Can't grasp the fact that "Bú Zhī Dào" was simplified to "Bu'r Dao" up to just only "Bu Rao" in Běijīng accent 😭 that explains why I can't almost catch up to what some actors say in mainland CDramas lol. they shorten a lot of words to the extremes
Me too... We learn perfect standard language (which is good), struggle when trying to understand people later XD Kudos to our teacher Grace to making it easier for us!
My favourite Mandarin resource! Back in the 2010s, I studied a little Mandarin here in the UK, and later did some epic journeys all over China - loved it! Been all around Taiwan twice, also very nice country. I discovered one unusual thing speaking Mandarin in China; when I tried to say each word slowly and clearly, and tried to get the tones correct, people didn't seem to understand me. But when I said a sentence fast, without worrying too much about perfect pronunciation, people understood me much better. Of course tones are very important, but the FLOW of a sentence is also important. And when I hear your friend from Northern China speaking, that is exactly what I hear! He almost blurs each word into the next word, it is so fast! The Malaysian lady speaks a bit slower, but the person from Taiwan also speaks quite fast.
Hearing Mandarin speakers from different places really highlights the richness and diversity of Chinese spoken around the world. The differences in Pei Ern's Malaysian tones and word choice are very interesting, and I guess some of the extra words are due to the English influence in Malaysia? Dongliang's Northern accent is among the more understandable examples compared to some other examples I've heard. Chungwei highlights the diversity among Taiwanese accents, as my impression is that his Taiwanese accent is stronger than Grace's Taiwanese accent, which, even in non-teacher, daily life mode, I feel is pretty neutral, with clear enunciation.
Well, personally me though, but Taiwanese is easier for me to understand. It sounds pretty lazily, just the way I talk in real life (I'm Russian, and our language is quite lazy as well), so I kinda am able to make out what the person says
since I'm working with Taiwan company in Malaysia, I'm willing to learn Taiwanese Mandarin even I'm not a chinese speaker. 如果您來吉隆坡,請告訴我。很高興在這裡見到您並向您問好。😊
I’ve been living in Taiwan for 14 years now and I’m only about an A2 level in Chinese, although I can read and write about 1800 traditional characters. The problem is most teachers have a different accent then they have in Taiwan so the hardest part for me is listening and understanding. My wife is Taiwanese, who speaks English, but if she heard someone speaking with a Scottish accent she can’t understand it, much like me trying to understand a different Chinese accent.
@@GraceMandarinChinese Thanks, now I've paid money it makes a big difference as I don't want to waste my investment, though it is a life time membership which helps.
😂 resources from this app/page are all over the internet lol for example channel like Learn Chinese with TV series or chinesepod, yt channels and much more
Besides accents... Words are different like 說vs講. Even with English "ok" embedded. In your next video perhaps you can compare some wording difference in different parts of world where mandarin is spoken such as 機車vs摩托
😃GRACE !!❤You never let the pepole down, I think the northern & Taiwanese was the easiest to pick up on but the Malaysian accent is a whole different dimension of understanding 😂 but I wouldn't mind learning more about that dimension lol I look forward to you blessing us with another lesson like this😀 #GraceisPresident #GuoHouse👈 #Accents #Getouttaheroffice🤨 #UnitedStatesofGrace🇹🇼 ❤❤
I could best understand you when you read slowly 😂 For the rest, they made my spirit sink a little 😭 For me the easiest (out of three hard) is probably Northern then Taiwanese they Malaysian. Great video overall, thanks to all participants.
I get that it can be a bit frustrating, but it's awesome to see you're giving it a shot! I've been there too when learning to understand native English speakers.🥲 Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Thanks Grace and Grace’s friends. Happy New Year. I’m actually not sure which accent is hardest or easiest. I feel like what made the Malaysian examples difficult was the unique word choices, but regarding pronunciation alone it might have been the easiest...I don’t know haha maybe it’s just me. Nonetheless, it was fun hearing all the differences!
One time I told my Taiwanese friend 我去打油,not realizing the proper way is 我去加油. Then I asked my Malaysian friend why do we say 打油, the answer I got was hilarious. Same with 按錢, Malaysian will say 我去銀行按錢, just ask pei ern what that means for a good laugh. I try to learn Taiwanese mandarin, but because I grew up with Malaysian Mandarin, it gives a nostalgic feeling when I hear it, even though it has improper grammar, words, etc
This makes it impossible for me to learn Chinese:" , no matter how good i am at it , or how many words i learned , there is always new and different accents i still didn't learn , and even if i learned every word in Chinese dictionary or vocabulary, i still might not understand anything that is said or spoken from someone who got different accent , Chinese language is like a language for a whole continent, you only can learn specific and limited district's language, but you can never say that you mastered " the whole Chinese "

No offense, I love dialects and accents so much, but as a foreigner, when you've been learning standard 普通话 the whole time, these sound like they are absolutely butchering the language, lol. It's fascinating!

I like your analysis Peter! I feel that some of the extra words in Malaysia might also originate from Chinese dialects, but I'm not sure.
@@GraceMandarinChinese Some expressions are similar to Cantonese or Min languages like 幾時 or 講.
Living in Malaysia it was so cute to see how we combine different languages building in English words, Cantonese, Malay even tamil
I need more videos like this!
Absolutely love these! The contrast with the some dialogue is so useful for my trainingy ear! Thanks for making them!
I’m glad you enjoyed this video Mike! Thank you for your support ✨

Taiwanese or Beijing is definitely easier!
Malaysian somehow, sounded easier

This last guy gotta be joking with me! Geez

taiwan people speak zh as z, ch as c, and sh as s.
how do they differ from the normal s z and c?

馬來西亞的口音好可愛哈哈
Awesome video!!!
Even though the dialect is less standard, I like that malaysians use liao3 more often for 了. It gives a very classical vibe imo
BRILLIANT lesson again Grace thankyou SO much!
How to NEmainland accent: pretend you're a pirate and just skip every other syllable.

What is the meaning of "THANG" in your mandarin 🤔🤔🤔🤔

請問,是不是星期‘‘xing1qi1’’? :)
In PRC it's xing1-qi1, in Taiwan it's xing1-qi2
the malaysian accent is soooo cute ❤
