Great video Mike, agreed on all points. It does raise an interesting question though. How does a well-established act (like Dream Theater, but plenty of others apply) remain innovative and shake things up late in their career? If what you release is too different from what fans expect you risk alienating a large portion of your fanbase. (I'm an Opeth fan, I prefer their pre-Heritage stuff. I'm sure you remember that drama.) Dream Theater has the added challenge of using a lot of different elements in their songs already, across many albums, so its easy for them to be derivative of themselves. Not trying to defend them but its an interesting problem that every successful musical act struggles with eventually. How would you approach that challenge?
All the members of DT are approaching retirement age. They can easily just take it easy and stop releasing new albums or just retire completely. But they just like playing music and they are just making the music they like to make. They already have more classic and amazing albums than most other bands and there is nothing they need to do to prove themselves. Most other musical artists would have stopped making music at this point. I think it’s a good thing they still want to record and perform music.
@@necroplastful so if DT does something different like the Astonishing, the fans hate it, but if they do something similar to typical DT albums, the fans hate it. They can never win.
@@michaelflorczyk1394 Portnoy left DT in 2010. That was 11 years ago. They need to get over that already. DT has one of the worst fanbases ever and they can be so annoying and irritating.
The more I've listened to the song the more I've liked it, don't think it's one of their better songs but I dig it. Biggest plus is Mangini on the drums, he hasn't sounded this good on any of the previous DT records.
@@beanman2206 I totally agree! He complemented the music 100% perfectly on self titled. I don't get the pure hate, he's a master's master. Even though I prefer Portnoy's style and touch, I still adore Mangini's style and how his music fits the composition.
We've a term in Turkey: ''Just fart it out and line them one by one'', usually something you'd say to mock something redundant being continiously done by some person or people. This song is exactly that. Just fucking banal at this point, nothing of it is even slightly exciting, same old DT loop we're expected to be elated about.
@@conniethesconnie Im not sure its possible for me to get tired of any band that I love. I never understood that mentality of people. Things dont stop being good.
@@wpgspecb It may not stop being good, but you can still get fatigued from it. It's like eating a delicious meal, if you keep eating it every single day, you're gonna want variety at some point even if it's consistently good every single time, it's just a matter of wanting something different after a certain point.
This reminds me when Dream Theater released a song called Never Enough when in a muse-like style they shout at the fans that they can't make everyone happy no matter what they do, released in 2005 has the same meaning today. There is people who simply has expectations that cannot be filled anymore. Specially those still stuck on Images and Words and Metropolis pt 2 released 30 years ago
I mean, it's totally understandable, Metallica is my favorite band of all time, and I literally dont care for much of anything they did in the past decade, other than a few things here and there. Being a fan of a band doesnt me you have to love everything they do.
This is very on the point. My initial reaction to this song was exactly the same: I've heard this before. Thanks for proving me right. That being said: It's pretty amazing that these guys can whip up something that makes long-time fans feel like they're not even trying anymore, and it's still on a level that very few others can manage. "Mum, what's for dinner?" "Filet mignon" "Nooo, not filet mignon again..." We are a spoiled bunch.
He didn't prove anything, he just validated your opinion. DT didn't write this for you. They wrote it for themselves and whoever would like it. Get over it.
Since nobody asked, I'll give my opinion. This is the best DT song since something from a dramatic turn of events. I feel they haven't done anything this good since then. Still, this is a very DT style DT song. I really like it, but I can totally see your point of view. That said, I really hope there is some more interesting and unique stuff on the full record.
Exactly. Mangini's drumming was fantastic on that one. People hat the sounds on it, but I like that it doesn't have that triggered/sampled sounds they used after. This new release has great times and sounds.
I absolutely hated the last few albums from them, had no interest in listening to them. This song came out and it caught my attention. Started back listening to all thier other mangini stuff. This is a true meld of Magini with the band.
@@harveydents Thats funny. Assume you don't wathc a lot of his content? He has been a fan of Dream theater for a long, long time and introduced a lot of his fanbase to them. So him critiquing this comes from a fans perspective who either wants something different or has so over indulged on their stuff that anything that alludes to it, instead of sounding nostalgic, just sounds like "been there, done that". And that's a fair perspective. This is, after all, titled "Why I AM bored of dream theater" and not "why Dream Theater is boring now"
totally agree. its a burnout formula. dream theater have been loosing their song orientation, groove, "free space" starting with kevin moore, Derek Sherenian, and of course MP leaving was a huge loss
13:58 That's exactly how I'd describe this entire song: Dream Theater by numbers. It feels like they had no real ideas and resorted to using old tropes and ideas to churn out a new Dream Theater song. It's just Dream Theater for the sake of being Dream Theater. I don't think it's a bad song, it's ok I guess, but that's hardly a compliment.
I've been listening to them for around like 10 years and I completely agree with you. To me, it feels like the 2 year album/tour cycle is taking its toll on them. Since Systematic Chaos they haven't been experimenting with genres or styles outside what they've been doing for a while. I don't know if it's a contract they have or whatever, but the more time passes the more I think Portnoy was right when he thought they needed a break. They release around 9 songs every 2 years, most of them way over 5 minutes long, extremely complex. I feel like their songs lately are mostly execution based, like exercises they stick together with some general melodic idea. These kinds of songs need time to be written carefully, trimmed here and there, evolved. Like you said, it's nothing bad, just not that original by a band who used to be in their best years. It feels as if they release everything they write, but sometimes it's better to choose the best you have been writing for 6 years than release everything you come up with every 2.
Wholeheartedly agree! The Astonishing was something new and I applaud them for doing that, but overall, yeah, I feel a total stagnation. Where are the days of Six Degrees when they tried all sorts of cool new sounds and stuff? I miss those days. They don’t have anything to prove to themselves anymore, maybe that’s the problem, they just need to keep the show going because it’s their livelihood. Portnoy brought a musical edge to band I sorely miss. Mangini is awesome at what he does, but Portnoy had so much more than just the drumming.
I've been a Dream Theater fan for about a decade. I like The Alien a lot, kind of BECAUSE it's "Dream Theater by numbers" which just came together in a way that worked for me in THIS song. To the people who did *not* like The Alien, a word of encouragement: Dream Theater's laurels rest on their albums. To me, no other way makes more sense for listening to their work other than to put one of the records on front-to-back. That's not to say I don't just pop a song or two on from time to time! And as a result, I have more than a handful of DT songs I dislike. I Walk Beside You is probably my least favourite song in their entire discography. I would never put it on on its own. But in the context of Octavarium? I think it works beautifully and the album flows through it perfectly. See how you feel about The Alien as part of a larger piece.
The way I see it, your analysis is more or less an acknowledgement of Dream Theater knowing their audience and what they tend to like hearing from them. It might be a case of them falling into what I like to call the AC/DC effect, but I can't say I'm complaining because it still sounds good to me either way. And that's why I always look forward to when they announce a new album.
@@MaxRamos8 This is the most extreme reaction to a song that could ever exist. DT at their worst is still not in any way comparable to Nickelback. DT didn’t sell out, they didn’t sacrifice their sound to please the masses like Nickelback did.
My first impression was much the same - good song but nothing we haven't heard from Dream Theater in the past. My hope is that, like Distance Over Time, the real gems get revealed as the album comes out. Untethered Angel was a quality song, but Pale Blue Dot and At Wit's End were the standout tracks on that album. I'm expecting the same with the new album. I'm sure I'll like it, I don't think Dream Theater has ever released a "bad" album but, taken on it's own, The Alien is pretty middle of the road.
Something else I want to get off my mind. Some praise Dream Theater for their heavier parts and kind of frown at the "cheesy" post-chorus stuff. Me? I love the post-chorus parts! I'd eat that cheese all day, every day! Dream Theater are absolutely elite at creating those pop/power ballad melodies (too). The ability to switch between those two modes is one of the strengths and trademarks of this band and I think it's also why they've become as big as they have. I guess what I'm saying is: "I'm all about that cheese, 'bout that cheese 'bout that cheese (no chugging)" ;)
Totally agree. The guys in the band are all extremely talented and virtuosos, but I feel that they play into their talent way too much. I think some of their best work is when they are playing slower, melodic "power ballad" stuff that allows them to focus their genius on making an incredible song and not just technical shit for the sake of doing technical shit. That's why Scenes from a Memory was so good; it wasn't just about the heavy stuff. They had a ton of melodic parts throughout the album that work so well because of fantastic melodies, progressions and harmonies. The last three songs are perfect examples of this.
@@lucasimmons075 Yeah, 100%. Without The Spirit Carries On, Through Her Eyes and One Last Time to settle the mood, SFAM would not be the masterpiece it is. In fact, it would become tiring without a break in the (awesome) chaos that is Beyond This Life, Home, The Dance of Eternity, etc. Similarly, DT would NOT be DT without CLASSICS like Another Day, Space Dye Vest, The Silent Man, etc. It is this dichotomy between relentless metal and beautiful, catchy ballads that has made them the biggest prog metal band of this generation
There's a reason Images and Words is held in high regard, and it's because of the dynamics between cheese and heavy. "Another Day" is a good example. Sure, the first half is .....meh.... (okay, I love it, whatever) but when they go into the big epic part that you're supposed to hold your lighter up for at concerts, that part is so goddam fun!
They always release a fairly safe one for the first single- one that is instantly recognizable as Dream Theater. You made some really good points for sure. I think as a drummer, I just really fell in love with it right away. I also was blown away by the mix.
I'm not sure this one is a "safe one", generally, they release a song that's very accessible to everyone first and keep the really prog stuff for later, a safe song is "barstool warrior' for exemple, not "pale blue dot", The Alien is more pale blue than barstool, super prog 9mn song with crazy time signatures everywhere, i think one of the 6mn songs are the "safe ones", but nop, they didn't go that route this time.
@@tomh4244 get ready then... because I believe this album is going to be off the hook in terms of complexity based on this first release. One possibility is that this is the safest track on the album to release as a first single.
This is easily the best Dream Theater mix I think I've ever heard tbh. I love the way all the synths fit in, the drums are clear, the bass is clear, Labrie sounds just as good and clear as ever. Everything fits in place perfectly
I wasn't super sold on it when i first heard it, came out the gates as a 6.5/10. Seemed too safe and too paint by numbers DT. But, and big but, the more i've listened to it the more I started to love it. Production is the best its ever been, drums are really interesting, bass sounds great, a repetitive but an interesting time signature 17/16 in most parts to keep things interesting and unexpected. lots of variation on the riffs and melodic ideas. Great solos on both guitar and keyboard and honestly apart from the first verse I really dug the vocals. now i would say The Alien is more like a 8.5/10 for me and has been the best "Single" from DT in a very long time. My favorite part of the songs is actually the brief part with the heavy choir and the palm muted guitars at 9:07, wish they let that part go on a little longer. But music is subjective! you have a lot of great points but DT sounding like DT has always both pissed off and pleased fans and today I am pleased.
Is that a Widek Pfp ? 😍 Same here, listening multiple times and I kind of ”get it” now ! I like the intensity of the ending, and the solos (except the first one by JP)
_"My favorite part of the songs is actually the brief part with the heavy choir and the palm muted guitars at __9:07__, wish they let that part go on a little longer."_ Yes. I felt like that would have been a really epic outro. But they just play it once and end the song...
I'm in the boat where I've never really been able to get into Dream Theater whatsoever. I can tell they're all insanely talented musicians and songwriters, but idk, there's just something about them (idk what it is) that doesn't really click for me.
Honestly I was in your position two years ago, but I became a DT fanatic once I gave them 3 chances. It seriously took 3 tries and it finally clicked. Give Images another listen, and try songs like Solitary Shell and Take Away My Pain. You will notice their catalogue has a nice balance between simple pieces and technical pieces that makes the listening experience much more enjoyable. Just give it another shot. I had to do that with Opeth too, took me a while to get into the death metal stuff, but now I love it.
Personally, though I love technically challenging music, when the narrative dimension is gone, so am I. Something like Luca Turilli's Rhapsody, Wintersun or Ayeron is about my sweet spot.
Agreed. I more than appreciate their marvelous musicianship but like listening to a lengthy jazz piece, I tune out or get bored and switch it for something more direct and attention grabbbing.
@@joshuafult84 The first song I heard from them was Metropolis and LaBries voice put me off from the band for a bit. But I was really into growls at the time and his soft vocals gave me insecurity in my masculinity. But listen to the acapella of Images and Words and you'll realize that at the time Labrie was a monstrous singer. Definitely not the weakest link of the band

