Half an hour ago I had never heard of Makaton and thanks to Mandy's superb (and fun) explanation I now know ten signs... now to find someone to use them on!
This is excellent. Please remember this is Makaton, not BSL. There is a lot of common ground though. Personally I find Makaton a great foundation for building communication
I note that Stewart commented that some of the signs are wrong. As you know Stewart BSL has regional variations. I can assure you that these are the signs given to us by deaf people and deaf tutors from various locations all over the UK during our 25 years plus of professional sign language interpreting. We had to choose one sign for each word in this video, but agree there are others being used by deaf people - that are not wrong but just the local variations/dialects. It is great that there are these variations just like in spoken languages - it makes BSL a richer fuller language.
Hi there im trying to learn Makaton to communicate with my non verbal son and id really like to know the sign for death, dead, dying... i know its not the most the upbeat word but very important thanks
Hi. with a child with sen she comes home signing alot and I dont know what she means. This is a great idea for when I dont understand what she says, I can see her signs instead!!

For anyone reading when doing signs like medicine try not to obscure the view of the sign e.g finger inside the pill pot
👍
What does pointing with your index finger to your temple mean (if anything at all)?
It means THINK
Pan
