I like using the curl talk foam when I “wash now, style later”! Just spray my hair until it’s damp, scrunch in the foam, plop or microplop, then diffuse a little bit. Love it!
Love seeing the 2nd day results, and the refresh is a great bonus! My refresh days are so inconsistent, now I need to try that foam! I do love the NYM gel- not too heavy, not too light and smells nice.
I do agree with you that simplicity is the theme for 2023. I too have simplified my wash days with shampoo, conditioner, leave-in OR curl cream. I'm not a "gel person." As I get older I have less time and energy to do a full routine that includes more than 1 styler.
I just got that curl foam over the weekend and I LOVE it. It really brings back my waves with such minimal effort. I'm newly transitioning and I truly hate 2nd day hair lol. Spraying a bit of water beforehand makes a big difference in maintaining frizz and making the curls more uniform. So glad you tried it out in this video!!!
Courtney please do this with twist I’m debating buying those products but I just want to see it on someone with a similar curl type to me before I buy it
I love the Not Your Mother's Bond Builder line, it has become part of my regular line of products since I first tried it. I have also tried a lot of refreshers and the only one I use religiously is the NYM Refresh Foam. I have actually ended up with some better refresh days than wash days with this foam. It doesn't say to add water, but I find if I add a little water (not a whole lot), it does help more with even distribution and cutting frizz. It does give me a slight cast which I use a light oil to break and it almost always turns great. If it's supposed to be a super windy day or I am concerned about frizz, I might gloss over some gel on top after I apply the foam, but tbh, a little bit of frizz doesn't bother me because it adds to the volume and I find my hair looks more natural that way. But this foam definitely does help with volume too either way! It's one of my faves!
The NYM refresh foam is my faaaavourite for when I have the time to do a proper refresh with more damp hair. I lately have been using it and layer the Umberto giannini jelly on top and been having the best refresh results 🎉
I am transitioning, and my hair tends to be stringy from day one. I do not know what to do to correct it. I love your on brand wash days. They give me ideas as to what I may or may not want to try. Also, I feel for you. Allergies are not fun. I have been getting allergy shots. They have made a huge difference!
I’m just discovering my waves, and said almost the same about my hair, that it just looks straight with an odd bend at the end when in high school, I’m excited to learn what my hair needs for it to be the best wavy possible. 😁
I really like these experiments- I love simple- but I wonder if you think leave in would have helped with the frizz in the last 2 tries? Thanks for being into the science method and trying to control variables!
I found the only thing that gives me great refresh results is my own concoction. I did 1:1 ratio of water and lightweight gel with about a tbl of a lightweight leaven-in in a foaming bottle (just use an empty foaming mousse bottle) . I apply it to dry hair. I don't even bother with mp (micro plopping) or diffusing bc it dried so quickly on its own. When I do refresh, I usually do a half up do & just refresh the lower half of the hair of my head, bc that's where my best curls & waves are. I get so many compliments with my refresh days.
I like the new NYM bond builder line. For my refreshes I normally only dampen my hair to get the curls to spring back. If I add more products I have to wash sooner. (I have medium porosity, low to medium density, fine hair. ) Love your videos!
This video was helpful. So many people like this line but I'm not so sure - about the gel anyway. I have used the foam on a refresh and it does help to reduce frizz if you get the hair damp before applying.
I had fine, pin-straight hair for all of my life, and then post-partum it grew back wavy. Hormones are weird. My hair gets weighed down by most conditioners, but I really liked this one. Its not slimy and it didn't make me feel like I needed to wash my body right after using it. It rinsed out quickly and left my hair feeling nice. I actually like to use the Refreshing Foam on wash days too. Its a lightweight styler too. And then refresh is super easy. Its good stuff.
Thanks for this video! I love the texture you had on day one. Shiny with texture but didnt look oily. Gel didn`t work for me either ,but the foam did. Your hair really looked good❤
Finally, someone with baby fine hair. I have been struggling to find products that work. I may try Not Your Mother’s. I am tired of expensive salon brands that weigh my hair down or dry it out. Ulta really doesn’t understand baby fine hair.
