I remember when PvP players before the game came out theorized about how fromsoftware would have perfected the backstab and how they pointed to past installments to demonstrate how the mechanics had evolved. all those theories were quickly demolished obviously
Honestly in my mind the ds3 system was great it just communicated what was happening poorly, if it had the ds2 animations I think people would’ve understood and enjoyed it a lot more. The trouble with ER as far as I can tell is the passive poise meant they needed the direction check to keep the ds3 fast grab without having constant poise-stabs. Honestly I’d take bs over standing poise any day but hey, not my call 🤷♂️

@@abookofmatches ds2 wasn't perfect by any means... I remember forcing people to roll twice and just yanking them back to me as soon as their shoulders hit the ground for that second roll. That's just the quick and dirty way to explain that "technique" for ds2.
I really don't know how I feel about the direction taken for backstabs, but it's better than DeS Pingcheckstabs and also better than Havelmom poisestabs. Idk, time for me to stop complaining.
They didn't give the bs grab any poise damage :(
@@Silver4Hire if you miss your punish your gonna get spanked. Poise dmg on an attack that usually hits nothing does not seem usefull.
@@Crit-Multiplier Well it does have some uses and it should be a super easy thing to implement , just goes to show how rushed the poise system was.

This video was very well put together. I now feel I have a greater understandings of a PVP aspect of Elden Ring. On top of all that, the video was entertaining from start to finish, and the music absolutely slaps.
This videos really fantastic, big ups to everyone who was involved. With Australian net, didn't think it was possible but with a single session it's *actually* doable.
Practising timings when opponents in hitstun is probably the best starting point for fishing, from there the possibilities really open up

Great video. My fingers are still crossed that they might make the backstab-attempt animation less punishable in future patch. The lack of poise damage at the very least could be said to be a bug.

Delightful explanation, honestly. While a lot of people might be critical of the new directional check system in ER, I for one absolutely love it. Backstabs may be more difficult to land, but they feel much more intuitive and rewarding to me now.
I’m torn but I think ultimately I agree with this take. Dangerous, punishable but high value moves are in theory a really good place for active fishing to be, they’re a shade too punishable and obscure still imo but the worse problem is that so much other stuff is very safe and easy. Once, hopefully, all the safe, unpublishable and easy stuff has been balanced than I think that’d leave grabs in a really good niche

great video. i hope you and other players continue to learn about and push the envelope on backstabs. even tho they are greatly limited vs ds3, and will often get you killed, im not ready to give up on them yet, and the ways that i have figured out to be a decent ER fisher, while paling in comparison to what you see in ds3, has really helped to maintain my enjoyment of the game, which tbh can be pretty difficult at times.

As someone who knows FROM pvp combat, but has yet to play Elden Ring, this video has proved my hopes true. Literally everything I've seen until now has simply said "Don't try stabs, they aren't good." and I was a little worried.

This video was sick. The footwork was incredible watching a bs fish move in a souls game is always enjoyable for me its just so much flashier and aggressive the the other more common style of play like wiff fishing and passive play. It reminds me if the aggressive combat of bloodborne (my favorite souls game) more akin to a dance then a fight

When you look at it this way you could make the argument that backstabs are the best they have ever been. Nice video. I Gotta practice reverse quickstepping. Also not sure if you meant to or not but this video is listed as Dark Souls. I can see why you would want it that way but this is some really good information that could spark inspiration in the real players of this wonderful game.
I think… yes kind of. Grabs are in a really good place but suffer by being alongside so many overtuned and under-punishable attacks. If grabs stayed exactly as is and a lot of the rest of the game got tuned down I’d be happy, I think personally I’d like a little buff to the confirm and wakeup side of grabs but as is it’s in an interestingly high-ceiling place.
With the dark souls tag; RUclips tags all my videos as being original dark souls, there probably is a way to change it but I’ve not been able to find it. Honestly I know I should engage more with the suggestion algorithm but I quite like that my stuff is mostly shared word of mouth. If I can find a way to change the game tag I will, thanks for highlighting it ✌️

Very informative! It felt like a lot was still possible with backstabs but it always had to be under the right or most optimal conditions.
Nice reverse quickstep stabs there. Haven't seen those in a long time.

I miss DS1 backstabs sometimes
I’ve been having a blast fishing in the arena and invasions. I was much better at it in DS3 but it’s fun in elden ring. Plus it adds another depth to the PvP

at 4:59 it says that direction check line is orthogonal to attacker’s core direction
at 5:01 it says the grab fails when a victim’s core direction crosses that (direction check line) line.
Thus, if a victim faces the same direction as you during the check the grab won’t be initiated (contradiction)
I would say the condition must be that the angle between direction check line and core line must be 90 degrees because those lines always intersect except the case when they’re lying on each other.
P.S. if 2 core direction lines were meant it would be logical since if they intersect that means 2 directions aren’t the same which is basically the condition of failed grab
I’m not 100% sure I’m following you but I think I am. The victim has to be facing ‘north’ and the attacker has to be facing ‘north’ to instigate the grab. At the moment the grab is initiated up until it’s confirmed if the victim turns to face true east or true west as relative to the attacker’s north then the grab fails. I hope this has helped and that ice followed what you were asking?

interesting thoughts on the stamina grabs when chasing someone, I remember chasing a solo host once and literally chaining about 4 backstabs on them
That’s interesting, I’ve never seen chained roll grabs, catching even fatroll chained rolls is quite hit and miss and I’d assume the wakeup invulnerability would protect against backstabs. I don’t know with that one, if you have the footage I’d be glad to take a look at it, sounds wild

at 8:04 : spatial-check is a ds feature and is double-sided?
It is, I think Amir has a video on his channel showing the actual hitbox and mechanism of it (technically it’s a distance check not a box afaik but a box is easier to visualise)
