Pre crisis Earth-2 comics were the best ongoing alternate universe stories, they had the balls to kill off Batman and not cop out by retconning it or having someone replace him (years before they knew Crisis was coming to change everything). DC and Marvel would never have the balls to do that today
Does anymore remember DC's Gods and Monsters universe? Superman was raised by Hispanic farmers in South America, and the twist was that he was the son of Zod instead of Jor-EL. Batman was a vampire. Wonder Woman was Bekka the New God, instead of Diana. So essentially, the trinity were ruthless Anti-Heroes. This came out in 2015, so 9 years before Absolute
Remember that the biggest reason new 52 failed is that we were stuck with characters that didn't feel like our characters. These new guys are our characters but they aren't our mains.
It seems to have shat on Krypton making it a much more caste strict place, it did make the tragedy of superman's family worse as here he got to meet them and has that shadow hanging over them, if we consider that Darkseid has an influence on this world then through that lense I kind of get it, he had the universe a darker place, trying to break down the heroes so they don;t offer much of a challenge to him or are not heroes in general, not a bad idea however I think more should have been put on this theme, that things are dark because of Darkseid, of his influence, can the heroes still be heroes under these darker circumstances?
The big issue that I have with all these reimaginations of classic heroes is the dark and edge stuff. Why don't make a more light and soft take like the Pre-Crisis Era? DC needs let the 90's style die. Just let heroes be heroes again. Why the Ultimates need be a bunch of amoral killers again? Just make a new universe with all new and original characters.
I know they were cheesy, but that's why I liked the 'Marvel Age/Marvel Adventures' line and X-Men First Class (Jeff Parker) comic from the late 2000s. They were almost their own bright fun universe. Good, fun superhero stuff.
I will agree that these alternate universes that are based off of the DC and Marvel Prime universes don't have the staying power since a lot of fans like the Timeless characters. However in terms of giving the fans what they want though is definitely a big win for those products. Because I remember years ago during the events of the Secret Wars idea that originally they were playing to destroy the main Marvel Prime universe and keep the Ultimate Universe around as the new Marvel Prime universe. And it was the same way with DC at the time when they created The New 52 Universe unfortunately fans were complaining that a lot of the Timeless beloved characters AKA (Wally West AKA The Flash II) was missing and that they wanted to have these Timeless characters back so they basically scrap the new 52 idea and went back to the post crisis era of the DC heroes and villains after merging with their new 52 counterparts.
The only way I think you could do something like this is if you change the mythos of the world significantly and have reversed alignment characters. Imagine an Avengers team made of Thanos, Doom, Green Goblin etc fighting against evil versions of Iron Man, Thor etc. There have been a lot of instances of characters switching sides and some of them have even become new characters on their own like venom and the maker so imagine a world where they all switched due to some weird multiverse inversion thing. This way you could focus on different characters in roles they’d never be in otherwise so there’s less overlap while still using really popular characters.
I remember the Amalgam universe. Dark Claw is the one I really remember, the Batman/Wolverine combined character did look badass to my young self but I can't really remember any story standing out, just the cool concept lol
A few years from now no one will remember these lines existed. As soon as they switch to the usual crap creators Marvel and DC hire people will learn how boring the Ultimate universe is and how completely stupid the Absolute universe is.
Ironic Absolute game Bruce at least his mom still there to support and guide him and made his as batman less bitter toxic paronoia unlike his prime counterpart, and oddly he befriend with his rogue gallery
In a way, Ultimate kinda has. The original Ultimate Spider-Man was used as an excuse to get rid of Peter and MJ's marriage and now we're stuck with single, loser Peter.
@smokydogy I disagree with your point about The Maker but I wholeheartedly agree with everything else. I love Mark Millar but his Ultimate X-Men is my least favorite of his work at Marvel
I loved the original Ultimate Spiderman. It was the perfect opportunity to have teenage webslinger in that comic and the Peter Parker and MJ we all love in the 616. They decided they couldn't do that because Joe Quesada hated Marvel comic books (Rob Liefeld has some stories about this.)
I don't think I want them to be permanently changed, but I really enjoyed the first issues of both. The difference makes me appreciate the Mainstays more, plus it's just a change of pace. Let's not pretend the writers are going to stick around long term though.
