    Mesh Shaders do not get enough mention! The reason Alan Wake 2 and Avatar look next gen is due to mesh shaders!

    • @deddrz2549
      @deddrz2549 6 месяцев назад

      Isn't mesh shaders how models factor I to the rendering pipeline, not a visual change to the model? Like maybe it is necessary for software raytraced shaders to be implemented correctly or such, but I don't think mesh shaders inherently make something look better?

    • @BurritoKingdom
      @BurritoKingdom 6 месяцев назад +7

      @@deddrz2549 mesh shaders allows the increase in geometry. It's how Avatar has all that dense foliage or in Alan Wake 2 all that micro detail in objects. Without mesh shaders that amount of geometric detail wouldn't be possible on consoles, especially the Series S.
      Nanite in UE5 does something similar but is done in software and has way more restrictions.

    The fact that you can do LEGITIMATE virtual photography in Cyberpunk with Path Tracing and light/materials behave as I would expect (i'm actually a photographer irl) along with the flexibility as far as mods and custom lighting assets (Appearance Menu Mod) means it's still number one in my book. It's just so dynamic.
    Alan Wake 2 was pretty but it doesn't have any of the flexibility of Cyberpunk. You can't disconnect the camera and inspect each object, you can't change the time of day or add your own dynamic lights, and the whole thing is just designed to be EXACTLY as presented and once you complete the story there are no more discoveries. Along with the fact that their 'path tracing' isn't actually doing this from the ground up and still uses baked lighting in many spots. I just played Half Life Alyx and it struck me as a very similar presentation to AW2 in terms of the look of its relatively static lighting, but wow can you imagine Alyx running with full path tracing? Maybe Alan Wake 2 technically has the better graphics from an objective point but i don't think it really used path tracing in a way that really elevated it beyond what Cyberpunk does.
    Avatar, probably never gonna play.

    Surely a game like Cyberpunk, that was released WELL before these other two is naturally going to be at a disadvantage when it comes to graphics? I assume it's much easier to accomplish a better graphical game when you're working from the ground up with technology 2 years (or more) newer than Cyberpunk, while cyberpunk is updating & adding to an already existing core.
    What I mean is, if there's one area that should be predictably better as time advances, it's graphical fidelity & game performance, unlike something such as great story telling which is arguably more difficult to create as time advances.

    I just dove into Alan Wake 2 a week or so ago but haven’t had much time to play it, maybe an hour total. I will say that I’m blown away even on Series X. While Series X lacks the power that the top PCs can achieve, the game still looks stunning. Performance is amazing, rock solid frame rates from what I’ve seen so far, no noticeable dips or performance woes but again very limited time invested just what I’ve noticed so far.

    Seeing Alan Wake 2 on RUclips and seeing it in front of a 4K capable TV doesnt do it justice. Alan Wake 2 is the most gorgeous game ive ever seen detail wise despite the internal resolution being being 1270p in quality mode it looks amazing. My only gripe is FSR2 has shown promise but clearly IMO its meant for next gen of consoles. Performance mode with FSR2 current gen consoles not hitting 1080p60 is unacceptable. Also reflections when looking in the mirror is non existant in Alan Wake 2 but other than that Remedy did an AMAZING job. Cant wait for next gen but clearly the consoles are being pushed to the limits.

On the other hand the hard surfaces like some large trunks, stones and cliffs have that "old-gen" flat look to it. I miss some displacement and a more "PBR look" on those assets. I would have given the first place to alan wake, there is so much detail and attention to detail in this game, and the visuals rarely break up outside of ssr artifacts in some scenes if you dont consider hardware ray tracing (which is a remarkable solution but removes more than half of your fps)
    Outside of the daytime jungle environments, which are indeed phenomenal and purely realtime, visuals in avatar can look like they are taken from games released 10 years ago, especially in indoor human facilities, or regarding post processing, the horendous radioactive bloom effect and the mediocre depth of field in cutscenes. The material reaction to lighting is also pretty poor in avatar, just look at the water or the rocks surrounding it, whereas objects always look how they should in aw2.

      thank you, it really feels like everyone has been paid to not mention how awful it looks in indirectly lit scenes comparatively.
      in those cases it just looks like unlit photogrammetry, and it's jarring to look at.
      and for that reason it doesn't even deserve second place.
      the flying scenes in particular look like literal trash, and they praise it while that clip runs, it looks like a screenshot from an alternate universe where the PS2 could render more triangles.
      the directly lit scenes are amazing for the most part, I'll give them that

      @@RikoFlex67 It does when you fully consider Cyberpunk's shear size and scope compared to Alan Wake II, which is a very linear experience. Cyberpunk gets a bad wrap because of its tainted launch. What the game is now, compared to what it was, is night and day. People who still bash the game haven't even given it a second chance. Now yes, modding isn't the base experience, but on PC we have the option to further the game's visuals than what even the developers originally envisioned.