I prefer day two hair with my wavy curly hair. Just chopped my hair too and it's now your length as well. So I'm trying to "retrain my hair" since the curls are more at the ends so been adding a little more product on wash day to help. So I love the NYM brand and the refresh foam and mousse are my favs. I also spray mist my hair in areas that need more refresh product instead of my whole head of hair. Some days just the misting of water and little scrunching are all I need depending on how much product I used in wash day. Also I didn't use as much foam as you used in this video when my hair was down to elbow length. Try this refresh again but mist/spray water where you really need a little help and apply a pump or two to spot scrunch where needed and repeat where needed versus whole head. I try to do as little as possible to day two hair. Day three hair needs more water misting all over and there is enough product to scrunch all over. If I add product it's a refresh spray not mousse or foam. Day four hair ends up clipped/pinned up, ponytailed or washed if too "producty."
I love the refreshing foam from NYM. It's the first product that gave me a successful refresh. I do use water with it when I refresh getting my hair damp helps with getting my curl clumps a little bigger but I do use a lot less product. (Low porosity fine hair here) I've also gotten some surprising refreshes using the curlsmith volume foam. I was at day 3 and my hair was looking tangly enough I needed to brush it out (I was overdue for a trim) and on a whim I lightly dampened my hair and added some foam. When I dried it, I almost had wash day hair. The curls fell faster than usual but I was on day 3 so it was expected for my waves to fall faster. I want to try the bond curl from NYM but I need to use up some products.
I personally love the Refresh foam. It does suprise me how well it works for me as well. I also found Zotos Foam works super well in my hair as well. I have used it on wash days and for refresh days
I love the bond building mask (haven't tried the condish). I don't find it heavy at all, it is thick but once you apply it and add some water it has amazing slip and makes my hair feel so silky. Doesn't feel builduppy at all!
I need to refresh my day, otherwise, it looks all ruffled. However, I just use Cantu Comeback Curl Next Day Curl Revitalizer. I know that Cantu is not everyone's cup of tea. It works for me, though, and I'm grateful. I only damp my hair, apply it, scrunch it, and my hair loves it. If I need more than that, I use a bit of gel on top of it, but just a bit and that's all I do because I'm not big into applying a lot of products after my wash day. And I do the same for 5 days and I start all over again. It took me a while to "master" my own routine because I was in an overload of curly hair content. Then, I sat down and worked with what I had in my cabinet and that's how I managed to do it.
The new NYM bond line is on my list to try! I used to love their mouse and refresh spray when I first started my wavy journey so I'm wondering how it would be now that my hair is healthier. I use mostly curlsmith products now. Loved this video and enjoyed the refresh!:)
The bond building ingredients in this are Hydroxypropylgluconamide and Hydroxypropylammonium Gluconate. If you google those, you'll find articles about their bond building abilities.
And those ingredients are also in Curlsmith's Bond Curl Rehab Salve and Bumble & Bumble's bond building line. The combo of Aspergillus Ferment & Arginine in this Curl Talk line is also bond-building. I posted this info in a comment here a couple hours ago but it has since vanished. Maybe because it included links? They were just to articles about those ingredients.
@@karamyrenfrow5065 Your comment was probably caught by an automatic filter and Courtney probably has to manually approve it when she looks through the "possibly spam" comments.
I am not good at refreshing but I have had some success with the foam. I do put some water in my hands and run it over my hair before using the foam. I had used Uncle Funky's Curl Magic on my wash day and just the water & foam to refresh. I think you should try the foam with some water, even if you are not doing a 1 brand wash day.
I am only 4 months into the CGM and have just gotten to the point where I can go 4 days between washing, but I find I need a refresh around day 3, so I am really looking for good refresh techniques and products!! Thanks Courtney for doing all the heavy lifting!!
Have you tried the Tahitian Gardenia Flower stuff from NYM? I wondered how that compared to the Curl Talk. I use the former with the Curl Talk Gel or Cream (I alternate because if I use both it's stringy city!). I do like that refreshing foam! I'm gonna have to look into that.