Absolute universe isn't replacing anything. DC doesn't stop publishing right after events. Most ppl reviewing the absolute line also aren't reading All In. Aquaman starts from #1 in January, Superman is like on 23 by March with a Doomsday arc, Green Lanterns is now the Fraction run. DC also has some recent stand alones
I absolutely loved DC stories that are in different universes, I have the entire “Earth 2” run from a few years ago, must have been over 50 issues total I think, they’re all in the attic now so I can’t look. I loved that run, and it actually ended with the heroes losing, Darkseid came & took over Earth, it was such a sight seeing all the heroes escaping on ships as Darkseid lands on the planet to take over, it was so cool. That then ran into Convergence, that world they were all on ended up being Earth 2’s new planet, and then a new “Earth 2” comic started with them setting up life on this new planet. I have a few comic runs taking place in different universes. Or some in the future like “Justice League 3000”, I loved that comic, think it ran for about 10 or 12 issues, then they made “Justice League 3001” which I hated. Or then there was “Futures End” which I loved, that then ran into “Batman Beyond”, which I loved, both runs over the last 10 years. So stories in other worlds or the future can be long running and entertaining, as long as it’s good people will read it.
I did a condensed Batman read in the first year I tried comic stories. All the Batman variants was like a rubber band stretching ever thinly for me. It ended up snapping right back. To the point I was more conservative trying other DC characters. Passed on New 52, Earth One and Injustice for Superman. All the Superman stuff I got is pre-2009. I didn't keep Batman N52, Earth One, All Star, Arkham Game Comics and have barely touched Batman Rebirth. Again I kept all the Batman stuff pre-2010. Batman and Superman are so iconic. They are woven into the fabric of pop culture to the point they have a long standing template. The stuff pre-2010 feels like that template to me.
So there’s only so much damage you can do to the characters. So unless they actually wanna start taking care of them that means hire the top tier writers. Ultimate Spider-Man is selling well because we got what we wanted Peter and MJ married. Now imagine if DC really wanted to make money then they would have gone in the right direction with their reboot.
On for goof's sakes, Batman and Spider-Man make more money as t-shirts than they do as comics. The reason comics are so terrible is because they're not characters, they're products.
Alternate takes on beloved characters might be fun but they can never replace the original/main one. A side dish is all it ever will be, not the main course.
I disagree with the point. It’s not really like the mainstream version of the DC characters don’t change over the years. Batman has been around for a long time now, and there’s a number of different eras of the character, and they may as well be different characters call Batman for all they’re alike to one another. These new Absolute stuff could’ve been the new mainline DC titles, and they could’ve run with it for as long as it sold, and then revamped the whole thing into some other take. Same with Superman. What even is the “real” version of Superman? Which comic book version is it? Or is the real version one of the cartoons? Or is the real version the Richard Donner? Would Lex Luthor even matter to the degree he does in comic now if it wasn’t for the Bruce Timm cartoon? I know I could not give a single shit about ‘90s red head Lex Luthor. The Bruce Timm version that combines businessman Kingpin Lex with mad scientist Lex seemed to have become the main comic book version at some point. The original Ultimate line also kind of did replace the mainline Marvel stuff. Marvel didn’t just do it outright. But when the Ultimate line was doing better and seen as the hotter of the two, the 616 started functioning more like the Ultimate stuff. 616 started feeling more like the Ultimate line. When we’re shown Captain America fighting in World War 2 in Out of Time at the start of Vol. 5 it looks way more like Ultimate Captain America fighting in World War 2 than ole 616 Captain America’s World War 2 time. When Warren Ellis rebooted Iron Man in his Extremis run (which re-established classic Tony Stark as Iron Man as opposed to time displaced teen Tony Stark who’s had his age accelerated to be an adult) the tone of that title is more Ultimate than 616...like if Extremis was a Ultimate pitch to get Iron Man in a new Ultimate version of his more classic looking armor I’d believe it. The Ultimate version of the characters also ended up informing the MCU versions. Does anyone even want a Captain America anymore that’s not explicitly superhuman because of the Super Soldier Serum? I always found it kind of dumb went he got written as Marvel’s Batman given stuff he does in the 1940s.
If there are countless versions of the sane heroes, then which one is meant to be the so called real one! It's dumb, they could do something different like a world where there was never a Batman and maybe someone else became a different hero in Gotham. Or one where a different baby escaped from Krypton and came to Earth and had different powers from Superman and a different name. Yes I know some things like this have been done but they are not brave enough to do it as mostly comics outside the main line.
I have been reading comics since i was a child back in 1980. How many times has the dc universe been rebooted ? Crisis Zero hour Identity crisis/52 All those elsewords annuals and stories They all keep missing the point. And the point is .. Who will still be reading issue 78 of those rebooted characters ? That is why it never works.
When 52 crashed and burned Rebirth saved the day because they went back to real DC stories. Ending the Rebith line and taking a bulldozer to everything that worked was peak arrogance. No I don't want to see new versions of anyone. The problems were they weren't letting the chracters act like themselfs in the mainline comics in the first place. Superman has not been him self since Rebith. Tim Drake is completely unrecognizable at this point. Theirs is no loss of intrest in the real versions. Its frustration the original versions have been butchered for so long.
