- Telstar was a #1 pop hit in 1962 in the USA and the UK. A perfect tune for the Space Age! The band was The Tornados. I'm playing a 1978 Emmons pedal steel guitar, E9 tuning. My site: www.playsteelguitar.com
Fabulous ! Being a musician of fifty years I remember this as a young boy. Love it !
Thanks! I too remember hearing it on the radio back in the early 60s. It's part of the soundtrack of our youth! 😎
Telstar by the Tornados...1963. Sounds nice on steel...!!
@@stevenredman1582 😎😎👍
Beautiful performance, Doug. Thanks, Graham
@@hoola100 Thanks! Glad you like it 😊
This song came out in 1962. JFK was president and the future looked bright and promising. My deceased sister was born in January of 1962.
I was born that same month and year. Im so sorry your Sis is gone. I lost a brother , the first last year. Music makes these sorrows lesser somehow. All the best .
You are going to find that JFK had a double. He was at a Trump Rally. So was JFK Jr. He is now VP for Trump.

what
This tune brings me back to a childhood when I thought the future would be bright not the hell we live in today
As usual, Doug, a flawless performance. You give us aspiring steel guitar players something to shoot for. Thanks.
Thanks! Much appreciated 😊
Absolutely sir I agree 🇬🇧🙏🤝
I said, I already know I'll love this, as I clicked on the notification. YES, such a timeless tune. Thank you.
Glad you like it! 😎
What's not to love about a pedal steel 😁👍
I met my husband in 1962. We are still together. All this music brings back memories. ❤🇬🇧
Thank you, God, for allowing me to be alive when all this great music ruled the airwaves. And thank YOU, Doug, for bringing back these golden memories to this old man.
Thanks Dean! Much appreciated. 😎👍
Oh my dear Doug, thank you so much for bringing back my memories and all these forgotten emotions from my earliest childhood. I really started to cry even as an old man now...
Thank you and love from Germany!
Thank you so much for you heartfelt comment! I’m glad the song brings back fond memories for you. 🙂🙂
When this was played at the ice rink during public skating people just started skating faster without realizing it.😂
😊😊👍
Man, that takes me back! Thanks! Excellent, as always!
Glad you like it! 😎
Telstar is one of the greatest records ever made
I agree! 😎
Truly so.
your videos mean a lot. Thank you for them, so much!!
Thanks, much appreciated! 🤗
Excellent ,one of my favorite tunes Bell Labs sent up Telstar July 10,1962 first telecommunications satellite
Thanks for listening! 😎
An absolutely pitch perfect, knockout rendition, that EASILY compares to the Tornadoes original.
SUPERB, and really brightened up my day.
Thanks for this great share,
Well done!
Glad you like it! Thanks for listening. 😎
A lovely version of the song. I first heard Telstar when it was covered by The Shadows. I did some search and found the original version. I know each are good in their own right but listening to the pure tones of the steel guitar, closing my eyes I can just feel it going through me. I therefore prefer this cover of the song, even more so than the original. Nice work Doug :)
Wow! Thanks Dodge. Much appreciated. I remember hearing the original with the organ playing the melody... way back when I was 12 years old! I didn't like it much back then, but when I heard guitar versions was sold! Always thought it would sound good on steel guitar. Cheers 🤗
I concur 😊
If Telstar had been launched from Nashville instead of Cape Canaveral, the song named after the satellite would have sounded like this....
😊😊 I like that!
I was 14, and this was the coolest song!
Yes. The golden age of instrumental rock hits heard every day on the radio. Miss those days.
Loved it! Specially the slide up when you modulated very very nice ... love the surf tunes.. hey what’s next? Miserlu heh heh
Thanks! Yeah, that modulation is in the original recording. It was played on an organ. I think it's well suited for guitar too.
That was awesome ! Telstar has always been one of my favorite tunes, even though it came out when I was 5 years old !
