For me, the most wonderful thing that happened after it all ended was “let’s see what else is on” signifying that no matter how huge an event, once it’s over, people move on.
Isn't it more specifically about modern consumerism (through the rise of mass media mediums like television) and how effectively it has binded us to it through escapism and detached us so much from everything that even an existential event like this is just dropped after its over in favor of the next new shiny thing to see?

I should also add that humans are inherently selfish in a sense....Unless its a personal event (happy or tragic) and it affects them personally, its just another day/another event/another TV show (like in the case of the Truman show)/another movie...Very few people are empathetic to the suffering of others to the point where Catharsis happens.

$750 million? and the rest, it'd be a 10 or possibly even an 11 figure settlement. He could sue for breaching his civil rights under the 13th Amendment (ya know, that one that abolished slavery), wrongful imprisonment, and for 30 odd years of fair wages or royalties for being the star of the most successful show in history for his entire life. He could also make hundreds of millions from interviews, book deals, speeches and such, but I don't think he'd want to do that, he'd probably take his settlement money, and retire to the middle of nowhere, out of sight.

This movie is actually really dark and twisted if you think about it. You have a society that for the most part is totally okay with trapping a human in a zoo and watching him for 20-30 years living out a lie existence. A creator and director with a god complex. To top it off as Truman begins to question his reality. The viewers don't begin to question the morality of the show instead they take it as an exciting twist and turn of events. Watching some poor guy loose his mind in questioning what is real and they love it. Then when he breaks free they're ecstatic for him ignoring the fact he will probably hate them all. Not to mention the horrible life he will have after freedom in that everyone in the world will know him and pretty much all his life. It would be a horrible existence for everyone to know you that well yet everyone is a stranger to you.
And to think that this movie is 20 years old and reality TV is still most popular genres out there. Shows like Big Brother have ruined people´s lives for real after those people came back to "real world". Some young people still thinks that their future is in reality tv-shows.
In the original script, the guy watching the show in his bathtub was named Lyman. So, lie-man and true-man. It makes sense when you think about their roles. One is truly living and seeking the truth and one is simply viewing someone else live. He also died when his small tv fell in his bathtub in the original script.
It really struck mw when they said, "What else is on?" It hit me that they weren't cheering for Truman sucessfully escaping his fake reality. They were happy because they saw it as a "good happy ending" and nothing more. It was all entertainment to those people watching.

I feel that Truman made up his mind completely once Christoff said, "Say something, you're on television. You're live to the whole world!" It just meant that everything Christof said to get him to stay really wasn't for Truman's wellbeing, but another way to make it an emotional show without any "unnecessary" long pauses.
I'd beg to differ. Ed Harris's character has his own personality, and I think him depicting himself as God - not the Christian version, but one closer to the Pagan concept of God - makes sense when it comes to this scene and that particular line of dialogue. I also think Ed is sort of a father - heavenly or otherwise - to Truman and that Truman finally leaving the known and venturing out into the unknown is the same as the coming of age of children. Truman outgrew the world that was made for him and now he is set to discover what life has in store. Ed Harris being the creator of course felt bittersweet about his 'son' finally leaving everything behind. I think that explains his character.
What speaks to me about this scene is that Truman has the courage to break out of his own reality. He transcends the narrative he was trapped in and becomes the master of his own story. We all have that power, it's just that we forget that when we buy into the reality we're presented with.

It's a great ending, but I'm guessing the show made them lots of money like there was a Truman pillow and all this other merchandise they were selling. Whether the merchandise and such made as much after the show ended we'll never know though. Could make a lot selling VHS's and DVD's afterwards though since this was 1998 and VHS's were still prominent then.
He wanted him to stay so the show could continue to make money. That's always more favorable to a studio than one good ending. This is why reboots exist to begin with.