I personally liked The Alien. But I just got really into Dream Theater a few months ago, so the familiar stuff in The Alien is still pretty new to me. Good job with calling me out 😂
Long time listener here. Love it as much as Systematic Chaos and Dramatic Turn. Plus, the album doesn’t even come out until another THREE months from now, so I assume this is just a starter that establishes an entire theme we haven’t heard yet. It’s rather silly to go jabbing at a song that isn’t even nearly as long in duration as the rest of an unreleased album. I respect Mike, but he’s whatever. Don’t let his justifications ruin your experience with DT, or anyone’s opinion for that matter. That first year of finding a new prog band is always something that shouldn’t be tainted.
@@almightyhotdoglady5383 I just understand where he comes from. I’ve gotten tired of bands that I have listened to for awhile when they start to get cliche with their new material, but I still think it’s good. I’m just a newer fan that thinks everything by Dream Theater sounds amazing right now
@@kylekunce7867 Yee, I didn’t mean that Mike was silly for doing this as he makes his points and I can get down with it, I’m just personally keeping myself stripped from any thoughts or opinions on the song until I get the full package (I like it anyway). Love DT. Love this song, now that I've listened to it a few times. One thing I will say, is that this is the best Mangini has sounded yet. I'm a fan of his and always felt that he was held back a bit, whether it was the mix or whatever. The thing is, just like any band, you inherently have a sound. I'm an Iron Maiden fan as well, and you know full well that they have a distinct sound, that as soon as you hear it, you know it's them. Although, the new song is a a bit different. Call it comfort food for the ear. Or, this could be an old pair of jeans that just fit right. The point is that after a while, we come to expect something from our favorite bands that, when they change it (i.e. The Astonishing), fans don't like it. Give the fans what they want, a DT song that sounds like a DT song. Mike, you're in a hard place. You're a huge fan, but also a musician that understands the what and hows of what they're doing. It's almost like you're too smart for your own good. You instinctively find yourself analyzing stuff rather than just listening to it for enjoyment. I feel for you and respect you for it. Love the channel. Rock On!! 🤘
Poor Mangini was getting screwed hard in the drum mixing for years now, especially in Astonishing and self-titled. But DOT and this new album's drum mix is going to be fat beefy and tasty. My personal preference on drum tone is Portnoy's more tight snare snappy sound that Carter Beauford from Dave Matthews uses. But Mangini makes that "metal" drum mix sound amazing on this track.
Dream Theater is my favorite band of all times, it’s the only band that made me cry…and I totally agree with you regarding the new song when you say “we get it…you’re DT”.
@@dominikweber4305 He doesent. It is the only band that ever got me close to crying. And that part was the Clean section right before The solo to a nightmare to remember. It hit even harder when U got rid of the vocals. Bcs the vocals made it clear that section wasn't meant to be that emotional.
I reached this point with Dream Theater over 10 years ago, by the time A Dramatic Turn of Events came out I felt like I'd heard everything before and so gave up on them, hadn't realised just how thoroughly they were recycling ideas from the early 90's though until your demonstration here.
I feel the same way, since adtoe. I remember hearing John's solo in on the backs of angels and I felt like I had heard that solo before. Although some parts of adtoe were also fresh and exciting to me, it really starts to sound the same since their self titled album.
@@chrisl5973 That's why I really liked The Astonishing because it was a breath of fresh air, completely different mood change. With these upcoming longer pieces around the 20 min mark I have high hopes for this new record on theme changes
They're making exactly the music they want to make. Remember, they earn their living from this, have a fan (customer) base they want to satisfy, and have families to support. They've already made more classic albums than 99.9% of bands, and their legacy is set. They have nothing left to prove to anyone. They could fart on a CD and sell it, and they've already accomplished their mission.
Yes! Exactly! At this point they are just making the music they like to make. They could probably just retire if they wanted to. Just be happy they still make music.
@@jb_50w78 I think they've always made the music they've wanted to make - but they're older and a bit more comfortable. Point being, they've always done their shit on their terms
@@dlc435 not always. In the 90s when they recorded Falling into Infinity they were stuck having to make more accessible music according to the demands of the record label they were with at the time and they almost disbanded and gave up. But for a while now they have never had that problem and could always just make whatever kind of music they wanted.
@@jb_50w78 That's the one exception. Have you read their biography Lifting Shadows? The rest of the band actually didn't mind, except for Portnoy. Luckily Portnoy did care, otherwise that album would've imploded the band That being said, I still think FII is a great record.
In DT's defence, when you have been a band for that long, it's hard to out new and unique music. They have produced so many albums over the three decades Let's not forget their last album came out two years ago! That's not a long time. Maybe taking more time would have helped? Either way, they either need to do something very drastic like an Opeth to really change things up but then you risk alienating your fans.
Man that outro from Ministry of Lost Souls always gets me off guard. Seriously, that shit summons something seriously deep and meaningful and painful in me, but it hurts so much. (Maybe it's because the first time I heard it I was playing Final Fantasy 7 lol) it only happens with that song, it's unbelievable, definitely agree with you on this one, my favorite outro of all time too, (lol and I discovered it because of your "Dream Theater does pop better than popstars" video) it's just way too good.
Something I’ve noticed about the singles Dream Theater releases leading up to the full album release - they always pale in comparison to they songs they DON’T release as singles. For example: when they released Untethered Angel, Paralyzed, and Fall Into The Light as singles from the Distance Over Time album, I gave them all multiple listens, and thought “Ok. Pretty cool.” Then the album got released, and I heard songs like Barstool Warrior, S2N, At Wits End, and Pale Blue Dot, and fell in love with them instantly. To this day, those are my 4 favorite tracks on that album. That exact thing has happened to me with the last several DT albums. So, with that said, i’m still hopeful that there will be some awesome stuff on the upcoming album. A lot of bands seem to do the opposite - they release the better tracks as singles, then you listen to the rest of the album and it ends up being a little underwhelming. That’s just MY own observation.
good video! I have the similar feeling with you. In China we have an old word which means how much you love it before, how much you hate it at the certain point. if DT release new songs, I will listen to it, I will always wait for new surprise, just like you
I was heavily into Dream Theater with their first album, proud to be on that train from the beginning. Joined the fan club, got all of the fan club CDs, bought all of the Ytse Jam albums and saw them several times in concert, meeting them 3 times. But since Black Clouds, I've been completely bored with the same variations on the same melodies over and over. I admit to only listening to their last 5 albums a couple of times or so but that's because I love them so much, I don't want fuel for my dislike of those albums. It's not Mangini, he's incredible and I love his playing. I used to think it was Labrie because his style never clicked for me but in the end, it's the songs. Your video is a masterclass in what not to do for prog bands, some get so repetitive. Makes me wonder though, was Portnoy's songwriting the key to unlocking their strengths? The best band in the world, that bores me to tears. Dream Theater, the AC/DC of prog (only I loved the recent AC/DC album, they can pull it off).
