Valve trombone in an army of slide trombones feels perfect for some reason

That's how Juan Tizol must have felt, in among Ellington's crew.

Funny that he plays most of this solo at the bottom of his range while he plays slide t-bone all over his incredible register.

Yes, that's very true. Good observation!

Bob Brookmeyer took a similar approach to the valve trombone. I haven’t picked one up myself but wonder if they figured out there’s a limited range of clarity due to its construction.

This bounces along like the smoothest stone on a lake. Perhaps more like a young child running, skipping and jumping, absorbed in her own delight?
I would argue music is the most powerful metaphoric language we have and Jazz, possibly the shortest distance so far found, able to couple our emotional lives together.
Toni Berlenguer, I propose one of the great trombone teachers in recent times, demonstrated just how far that language extends, great heaving sobs, keening regret when emotion is allowed to tumble out. A certain trombonist pupil was watching and her instrumental performances subsequently put away the trad and the trite, of which she was already master and had her increasingly pursue profound emotional engagement, instrumentally as well as vocally.

Ditch the man bun-looks ridiculous. Good playing though.

Looks like a pony tail rather than man bun… but regardless, function first, who wants to get their long hair caught up in the valves? 😂