Such a beautiful ending. I watched this in school and almost my entire class thought this ending was terrible. I really don't get it but I think this ending is brilliant.
But there isn't any closure. I just finished it for the first time 10 minutes ago. It's amazing. This movie is incredible. The characterization was powerful, and done in a slight enough way that it felt natural. The plot built in a crescendo of emotion and righteous moral universality . The one thing that kept it from true greatness was the ending. Because the characterization was so good, the viewer wants to know what happens to Truman (because this connection was so masterfully created). Like what are Truman's feelings about the world? How does the law treat him? Sure he was "adopted" but he could probably sue the "parent" for negligence or kidnapping. What about his best friend does he ever get to meet him and show his rage and maybe even forgiveness for the actors and producers who made him a canary in a gilded cage? There isn't any detente either. There is no falling action. There needs to be a resolution. You don't end at the top of the plot, not at the climax. We should have seen him step out into the world. Maybe a few touching or emotional scenes with the cast members from the show or the creator. Then have him sue the company for millions in back pay since he was technically working without consent. Finally end with a shot of him and the extra that he fell in love with living or vacationing in Fiji. 10 more minutes of this film could have made it legendary. None of the ending even needs to be cut that security guard scene was golden on its own but then go back to Truman.

Christ-OFF is the ego that created this whole world that wants to play God. He does not love Truman, but rather is toying with him in order to keep the ego alive. "Say something Goddamit, you're on television!" That's not love. He is a narcissist, a controller, and an abuser. Truman set himself free and ended the ego forever. Christ-OFF drops his head on his iPad screen as they cease transmission. It's a metaphor for the death of the ego once the true-man left the illusory Maya/world.

Game-Studies I watched you when you first entered the theater watching this. I watched you when you laughed and cheered at the end, and I watched you when you tried to pick up that last piece of popcorn that dropped and fell beneath your seat...and eat it.
They don’t care about Truman at all, that’s the whole point. If they cared about him, they would have sued the company or wouldn’t watch the show… Also, when it ends they say “what else is on?” Truman was just entertainment for them.
Well in the end the empathy wins. This movie reminds me of Britney Spears life. I've seen her interviews lately and her past interviews were everyone asked her inappropriate questions about her boobs, sexuality when she was not even 18 and it so resembled the ending of this masterpiece: You never put camera in my head. It's scary how in a way some people live the Truman show.
I rewatched this recently and was struck by the masterful way Phillip Glass's score works in those final moments. As the director tries to sweet-talk Truman into staying the score slips into its lullaby mode; quiet and dreamy, and complacent. It matches the director's total confidence that Truman is his creation and will remain in the dreamworld he created for him. It's a soft, pillowy undercarriage for most of this clip, lulling us into believing the director's words are working. ...Then, just as the director thinks he has Truman where he wants him the lullaby stops, the music deadens, Truman turns to the camera and begins to deliver his kiss-off line, and before we know what's happening the score pivots, a startling 180 degrees, and a jittery, chaotic, tense tumble of strings begins to bubble up from beneath, breaking the spell cast by Christoff, and he realises he never had any real control over his creation at all. With that smile and bow from Truman the chain breaks, the leash snaps. Christoff sees that he is now going to lose everything. The manic, stabbing, tumbling strings at the end are a reflection of the all-round tumult: the fact that Truman is opening himself up to all the chaos that a real, uncontrolled life brings with it; the fact that the audience is suddenly processing in real-time the unraveling of a televisual mainstay; the fact that all Christoff's certainty about the solidity of the world he'd built is now decimated... We move all the way from quiet, controlled, dreamlike contentment, with a soft, rocking motion to the chord changes, like a mother rocking a baby to sleep...to the sudden intrusion of cold reality into the dream world, with anxious strings waking the sleeper from the dream and pouring all over them, like cold water snapping them into consciousness. Great stuff.
One thing I find it kind of hard to understand is that none of the "actors" felt anything for Truman, despite knowing him for so long. Surely at least one of those close to Truman felt something for him?

god itself is kindda of a complex, in fact a human complex to justify we rulling the world over other forms of life (and many times making them our slaves). but I interpreting it as how religion sell idea of god to us is amazing and clarifying.
The ending is great I watched the movie before and hated the ending because you don't know what happened to him next. But after rewatching it I figured it out. His whole life has been planned out for him and by not showing what happened to him after he left is smart it allows you to imagine what happened to him.