Mine too! Thanks for watching. 😎
Mornin Doug very refreshing to listen to this one love your take on it. thanks for sharing
Thanks! I’m glad you like it. 😎
I can sit and listen to your magic for hours on end!
I appreciate that! 😊👍
oh wow!!! What memories this song brings back. There's nothing like the steel guitar, especially played by a master. Thank you, Doug.
I’m glad the song brings back fond memories for you. Thanks for watching the video! 😎
Truly inspiring! The sound of this guitar and your playing brings a tear to my eye!!
Thanks Ron, so glad you like it. 😁
Thank you so much !!!! Beautiful and really took me back.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😁
I loved the music of the tornados.this is a time I play on my organ or guitar ( but not as nice as this.)I bought myself a lopsteel a few months ago and am still getting to grips with it .
Enjoy! 😊
You are an incredible musician and a wonderful entertainer. Thanks for the music!
Wow, thank you! 😊
This was the first record I ever bought myself. I was 11 years old. I loved this song by The Tornadoes.
😊😊👍👍
Wow does that bring back memories. Always thought it was a cool song. Excellent job Doug. Thanks
Thanks for listening, Larry! 👍
Hi Doug I listen to your music every day . Again thanks you have a great talent . I sometimes wish I could play a musical instrument . but I can only listen and admire your skills . Steve Williams . Have a great day mate .
Thanks Steve 😊
Thanks Doug, superb as usual. I was 12 years old when this came out brings back so many happy music memories and there was so much more to come.
Thanks! I too was 12 years old in 1962! I remember hearing this tune blasting out of my little transistor radio! It was played on organ originally.
I've worn the hell out of a mouse and my fingers are sore from hitting Replay. Just sayin'!
Awesome! Thanks for listening 😎🚀🚀🚀
Just had a laughing fit. I was 11 and had my first record player. Telstar was the only record which I played to all the family at 4am on Christmas’s morning. Still love it today.
That's great! Glad you like the song. 😁
Very very nice, beautiful sound and great picking! Thanks Doug
Many thanks! Glad you like it. 😎
Dang, that was absolutely amazing. I absolutely love how you play the steel guitar. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! Much appreciated. 😎
And if this song couldn’t be anymore beautiful… I’m beyond pleased that you posted this. One of the greatest songs in our footprint on this planet
So glad you like it! 😁
The one thing im afraid of our young ones wont ever hear this music and its so sad, go on for ever.
👍👍
Wow. Thanks for bringing my teenage years back Doug. Seems like only yesterday when I was 15. Can't imagine life without the Real Music of our Youth. Thanks and beautiful sound.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😎
The unofficial song for the new " US.Space Force"
😊👍
FAN-TASTIC ... WOW ... that sent me on a walk down memory lane 👍👍😎 First time I heard " Telstar"
was in the early 60's ... probably 1963 or 64 ... I was born in 1956 ... so I was 7 or 8 years old. My sister ( God rest her soul ... she passed away in 96 from complications of MS ) she was 10 years older than me and she played the 45rpm record of " Telstar " quite often ( among others, she was a Music lover too like me, guess that who I got it from. She even played the Clarinet in the High School orchestra and Band) . This was a
" FANTASTIC " rendition of " Telstar" ... I play guitar myself but haven't try playing a Steel guitar or Pedal Steel... but the Country Dance band I played in ... back in the Mid & late 70" and early 80's had a Pedal Steel player ( he was much older than me) ... anyways... I enjoyed this rendition of " Telstar " ... thanks for sharing! 👍👍😎
Thanks Warren! I'm glad the song brings back fond memories for you. 😊🎅
Fabulous, Joe Meek is probably looking down on you with love.
Thanks! Much appreciated 😎
Perfection! This is the only rendition I've ever heard that I like as well as the original by the Tornados!
Wow, thank you! 😎👍
Simply beautiful...... Brings back so many pleasant memories
Thanks for listening!
This has always been one of my favorites, going way back when I first heard it back in the 60's. Takes me back to a simpler time.
