- Cabelas Big Horn III - Hot Tent Overnight Winter Camp
Well the time had arrived to finally get my Cabelas Big Horn III tent out in the snow. Little did I know what lay ahead for me.
Unfortunately, I miss judged the snow volume in my normal camping area and was surprised by the depth. Not only this but I forgot my camera gear, I didn't bring my snow shoes or tire chains.
I wasn't going to give up that easy so after many hours of shovelling, I cleared a path for my truck and a large enough space for my tent.
Hope you enjoy the video :) Sorry It was a little short!

Nice tent/camping set-up. Thank you for taking us along, Michael and Esme.
Thanks Shovelhead8!
Nice video. Life in the outdoors is better then city life.
You got that right!
Thanks x10 for making this video. I am confined due to illness. Watching you “out there” keeps me alive “in here.” You and those like you are amongst the best medicine in the world.
Thanks John - I'm glad you enjoy the videos and Esme and I wish you all the best! 🐶
Well done on sticking with the plan in difficult snow conditions. I love the tent.
Hi Eddie - lots of work but lots of reward too! :)
“Failure” is relative. You weren’t in a stuffy office!! It’s awesome how much you can get out.
Hi Michael - These are true words - I sometime forget how lucky we are to have all this space to play in!
Good show
Nice video, thanks for sharing. Nothing like a wood stove in a tent. pup seems to enjoy it too!
Wood stove and winter are a great - they take work but the rewards are great. The pup loves the outdoors, she very much a winter dog :)
Even with the challenges it still looks like it turned out to be a good time for you and Esme. Thanks for sharing Michael
Thanks Mark - It was an enjoyable trip! Do you plan to do any winter camping this year? I'm excited to see the wool blanket in action!
Even from the comfort of my home, seeing that fire burning in the stove gave a real sense of comfort and safety. Fire must touch on a a very primitive part of our psyche. None the less, you looked utterly knackered! What a weekend!!
Hi Richard - Yes there is something primordial about fire, it's heat, safety and entertainment - I can sit for hours watching and feeding the fire just allowing my thoughts to drift - I'll recover long enough to get back out there next weekend! LOL
August 30 2020, Love your winter set up... thank you for all your hard work digging!
Glad you enjoy it Angela! 👍
I enjoy your sharing of your experience.Great work!
Thank you Barbara for taking the time to comment! :)
What an awesome set up. It's like I'm there... but without all the work! Thanks for Sharing.
Thanks Faith - that was a great tent but lots of work for 1 person in the winter!
Great video, Esme didn't look too thrilled with all the snow, I think she wanted to stay in the tent while you went for wood ,LOL!
Hi Darrel - I bet she did - I don't blame her. Next time I'll pick a spot with less snow for her :D
Hi again, Michael- seems we picked the same time frame to field test our tents! I just got back from 9 days in the White Mts. with my pups and the BH3. Not much snow, just a few inches the first few days, but plenty of wind (gusts up to 50 mph), and the tent lived up to Cabela's claims. Got a few pics I posted on my channel. Doesn't show it, but I added the vestibule on the 3rd day. Highly recommended for extended stays!
Hi - Just watched your video - some beautiful pictures! Looks great! I still haven't used the vestibule but I can see it will work great. The tent copes well with all the weather I've come across so far - it's definitely built solid!
Man, the toys you get to play with. Great adventures, great videos as always.
Thanks! BTW - loved the Paiute Trail series - great work on the videos! - I wish that was closer as I'd love to explore that area! Best wishes Michael
Thanks. That would be awesome if I could get you down to Utah. September 2018 is in the works if you could be convinced!
It doesn't take much convincing for a trip like that! - I'd make the 18 hour drive to come and explore with you ;) Let me know closer to the time - Best wishes Michael
Looks like you did fine. I like the dig captions!
Thanks Brandy!
Even the worst of days are better with your four legged friend
Indeed they are Rick!
After years of wanting this or the alaknak I can not make up my mind. Love that tent
Its a tough choice! 🤔
Love your honesty. If you screw things up a bit, admit it, learn from it and move forward just a tad smarter. Been there, learned from it, and then laughed my ass off over it.
Yup - If you cant admit your blunders in life you will never progress - Thats something I learned throughout my life 😊 Thanks for commenting! Best wishes Michael & Esme!
Another great video. 😀 Esme looked like she "loved" the deep snow. Lol. My border collie dislikes the deep stuff, but the chesador retriever loves it.