Whatever happens to him it'll be his own choice, without millions of people watching, just like an ordinary person. It would be a major adjustment from that sheltered life on set to the Real World, but Sylvia will be there to help him, and probably some good counselors as well.
I always saw it as, since he isn’t being filmed anymore, we don’t see him anymore. He’s gonna go live a normal life, where no one can watch him. So we can’t watch him

This scene/ending is simply amazing, and the music really highlighted it. I wish Jim Carrey could do more dramatic roles; I like that side of him much better than his comedic side. I also highly recommend to check out "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

The producer really couldn’t have asked for a better finale to his show. The Star realizing the illusion and escaping in dramatic fashion walking out the door to his freedom.

I mean it's the climax of all the way of Truman to the real world, to the truth. Did you know that Truman was called like that because tru-man?, that means he is the only true person on all that fake place. It reminds me a bit of some stuff of the real world, because sometimes we're like locked in an imaginary box where the society won't let us reach our dreams only cause we weren't supposed this or that. In other words, our entire life was written to be routinary and, therefore, boring. This and any other things are the reason I love so much this film. So far my favorite of Jim Carrey and one of the best of its type. And yeah I also had that feeling that every movement of mine was being watched or something haha. I hope you've enjoyed this pic as much as I did because I repeat this is a truly masterpiece... Greetings from Mexico!!! :D

This is a metaphor for escaping the samsaric journey. Deep down, we all know we’re trapped by the mind and we rejoice when we see someone else escape it. It gives hope that we can do it too, and we can. The formula for escape is simple, but not easy.
One of the most beautiful endings in the movie history. I like how they didn't put the reunion scene where Truman sees his love from the past, they left that part for our imagination. Bc it wasn't about the love story, it was about him getting out of there.
The interesting thing is that we do not now the last name of Christoff, his creation, Truman, was invigilated his whole live, but his own private live is sheltered.
This movie is truly special, cant believe I never saw it till just 2 minutes ago. Wow, this is probably the closest representation of a God I've ever seen.
Note the part where his love interests asks God to give Truman the courage to step through that door. Peter Weir is a Christian and the message here is about abandoning a false idea of God in favour of true freedom and relationship with God. Yeah, "God" and religion have always been used to control and manipulate people. Doesn't mean he/she doesn't exist!

It is true they both share similar premises, yet they apply far different methods. Matrix core is anarchistic: _"Anyone who's awaken must help defeat the system by any means necessary"_; while Truman Show is philosophical: _"Are we living a life worth living? Who's running it if not me?"_
One film that still makes me cry and I am a 31 year old man. Jim did such a great job made truman so believable. Whole cast was brilliant but Jim was on another level in this film.
That is total BS. Mostly because in most cases, that person looses touch with you for various reasons and or they settle for someone else. It’s a better strategy to hold on to them.
That very last line signifies EXACTLY the mentality of all tv watchers today... doesn't matter how much heart and soul is poured into things like this, afterwards... "something else is on". It's like a drug for us, a fast reacting, fast degrading and unfulfilling drug... and in most cases, we are left dumber than before we watched it.
The thing that gets me the most about the ending, is that Truman for a while had suspected everything was fake, was a set up, he become more and more aware the longer his life went on, even when he tried to hide it, he never let go of his suspicion, and often, his antics, drawing on the bathroom mirror and such, even the recording he left of himself snoring when he finally managed to escape the house undetected that lead up to this final moment, he did those things in a way to mock the others he perceived were watching him, even when he couldn't prove it. In this final moment, when he smiles, says his greeting catch phrase in that sarcastic tone, and takes a bow, it's him finally getting the last laugh, it's him giving one big final proverbial middle finger to all those he now knows for certain have been an audience that has been watching his every move for his entire laugh.
Honestly one of the best endings of a series ever. Frankly, I think in-universe this ending still was the best outcome even from the perspective for the showrunners, the show was never gonna go back to being as great as when it was "pure", before truman saw through the cracks. And it ended with a great send off giving his catchphrase a whole new layer of depth. They can make a bunch of bucks off of that final "season" and merch. In the long Run they'll just have to look for a new thing to focus on, but I'd say artistically this would have been a better situation than if Truman had eventually become some random old dude that was just sitting in his couch 24/7 or whatever

