    In this short animation, I explain the basic concept of shutter speed, from the actual shutter actuation process to the different effects that shutter speeds can produce. I hope by watching this video, you were able to learn something new, and better understand shutter speed and why it's so important in photography.

    Everyone's a photographer, until Manual Mode. I want to become a Manual Mode photographer.

    • @Apalapse
      @Apalapse  4 года назад +26

      Manual mode definitely helps although I would actually disagree with the "everyone's a photography until manual mode" assumption. In my experience, in many cases aperture and shutter priority mode save time and needless effort and work in the majority of shooting conditions. Manual mode is definitely helpful but I think beginning photographers think they need to jump right from Auto to Manual. This is fine if they want to immerse themselves but it will be frustrating for sure. Manual mode is useful but I find program modes to be more important in everyday shooting.

    • @BonesofStarlight
      @BonesofStarlight 4 года назад +5

      @@Apalapse It was something I actually read on Instagram. Of course jumping straight into manual would be hard, but understanding your exposure and how your aperture and ISO affect the image (especially with light and the way it is read in the camera sensor being different from the eyes ) is very important. My husband, a photographer for 15 years, suggests that learning manual mode's basics is the best place to start in order to get a grasp on that. Thank you so much for your response!

    • @Apalapse
      @Apalapse  4 года назад +9

      Of course! And what your husband suggests is great advice. I think all photographers should learn manual mode just to get a feel for what their camera can do, how it responds to setting changes, and as they become familiar with the push-pull nature of camera settings they will realize how photography works. It's a bit teaching someone how to swim by throwing them into the deep end sometimes, but it's an effective method.

    • @mommaminga
      @mommaminga 4 года назад +2

      That's my goal too. I have done my last three photoshoots in manual mode, and now with these videos I can't wait to shoot again and apply what I've learned😀🙌

    • @Apalapse
      @Apalapse  4 года назад +4

      @@mommaminga That's great to hear! Manual mode is definitely helpful to learn photography fast. When I was learning photography, I forced myself to use manual mode all the time, and while I don't necessarily think it's required all the time (in fact, sometimes it slows me down!), it is super beneficial to learning photography. I am glad these videos are helpful to you, too. It really means a lot when I get comments like yours. My goal with this channel is to help photographers learn and be successful, and I am glad you are applying what you have learned in my videos and finding success. Does over exposure of the shutter speed have a side effect on your camera?

    • @Apalapse
      @Apalapse  6 лет назад +1

      Nope. The camera can handle any shutter speed length. The only instance I can think of a long shutter speed damaging the sensor would be if you were taking telephoto shots of the sun without a solar filter.

    However, I found the voiceover to be extremely annoying (for a lack of a better word).
    Maybe it's just me, but I found the pronunciation to be somewhat "off", usually towards the end of a sentence. It's as if the voice actor was using too much air which made the whole thing feel a tad overacted throughout. Now that I have heard it a couple of times I cannot un-hear it anymore :(

    Is shutter speed only applicable to photography? I mean what about videos. Does a camera with 1/8000 shutter speed be better than 1/4000 camera for videos? Sorry if the quesion is silly.

    • @Apalapse
      @Apalapse  3 года назад +3

      Not a silly question at all! Taking video is essentially just capturing a bunch of photos quickly then compiling them together in-camera, so yes, all the regular camera settings apply, including shutter speed. There's no bad or good shutter speed for video, inherently, but depending on what you're shooting you may want to use certain values, like most filmmakers will set their shutter speed to double their video framerate or for slow motion, have the shutter speed very high so action is frozen.

    • @Apalapse
      @Apalapse  4 года назад

      Yes. While you are recording you can usually change the frame rate (shutter speed) of your video. This depends on the camera you are using, though, since some cameras don't have that function. Usually it's best to set your shutter speed to the frame rate of your video. For example, at 24fps I will keep my shutter speed at 1/24s.

    Why can't we freeze frame using slow shutter speed

  • @MiottoGuilherme
    @MiottoGuilherme 4 года назад +1

    The video is great. But I think it mixes up the terms shutter speed and shutter time. Second is not a unit of speed. And there is no such a thing as "long speed". It is not physical.
    But of course, here speed and time are of related concepts: high shutter speed means short shutter time.

    • @Apalapse
      @Apalapse  4 года назад +1

      Yes this is often a misnomer in photography. The terms "Fast shutter speed," "long shutter speed," "high shutter speed," and "low shutter speed" are a little confusing sometimes. This is why I say in my new videos, "quicken the shutter speed," or "lengthen the shutter speed." Also to just get rid of the shutter speed name altogether, you can just say greater or lesser/shorter or longer exposure time, which is essentially the same thing.

    i don't understand existence of shutter really matter as in live view mode the sensor is full open receiving light..not over expose or something...we really need an electronic shutter

    • @Apalapse
      @Apalapse  4 года назад

      Mirrorless cameras use this feature when they shoot in "silent mode," and that's how cameras record video. In silent mode and video the sensor is simply taking photos normally, just with no shutter mechanism firing. The mechanical shutter is dying, I think, and sooner or later we will see completely electronic shutter take over.