Hi Brian - She likes the snow but I think that was a little deep for her tiny legs - lol. I love nothing more than seeing dogs jumping and enjoying the snow - and people say they don't have emotions like we do! :D
Well done Michael, keep safe, I liked the tent setup.
Thanks Graham - it's a great tent but not for 1 in winter! lol
Awesome,and loving the beauty
Thank you!
So jealous looked like an amazing time some of my greatest trips away have been when I've forgotten some important things but its about making do love your doggo my main camping partner is a four legged fella best companion for camping really enjoyed your videos of last few days have subscribed cheers for the great vids
Hi Kaiser - Camping with a dog has to be one of the best things to do - we both look forward to camping. Thanks for the subscription!
Great video. Looking for that inspiration to get out of the house for a long winter weekend here in AK...just found it. Thank you
Thanks! Thats the main aim of the channel is to encourage people to get out more! Enjoy the trip! :D
Nice tent. The stove is really good.
Thanks Tom - I was pleased with the results!
Your poor dog must have been exhausted at the end of the day! Great video- I enjoy them, thank you!
Yup - we both were - lol
Looks soooo nice
Certainly was! 👍
thank you for a nice vido and your wonderful dog needs a sled for the deep snow haha. ;)
Lol - thats a great idea! Keeping her in it might be a task though!
Great video!
Thanks Diddley!
I love your videos
Thanks 👍
Nice , it’s a toss up when it comes to winter camping bigger tent with stove or small tent no stove .Got snowed in once for 5 days having heat was great , made life so muck better . Was camped near an aspen grove with standing dead aspen could not have worked out better as far as firewood. Downside of big tents longer setup and tear down , upside room for all your stuff including pets and stove .
Happy Trails
Thanks Mike - 5 days snowed in sounds awesome as long as you have food and some beer 😉 I now camp with a smaller tents and a smaller stove - works great for me now 👍
@@TheEmporiumOutdoors have been looking for the perfect setup fo 50+ years and with any luck will keep looking . Nothing better to be out and having fun .
Happy Trails
I think you misunderstood Esme. The proper translation wasn't should we move someplace warmer, it was pick me up Daddy, I don't have snowshoes either. I'll have to go back and watch the entire series because I really like that stove build. Thanks for sharing. It means a lot to us to see the experienced guys doing it right.
Thanks Michael! I'd love to see Esme with snow shoes! LOL 😄 Hope you like the stove build, I put a lot of thought into it and it was a good solid stove in the end! 👍
One good thing about that trip. Next time you get a physical from your doctor you can skip the stress test. if all that snow digging didn't do you in your heart must be in tip top shape.
LOL - trial by fire I guess :D I'm not as fit as I once was but I'm more stubborn :)
Esme is a real trooper. Maybe a faster setup and take down type of text would be good hopefully for this upcoming winter for you both. And enjoy the time inside with that nice hot stove. Glad you finally had fun. Thanks for sharing. Always good to see Esme. Til the next video.
Hi Alice - We did move to a Snowtrekker tent that is much faster for the setup in winter (ruclips.net/video/T_DMdg-gY3c/видео.html) Thanks for the very kind comment! Best wishes Michael & Esme
Good video thanks
Thanks Solo!
Looks nice. I'm in Edmonton, cheers
Hi John, I'm not too far away - I guess they got more snow west than i thought!
Esme says " you think you got it bad in this snow. Your private parts aren't dragging in the snow!"
LOL - Thats a very good point! 🐶
Short video is still better than no video. :)
Thanks Martin - I'm always torn on how long people like to watch. Personally I can watch a 10-15 minute video anytime - but for 30-60 minutes, I have to make time to sit down and be in the right frame of mind to watch them. Both are enjoyable but one is easier to consume. I'm not a fan of multi-part videos for one trip either :/ What's your thoughts?
Esme is saying “Nice bed- where are you sleeping...”
Thats exactly right Tom :D
Out fit your side by side with a snow plow, never mind that shovel. I look forward to your video's.
That would be nice - but I'd need tracks too in this terrain :/. Glad you like the videos :D
Areet there matey, are you from up North UK.
Great video btw, wished we had snow like that here in Blighty
Hi Little Bull - I was a long time ago. I left the north to join the military and just kept moving on :) I've been in North America for about 10 years now but lived and worked all over the UK and parts of Europe. Snow in England is wet and heavy - just feels colder there for some reason - lol :D Best wishes from Canada!