Was never quite sure what the director thought was going to happen if Truman chose not to leave. The whole premise of the show is broken at that point, and everyone knows it.
Such a clever and powerful ending. Humans can simultaneously feel the joy of letting go of the thing they cared a lot about, and instantly seek something else to entrap themselves to.
If this were an actual show, as disappointing as society would have to become to allow it to happen, we all need to admit one thing: this would be the greatest TV Finale of all time, Bar none.

Well, I mean the movie is generally recognized as being pretty dark. It's meant partly as social commentary.
The movie is a great symbolism that life itself is an illusion, a dream.

i just realised that 'Truman' is like true man. As in he was the only man that was true in the whole place.
In the original script, the guy watching the show in his bathtub was named Lyman. So, lie-man and true-man. It makes sense when you think about their roles. One is truly living and seeking the truth and one is simply viewing someone else live. He also died when his small tv fell in his bathtub in the original script.

It really struck mw when they said, "What else is on?" It hit me that they weren't cheering for Truman sucessfully escaping his fake reality. They were happy because they saw it as a "good happy ending" and nothing more. It was all entertainment to those people watching.

I feel that Truman made up his mind completely once Christoff said, "Say something, you're on television. You're live to the whole world!" It just meant that everything Christof said to get him to stay really wasn't for Truman's wellbeing, but another way to make it an emotional show without any "unnecessary" long pauses.
I'd beg to differ. Ed Harris's character has his own personality, and I think him depicting himself as God - not the Christian version, but one closer to the Pagan concept of God - makes sense when it comes to this scene and that particular line of dialogue. I also think Ed is sort of a father - heavenly or otherwise - to Truman and that Truman finally leaving the known and venturing out into the unknown is the same as the coming of age of children. Truman outgrew the world that was made for him and now he is set to discover what life has in store. Ed Harris being the creator of course felt bittersweet about his 'son' finally leaving everything behind. I think that explains his character.

What speaks to me about this scene is that Truman has the courage to break out of his own reality. He transcends the narrative he was trapped in and becomes the master of his own story. We all have that power, it's just that we forget that when we buy into the reality we're presented with.

It's a great ending, but I'm guessing the show made them lots of money like there was a Truman pillow and all this other merchandise they were selling. Whether the merchandise and such made as much after the show ended we'll never know though. Could make a lot selling VHS's and DVD's afterwards though since this was 1998 and VHS's were still prominent then.

But there isn't any closure. I just finished it for the first time 10 minutes ago. It's amazing. This movie is incredible. The characterization was powerful, and done in a slight enough way that it felt natural. The plot built in a crescendo of emotion and righteous moral universality . The one thing that kept it from true greatness was the ending. Because the characterization was so good, the viewer wants to know what happens to Truman (because this connection was so masterfully created). Like what are Truman's feelings about the world? How does the law treat him? Sure he was "adopted" but he could probably sue the "parent" for negligence or kidnapping. What about his best friend does he ever get to meet him and show his rage and maybe even forgiveness for the actors and producers who made him a canary in a gilded cage? There isn't any detente either. There is no falling action. There needs to be a resolution. You don't end at the top of the plot, not at the climax. We should have seen him step out into the world. Maybe a few touching or emotional scenes with the cast members from the show or the creator. Then have him sue the company for millions in back pay since he was technically working without consent. Finally end with a shot of him and the extra that he fell in love with living or vacationing in Fiji. 10 more minutes of this film could have made it legendary. None of the ending even needs to be cut that security guard scene was golden on its own but then go back to Truman.

