- Today we look at the evolution of the Spanish Grand Prix, Which started out on the Formula 1 calendar in 1951, Throughout this time the Grand Prix has been to five different circuits which include the most common one we all know today, The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, So sit back and enjoy how far the Spanish GP has came from it's debut 72 years ago. I love these videos, but I think personally it would be better to drive each track in a car from the period when the track was used instead of a modern car, as it would give a better sense of what it was like and we would be able to see more realistic corner speeds etc. Still great video !
Yeah I tried that out at the beginning of the season and I felt like adding the modern car was more fun as it gives you a comparison of what the newer cars could do on the older version of a circuit or so, But yeah I get what you mean
Maybe do another video with this format that would be really interesting as a comparison
I heard a story that because the first Spanish GP at Catalunya was hosted so soon after the track was built, there was no time for grass to grow on the mud banks around the circuit, so the organisers spray painted the banks green to make it look like grass

It was originally built for the 1992 Summer Olympics, but it was finished ahead of schedule and given that Jerez was a no-go after 1990, Catalunya was shoehorned in as a last minute replacement.
Montjuic is a street circuit we need in today's calendar. Hope they revive it if they wanna plan a street course in Barcelona 🙏🙏🙏

Yeah it’s not great 😅 But it’s as best as we are going to get
I'm not sure the simulated Jerez track is very accurate. In 1997 the straight at 4:13 took around 6 seconds for an F1 car. Modern cars are faster now but the sim version of that straight still seems much too short.
The hairpin at the end was the location of Michael Schumacher's infamous collision with Jacques Villeneuve. "You hit the wrong part of him, my friend."

I did many laps in Montjuïc with my bike. Nowadays, there is a roundabout between Avinguda Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia and Avinguda de l'estadi (Main straight). Some streets are wider than Baku main straight.

Last week i was in Barcelona and i actually visited the Monjuïc. Theres a memorial to the track and plus the Olympic Park is right next to the old pit straight. Looking at the roads which made up Monjuïc its insane that they actually raced there. That last sector is trouser-ruiningly fast

Your statement is flawed. In 2007 was the chicane introduced, and every single f1 car had V8 power units from that year, even Toro Rosso.

Toro Rosso did have a V10 that year, but a downgraded one. It was the last car to have a V10.
Wrong. The chicane was created in 2007. 2006 was the first year of V8s, but Toro Rosso competed with a sorta modified V10 engine. For 2007 they had V8 engine like all teams

Jerez last time they host formula 1 GP was 1997 but not with Spanish GP name but European GP and also the last race of 1997 became famous of Schumacher coliaded with Villanueva then made Schumacher got fined by FIA with all his points 1997 gone, but the all he podiums, fastest laps and racers win still recognize

You know that as much as it wasn't used as the Spanish GP, Jerez was still used for a race in 1997
Kinda funny how we are pretty much back at the original 1995 Layout in 2023 with La Caixa being closer to the original again and the infamous chicane finally removed.
All they have to do to make this circuit way better is make turn one tighter so you can get some better moves
Well I'm glad it's gone. I'm just a simracer but gods that chicane is definitely very high up my list of most hated corners. Completely kills the flow of the track.
I don't think much of Spain as a track has had it's moments like in 1991 & 96 apart from that's it really.
The Spanish GP needs to move to Motorland Aragon and Formula 1 keep Barcelona for testing only.

I loved the 2021 track layout. The only problem was the RACC chicane, it could have been shorter, now I understand why people thought it was a simulator nightmare.

@@Nekrews51 Yes, there were many moments that I remember. For example the Mercedes crash in 2016, or the fight between Carlos and Alonso in 2018, or Hamilton's comeback last year. There are definitely several moments, but these are the ones that came to my mind first :D
Its a nice video, but the turn is not called La Caxie, the real name is La Caixa. But except for that its a perfect video. Good job
8:27 this info was actually not correct. in 2003, there was still one single route at La Caixa. in 2004 they built an additional route which is tighter and started using this it until 2020.

If im not wrong, they build a new chicane just for MotoGP, which they dindt use at the end
@@deivid_14h it ultimately became the De Facto layout for the WRX events while the F1 chicane was the Joker Lap
@@deivid_14h I think they builded for moto GP but it was also used for formula 1. In fact, it is the actual chicane of the circuit.

@@Kevin_DB no, you're right, Jerez hosted the European GP in 1994 and 1997, but also the Spanish GP from 1986 to 1990.