One of my favs too. Thanks for checking it out! 😊
Ausgezeichnet
Ich freue mich, dass es Ihnen gefällt! 😎
One of fave instrumentals from the 60's, sounds great with a bit of country twang!
Glad you like it! 😊

Many thanks!
At almost 80 years old having played guitar since 10 years old, I say close enough LOL thank you for posting...
Thanks for listening! 😊
WONDERFUL...........Thank you so much...gave me goosebumps...
Glad you enjoyed it! 😎
Thank you! I remember this as a song that was inspiring is so many ways and needed to lighten up our current mood. BEAUTIFUL!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for listening 😎
Oh what memories especially for those who were in those magical years as teenagers, jukeboxes, girls, real songs where every song was different and unique, singers who could sing and the words were clear, and there was Telstar, first the Satellite and then the song. These times will never come again. Well played Doug, just as I remember it, Thank you.
Wow, thank you. Yes, I remember those days well. These songs were the soundtrack of my youth and I learned to play guitar on these songs.
How right you are.
Very talented!
Thanks! 😎
Thank you for uploading this. Takes me back to better times.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
i was with the shadows.....in the 60s we played this a million times...this would have been a wonderful addition to any version of this great tune
Thanks Ed, much appreciated! 😊👍
I lived on an island in the Caribbean south east of PR. Went through the Cuban crisis there Very scary, surrounded by Russian ships. Great tune. We were isolated. No tv or radio most of the time. Black outs every night. Learned so much of how to survive with very little. It was heaven!
Bravo. Somehow this song speaks to me of a different time, a time when science would prevail and lead us to a better life. Alas, a bit of a naïve notion. Perhaps, the innocence of youth. Still, the song evokes those emotions. I hope you don't mind, I recorded a copy for my own use only. The act of recording, digitally on my computer, is so far advanced from the recording tools I would have had when I first encountered this song. I have to reflect that, yes, science has "marched ahead". The changes roll on, some good, some not so much, but the changes do roll on.
Yes, this tune brings back memories of the early 60s... the space age, JFK, Camelot, hot rods, surf guitar music on AM radio, and good times.
I remember this song. Made famous by the Tornados. Always loved it as a kid.
Thanks for checking it out.
Great Doug, I remember it well when it was released by The Tornadoes, Billy Fury’s backing group.
Keith.
Thanks for checking it out, Keith! 😎
Love Billy Fury......
Doug Beaumier . When the satellite Telstar was orbiting the Earth, I was in a van with my band mates travelling from the North East of England to London for an audition in Shaftesbury Avenue (Our version of Tin Pan Alley). We didn’t get the gig because the drummer was the only player who could read the dots!!!
Memories.
Superb Doug!! Touch, Tone and Taste is awesome.
Thanks! Much appreciated 😊
This is the BEST version I've ever heard
Thanks! 😊
Fantastic
Thank you!! I haven't known I've been wanting to hear this! I unpacked my Gibson SG on rhythm and I was cruising along with you! Haven't dug it out in a year...
Rock on! 😎
When I was a kid, I had to regularly see a specialist in Montréal. We lived about 50 miles from the City, so my dad would plan his wholesale buying trips around my appointments so he could drive me.
Three songs were major hits at the time, so they always played on the radio at least once during our drives. To this day they always remind me of our drives together - among the few times it was just the two of us. (I lost him to a car accident the following year, so they remain pretty important memories 60 years later.)
The songs were Andy Williams' "Can't get used to Losing You", Little Peggy March's "I will Follow Him", and the last was The Tornadoes' "Telstar"
Thanks Doug. Great rendition.
Wow, I’m so glad the song brings back fond memories for you.
Perfect Doug. Thnx buddy!
😎😎👍👍
amazing, thanks for sharing!!!!!
Glad you like it! 😎
Great job! So what is playing the backup instruments? And how is it Programmed for Chords etc...?
A difficult tune on the keyboard as I am finding out!! Plenty of Chord changes, that's for sure!