I do like the Big Horn tent but, like you say it can be a chore to erect especially if you are tired and sweaty. The poular thing here in Alaska is, using ice tents with a stove. It takes only a couple of minutes to put up and secure. I am trying one this year. Have you ever thought about booties for Esme?
Yea - Ive seen a few people use them on RUclips and I'm tempted to try one! Great idea. I've tried booties over the years with Esme but she just hates them. Ive moved to mushes wax for her feet and it seems to work very well. 👍 You will have to let me know how the ice fishing tent works out for you!
Your dog is very sweet!
Thank you - she's a wonderful friend!
If you wanted to, could you add a metal container to the stove pipe or on the side, like I’ve seen on other stoves, to keep water already boiled? Maybe it’s not worth it unless you were going to be out for several days I guess. Nothing like being warm in a nice tent out in the woods. Esme‘s lucky. I think you read her mind perfectly. Thanks fir sharing.
Hi Alice - Yes I love the heated water tanks but you have to make them out of stainless steel. Unfortunately I can't weld stainless :( I may buy a pre-made one in the future. Always got to have tea ready - don't you know! :D
I like the video and am interested in a tent like that for when I go fishing in the very late winter for steelhead. How long does it take to get set up?
Without snow on the ground a single guy can get this done is about 20 minutes. With snow its about double.
That was not a fail but a good lesson
Thanks for being kind :) Hahaha
The Emporium You have a new sub too sub me back when you can. ATB. Coaster
I agree too much work for one guy. I had a 12x14 tent and after building the poles and setting it up that was it way to much work... My set up is small now.
Yup - We live and learn 😉
what jacket is that fleece? Looks super warm!
Hi Ian - Its the Helikon-Tex Patriot Fleece Jacket (ruclips.net/video/Z6YhunIJzYY/видео.html) - I have 2 of these and love them. They are warm but not wind proof.
I agree with the dog!
:D. Thanks!
I have the same BH3 and a wilderness 4 stove. The vents in the side wall near knee level allow a very strong draft that is not very pleasant when sleeping. I’m sure it’s a safety issue but you can not close any of them. Just returned from a 7 day hunt with temps low 20°F to upper teens each night. Curious if you had the same or similar issue with your BH3?
So yes - I did notice the same thing and I did seal off the one near my bunk. You obviously do need airflow but the other vents more than compensated for the one I closed. I've seen other people do the same on RUclips. Hope that helps.
you need the russain bear tent easy to put up and triple lined walls and floor and easy to put up its like an unbrella
Thanks for the tip Scott - I've seen them 👍
You need to bring Esme down here to Texas and let her thaw out. Was 104* here today along the Blanco River 7/18/18.
Wow thats a nice day on the river! We have been getting in the high 90's this week. My part of Canada can swing from +40c (104f) to -40c (-40f) during the summer / winter. We have snow on the ground for around 6 months, with the last melting away in May. I'd like to visit the southern states one day and Texas is on my list ;)
Been looking to upgrade my tent. Cabela's branded tents are missing from their website. Anyone have insight on this? Hope they didn't abandon them, i love the Alaknak style.
You are right they have disappeared! Very odd! All the tents are gone but 1. I think this is just a website update. I don't think they are gone for good 👍
@@TheEmporiumOutdoors I hope you are right, or the Covid buying spree everyone went out and bought tents this summer. Fingers crossed. BTW, fun video.
@@sppeders1 Hope so too! Thanks! 👍
Ever have probs with condensation in the winter?
Hi Fraser - No condensation - Some ice forming on the outside due to the heated tent. Hope that helps.
And snow shoes my friend...
They were at home with my camera gear & tire chains :)
Nice setup!
How long does it take on average to set the tent up?
Also, how's the temperature inside the tent (if outside is cold, say -15 Celsius) with the stove working?
I'm thinking of getting a Big Horn and using it from December to mid-March for rabbit hunting here in Quebec.
I have a small pop up trailer but I'm afraid the tarp material will tear in the cold.
Hi Stanley - The tent takes around 20 minutes to setup in the summer with one guy. In winter everything takes longer - so double that time. Two people would make it much quicker. With the right stove you could easily get to +20c inside with -15c outside. Packing away the tent in snow and ice was more of a challenge than putting it up. Its a pretty heavy tent (80lb) and with ice and snow on it - it was heavy! I moved to a Snowtrekker tent, which is smaller and much easier for deal with in snow. I have it on my later videos if you want to take a look.
