  • "Today the task of growing up through the middle childhood years has become more complex. No longer are boys and girls directed by simple and restrictive rules, conventions, and prejudices into clearly separate sex role identities. Roles of men and women in society have begun to shift, in some instances, dramatically. Major changes in rights, roles and responsibilities of men and women seem a certainty in the future. The impact of these changes can be seen in our laws, our languages, in the media, and in the relationships around us."
This is the second in a set of four filmstrips "designed to make students aware of the opportunities which are becoming available to them, and of some of the problems which have arisen in the course of historical evolution in changing roles of men and women."
"In a series of vignettes we hear people discuss their hobbies, interests and careers as well as how they feel about the changes in sex roles." The "feeling of unlimited possibilities" conveyed by the first strip (posted earlier) "is carried over into" this one, "in which we see both young people and adults pursuing their interests and 'giving things a try'." Its purpose is 1) to encourage boys and girls to try some new activities", 2) to show "that learning and practice is the key to having skills", 3) to "demonstrate that boys do not have one set of inborn skills while girls have a different set", and 4) "to encourage students to consider all possible interests and careers, not just a limited few."
This video is presented for historical and archival purposes.