Dude, I am right there with ya. I love Dream Theater, have since 91, I think Mangini is great, but they have been so hit and miss in the 21st century. I mean, I'd rather have Dream Theater making songs that I don't care for than Taylor Swift doing literally anything, so there's that. I just find Petrucci's riffs, particularly along the low string around the 5-8th frets, just sounds like an assembly line. Again, I love Dream Theater, I still go see them, I still consider myself a fan. Just haven't been all that excited by them lately. That said, when I saw them in 2017 on the Images and Words tour, I was front row and basically giggled like a kid for 2 1/2 hours, so there's that.
Maybe, because whenever I heard MP’s project since he left DT, I feel like he’s carrying the mood of his DT era. I mean, every project he’s in, I tend to like it. Even current LTE kinda sounds so fresh compared to The Alien.
They’ve been kind of on cruise control these past few albums. Although the instrumentation never ceases to amaze, the lack of creativity is what I think makes their more recent songs forgettable.
While it's nothing groundbreaking, it's an amazingly solid (if typical) Dream Theater song. And for a first single I'm with it. Liked this way more than Untethered Angel for sure. But I will agree, it is indeed safe as far as a Dream Theater composition goes.
Ina vaccuum without any other dream theater existing, it's a decent song. The song feels like a mix of 4 of their older song with barely anything special :(
Dream Theater is my favorite band but they have lost their touch without Mike. Now he's back and I'm sure everyone will notice the difference. Now my boys are back 😎🔥 and I'm sure they'll be better than ever 👊🏼
I have to agree. Mangini is amazing and one of my favorite drummers, but dream theater is Mike Portnoy’s baby just as much as it is John Petrucci and John Myung
It seems like John Petrucci can be creative but no longer under the brand name Dream Theater. What I mean is his solo album is great as is the latest Lte album. It feels like each song or piece (cause they're instrumental), has a story and character of its own. But the last DT album and this song just bleed into one with nothing separating them.
This is what's great about Periphery. Because Periphery has succesfully separated the band from their $$$, they're free to make whatever music they want. Remember, Dream Theater is John Petrucci's bread and butter. His day job
@@forentertainment3259 Nah I liked it. Also if u hear the deluxe edition they have some great improv jams that sound awesome and different than the composed pieces on the album. In fact from the previous albums there are only a few select tracks that I keep coming back to.
@@nikelodeon6852 Don't get me wrong, I like LTE3 just as I like this song. And I've listened to the whole thing, but the jams, while fun, I'm not gonna go back to. The main songs have a lot more of the Dream Theater-isms than the first two LTE records, and something like Hypersonic to me falls into the category of "these bits worked before, let's toss them into this song".
Id say I a fusion jazz person and Dream Theater is like a bad dream with fake Theater on a loop where the bad girl friend in the dream is right behind you, as you try to get away running up the hill in slow motion.........I have not slept in weeks after hearing this song......in slow motion creeping up on me......night after night, after night, its like ABBA with double kicks. Thank you very much! You speak from my heart, but you could say what I tried, but in much fewer words than I used and therefore, a big thank you! I think Mangini does a pretty and solid work, but he doesn't write songs.
After creating as much music as DT have, it’s gonna be hard to still be “themselves” without sounding a bit repetitive at times. Guess they should pull a King Gizzard and go microtonal lol Regardless of the stagnation at times, I love these guys forever. Strong points. This is what we get for being DT fans for so long lol
Nice comment! I've been a Dream Theater fan since the "Pull Me Under" video. I didn't hear King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard until about a year ago. Their microtonal style and "Spinal Tap" imagery is quite diverse and original sounding. I've heard much from them now and can say that they still surprise me. I don't think Dream Theater needs to go microtonal, however. Although Dream Theater uses many scales and modes in their music, they still only use about 3% of the Total Scale and Mode Possibilities. All they need are some new scales and modes to add to their Understanding and Abilities. Search for the "Guitar Totality" book online for more information on ALL POSSIBLE SCALES AND MODES using the 12 notes of the chromatic scale... 🌎✌🌿🎶
I want to take the steak metaphor a step further... We get accustomed to that rich, well crafted fillet from our favorite restaurant. What do we do when we still want a fillet but are tired for the same one? Go somewhere else( find a different band) BUT for dream theater, their albums spanning from metropolis to even black clouds gave what i think to be the feel and experience of getting that dt fillet of each album as if it were from a completely different restaurant while still being at the same place. Like each of those albums in that span was a like how different cultures approach making a fillet at different restaurants. You didnt have to go anywhere else to have that dr prog experience. The problem now is that i feel like we are getting the same style of fillet just reinvented or arranged differently from the past 3 or 4 fillets. I still have mad respect and always like what they do. Just what has been on my chest for a while now too
TBH I have to agree, the past few albums don't have the magic sauce as they used to. But this happens to every band if you think about it. Except Leprous, god damn they kick ass every new release.
Haken and Leprous both, in my opinion. Now, that said, they are many releases behind DT, and as they age will likely begin to fall into the same problem.
Hey, the video finally returned! Fitting, how they've won a Grammy for the track not too long ago. Adequate critique. I appreciate the in-depth comparisson with the other tracks in their catalogue most of all. Illustrates how the newer stuff tends to feel "samey" more often than not.
I still love it. But I would love if dream theatre picked up some different instruments. They already have a very classical take on the genre why not go full fusion.
I agree with a lot of the points you make, but at this point, I don’t really care what they do as long as they enjoy doing it. Most of their new stuff hadn’t had as much magic and sheer emotion as their old stuff, but I still find it enjoyable to listen to. I highly doubt this is going to be the best song on the album. Even with their more repetitive routine now, their epics have stayed consistently incredible. I personally really liked the self titled album but it wouldn’t have been anywhere near as good without Illumination Theory. I have faith that the title track of this album is going to be great. The singles aren’t usually the best song of their albums anyway, I don’t think the first song on ANY of their albums is my favorite from it. I love Dream Theater, and I love everyone in it and what they do, but they have gotten rather repetitive. Mainly, though, I’ll keep supporting them and buying the albums and stuff as long as I can still enjoy it, and if they enjoy making it, which it seems they do. They could’ve retired a long time ago and lived comfortably with what they got, most bands would have already. I’m just glad they still enjoy making the music, and I’m still enjoying listening to it, even if it is a little repetitive and unoriginal at times. That being said, I found Mangini incredible on this track, I think they may have finally found a way to properly show how great he is on these albums. Also, they finally mixed JM correctly after like what, almost 35 years now?
personally i love at wits end and pale blue dot alot. so original and breaking all illusions and bridges in the sky and lost not forgotten. definitely some of my favs by dt from the mike mangine era
I'm personally in love with the Mangini era. Bridges in the sky, pale blue dot, are sooooo amazing! My only wish as a DT fanatic is if they tried songs like Best Of Times vibes again. That's what got me hooked on DT in the first place, but bands need to change no matter what and I'm fine with that.