I really like seeing the refresh. I only dampen my hair to get the curls to spring back. If i try to add product (it doesn´t matter if it´s gel or mousse) I go from somewhat stretched out but salvageable to gunky feeling WishItWasWashdayAlready hair :/ Also, have you played around with the new-ish Inahsi products?
thanks so much Courtney, and i think you rock the middle part! You always look great though :) I think I have all of those NYM products, I know I love the gel, ...i havent used the foam more than once, and I have not tried the bond S & C yet (i just bought it!), SO i'm going to try them all next wash day! So seeing this vid was awesome! Thanks! 🥰👍
I find NYM a little too proteiny for my hair. I started using Doux mousse def texture foam. It has protein, but does not have the same effect as the NYM. I don’t use a leave in or curl cream. Only the mousse and top with gel.
Is the bond line for every day use? Normally, I use a bond builder once a month or so, so I wasn't sure if this was intended for regular wash days. You may not like the middle part, but it looks great on you.
The NYM product line did not work for me. At first, I thought it was fine, but I eventually realized ithe shampoo and conditioner were the reason my hair was feeling dried out. Once I switched those out, my hair health improved .
East Texas here! My allergies are insane too! What is in bloom?! It's the worst. How does the NYM gel compare to the Aussie Insta freeze gel? I've been using that but I'm thinking of switching it up and I love my NYM mousse.
I love the shampoo and conditioner and use them most of the time, but the gel is way too soft for me and does almost nothing. I have the refresh foam, but haven't used it because I didn't know how to use it. Maybe I'll try it like you just did and see what happens!
I got the NYM curl cream w/rice protein. Shouldn't have. I know I don't need protein (low porosity) but I was curious how the rice protein would work. Hair feels good but it looks more like a curly style that was sorta brushed out.
Thank you for this video!!! Yes to refreshes! Can you test Carina Organics? They're an amazing brand, super good for our bodies (no bad ingredients) and organic all you want. I've been using their hair spray instead of a gel... OH MY GOD that HOLD is insane! I don't understand this magic. That's why I'd love for you to review that brand. I don't know how I feel about NYM. I haven't had the best luck with it. I like Marc Anthony more or less, I'd love to see a one brand wash day for that (after your surgery of course). Prayers for you!
I feel like I'm the only one who didn't like the curl talk foam. I love other foams so much better. This one just kinda felt tacky and sticky on my hair when I tried to refresh with it.
I guess I’m in the minority on this one, but I have not liked a single product from the Curl Talk line. The scent is weird and both the gel and mousse cause my hair to instantly flash dry and seize up. Oh well!
I prefer seeing the standard conditioner in a one brand wash day, since it’s more in line with what I’d likely use most of the time!
I like using the curl talk foam when I “wash now, style later”! Just spray my hair until it’s damp, scrunch in the foam, plop or microplop, then diffuse a little bit. Love it!

I just tried the Bond Builder conditioner this morning and love how it makes my curls look and my hair is SO soft.
The refreshing foam is one of my favorites! My waves don’t hold up well overnight, but the foam makes it a really quick refresh in the morning.
I spray my hair to damp and add about 3-5 pumps on each side before I diffuse.
Tried the foam on dry hair and got curl with a lot of frizz. Will try again with wet/damp hair

The NYM hard hold gel in the curl talk line is amazing for my wavy hair. I need more hold
Love Not Your Mother's products! Thank you for your info.

I just got the NYM shamp and cond after seeing your critique of the Pantene curl gel lol. Looking forward to trying these.
I loved this line for my hair. Unfortunately I am allergic to something in it and had to switch. It smelled so good and had my hair looking fantastic.

Hi I have a question in your next video could you do a video where you shampoo your hair 3 times
Do you have low prosity hair I do
I did! Now it's low porosity near the top! I have past video's when my hair was longer and not highlighted where it was low porosity.
Great video
So sorry the allergies are bothering you. Hang in there!
I think I have to stop watching and I subscribe. The background music is too much.
Same experience for me with refreshing 🫣 I cant scrunch after washday, just glaze a bit water thats my refresh 😅
