk and sell it to you as vintage. Your house is going to look like a thrift store full of handmedowns. I will constantly remind you how old is better than new but sell you a house that cost the same as if you renovated it with brand new materials." -Nicole Curtis
    HGTV in general:
We're going to get rid of all the shows you liked and give you a million versions of a husband who's a contractor and a wife who's a designer/realtor. Every renovation will have to have "vintage elements" where everything is weathered and distressed. We'll say character and charm and warm in EVERY episode.

HGTV runs local contractors into the ground. My in-laws actually had their house renovated by a contractor here in Waco that worked for Joanna and Chip Gaines. He had almost nothing but bad things to say about it. Claimed the money was good, but work was non-stop 24-7 for weeks. All of his private contracts had to be put on hold and his business suffered for it. HGTV rammed impossible deadlines down their throat and, as a result, the quality of the renovation suffered due to over-worked employees. Said that he'd never contract his work to a TV network again.

Four years ago we hit the Mass Lottery for a “million” dollars. We were contacted by My Lottery Dream Home producers.
We decided to not try to buy a home. The takehome after taking a lump sum and taxes was $450,000. Nothing to sneeze at and I’m very grateful for it, but it’s just not enough for a house in the Boston area. We had some other expenses too.
I watched an episode about a winner of One MILLion dollars in Massachusetts. It wasn’t obvious, but they had already saved about $45,000 for a down payment. It may be easier to do in other parts of the country.

I watched a news story a year or two ago, maybe it was on ABC's 20/20, about a group of bored stay-at-home moms who watched Flip or Flop and pooled their money, probably their hubbys' money, to buy some crap home to fix up and renovate themselves. These bitches had no experience with fixing anything. They were shown wearing dressy clothes and makeup while they were trying to figure out how to swing a hammer. They sold the house at a huge loss. We were supposed to get a lovely renovation in exchange for not charging for the location. Everything was ‘temporary’ and slapped up/tacked up decor that was taken down when they were done. They staged our house to look like a big mess and brought in all these tacky, cluttered, decor pieces to make my home look less attractive. After all the chaos was done, they removed some things but left my house trashed with all their crap. Oh... and I was also left with an ugly crimson red painted wall that I had to redo. I agree. Some good, some bad. But sometimes people will say "I saw on an HGTV show they did_________ on a $2000 budget." And then are disappointed when they find they can't do DIY it themselves due to lack of skill, higher material costs in their area, etc. I still watch HGTV if I'm traveling and stay in a hotel, but that's about the only time I watch them anymore.

And the $7,000 dollar 100 square foot kitchen floor by the conflict of interest brothers, you know, "Buy this dilapidated house so I can get the commission and the my brother who is a contractor can come over and take the rest of your money". i was actually aware of these things. Also, on all of the renovation shows like Fixer Upper, homeowners have to have a minimum renovation budget. I think for that show it was $90k. If the people on First Time Flippers are really that stupid, then that is scary. I get that they aren't all DIYers, but they have ZERO common sense. Also, you can see mistakes have been corrected at the end of the show (completely different floors, etc.) that had to be done by pros. The people must have contractors come in and fix all their mistakes. It makes me cringe that on many of these renovation shows they have people using sledgehammers to destroy perfectly good kitchen cabinets that could be donated to the Habitat Restore or other charity. Also, using a sledgehammer makes more of a mess and present multiple safety concerns. Most (if not all) cabinets are screwed into the wall. It's very simple to take them out with an impact driver and they are intact, no mess and can be re-used. I notice on some of the newer shows now (finally), they actually unscrew them. My husband and I did the demo for our kitchen and took out the cabinets and hung them in our basement and garage for storage. One last thing, being a former Real-tor, I have to mention the one thing that drives me crazy. There are only two syllables in the word Realtor, not three. It's Real-Tore, not Real-a-ter.

    • @rafunderburk
      @rafunderburk 2 года назад

Yours is the best comment on here. I love that you have pointed out the ridiculousness and waste of destroying cabinets that could be taken down and reused, either by habitat or by home owner. And teaching the correct way to say the word “realtor“ is spot on. I hated when my BFF bought a house recently because i had to hear her butcher that word incorrectly 10 times a day. About drove me crazy. 🤣