That's what I'm saying A lot of people always want to be like well it's because of the ultimate Universe and the new 52 is how I got into DC and Marvel and it's like okay that's great I'm glad we got you into comic books but it's not enough people to sustain that like you said people are going to want to go back to classy and that's the mistake that Marvel and DC keeps trying they keep trying to make alternate universes for the modern audience but the modern audience might stick around for the new stuff but like you said once said finishes out is veneer and is shininess they don't even go to the main continuity of DC and Marvel and most of them just kind of walk away
Why would i want to read a slightly different version of a character that already exists. I don't understand the attitude from some readers who hate the Absolute DC comics as if these characters are taking over for the originals. The original DC heroes still exist and the Absolute is another take on the DCU. Great more to choose from and more to read.😊
Occasionally, an idea explodes and becomes successful. Sometimes, that successful idea may be one that was less successful or even failed in the past. Or, it may be a very small tweak to an old idea or simply the buzz created by the creators involved. In this case, it is working for DC. Ironically, I did not think the "DC All In" 1-shot was very good. But, it did introduce the fact that the absoute and main universes were going to intertwine and the villain was Darkseid and, even though the intro was not that geat, the seeds it planted got me excited. Furthermore, it got me interested in reading DC again. And, to my surprise, it appears that several DC titles have been injected with new life. I have read at least 15 - 20 titles over the last couple of months and I found them all to be entertaining with several being great.
10:40 Marvel being the "big dog in the industry" is quite the statement. Their books are beyond horrible. DC has slightly better quality and this is coming from a once Marvel guy.
If you make an Alternate Universe many characters should be way different - some some what different - and Others simular - if you do it right you could make multiple great universes. U need the great stories of course....
Both are last ditch efforts to save their dying brands, Brands that they have spent a lot of time and effort destroying without understanding why those characters were popular for decades. When these efforts fizzle out, as they know they will, they will have exhausted every arrow in their quiver. The Damage is done, they never grew the next generation of comic readers, and it's too late to start now. The best versions of these characters will live on in the hearts of those who enjoyed them, but I think after this fizzles out, Marvel and DC are done.
Now we've seen parts of Marvel's 'What If?' series and some A.U.s and things from the First Ultimate Universe go on to influence or be brought over to 616 especially in the Case of Miles Morales who they REALLY Wanted to Push and Salvage (and they still do it too). And the 'Recent Creations' of the Absolute Versions stave off certain Public Domain Supers that will VERY MUCH be a force to worry about in a Decade. But in practice Absolute and Ultimate Universe 2 are probably not going to last. Or only last a liiiiittle Bit Longer than Ultimate Universe 1. Especially if they learn from Ultimate 1's mistakes and what brought it down
Maybe in the past this would be the case, but this was before the immense character swapping (race, gender, other). Now there are like 10 spidermen, 5 supermen and 100 symbiotes. Meanwhile minimal character development and repeated stories. Unless they dont reboot or make big changes, im out of the main continuity
Great commentary. I would be more happy and intrigued with brand new characters that challenge the philosophies and core of the established characters. Maybe that’s too much for modern writers rot accomplish compared to using established character names to sale their ideas.
None of these new people are going to stay around for the long haul we been here already and you focus more on the dumb changes they make to the character than the story
Exactly like I'm so tired are people telling me oh well I got into comic books because of the Ultimate Universe and the new 52 okay and congratulations but it's not enough of y'all to sustain this and my thing is okay but you knew about comics before the new 52 and the ultimates why can't you acknowledge the old stuff that's classic stuff that's been around instead of trying to hope for a modern take on the characters to get you interested in the comments how about read the actual continuity of Marvel and DC that's already here without DC and Marvel having to modernize the characters in order for you to get into them
I don't read new Comics because I refuse to spend hard earned money everytime marvel and DC tries something like this. Every few years I have to deal with this and frankly I'm just tired.
The entire absolute universe feels like a wasted opportunity to create brand new characters. Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman could have easily been a new "big 3" group of heroes instead of being a meaningless alt universe that'll be forgotten about.
Of course they can't, why tf do you think both universes are running concurrently? Although I wouldn't mind in Ultimate Universe replaced mainstream Marvel which has been lackluster for more than a decade. Jed Mackay and Al Ewing's backs must hurt from carrying 616 Marvel holy fuck
As a casual reader (someone who reads comics now and then like every few months) ultimate /absolute >>>>>>>>mainstream They just have more interesting stories compared to the generic paraphrased stuff
I certainly hope Absolute Universe NEVER replaces mainstream DC. Absolute is absolute GARBAGE! I HATE dark and gritty versions of Superman, Batman and DC heroes. That is why I loathed New 52 and Post-Crisis continuity. Earth-Two Pre-Crisis DCU was my favorite iteration. As for Ultimate, it also is awful, even Ultimate Spider-Man is mediocre at best.