When Falling into Infinity was released, it was well, “different”. But it definitely grew on me. And compared to whatever they’re doing nowadays, it’s definitely more pleasing to my ears. As much as I love DT and JP, they’re in need of a good producer to stir things up a little bit. 🤷🏻♂️
Sadly I agree with you and I have gone through this same experience with my other favorite bands like Rush. I don’t fault the bands, I know they’re giving it their absolute best effort but there is only so much amazement in the tank. I will say that I will take the same old Dream Theater or same old Rush etc. over the oceans of bullshit that passes of music out there!!! Lastly and most importantly, I love the actual band members (as I know them) as good, kind, family oriented people that I respect and root for to always succeed and carry on!
I decided to give this video a watch to see if I could better understand why people dislike this single. And... well, I sort of got my answer? Here's the thing - I do see your points, and I think that they're valid. But... at the same time, I absolutely can't agree with them lol. Almost every side-by-side comparison you made with songs from their previous albums didn't feel like they were THAT similar to me. Even if, in terms of music theory, they might have aspects that connect them, I really feel like The Alien didn't really share that many similarities with the other parts you mentioned. And this is as someone who has listened to all of Dream Theater's albums over the course of a couple of years. I have... a worrying amount of their music committed to memory, and honestly I find I'm able to appreciate the differences even when similar parts come up. That's not to say I'm somehow better at enjoying them, just that personally I don't really focus on similarities, and think more about differences. Since none of the riffs are necessarily IDENTICAL, I find I pick out the differences in them. I do agree with the end of this video though, and fully feel your pain on the assessment that you feel pressure to talk about Dream Theater when they release new stuff. And to that, I say... honestly, maybe don't make a video about the new album? Just listen to it when it comes out, let it digest, and don't rush to make a review or something. Maybe down the line mention if you like/dislike the album, but don't do much beyond that. It sounds to me as though you feel burnt out from the band, because currently you just passively enjoy their material without being super enamoured with it, but people EXPECT you to have a lot to say when really you don't. I personally still classify Dream Theater as progressive metal, but then again my definition is slightly different. I feel like your definition is more accurate to the term "progressive", but it feels off when applied to music. Like, for something to be genuinely progressive, I feel like it'd have to reach a lot of people to actually progress the art form. And, as big as prog metal bands like Dream Theater are, they don't have a whole lot of reach in the grand scheme of music, making it difficult for them to be progressive in a literal sense. I personally define prog more as pushing boundaries for their own self-contained sound, and I do think Dream Theater still experiment within their own sound. Sure, one of the early riffs in The Alien is reminiscent of a riff in Sacrificed Sons, but I feel like the tempo and the chords set behind the riffs help give it a different vibe. Jordan Rudess does an excellent solo, which he does pretty often, but he did use an odd and new effect for a short time in the solo, which gives it a bit of extra flavour. It's not as much variation as before, but I feel like Dream Theater still try to figure out new ways to freshen up their sound. That's just my thoughts though.
Spot on. And what about those creepier modal interchanges? They're digging into their King Crimson/ELP side of chords. They're telling a story, and they've made a style for themselves while still delivering satisfying songs to headbang in 7/8.
It's literally nothing new. It's like yngwie. It all the same thing over and over again. I heard it all already, so why pay they to be lazy in their writing.
I think this latest song solidifies even more why Portnoy “fan boys” feel the way they do: no matter how impressive Mangini is, Portnoy’s era is more original. It reminds me of the post-Waters Pink Floyd and post-Blackmore Deep Purple: very good but something is missing; kind of a paint-by-numbers feel.
Those are such great examples. Post Waters Floyd went for more of an ambient, guitar based thing, and post Blackmore Purple went for more of a mature musicianship thing. They weren't trying to create the past.
Thank you for this video Mike, I'm by no means a Dream Theatre fan but you made this very easy to see exactly what you're talking about even without me having much experience with their music. That's why I watch this channel, cheers man. \m/
Dream Theater has done so much for music. I appreciate they have stayed loyal to their roots and principles. Is hard for a prog band to remain relevant and fresh at the same time. I was not excited by this new song, but I don’t mind they keep doing what they do.
You did a great job in this video articulating what I was feeling while listening to the new Dream Theater song, I’ve been an avid fan since SFAM and I loved some of the songs on Distance Over Time but The Alien did nothing for me. Really hoping the rest of the album is better. For some reason my feelings on The Alien sent me down a Porcupine Tree/ Steven Wilson rabbit hole, it’s still prog but not the same type. I described the Alien to my friends as “paint by numbers” Dream Theater
I remember JP saying a few years ago that they didn't listen to other bands, in the context of while they were in the studio, maybe because he'd read of all the comparisons to Muse that were made around the time Octavarium was made... I seem to remember Portnoy turning Petrucci onto Muse around that time. Point being, they probably don't do this so they won't inadvertently have songs show up on their new albums that sound like other bands. Well, maybe they should be listening to other music, just before, and while they're writing new material. Could be what is needed.
After X number of albums we all need to realize - they have a fundamental style, and natural tendencies. So .... ya -> It's Dream Theatre. Which for me is -> "Exquisite execution, as always"
I've been a fan for one year and I've heard the same structure before. The first time I listen to The Alien, I don't like it for the same reason (DT's generator). Now, I liked it, yeah, Maybe, it's very similar but with another style for me, sounds so good. A Dramatic Turn of Events has too much from Images and Words and I love both.
100% Agree with you. I am an old Dream Theater fan (Since 1993) and remember how it felt when "A Change of Seasons" came out. Having been used to their first 3 albums at the time, I can still remember the feeling of excitement of hearing new melodic phrases and cadences. I remember also getting excited with their side projects as well because they all sound different from DT too like Chromakey, LTE, etc. I should say that after "Octovarium", I do not feel the same excitement and anticipation anymore. I still listen but especially the last 3~4 albums, I have not listened to it fully because like you, the thrill is sort of gone.
I think the drum sounds these days are different purely based on use of blended samples and drum tuning. Even if you listen to LTE3 it sounds almost identical to new DT but with a more natural sounding snare drum.
All of these will only make sense to all the old fans. But DT are doing their things not only to feed and please the old ones. New fans (listeners) are also coming by listening to their new albums and songs. Senior fans may call these boring things, but the new listeners may find all of these are inspiring and lead them to look and grab for the older and older albums. Some people called them finished musician, at the retirement age, you name it. But in the end, it's not only about pattern or nostalgic rhythm. They have their own identity as a band, which will always be carried to all their fans, old and new one, and eventually the identity itself that brought them to the award. Appreciate for what have you done in this video. Great Stuff! Cheers!
For a band like DT, who have hundreds and hundreds of riffs just on one album, it's inevitable that riffs from different albums will sound similar. Can't think of one band with as many albums as DT that haven't repeated themselves at least once.
