Facebook page ... and keep that BREAD van truckin' !
I liked having Mike Botts up front for a change. Handsome fellow!
He was quite easy on the eyes, yes. As was Jimmy. I miss them.
Bass, guitar, piano, harmonica, Larry Knechtel seemed to turn anything he touched to gold.
especially on the guitar with the awesome and legendary guitarsolo of the guitar man.. :)
To say that Larry is talented is an understatement. He is a musical genius!
Mike Botts drumming was so good. My favourite Bread song is his best work, in my opinion, 'Down On My Knees'. He is simply superb on that track.
Mike Botts was the inventor of soft rock drumming. I'm amazed at the subtle nuances in many Bread tunes. As a drummer, I try and emulate his 'less is more' style .. truly an original
Amen, he seemed to always put something interesting into every tune that keeps the song interesting.
Yeah, I hear ya! I'm diggin your comment! Your right on! I'm a drummer too, and lots of people think the softer, tighter, playing with brushes or mallets is easier than the let er rip heavy duty rock and roll. Nope. Drums have to be perfect, not even the slightest rattle on the snare. High hat has to be perfectly set, with the height just right, just a teeny bit of distance between cymbals. But when its sounding good, its so fun! When I'm attempting to tighten up some else's junky set on the fly, I'll stick hockey tape wherever i canto get the sweet beats.
its true
@@ryanjsimpson Agreed
Yeahhhhhhhh
One of the greatest and most underrated Bands of all time. They should be on par with the Eagles
+Rm M yes i m with you
Wow! Bread and the Eagles. My two favorite bands of all time.
Larry Knechtel was a great man. He seemed to turn anything he touched to gold. During his life, we've emailed a lot
Get over these "underrated" comments. Bread was top-rated for years and years.
The recognition is something that some of the best never had seen. Take a look to Chris Squire from YES. HE NEVER SO IT COMING. Thanks to the people who lead the comity in the billboard. Anyway in our hearts we know that BREAD HAS A SIDE BY SIDE WITH EAGLES AND MORE.
RIP Larry, Mike and Jimmy
Great tune and so good to see Larry playing harmonica. The song is in the key of G and he is playing a C harp in 2nd position if you wanna play along. Fantastic band and concert just a shame James Griffin was missing. He wrote some terrific songs with the band and was a superb singer
I believe this is when Jimmy had a lawsuit against them for trying to perform as "Bread" when he wasn't present. Since Jimmy was a shareholder in Bread, he was trying to assert some rights over the use in public. Mike Botts said at the time they were getting served constantly with cease orders. The legal issues around this lasted for more than 10 years and was finally settled in 1988. The lawsuit cost the other members dearly as Elektra denied them any royalties while the legal action took place. Botts and Knechtel never spoke to Griffin again until they did their 1997 world tour. Jimmy found another grievance on that tour and eventually left for good. Unfortunately Jimmy and David had some personal agreements that would get ignored or overruled by the record label back in the day and this made Jimmy upset. On the reunion tour I think it came to a head when the song list became a little too David Gates oriented. Gates wrote the hits, that's what people wanted to hear, so that is what they played. A nightly reminder to Jimmy of some broken promises. I am not anti-Jimmy, I love his songs honestly. Music business is a cruel business.
@@spuwho actually, Mike and Larry both recorded and played with Jimmy several times over the years. Gates sued them for calling themselves Toast in Nashville. What broke the band up initially was that Jimmy had talked the label into releasing Love You Till The Cows Come Home as an A side. It was a rocker that would have broke the mold and extended the life of the band. Gates went behind his back and convinced the label that Suite:Clouds Rain would be better - don't want to change horses midstream etc. Afterward, Jimmy recorded his 2nd solo album(that I had the pleasure of working on), Botts and Knechtel went back to studio playing and production. THEY only got back together with Gates for the money.
@@revenantband1 Which one, of Revenant or Canadian Staff Band? Thanks for sharing. Honestly I have read so many stories about Bread over the years I am about to head over to Amazon to see if I can find some biographies to read. I guess I could just call David up at his house but at 80, the details might be a little sparse. Maybe I could email Robb.
