Frustrations of Spotted Grunters on Topwater lure! The most difficult fish to catch on lure!

  • To catch Spotted spotted grunters on topwater lures can be really challenging and certainly one of the most difficult species to catch on lure in South Africa. I only had about an hour to fish so I tried my luck with a spotted grunter in the estuary. Typical grunter behaviour tested my patients with the grunter feeding actively around me and showed little to no interest in my lure. I finally managed to snatched one as I was about to head home.

As a beginner what bait/lure to use if I’m fishing catfish, cape whitefish, yellow fish (small or big mouth) ???
    😂😂 I’m patiently waiting for a giveaway day 😂😂 since I’m using a wood/stick as a rod and hands as a reel 😂😂😂

If you like carp and other heavyweight freshwater fish, then try a good quality spinning/baitrunner reel or if you can get hold of one, an Alvey centerpin with 8kg breaking strain line (Maxima is good) and a medium action rod. Something long with some backbone in the lower section but "floppy" enough in the tip to handle sudden runs from heavy fish. I have found that using barbless hooks is ideal for when you want to release native fish species but is just as good when fighting a fish so you can take out any exotic invader species such as carp for example and do our biodiversity a big favour. Hope this helps, and tight lines to you!
Oh yes I forgot to mention that if you can't find an Alvey then the KP centerpin made in SA is just as good. But make sure that you get the easy cast models and one with a drag, otherwise you have to hold the reel constantly. I have one without drag which I use for carp in rivers using a porcupine quill float and a small hook , size 10-12 is perfect. I have made my own drag system with a piece of garden tie velcro. It works pretty well. The KP takes just as much line as an Alvey.

Come to think of it, you will really only need some swivels, sinkers and some beads and split shot as well as the hooks. I would get some small strong hooks and some larger ones such as wide gape hooks for carp and circle hooks for catfish. It pays sometimes to use a short wire trace when fishing dead baits for catfish as they can wear through your line if they are big and keep you going for a while. I would also recommend a spool of lighter line, such as 6kg maxima which you can attach to your mainline with a three turn water knot or swivel if you are making up a trace. When using a centerpin, always use a swivel before anything else on your line to avoid line twist. Good luck to you. :)

Tjom daar is nie n beste plek nie… elke dag is anders. Sterkte