Exactly how I think. I've been listening DT since 93. Agreed with all the points. Hope the new album does not disappoint since I will attend my first DT show soon.
*_"So I'm gonna talk about why I don't wanna talk about it."_* I like that. I'm not sure it it's 'meta', or simply confusing, but it's is very *_human_*. Respect. I watched the "Alien" video on RUclips just the other day, and I have to say my reaction was not unlike yours. I thought 'meh'. It's okay I guess. I saw these guys live back in 2001 at the Florida Theatre in Jacksonville. They were 2nd on a 3 bill act: King's X, Dream Theater, and Joe Satriani. It was my first date with my now wife, and it was awesome. But unlike Tool, as these guys have gotten more sophisticated, they've actually gotten less interesting in some ways. The musicianship is incredible as always. But the music is just something I can no longer really relate to. They're leaving the stratosphere, and leaving me behind. Oh well. Guess they're the alien. tavi.
Hopefully the album delivers. It's not that I like every track of their last album (D/T) but at least it has bangers like Barstool Warrior, S2N, Wit's End, Pale Blue Dot, Viper King heck I even like Out of Reach.
No worries about not being onboard, Mike. I'm in the exact same boat with the new Iron Maiden record for most of the same issues. Not enough innovation, not fun, I don't feel anything. It happens. 🤷🏻♂️
its ridiculous, you could say the same thing about Bach or Mozart works, they didnt reinvent themselves every year. its just the music they do, and its unique.
Sure, but after so many years shouldn't there be some sort of evolution? I mean look at Maiden or Metallica as an example. Granted, it may not have worked out as well for Metallica but at least they gave it a shot. I still like what Dream Theater is currently doing but some branching out in their style wouldn't be a bad thing.
those two guys got repetative to, bouncing between a lot of the same melodic ideas more often then not. Mozart nd Bach also wrote almost all there music in a rediculously short period of time. See? i can criticize it, BECAUSE i love them.
I think it would be cool if Dream Theater did an album of 3 to 4 minute metal songs. Focusing all their talents into a 3 minute song would be epic. What do you guys think?
I’ve been saying that since octavarium. They gotta at least try to go outside of their comfort zone and arrange differently and also cut their songs down. I don’t mean ouuu there’s no songs over 10 minutes! What a change! Lol. I mean actual short songs. They need to try to chill on solos left and right , maybe some different genres incorporated into their songwriting? Like I’m sorry but they’re not a progressive band and haven’t been in what? 15 years? 20? Having a 20 minute epic on your album, odd time signatures doesn’t make you progressive. It’s regressive at this point.
Jordan Rudess was pretty open with that it was Portnoy that let him be more creative and free. Portnoy brings alot to all bands he is a part of, all aspects. Transatlantic and NMB, for me, is so much more interesting than DT the last decade. So I totally get that he felt the need to leave when the others did not want to take a brake. Just take minute and realize all the amazing albums Portnoy has been a part of since he left: The Whirlwind, Kaleidoscope, Absolute Universe, Similitude of a Dream, The Great Adventure, all albums with flying colors and winery dogs. He is a true genius. I still enjoy DT. But to me it's obvious now Portnoy took it from good/great to magical.
Your expression at 15:26 is how I've kinda always felt about DT. I've been a fan since 98' and I have always said DT are a "safe" band. Meaning most of all their tracks have TOO many similarities, it makes them a band that constantly plays it safe. They know their formula and I guess my issue is hoping they break that formula but it never happens. JPs Terminal Velocity was INCREDIBLE!! I feel THAT should be how DT sounds going forward. (but I understand obviously why) Still going to jam this record though. Cheers mate!
I must admit as you hit the nail on the head and the riff is precisely the same as the great debate but without the triplet picking to end . Overall good energetic song & im excited to hear the album in full but as a progressive metal band there is no longer any progressive element and thats what i used to love i prefer acts whi push boundaries e.g. Steven Wilson
I value your opinion, but I have to say I enjoy the song quite a bit. That said, you’re right - it’s the classic Dream Theater arrangement and it’s somewhat predictable. How, though, do you want them to differ? If you and me liked it the first 100 times then why would DT expect their fans not to like the 101st? As for your critique over their repeated use of the i - II (Neapolitan-esque chord) it’s a progression they use well, as do many neo-classical metal bands (which is a whole lot of metal). Although I will admit that I would like to hear DT try new ideas more as well.
22:17 - "But I don't call that Prog myself." Same here - I call it "Plateau Metal". I used to be one of the biggest DT/JP nerds, own a EBMM Majesty and practiced every JP solo meticulously... But they simply stopped "progressing" and have been resting on a plateau for quite a while. The new album title is pretty fitting: "A View From Top Of The World" - that's the plateau.
I've been listening to a lot of Train of Thought and Metropolis Pt. 2 recently, and there's just something about their current style of songwriting that doesn't sit right with me. I love the sound, but it just doesn't compare to stuff like The Dance of Eternity or In The Name of God for me. There's something about those songs and albums, or even Images and Words, Awake, etc that is missing from current Dream Theater. But then again, it makes me wonder how I'd feel if the release was reversed, if Dream Theater released The Alien in 1992 and released something like Metropolis Pt. 1 in 2021.
I guarantee you if it was reversed, people would call them sell outs. Their music was complex but there was more simplicity in the song writing that made them stand out to the crowd back then. Even though I love their new music, they could add that magic back which they sort of did with The Astonishing and their beautiful ballads, but the songs were like 2 min each tho.
Hard to say, but I feel the same way as you so its not just you. Is there a connection between the enjoyment of a song and the time in your life when you hear it? I don't know, but the only release in the last decade that "sits right with me" is LTE3. Seems to point to the importance of writing/production of the past bandmembers. Not a knock on Mangini, it's all subjective, but of course there's going to be songwriting differences when you change the principal songwriters.
I am so glad that you shared this specific take on this. I was almost pulling my hair out (metaphorically) the first time I listened because I was just like "But that's just the riff/melody from-" over and over. I still like it a ton after repeat listens but I am slightly worried too. I fucking love Dream Theater and have hope that the new album is a banger. But I adore the Astonishing so what do I know :^)
Great video Mike, agreed on all points.
All of this 👍👍🤘🤘🔥🔥
All the members of DT are approaching retirement age.
That is why I despise the people that shat all over The Astonishing. That ruined dt for me
@@necroplastful so if DT does something different like the Astonishing, the fans hate it, but if they do something similar to typical DT albums, the fans hate it.
Exactly my thought. It's not one of their best, but it's very good
even if the drum sound was terrible i thought he did an amazing job on the self titled
@@beanman2206 I totally agree! He complemented the music 100% perfectly on self titled. I don't get the pure hate, he's a master's master. Even though I prefer Portnoy's style and touch, I still adore Mangini's style and how his music fits the composition.
This is true; the let him off the chain on this track…
We've a term in Turkey: ''Just fart it out and line them one by one'', usually something you'd say to mock something redundant being continiously done by some person or people.
This song is exactly that. Just fucking banal at this point, nothing of it is even slightly exciting, same old DT loop we're expected to be elated about.
Mike 8 months later: “Okay guys maybe it was just a phase or something but I’m in love again”