Any band with a sense of humour is a band of mine!
RIP LARRY RIP MIKE . . Bread's music is timeless . . .
Love this post....thanks so much. Mike Botts enjoying himself so much on vocals with David, he was a really nice bloke. RIP Mike, Jimmy and Larry.. Jimmy Griffin missing from the line up here. Totally under-rated and wonderful band.
What a great bunch of guys. David surely has many great many memories of his time with Bread.
Good to see them happy and having fun!
I'm 16 and this is one of my playlist❤ 60's-70's years old heart here!
Good, melodic music knows no age. At your age I loved Frank Sinatra's music---secretly! It was the height of the disco era, plus all kinds of rock. I would have been shamed for admitting to liking FS. These days I'd be relentlessly humiliated on social media. Regarding this behavior, we haven't progressed at all.
right on, friend! so much music to explore, so little time...!
God bless Rob royer and David gates
It's nice to see Mike Botts doin' vocals w/ David Gates!
I love how the drummer subtly pushes David aside.
Love to hear that ovation guitar one more time.
I liked Mike Botts moustache, looks cool
Was a common style (or shape) in the 1970s. When it suited the man it truly enhanced his attractiveness, and looked exceptionally good on guys like Mike with dark hair and a contrasting light skin tone. Like in art, it's the interplay of light and dark that partly contributes to what's determined to be visually appealing--or not.
My favorite band
They are having so much fun! Excellent......just fab.
I want to dedicate this song to my wife.:)
Larry Knechtel!
Mike is so funny lmao
Love the way the keeping adding to the harmonies until, by the last 2 lines or so, they have all four guys singing. So much talent, really beautiful.......
Just a shame that Jimmy's not there with them, singing. :(
I LOVE THIS SONG.
Great band, great guys.
Thanks for posting this rare gem! 1978 - what a (last) great year.
Bread always road shotgun with me through my high school days in early 70's or should I say "My 8-track days."
great band
My favorite band forever
Rip Mike boots, larry knechtel, and james(Jimmy) Griffin
This is one of the less-popular songs, so I am so glad it got sung live at least once. Based on the title, I thought it was going to have the overall feel of "Lost Without Your Love," so this bounciness is a fun subversion.
Music very good! Thanks for sharing.
Great song and video! Thanks for sharing!
In this day and age where changes happen twice as fast
Sometimes I get wonderin' if anything will last
People changin' partners like they change their underwear
Maybe I'm old-fashioned but darlin' I still care.
And I'm yours for life
Come and be my lifetime
Come and take the love I have for only one
Yes I'm yours for life
Come and share my lifetime
Share the world until our day is done.
Time that I first saw your face I loved you where you stood
In your eyes a kindness - told me you were good
And if the world could share your heart there'd never be a war
And darlin' if I tried and tried I could not love you more
And I'm yours for life
Come and be my lifetime
Come and take the love I have for only one
Yes I'm yours for life
Come and share my lifetime
Share the world until our day is done.
Sometime I pray that you will always be the way you always
Are to me
'Cause if I lost you to the winds of change then I would cease to be.
David Gates is a great lyricist. his song If was short but so memorable. It has to be one of the best songs written about love. I used to sing it to my husband.
David married in 1959 and is still married to JoRita. Mike was married to the same gal until he passed away---which was much too young I might add.
Great how they get together to sing
It'd have been even greater, if Jimmy was there, singing with them. Sadly, it wasn't to be.
@@womanbread Agreed. I listened to Mother Freedom with Jimmy's vocal backing up David's. It was so great. I think he just didn't want to play second banana to David. However their record label Elektra knew David's soft rock was what distinguished Bread from the rest of the bands and decided to promote those songs.I can't say I disagree with them. Bread was great, but could have been greater and last longer if Jimmy stayed. Jimmy formed 2 other bands after Bread but didn't achieve the success he had with Bread,
It's just half a loaf without Jimmy Griffin ! !
Yep...without Jimmy, it's no longer bread. It becomes 'David Gates & Bread.' :(

I am reading that biography now. LOVE IT!!!
