  • When Dreamworks Studios debuted Shrek in 2001, they broke the mold for animated family films by including edgier humor and pop culture references designed to appeal to parents as much as their kids. Shrek films are packed with celebrity cameos, visual gags and even shot-for-shot recreations of other iconic movie scenes.
We’ve rounded up the best pop culture references the Shrek cinematic universe has to offer. Watch closely to catch imagery that captures everything from Lord of the Rings to The Little Mermaid. Ever visited a theme park and wish someone out there would poke fun at how weird or annoying some of the rides can be? Shrek has you covered.
The Dreamworks animators play around with winks to their counterpart characters at Disney, but they also include nods to movies you would never expect to show up in a film for kids. Younger children probably won’t notice the fight choreography from The Matrix or the fact that Puss in Boots borrows some moves from Indiana Jones, but we definitely picked up on those references and loved every single one.
Shrek set the stage for a generation of reference-packed animated films to follow. In fact, good luck finding an animated movie or show that doesn’t include some fun takes on pop culture. They forgot the Babe reference when Shrek said in the first movie, "That'll do, Donkey".
They also left out the reference to Stephen Spielberg's ET when Mongo said to Gingy, "Be Good".

OMG I just realized that I'm pretty sure the way Shrek gets on Donkey during the "Holding Out for A Hero" sequence is also a Lord of the Rings reference to the shot of Legolas getting on his horse the same way.