I am that way too. I find a band love their sound. Listen to them every day, then I burn myself out and get tired of them.
Anything for feedig the algorithm
Never Enough is AWESOME 🤟
Yeah, one of my favorite Octarvarium songs 😅, anyways...
Release images and words 2 and metropolis part 3
Someone described it as "like something made by a random Dream Theater song generator", and I have to agree.
I mean, it's totally understandable, Metallica is my favorite band of all time, and I literally dont care for much of anything they did in the past decade, other than a few things here and there. Being a fan of a band doesnt me you have to love everything they do.
Aww come on you should at least cut your own band some slack
exactly. i hate thank you scientist's latest album. i mean hate is a strong word, but it was way worse than the first 2
I only hate Lulu and dislike ST anger.
Last 2 albums are really good i think.

This is very on the point. My initial reaction to this song was exactly the same: I've heard this before. Thanks for proving me right.
That being said: It's pretty amazing that these guys can whip up something that makes long-time fans feel like they're not even trying anymore, and it's still on a level that very few others can manage.

And then when mum makes something else the kids complain
He didn't prove anything, he just validated your opinion.
DT didn't write this for you. They wrote it for themselves and whoever would like it. Get over it.
Since nobody asked, I'll give my opinion. This is the best DT song since something from a dramatic turn of events. I feel they haven't done anything this good since then. Still, this is a very DT style DT song. I really like it, but I can totally see your point of view. That said, I really hope there is some more interesting and unique stuff on the full record.
Couldn’t agree more. Best output since ADTOE for sure but I’m not hugely impressed by the general typical DT style that’s become repetitive.
Come on man. Breaking all Illusions?
started listening to dt recently, and a dramatic turn of events is indeed absolutely fantastic.
Exactly.
Mangini's drumming was fantastic on that one.
People hat the sounds on it, but I like that it doesn't have that triggered/sampled sounds they used after. This new release has great times and sounds.