Wonderful !! Thanks for sharing ....
lush. Botts!
A COWBOY BEAT AND STYLE MUSIC !!!!LOVE IT TOO !!!
👏❤GRANDES Y BELLOS RECUERDOS.
Wow!
Talented Larry Knechtel on harmonica. Look at the clothes: Bellbottom Jeans! Wow !
I remember the bellbottom jeans. I wore them when I shouldn't have. I am too short and they made me look shorter.
Great!!
GREAT BAND!
David Gates you the best
Que buen tema!!
I see there are 2 copies of "A Sweet Surrender" book available on Amazon. The paperback version is listed for $2,000.00 USD. The hard cover is listed for $600.00 USD. Are they nuts?
+magicrick7425 Hahaha ! Thats inflation for you I guess... Surprising to see that the paperback edition sells for so much... especially as we haven't even PUBLISHED a paperback run yet ! That's Amazon for you ;-)
+Malc2311 Is your book still available? If so, where can I get one?
Paperback edition will be at the printers in the next month or so - visit facebook.com/bread.biography for regular updates ! Thanks ...
They didn't sing the verse :
"Sometime I pray that you will always be the way you always
Are to me
'Cause if I lost you to the winds of change then I would cease to be"
Wow! You're really my Doux Bèbè 😎😍😙😙😙
that 'does NOT' look like Jimmy Griffin on Banjo there? guess it's a 'specialist' for that instrument, obviously. although i would probably say, Jimmy could facilitate some basic 'banjo' playing if needed. so why the stand in particularly?
oh..one more thing.... it would be 'news to me', but...as i look below at a few other comments, 'had jimmy departed the band or something, by this time? sheesh.... if so, had no idea that was the case. again, 'why'..isn't he here on this performance?
Jimmy quit the band mid-way through the 76/77 tour due to 'personal' issues and expected the others to call a halt to the tour as well. They refused, continued onwards ... and Jimmy sued them all. It all went downhill from there. The full story can be found in the book 'Bread: A Sweet Surrender' (currently available via Amazon.co.uk in limited hardback). The fourth member seen in this video is touring guitarist Dean Parks...
aw man....i never knew there was 'bad blood' between any of these guys. ( although, admittedly...i haven't particularly 'researched their full story'...) i only know, like millions of others, that i a fan. grew up listening to them like so many. i was 10 in '70...and these guys were all over the radio with their soft-rock hits. i also remember for the first time, hearing 'mother freedom' ( as my older sis'..had that record, along with a number of other popular rock artists of the day and ... i'd put them on the phonograph in our living room. Sly and Family Stone, Iron Butterfly, John Denver, Carpenters, ha ha!... we had it all. Mother Freedom literally 'did' something to me.... moved me...and subsequently, i 'Too'...pursued a life in music. ( i'm a drummer/singer) anyway, thanks for your kind insightful reply. i may just 'get that book!
@@Malc2311 .....The book is slated for re-release in September 2019. Rare copies of the first edition float around at ripoff prices.
Malc2311 Yes, Jimmy Griffin was tired of David’s songs always being selected as the singles. Both were great songwriters.
@@jimmitchell896 No one could blame Jimmy for feeling that way. David's songs were always the A sides, while Jimmy's songs always got relegated to the B side of any single. It would upset and frustrate any singer/songwriter and original/co-founder of any band to have that happen. It wasn't fair to Jimmy. Most people, when they hear any bread song on the radio or wherever, automatically think: 'Oh, David Gates! I love David Gates' music. He's a genius....etc.' But what they don't know, tragically, is that Jimmy was a brilliant singer/songwriter in his own right. Most people don't know/aren't familiar with/don't recognize the name Jimmy Griffin. I find that truly awful, on Jimmy's behalf.
my fave in Bread
Супер команда!классная вещь!!!
Dean Parks on fire!
Just a shame it wasn't Jimmy playing with them. Dean Parks is excellent, yes....but it's not bread without Jimmy. It morphed into 'David Gates and bread.' Such a great band, whose music was the soundtrack to my growing up years.
デビッド ゲイツ バンドですね。
