Joe, Butch, Jimmie Dale and Terry Allen have been my heroes for almost 50 years. Thank you for this.
Joe Ely is my favorite live artist. He brings a spirit and friendly energy to a show. Been going to his shows since the 1980s.
I've seen him dozens of times over the past 30+ years and man, he just brings it. Every time he comes to town I'll be there, small venue or big. "and tonight, my son ... He's gonna use your car."

Anybody that's any good comes through my town, Santa Cruz. In the 1990's Butch had an evening show, but earlier in the day he played a live radio program (hosted by Sleepy John) that took place in a feed store. While other musicians were playing, he wandered in and sat next to me on a bale of hay. We chatted while he replaced a guitar string. I sez, Can I have that string? He sez, sure. I got a piece of cardboard, asked him to sign it, then mounted the broken string on it. I labeled it, Butch Hancock's broken guitar string, and gave it to a friend that was a big fan.
much better than watching news living in santa fe new mexico means missing a large amount of shows but getting a notable amount of certain others and thanks to terry allen ive seen and met flatlanders many times always awesome bravo! thanks brother otis SJOCR
I was fortunate enough to have met Joe Ely twice, both times at the long gone City Stages Festival in Birmingham Alabama. The first time, Joe played an early slot on Friday, and a thunderstorm rolled it quickly. Having a backstage pass, I found myself hiding from the rain underneath the stage, talking with Joe. What a great guy! He told me about first learning to play guitar in the old home of Buddy Holly. The second time he played City Stages, he asked the stage manager, who was a friend of mine, to find him a guitar tech for his set, just to tune his guitars and be ready to change a string or whatever was necessary. Once again, Joe was as friendly as could be.
Thank you for providing these stories for the general viewers. Tom Russell is worth a closer look. Butch Hancock is an excellent photographer too. ☮
Hi, seems a long time since I've "seen" you. I second that on Tom Russell

Great interview!
Big fan of The Flatlanders !
Saw Jimmy and Butch at the Band on The Wall,Manchester,England…prob about 1990 ?!…saw Joe in Manc too, touring Dig All Night…a fantastic album…Dave Grissom never puts a finger wrong.
Thank you Otis
Super cool interview.
Butch is quite a photographer. Was on a flight with Butch, who had his photo gear with him,and chatted briefly about his work. Easy to talk to, was interested in my knowing his work. Unassuming, easy guy.
Love all the Flatlanders and their solo material also, but one of my favorites is the work Jimmy Dale has done with Dave Alvin. And if you ever happen to get the opportunity to interview, Dave , that dude has some good stories.
I learned about The Flatlanders from the old Imus In the Morning show...😅
Damn good band...
That’s the best thing I heard about the Imus show
@@Clyde6frame Imus liked some good music, gotta give him credit for that. He was a big fan of (and I think friends with?) Delbert McClinton...
Much love Otis..
I a,ways wondered whether there might have been some English teacher in Lubbock Public Schools that I influenced all of those guys, from the same small town who became such proficient song writers???
Check out the video of Michael Martin Murphy singing wildfire on letterman. It’s amazing.
I know a few professional comedians and from what I can tell a lot of them are very reserved and quiet when not performing.
Tom Ruseel's US home ranch as such is outside Santa Fe NEw MExico no u cant have the address well Otis can lol he ends his tours with a show in santa fe fun prickly talented guy i had a blast one time working a little venue he played crawling over furniture to take good care of Tom and his wife and Tom cracked me up with a very specific drink he wanted a specific time which made sense in that the idea was he didnt need to drink like many performers dont while playing so started towards the end to be relaxed enough in the proper mindset to greet fans sign things etc hes got cool art as well as music he gave me a rad Dr Hunter Thompson one! thaks bye SJOCR
nice
hes mentioend three people who live in new mexico lol....visiting Trelingua (Butch Hankcok land in West ish Texas) is a bucket list thing
Butch Hancock is one of the GOATS
Brat talk. Thanks to both of you.😊
👌😎
id say after the pet jokes lessened, lol the greatest contrubitioin to culture Letterman made was stadning by unique different grea musicla choices...even Colert whos monoogues can be great leans other than Prine towards pop dull musical guests to sell honeslty he probaly doesnt have anythiung to do much with picking them by his own choice Letterman clearly did and helped the likes of the names mentioned here and Zevon and Tom Waits and many others that most shows then and certinaly now wouldnt put on thanks bye sJOCR
Cruise cleared these guys out like those pesky body thetans.
tom cruise is everyting wrong with fame celrbtiy hollywhack etc the flatanders are all the things right with music good culture good people