All this video did is remind me of how amazing dream theater is, every single song you cut to is an absolute masterpiece.
Well said!
I absolutely hated the last few albums from them, had no interest in listening to them. This song came out and it caught my attention. Started back listening to all thier other mangini stuff. This is a true meld of Magini with the band.
totally agree. This guy just seems kinda jealous
This is, after all, titled "Why I AM bored of dream theater" and not "why Dream Theater is boring now"
@@AlexAnteroLammikko ill ditto a well said, but hitch it on dis horse, for the content of the discourse
totally agree. its a burnout formula. dream theater have been loosing their song orientation, groove, "free space" starting with kevin moore, Derek Sherenian, and of course MP leaving was a huge loss
In other words, they have become the 'Nickelback' of metal
If Dream Theater’s your favorite band, name your three favorite songs off Morningrise! That’s what I thought, poser
How, in the name of all that is Holy, out of their entire discography, you choose I Walk Beside You as their worst work
@@bigman6542 Uhhh I don't know that's not exactly a hot take? A lot of people don't like that song.

17:32 the mode they use would be Dorian #4, the fourth mode of harmonic minor. And yes I'm a self aware fucking nerd
In other words, they have become the 'Nickelback' of metal

@@Adrmeisterwerk That was the first DT record to actually put me to sleep. I tried, I really did.
I guess what I'm saying is:
"I'm all about that cheese, 'bout that cheese 'bout that cheese (no chugging)" ;)
Mangini's kit sounded monstrous. I loved it, and I'm super eager to start learning this song ASAP

"Again I think it's rooted back to Metropolis Pt 1." I can't stop laughing.
Same here, listening multiple times and I kind of ”get it” now ! I like the intensity of the ending, and the solos (except the first one by JP)
_"My favorite part of the songs is actually the brief part with the heavy choir and the palm muted guitars at __9:07__, wish they let that part go on a little longer."_
Yes.
Their vocalist is by far their weakest link ruins any chance of me getting into the band

Can't believe you didn't mention that the riff sounds almost exactly like "Sacrificed Sons" at the 4:40 mark.