Christ-OFF is the ego that created this whole world that wants to play God. He does not love Truman, but rather is toying with him in order to keep the ego alive. "Say something Goddamit, you're on television!" That's not love. He is a narcissist, a controller, and an abuser. Truman set himself free and ended the ego forever. Christ-OFF drops his head on his iPad screen as they cease transmission. It's a metaphor for the death of the ego once the true-man left the illusory Maya/world.

Well in the end the empathy wins. This movie reminds me of Britney Spears life. I've seen her interviews lately and her past interviews were everyone asked her inappropriate questions about her boobs, sexuality when she was not even 18 and it so resembled the ending of this masterpiece: You never put camera in my head. It's scary how in a way some people live the Truman show.
I rewatched this recently and was struck by the masterful way Phillip Glass's score works in those final moments. As the director tries to sweet-talk Truman into staying the score slips into its lullaby mode; quiet and dreamy, and complacent. It matches the director's total confidence that Truman is his creation and will remain in the dreamworld he created for him. It's a soft, pillowy undercarriage for most of this clip, lulling us into believing the director's words are working.
...Then, just as the director thinks he has Truman where he wants him the lullaby stops, the music deadens, Truman turns to the camera and begins to deliver his kiss-off line, and before we know what's happening the score pivots, a startling 180 degrees, and a jittery, chaotic, tense tumble of strings begins to bubble up from beneath, breaking the spell cast by Christoff, and he realises he never had any real control over his creation at all. With that smile and bow from Truman the chain breaks, the leash snaps. Christoff sees that he is now going to lose everything.
The manic, stabbing, tumbling strings at the end are a reflection of the all-round tumult: the fact that Truman is opening himself up to all the chaos that a real, uncontrolled life brings with it; the fact that the audience is suddenly processing in real-time the unraveling of a televisual mainstay; the fact that all Christoff's certainty about the solidity of the world he'd built is now decimated... We move all the way from quiet, controlled, dreamlike contentment, with a soft, rocking motion to the chord changes, like a mother rocking a baby to sleep...to the sudden intrusion of cold reality into the dream world, with anxious strings waking the sleeper from the dream and pouring all over them, like cold water snapping them into consciousness. Great stuff.
One thing I find it kind of hard to understand is that none of the "actors" felt anything for Truman, despite knowing him for so long. Surely at least one of those close to Truman felt something for him?

The ending is great I watched the movie before and hated the ending because you don't know what happened to him next. But after rewatching it I figured it out. His whole life has been planned out for him and by not showing what happened to him after he left is smart it allows you to imagine what happened to him.

Whatever happens to him it'll be his own choice, without millions of people watching, just like an ordinary person. It would be a major adjustment from that sheltered life on set to the Real World, but Sylvia will be there to help him, and probably some good counselors as well.

This scene/ending is simply amazing, and the music really highlighted it. I wish Jim Carrey could do more dramatic roles; I like that side of him much better than his comedic side. I also highly recommend to check out "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

Every time I see this movie or this scene or exactly this Christof's line I break on tears... I mean it's the climax of all the way of Truman to the real world, to the truth. Did you know that Truman was called like that because tru-man?, that means he is the only true person on all that fake place. It reminds me a bit of some stuff of the real world, because sometimes we're like locked in an imaginary box where the society won't let us reach our dreams only cause we weren't supposed this or that. In other words, our entire life was written to be routinary and, therefore, boring.
This and any other things are the reason I love so much this film. So far my favorite of Jim Carrey and one of the best of its type. And yeah I also had that feeling that every movement of mine was being watched or something haha. I hope you've enjoyed this pic as much as I did because I repeat this is a truly masterpiece... This is a metaphor for escaping the samsaric journey. Deep down, we all know we’re trapped by the mind and we rejoice when we see someone else escape it. It gives hope that we can do it too, and we can. The formula for escape is simple, but not easy.
From the creator's perspective, he could easily start a new show with a baby from birth, based on people's buy in to Truman it would kill it as well.
Except now Truman is onto him, and can act. And there is a sort of "movement" against the Truman Show no doubt, after seeing Truman break free.