Thanks! I made the backing track using band-in-a-box for bass, drums, and keyboard. I added (I played) three guitar tracks to that.
Excellent, many hours of practice to achieve the level of mastery you display. Enjoyed it very much.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, nearly 50 years of playing 😎
What was even more “extra-terrestrial” about this song for me was hearing it fade in and out at night on my little AM transistor radio picking up skip stations after end-of-day AM signoff!
This instrument is highly under utilized!
I agree! 😎
Very cleanly played, Doug. It harkens back to a time when a satellite (ANY satellite) in space was a big deal. Things in space are still a big deal... but that's because most of it is "space junk". Humans always have to ruin everything... This is why we can't have nice things. 😅🤣😂
Glad you liked it!
This song was so far ahead of its time, it's ridiculous.
I agree! 👍
We didn't have a clue, but we sure Love It!
We where both 12 years ago when that came out...... Time sure flies 🙂
love this sound doug keep playing
Thanks! 😎
Superb rendition... many thanx ;)
Thank you too! 😊
Great job, Joe Meek would give it 2 thumbs up
Thanks! Much appreciated 😎🚀🚀🚀
Too bad about Joe Meek. Damn lawyers!
Yeah, in the end the court determined that Meek did not plagiarize Telstar, but he died before that determination was made.
Another Great rendition of a song from my youth. You NAILED this. Keep up all of your wonderful recording of older great music.
Thank You for all of the GREAT music.
Thanks for listening 😎
I just shared this video with my dad, and it turns out he’s taken guitar lessons from you! Hahaha, small world
Wow, what a coincidence! Thanks for checking out the video. 😎
Happy to subscribe! Excellent playing on a very cool old hit
Just awesome!!! First 45 RPM record I ever bought as a kid. Thanks!
Very cool! Thanks for listening 😁

Thanks! Glad you like it. I too had one of those little transistor radios when I was a kid. I was 12 years old when this song came out. 😎
Hello Doug, This brought back memories of when I used to hear this song played on the Billboard Top 100 survey. It was great to hear this song again. It's a great song and I thank you for your excellent performance! Stay well! WIll Ortiz
Hi Will, Thanks for checking in! I'm glad the song brings back memories for you. 🤗
Beautifully played. One of my all time favourites.
Many thanks! 😊
@@dougsteel. I started secondary school in 1961 in England and the teachers there were horrible bullies and my only way of getting through four years of hell was pop music and this was one of the all time greats that helped me. Thank you again for posting it.
I love the song, but in some ways, it feels somber.
Makes me think of a more upbeat version of Pat Metheny's Group Last Train Home
More and more, as I discover your work, I appreciate the trips which you provide back to happy memories. . .
Glad to hear that! Thanks for watching 😊
I also remember this from 1963. What a fabulous version there-off.
Thanks for listening! Glad you like it. 😊
Still a great tune - wonderfully played Sir!

you have a new fan from Hungary Doug, best wishes! 👍
Thanks and welcome! 😎
Beautiful song, beautiful execution thanks from Italy for posting it.
Thanks for listening! Glad you like it. 😊
Nice
Thanks for checking it out! 😎
Great Telstar Doug! I'm writing this for an older friend of mine. He mentioned that He's pretty fond of the Tornados' 1962 hit Telstar, Joe Meek's composition with Heinz on electric lead guitar
wasnt heinz on bass ? and isnt it ritchie blackmore on electric guitar
😎😊👍
@@mikebourque2507 Ritchie Blackmore never played with Tornados, he played with Meek's other houseband, The Outlaws. The lead instrument is the Clavioline, added after the band had recorded their bit, and that was played by Geoff Goddard, and shamefully he was not credited.
Really enjoyed that. 💜💜💜💜
Thanks! Glad you like it. 🤗
Excellent; glory to GOD Almighty!!!!!!
I always waiting for your fabulous performance like this.
Thanks! Much appreciated 😎