@@TheEmporiumOutdoors Hey Michael,
Yes it does seem like this would be a lot for the "weekend adventurer" like me :)
The Snowtrekker looks good - and it seems easier to put up and store away. Especially the fact that you can fit your whole gear on a sled!
Thanks for answering my question, appreciate it!
Im debating between this tent and the alaknak 12x12
Hmmmm tough one 🤔
Short but still a nice snippet of the breathtaking scenery. Was there a floor to that tent, or did you spread a tarp down? I noticed the little vent flaps near the bottom of the tent and thought maybe there is a floor. Thank you. ⛄
In this tent there is a full floor - I did put a tarp under the tent also and I'm glad I did. The tarp was stuck to the ground the following day! 😞
Can you or someone explain the difference or the reason why some people use hot tents with a floor and others do not have a sewn in floor?
Michael I do enjoy your videos btw! I bought a similar Fjallraven (or however you spell it) hat as yours in another video.
Hi Robert. I can try and explain the floor vs no floor for you. Typically winter specialist tent do not have a floor (Snowtrekker etc) as traditionally, spruce bows would be used to line the floor and insulate the tent. This also allows for people to keep their boots on and not worry about tramping snow or melt into a sealed area. Small amount of snow or wet simply shake through the bows. Additionally, with a floored tent over a few days of heating the tent and re-freezing the floor of the tent can get frozen to the ice beneath, making packing the tent very difficult. The Snowtrekker for instance can also be much lighter with no floor. The Big Horn III is more of an all round tent that can also be used in winter. I would place a tarp under the tent to stop the floor freezing to the ice - so a double floor. In my Snowtrekker, I use a couple of heavy duty Oxford mats in the areas I sit or put equipment and the rest is open. In summary - you don't need a floor in the tent if you use it in cold temperatures where the floor won't melt :) hope that helps. How do you like the hat?
@@TheEmporiumOutdoors I love the hat! I went with the Woodsman Cap because I liked the idea of a brim to look out under when sunny or windy. I was toying with the idea to purchase an old canvas tent and cut out the floor but then I saw this video and questioned the whole thing. I can't imagine going anywhere but my back yard for now and didn't want to spend a lot of money for that experience! Still might try it next snow storm.
Very cool - thanks for the reply!
Michael, I have purchased the bighorn lll with the vestibule and have used it twice already. My question for you is did you block the vents during cold weather as I have seen other youtuber's do?
Hi Keith - With the stove running no as you need that venting to keep safe. But if you are just cold camping it or are shutting the stove down for periods - Yes I would block some or all of the vents. I had no issue with condensation. Its a great tent!
Probably would be easier to shovel a path to the trees for wood, especially for your dog.
Or have some snow shoes with me 😉
Hi awesome vid. Hey is your tent made of polyester or canvass?
It’s a oxford nylon, not canvas 👍
@@TheEmporiumOutdoors okay thank you. Sorry I’ve got to ask what the Oxford nylon is? Is it like regular tent material, like a polyester or is it thicker or something?
That is a serious tent for one man and his dog. A nice tent but putting it up must be hell.
Yup - You got it. It was way too much for just short trips. The snowtrekker is way better for one man and his pup 👍
Send me the link to buy this please!!
Sorry - I don't see it on the Cabela's website any longer 🤷🏻♂️
Windows wide open with the stove on? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose? Just curious.
They are a plastic windows so they may look open but are closed. There are lots of vents on this tent and you need to keep the airflow going to ensure the stove will be safe! Hope that helps!
We're may i purchase this tent and stove
HI, The tent is available from Cabela's (www.cabelas.com) and I made the stove myself. The are stove also available from Cabalas that match this tent!
Sweet.
Sweet and heavy
@@TheEmporiumOutdoors you're an ex-military man. Piece of cake.
Is this tent able to be put up by your self
Yup - I did all the setups and take downs alone. I would recommend 2 people in the deep snow - but tis doable just takes longer!
Esme had California on her mind....
Hi Mustang - Yup I think she did! Are you still planning to head up north soon?
The Emporium No I wound up passing on the job, couldn’t make the timing work. I’m actually set to move from Louisiana to Texas and the Ft Mc work needed to slot in between.
Where did you get the stove?