One of the most beautiful endings in the movie history. I like how they didn't put the reunion scene where Truman sees his love from the past, they left that part for our imagination. Bc it wasn't about the love story, it was about him getting out of there.

Peter Weir is a Christian and the message here is about abandoning a false idea of God in favour of true freedom and relationship with God. It is true they both share similar premises, yet they apply far different methods. Matrix core is anarchistic: _"Anyone who's awaken must help defeat the system by any means necessary"_; while Truman Show is philosophical: _"Are we living a life worth living? Who's running it if not me?"_
One film that still makes me cry and I am a 31 year old man. Jim did such a great job made truman so believable. Whole cast was brilliant but Jim was on another level in this film.

That very last line signifies EXACTLY the mentality of all tv watchers today... doesn't matter how much heart and soul is poured into things like this, afterwards... "something else is on".
It's like a drug for us, a fast reacting, fast degrading and unfulfilling drug... and in most cases, we are left dumber than before we watched it.
The thing that gets me the most about the ending, is that Truman for a while had suspected everything was fake, was a set up, he become more and more aware the longer his life went on, even when he tried to hide it, he never let go of his suspicion, and often, his antics, drawing on the bathroom mirror and such, even the recording he left of himself snoring when he finally managed to escape the house undetected that lead up to this final moment, he did those things in a way to mock the others he perceived were watching him, even when he couldn't prove it. In this final moment, when he smiles, says his greeting catch phrase in that sarcastic tone, and takes a bow, it's him finally getting the last laugh, it's him giving one big final proverbial middle finger to all those he now knows for certain have been an audience that has been watching his every move for his entire laugh.

How Christof wasn't given multiple life sentances is beyond me.
The black hall behind the door is a pretty good representation of Truman stepping into a new and unknown world.
Honestly one of the best endings of a series ever.
Frankly, I think in-universe this ending still was the best outcome even from the perspective for the showrunners, the show was never gonna go back to being as great as when it was "pure", before truman saw through the cracks.
And it ended with a great send off giving his catchphrase a whole new layer of depth.
They can make a bunch of bucks off of that final "season" and merch.
In the long Run they'll just have to look for a new thing to focus on, but I'd say artistically this would have been a better situation than if Truman had eventually become some random old dude that was just sitting in his couch 24/7 or whatever

Maybe it's just me but, I've got the impression that by saying "yeeeah!" truman meant that He knew that He was the protagonist of a TV show and that he just played along the part.

I like the incredibly small pause in between "I am the creator" and "of a television show". It's subtle but it's very powerful.
Was never quite sure what the director thought was going to happen if Truman chose not to leave. The whole premise of the show is broken at that point, and everyone knows it.
I absolutely hate Christof with a passion. This ending made me so happy when Truman found out the truth and got out.

Such a clever and powerful ending. Humans can simultaneously feel the joy of letting go of the thing they cared a lot about, and instantly seek something else to entrap themselves to.
If this were an actual show, as disappointing as society would have to become to allow it to happen, we all need to admit one thing: this would be the greatest TV Finale of all time, Bar none.

I think I’m justified when I say that this is my favorite movie.
Think of the sadness on the outside. He’s met with nothing but people who want to interview him, harass him and make him feel bombarded. He’s the worlds biggest celebrity there’s no way he’d get a real life without Cameras fixed on him just as he was inside.

This was seriously one of my favorite film moments of the 90s. The movie is a classic.
