Hi Danny I'm so sorry my question about Maya and Joey caused you to be sad. It's good to hear that they are safe. Sending good thoughts and prayers that you will be able to find a solution for them to eventually be with you. ❤
There are two types of neem oil. The classic one which is thick and viscous and which together with water and a little dish detergent is used preventively against insects and the normal one which is found everywhere and which is antifungal. Indeed, the smell is unbearable, but it is an alternative to chemical solutions against insects (I'm talking about the classic one, I haven't used the other type yet).
I had a huge fungus gnat problem and there were too many for the sticky cards to handle. I bought Neem powder and made Neem tea to water my orchids and now I have no gnats at all. It is the only thing that has worked for me
I am from the Caribbean, and grow orchids (Dens, Phals, Oncidium, a few Epidendrums, Vandas, Cattleyas). ALL my orchids are grown outside (in shade, except for a couple Vandas). I follow the instructions on the Neem Oil bottle, and so far, have NO PROBLEM with the Neem Oil I use. The smell? What's that? Probably as I use it outside, the smell dissipates into the air. I usually use it in the rainy season.
IDK, I've used the NEEM oil as directed, and it has worked against scale and (initial infestations of) spider mites. Just make sure to couple with a good detergent soap.
Stem rot, I got lucky on this one. My Phal pal had roots above and below the rot spot so I cut off the bottom half of the stem. It was scary bc it was a lot of stem that was removed. I then used cinnamon powder on the cut & I repotted it in pure bark chips and didn't water unitil I saw new growth. It survived fabulously. It's the prettiest orchid I have now.
Neem is good for controlling pests but, like Orchids, some plants are sensitive to it. Neem interrupts the pest's life cycle so it's too slow if the problem is bad. Also, you need the one for gardening and even then you only use a tablespoon per half gallon of hot water. I don't like it either, you have to be too careful and it's only a preventative.
Love your videos, just recently was given a phal which was my first orchid (bought a second with mini flowers last week) Your beginner videos have been a huge help and I was able to help save my mom's orchid that had only 3 small roots left when I repotted it for her.
Monopodials don’t care for it if it gets into the crown, for sure. There are so many other really good options, I have moved away from using it except to general areas. It is very effective, but it does kill bees.
Thanks for the comment about smelling Like onion.I have a gag reflex to it😂. Thank goodness I chose something else yesterday.Cause I couldn't find the Type of neem oil. I was looking for.
I’m in Brazil and here we always teach to repot in a way orchids dry out in up to two days. We also always teach not to keep in media, as it decomposes and gets too humid. I agree that Neem oil isn’t enough and can be bad (heavy). I use Charcoal mainly, but not only, it varies.
I'm a qualified practicing horticulturist. Your stuff always teaches me something practical. I love that you always refer to your climate and that influences how to care for plants. 100 % correct, it does. You have a dry climate and I live where it's 70% humidity all the time. Still you manage to teach people how to do things properly. And yes sterilize everything always always
Aw Danny!! I’m so sorry to hear about your birds. You are an amazing person to make such a difficult decision to make sure Maya and Joey are in the best situation for them. My heart breaks for you. Much love and hugs to you.
I think it's really important that people talk more about moving with pets; people who are thinking of how it will effect the pet, are doing a good job in my book! Sometimes what we want is not whats the best for them. It's so sad, but good on you being a good mum and making sure they have a loving suitable home! ❤
I used pre-mix neem oil, it works just fine, and its very effective in my spider mite infestation, the down side of premix neem oil is that it's way more pricey than the raw one. Sadly I'm afraid to mess with the mixture and kill my summer bumming phals (polychilos)
Dont feel bad for considering the welfare of your animals vs the new house. For the person with hot and humid climates. I use bark, charcoal and perlite. Its a common medium in Australia for all its climates. Also keep in mind if you have an orchid from a store vs a nursery, the former can have massive issues with roots from stress and poor packaging on the brand's part. Sometimes you have success, sometimes you just dont. I found all my successes have been from nursery grown orchids, some of which have similar climates to my own.
Neem oil is great for many things but I found orchids, bromeliads, some monstera and air pants don't do too well especially if treated at full strength. Always test a small portion of the plant, like 1 leaf on the bottom to see if a plant reacts badly to it. After 24-48 hrs if no signs of burning you know it's safe to use 😉 It takes some time to get used to neem and what can be treated without damaging it. Also you have to make sure your using the neem oil specifically designed for plants 😉
hi Danny same situation with comment no. 7 can i use pumice instead of lava rock? and can can i also apply the sandwich method ( sphagnum moss and pumice layer by layer) or just use pure pumice. I am afraid of fungals. Im tired of repotting my orchids in coco cubes/chips cause they become moldy and accumulate fungus. i grow most of my orchids (phals and cattleyas) in clay pots hanged. here in my country there is a season where it is hot and dry and here came the heavy rainy season. I hope you can address my question thankyou very much! ♥
Iv used kelp fertilizer in the past for other plants but do you think it would be okay for my orchid collection I have orchid fertilizer but I like using natural products.

I have used fertiliser specifically for orchids which contained seaweed in the past, but I found it was causing strange hormonal issues. Deformed flowers and monopodial orchids creating an excessive number of keikis which the plant could not actually sustain. It might have just been my experience, but I recall MissOrchidGirl having similar issues in the past. I definitely would not use fertiliser that is not formulated for orchids specifically. One is they are too strong for epiphytes, and two they are usually formulated with urea, as it's cheap source of nitrogen, but it's not usable for ephiphytes as they do not live in soil (bacteria that live in soil is necessary to process urea for plant roots to use).
Hi Danny! Thank you for all the awesome content! I am newer to the hobby, and I have been using the repotme slotted plastic pots. My orchids are doing well and roots are growing like crazy through the slots. I am really worried about what I’ll need to do to repot these orchids. Could you maybe do a video at some point with an orchid whose roots are growing through all the slots and holes and how you would proceed?
I don't know if I've seen pore clogging, what does it look like? One of my cactus had whitish streaks after using it. I thought it was a burn but maybe it was clogged pores? I quit using it.
@@solarwinds-orchids breathe thru their leaves and when they are clogged with dirt or oil or anything that doesn't let the leaves get what they need, the leaves will die. You don't see anything on the orchid leaves, they just turn yellow and die. I've seen leaves on other plants sprayed with neem oil have the same reaction.

rePotme, the only one I trust for my orchids.

OH! It's an antifungal? I didn't know that! Thx.
Aww I’m sorry to hear about the birdens--perhaps things will be different in the future 🤞❤️

So sorry to hear about the birds. But it sounds like you did the right thing for them! ❤

Welcome to the world of orchids!! You will have a good time - only build on your patience.

I'm glad to see someone else is also grossed out by onion. 🤢🤮 Now I don't feel alone. LOL.

Neem works by interrupting the pest's lifecycle. Maybe spider mites and thrips are not sensitive to it in that way.
Incredible video as always!!
neem oil seems to do alot of damage to my other plants as well so i just use a systemic either for insects or fungus etc.
Iv used kelp fertilizer in the past for other plants but do you think it would be okay for my orchid collection I have orchid fertilizer but I like using natural products.

If you do a search on her videos I think she already has one about that.
Neem oil clogs pores on leaves
Did you use the one for gardening? Did you dilute it with water?
Neem oil is a pore clogger on many plants....as I unfortunately found out the hard way.