Hi Luis, I made it - There is a 4 part series on my channel detailing the whole process. ruclips.net/video/J1ssce7NiSQ/видео.html
Dose it come wit a stove
It does not - but they do sell them in the store!
Is there a reason you never say what part of Canada you're in ? I can understand you not wanting people dropping by your favorite campsite but you could at least narrow it down to a province or territory. It's driving mu buddies and I nuts trying to figure it out.and we have a small bet on who's closest. Lots of bush, mainly fir, with plenty of snow but fairly flat, don't see any mountains or big hills so I'm guessing northern Manitoba or Saskatchewan
Hi Thom - Ive mentioned it many time in the comments but for many views abroad, telling them the province would not help them find it on a map 😃 I'm in Albert and camp about 2 hours west of Edmonton mainly. On some videos you can see the rockies 😉 Where are you in Canada?
thumb up.
Thanks Linda! 👍
I have one of these tents. When the wind picks up and if there is any rain or snow, it comes directly into the tent via the air vents at the bottom. There is nothing to close them down. Even with my stove being fed very often and kept in hot, the vents at the top and thin wall made it a true nightmare. It ruined our camping trip. There are many tents available at cheaper prices. Cabelas do Not back these problems or have any resolutions.
Thanks. I also found mine was hard to repack after bad weather. I hung mine for a couple days in the shop to dry it out. I will also be checking out other tents as these are NOT meant for long term cold weather. The stove must be hot continuously or it get cold instantly. Understanding it needs some ventilation when burning wood, these tents have way to much ventalation that can not be controlled to stop wind nor can it be erected in a direction to avoid wind blowing through the tent. Hoping to find one with a liner or a cover. That would help tremendously. Enjoy the outdoors and thank you.
@@gensherman2984 My self built stove was made with 3/16 plate steel and held the heat well - But I agree the design is not suited to very cold temperatures. Take a look at the Snowtrekker tents www.snowtrekkertents.com - I highly recommend them. Best of luck!
Thanks. I appreciate the site.
What tent is that ?
Hi Larry the tent name is in the title. Cabalas Big Horn III tent.
Would u sell ur tent
Already sold - sorry 👍
what a camera you use ?
A Sony AX33 - great camera for RUclips.
thanks
Who hasn't made those same packing mistakes? There's just so much to pack, especially in those conditions. Do you worry about your dog getting taken by a predator? Mine likes to wander off on her own. I tied a bell around her neck.
Can I buy your stove?
Sorry - Already sold it - plus it would be too heavy to ship :)
@@TheEmporiumOutdoors would you build another one? By the way awesome work
Probably not but I can send you the DXF files if you wanted to have one made locally. Just email me via my link on my about page.
@@TheEmporiumOutdoors how do I contact you through RUclips?
It is always better to put on tire chains before you need them. Lugged chains are the best on ice. Other gear is usually needed to get yourself unstuck.
Totally agree 😄
Get a tee pee tent.
Hi Ben - I think i'm going with the Snowtrekker EXP Shortwall - www.snowtrekkertents.com/shortwall.html - I have a tipi tent already and although they are great - they have limited room for winter living.
OK. I like that one too.
I found one that is 8'ft at the top? No bottom but you can use pine bows if you have an area with enough of them and make a nice floor. Or just pack the snow down with your snow shoes. Much easier then shoveling snow and with that stove you build it should be cozy in what ever you choose. Any way. Love your channel my friend. If you're ever in Phoenix AZ let me know the first round of pints are on me.
I will try to find that one I liked again. I think it was at bass pro shop here.
All that work for 2 days ain't worth it man you got to stay a week 2 weeks
Yup - You are right! 👍
YOU GUYS THINK IT'S SO FUNNY WHEN YOU BRING YOUR DOGS CAMPING WITH YOU WHEN IT SO COLD AND SNOWING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WELL THAT POOR DOG WAS MISERABLE YOU COULD TELL . YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF .......THAT'S ANIMAL ABUSE .!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARE YOU THAT SCARED TO STAY THERE BY YOURSELF IF SO THEN STAY HOME..........THAT POOR DOG
You know nothing about dogs or Canada. Esme (the dog) was born in these conditions just like all her ancestors. They have become hardened to the conditions and although this looks cold to you it's not. Esme will sleep out in the snow during the winter when at home by her own choice, she has a dog door to come and go as she likes during the night. Esme has a rich life with me and we camp all through the seasons. She loves the outdoors and camping. Please don't be ignorant to how other people live and do some more research.