The main Riff 17/16 rhythm is taken straight from Mangini's Drum Solo from the 2011/2012 tour, Luna Park DVD being the best example.
Mangini has been a 17/16-l0rd his entire career.

Have come back to this now the album's out. The meat really is outside of the singles, more so than ever for a DT album.
All progressive metal sections like the one mentioned at 2:22 are rooted from the part at 2:21 in the song "Natural Science" by Rush, from 1980
Something I’ve noticed about the singles Dream Theater releases leading up to the full album release - they always pale in comparison to they songs they DON’T release as singles. For example: when they released Untethered Angel, Paralyzed, and Fall Into The Light as singles from the Distance Over Time album, I gave them all multiple listens, and thought “Ok. Pretty cool.”
Then the album got released, and I heard songs like Barstool Warrior, S2N, At Wits End, and Pale Blue Dot, and fell in love with them instantly.
In China we have an old word which means how much you love it before, how much you hate it at the certain point. if DT release new songs, I will listen to it, I will always wait for new surprise, just like you
One of the reasons I've been fascinated with East Asian language.
Spot on. Portnoy is the key.
@@MykeLewisMusic That weird because I was super excited after hearing Alien. Maybe im a simp?
They’ve been kind of on cruise control these past few albums. Although the instrumentation never ceases to amaze, the lack of creativity is what I think makes their more recent songs forgettable.
While it's nothing groundbreaking, it's an amazingly solid (if typical) Dream Theater song. And for a first single I'm with it. Liked this way more than Untethered Angel for sure.
But I will agree, it is indeed safe as far as a Dream Theater composition goes.
it’s not an awful song. it just feels like they’re playing it too safe
Yes
Ina vaccuum without any other dream theater existing, it's a decent song. The song feels like a mix of 4 of their older song with barely anything special :(
Yeah, true, they found a recipe and they apply it every time. This is not bad for them, but for us as listeners, it's becoming boring.
Every single they release before the album is safe

Dream Theater is my favorite band but they have lost their touch without Mike. Now he's back and I'm sure everyone will notice the difference. Now my boys are back 😎🔥 and I'm sure they'll be better than ever 👊🏼
I have to agree. Mangini is amazing and one of my favorite drummers,
but dream theater is Mike Portnoy’s baby just as much as it is John Petrucci and John Myung
Really? I felt like LTE3 had the exact same shortcomings as this song, other than the Rhapsody In Blue cover.

After creating as much music as DT have, it’s gonna be hard to still be “themselves” without sounding a bit repetitive at times.
Guess they should pull a King Gizzard and go microtonal lol
Regardless of the stagnation at times, I love these guys forever.

Yeah either bands change their sound and piss of fans (opeth, leprous) or just continue doing the same thing and also piss off fans.
And McBusted obviously
I’m exciting for the new Leprous.
For me it has been Haken, Every Haken track just makes me excited,
Haken and Leprous both, in my opinion. Now, that said, they are many releases behind DT, and as they age will likely begin to fall into the same problem.
Leprous hasn't been around since the early 90s. Give them a decade.
That being said Mastodon still making damn good music

From everything I've seen and heard, yes they are awesome people. That's one of the reasons I admire them so much.
Well said my dude.
Spot on. And what about those creepier modal interchanges? They're digging into their King Crimson/ELP side of chords. They're telling a story, and they've made a style for themselves while still delivering satisfying songs to headbang in 7/8.
Didn't read it but man what a post!
100% facts. The most honest video about DT I have seen in a while.
The way that I see it if you want to be a true fan of anything. you have to show honesty. And criticism as a whole. Good job mike! 💙
I think the focus issue is cause of the Live After Death flag moving in the background
Why auto focus isn't anyone's friend.
@@reaverofsouls lmao nothing 'auto' has ever been anyone's friend!
If you think Dream Theater's a great band, wait 'till you hear the Doors!
Oh well. Guess they're the alien. tavi.
I love all of the Mangini albums.. and I'm super stoked Portnoy is back! This band is awesome.
That is quite the character arc. Going from being a DT fanboy to becoming a DT hater!!! 😱
"Hater" is bit much tho
You don't have to like every song by a band for you to love the band. Not liking one song by a band doesn't make you a hater.
@@joeturton6627 If the three exclamation marks and emoji didn't give it away, I am fucking around
No arc at all really, all DT fanboys are also DT haters, it's kinda a package deal.
@@EzioMonty117 Fair enough. Its hard to tell if people are being sarcastic or serious anymore.
Hopefully the album delivers. It's not that I like every track of their last album (D/T) but at least it has bangers like Barstool Warrior, S2N, Wit's End, Pale Blue Dot, Viper King heck I even like Out of Reach.
Systematic Chaos was the last album i was truly excited over…. That said, Live? Live is a different matter… these guys kill it live
I was here an month ago BUT... I'd love to know your take on Invisible Monster.
I think it would be cool if Dream Theater did an album of 3 to 4 minute metal songs. Focusing all their talents into a 3 minute song would be epic. What do you guys think?
Train of Thought was boring, so, yeah, a shorter Train of Thought might be less monotonous 🤣
Agreed!
DT is trapped in his octavarium, they have to show us another face of their talent, just my opinion.
In other words, they have become the 'Nickelback' of metal
I value your opinion, but I have to say I enjoy the song quite a bit. That said, you’re right - it’s the classic Dream Theater arrangement and it’s somewhat predictable.
How, though, do you want them to differ? If you and me liked it the first 100 times then why would DT expect their fans not to like the 101st?
As for your critique over their repeated use of the i - II (Neapolitan-esque chord) it’s a progression they use well, as do many neo-classical metal bands (which is a whole lot of metal). Although I will admit that I would like to hear DT try new ideas more as well.
Probably just me, but I really loved the Mirror Album, Lie is my all time favorite song. And sounds super heavy and different from modern DT
The album is Awake 👍👍 scarred is my favorite song from it
@@jamescross9692 yeah I realized that after listening to the song after I made the comment and forgot to edit lol.
22:17 - "But I don't call that Prog myself."
Same here - I call it "Plateau Metal".