Yes, they can't replace mainstream heroes, but unfortunately, the mainstream heroes you're referring to, haven't existed in comics for about one and a half decades. The "main universes" of Marvel and DC are hollowed out shadows of they once were. The characters are barely recognizable and the stories lack imagination and epicness, it's all woke now, the characters are sissies , all the villains are heroes now, several iconic heroes have been put on the back burner for boring, uninteresting new characters and Very soon there will be a "no punch rule" marking another fine print in the pursuit of Justice (as if there aren't enough already). So, even the mainstream heroes aren't timeless anymore... Because they're all soft and unrecognizable now... It's pathetic.
Comics have that magical ability to show stylized art for visual effect. So stuff like that doesn't bother me. I have read enough alternative Batman variants I am done with them. I just want to read a more classical Batman.
Ultimates & Absolute comics offer a welcome diversion in a bland mainstream comics landscape, but are no substitute for the original characters.
Pre crisis Earth-2 comics were the best ongoing alternate universe stories, they had the balls to kill off Batman and not cop out by retconning it or having someone replace him (years before they knew Crisis was coming to change everything). DC and Marvel would never have the balls to do that today
People want different, then they get it, and quickly want the original back.

That was a good Elseworld.
I hated that movie.
They do need a full reboot of their writing staffs.
Remember that the biggest reason new 52 failed is that we were stuck with characters that didn't feel like our characters. These new guys are our characters but they aren't our mains.
Yes, a dark and more violent take in classic heroes just don't work.
I still believe that the New 52 ruined DC in the long run.
I don’t want the Ultimate and Absolute books to last forever. Let them end naturally.
Exactly. Same for the main universes, reboot
In my opinion they need to do some reboot, make these heroes heroic again
YES! This, more than anything else, is what I feel Marvel and DC both need to do with their mainstream universes.
The big issue that I have with all these reimaginations of classic heroes is the dark and edge stuff. Why don't make a more light and soft take like the Pre-Crisis Era?
I liked the concept on Ultimate Marvel. But it’s time to move on.
Has there ever been a cinematic universe cross-over?
No
@ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΑ-ε1ω
Thanks!
I couldn't get into the "absolute" stuff. It was absolute cringe to me.
Just write a good regular Flash book. Don't need a Absolute Flash book.😠
And they never will because the Absolute Universe and the New Ultimate Universe were made for the wrong reasons and not the right reasons.
Agreed without question!
👍👍🎯🎯
Those wrong reasons being, though?
How were they made for the wrong reasons?
No but they can give good ideas and Absolute is going to cross over with the main DCU anyway.
By issue 4 of Absolute Batman you already get a fill in artist. I’m out after issue 2 tomorrow.
Great commentary. I would be more happy and intrigued with brand new characters that challenge the philosophies and core of the established characters. Maybe that’s too much for modern writers rot accomplish compared to using established character names to sale their ideas.
Bring back the manga Marvel series drawn by Ben Dunn!!!
🤟Absolute Forever!!🤟
😂
That’s definitely someone not familiar with how these things work at DC and Marvel.
None of these new people are going to stay around for the long haul we been here already and you focus more on the dumb changes they make to the character than the story
Exactly like I'm so tired are people telling me oh well I got into comic books because of the Ultimate Universe and the new 52 okay and congratulations but it's not enough of y'all to sustain this and my thing is okay but you knew about comics before the new 52 and the ultimates why can't you acknowledge the old stuff that's classic stuff that's been around instead of trying to hope for a modern take on the characters to get you interested in the comments how about read the actual continuity of Marvel and DC that's already here without DC and Marvel having to modernize the characters in order for you to get into them
Superb dialogue, i'm a donna troy/wondergirl fan 💪🏾
I don't read new Comics because I refuse to spend hard earned money everytime marvel and DC tries something like this.
Every few years I have to deal with this and frankly I'm just tired.
The entire absolute universe feels like a wasted opportunity to create brand new characters. Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman could have easily been a new "big 3" group of heroes instead of being a meaningless alt universe that'll be forgotten about.
they will merge in 1-2 years.
As a casual reader (someone who reads comics now and then like every few months) ultimate /absolute >>>>>>>>mainstream
They just have more interesting stories compared to the generic paraphrased stuff
I disagree with that New Ultimate Universe
Stop listen to Nick Lowe Hypocrite word
Please 🙏
I know what you mean about negative comments. Poor little snowflakes.😭😭
Tiny head Batman looks ridiculous (disproportionate to his oak tree thighs)
Comics have that magical ability to show stylized art for visual effect. So stuff like that doesn't bother me. I have read enough alternative Batman variants I am done with them. I just want to read a more classical Batman.
First!!!
You sure?😂
